KINETIC ANALYSIS OF AGILITY LADDERS DRILLS AND THEIR COMPARISON TO SPORT-SPECIFIC MOVEMENTS SUCH AS SHUFFLING AND SPRINTING
This study assessed agility ladder drills for the purpose of comparing kinetic characteristics of these drills to one another, and to sprinting and shuffling. Subjects (N=30) performed six agility ladder drills as well as sprinted and shuffled to the left and right over two large force platforms. A repeated measure ANOVA was used to assess horizontal and vertical ground reaction force (GRF) and the ratio of horizontal to vertical GRF, averaged from three steps for each drill. Significant main effects were found for all variables (p ≤ 0.001). Post-hoc analysis identified differences (p ≤ 0.05) between the agility drills as well as between the agility drills and the sprinting and shuffling. Results can be used to guide the progression of agility ladder drills based on known intensity and allow practitioners to prioritize drills that are most similar to sport-specific movements such as sprinting and shuffling
MEASURING INSTANTANEOUS VELOCITY IN FOUR SWIM STROKES USING AN AUTOMATIC HEAD TRACKING SYSTEM: A COMPARISON STUDY
This study compared instantaneous swimming velocity from an automated video-based system to a tethered speedometer. Twenty-two state- and national-level swimmers (7 M, 15 F; 14.5 ± 2.5 yrs) swam 25 m of each stroke at maximal intensity. Bland-Altman plots showed good agreement between systems for backstroke and freestyle but poorer agreement for butterfly and breaststroke. The RMS error was also lower in backstroke and freestyle compared to butterfly and breaststroke. The differences in systems may be explained by the different body segments tracked by each system (head vs hips) and with differences being more apparent during butterfly and breaststroke due to the wave-like motion of these strokes. While the automated video-based system is suitable for measuring instantaneous swimming velocity, coaches, sports scientists, and swimmers should be aware of larger discrepancies between systems when assessing butterfly and breaststroke

Focusing less on ruin and more on hope despite systemic oppression and abusers who routinely attack, undermine, and underestimate women, the LGBTQ+ community, and people with disabilities, this collection of poems embraces erotic power—signaling a desire not just to survive but to be alive—exploring identity fragmentation “post”-trauma; writing as activism, spiritually restorative, and an act of self-love; and the power of individuals to resist cruelty, supporting one another inside the current capitalist heteronormative patriarchy. CHROMOSOMAL SIGNATURES OF AGING, SIBLING STATUS, AND POLLUTANTS: AN EXPLORATION OF COMMON LOON TELOMERE DYNAMICS
Telomeres are non-coding segments of linear DNA located at the tips of each chromosome. They act as a buffer from the permanent loss of nucleotides that occurs naturally during mitosis, protecting critical coding portions of DNA from irreparable damage. Telomeres degrade faster in developing individuals experiencing rapid mitosis and damage is made worse from oxidative stress, especially early in life. Therefore, telomere length measurements can be a good indicator of life expectancy at the population levels. In some species, telomere lengths are better indicators of longevity than age bringing telomere analysis to the forefront of life expectancy research. For this study, telomeres were measured from the DNA extracted from nucleated red blood cells collected during a long-term study of common loons (Gavia immer). Common loons are piscivorous waterbirds, living sometimes longer than 30 years, and they produce one to two chicks each year after they reach six years of age. The purpose of this study was to explore environmental factors that could cause rapid rates of telomere loss. Telomeres were quantified using qPCR amplification profiles of the telomeres compared with the ultra-conserved elements within the genome used as the single copy genes to calculate T/S ratios. Results showed that telomere lengths were significantly shorter with age; smaller same brood siblings showed a telomere length change with size, as individuals got smaller their telomeres were shorter; and there was no indication that methylmercury influenced blood telomeres negatively
GENDER DIFFERENCES IN TIBIAL ACCELERATION IN PRE-SEASON YOUTH SOCCER PLAYERS
In soccer, the players need to be able to change direction quickly, meaning the players need the ability to rapidly accelerate and decelerate. Females at a young age have a higher risk of sustaining injuries that can be caused by rapidly accelerating compared to males. The purpose was to investigate the gender differences in acceleration in youth soccer players. 30 youth soccer players engaged in the following drills: a jog, the M drill, 5-10-5 drill, and a single leg triple jump. This data was collected using inertial measurement units. The peak accelerations in the M drill on the left side was the only statistically significant drill (p=0.006, females: 590.9 ± 275.9 m/s2, males: 882.1 ± 263.4 m/s2). There is support to add load management strategies to current training programs and that individualized programs may be the most effective
COORDINATION AND COORDINATION VARIABILITY IN TRAIL RUNNING
Trail running is an emerging endurance discipline. Unveiling differences in motor adaptation between more (MP) and less (LP) proficient athletes represents the first step to I) standardize injury prevention protocols and II) optimize training. The aim of this work was to compare MP and LP trail runners for coordination and coordination variability (CV). Twenty athletes carried out a field test wearing a full body motion capture system. Coordination and CV were assessed for three couplings: I) knee-ankle, II) hip-knee and III) trunk-hip. No differences were found in coordination, but MP runners showed higher hip-knee and trunk-hip CV in downhill sections, as well as higher hip-knee CV in uphill sections. Results indicate superior motor adaptability for MP runners in an unpredictable environment. Future studies may assess whether specific techniques (balance and perturbation training) positively impact CV trail running population
THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT SHOE MODELS AND THE TRIAL NUMBER ON SPRINTING PERFORMANCE IN SOCCER SHOE TESTING. A PILOT STUDY.
Testing and improving soccer shoe models is important because of the physical demands of the sport. However, sprint-specific activities can also influence sprint performance. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of different soccer shoe models and the trial number on sprinting and agility performance. Twenty-five soccer players completed four straight-line 30m sprints followed by four change-of-direction (COD) sprints and after each sprint the shoe model was quasi-randomized changed. For straight-line sprinting, horizontal force-velocity-profiling parameters and sprint times were computed and, in the COD,-test, sprint time was measured. The results indicate that the trial number affects the ability to generate horizontal force more at higher sprinting velocities than at low sprinting velocities, resulting in nonsystematic variance in the shoe model analysis
DOES A SINGLE PITCHING SESSION INDUCE LOWER EXTREMITY MUSCULAR FATIGUE IN HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PITCHERS?
The purpose of this study was to assess hip strength changes and provide a quantifiable measurement to show muscular fatigue after pitching a single pitching session. Fifteen adolescent male baseball pitcher‘s hip external rotator, internal rotator, and extensor strength, along with a functional test were measured before and after a single pitching session. After an average of 19 pitches, all hip strength measures in both legs significantly decreased in post-pitching tests. This study showed pitching increased muscular fatigue of the hip muscles after a small number of pitches thrown. With overall fatigue being a large indicator of injury risk in baseball pitchers, monitoring lower extremity muscular fatigue may be a way to potentially reduce risk of injury
ANALYZING SELF-ASSESSMENT OF PUNCHING INTENSITY BETWEEN EXPERIENCED AND INEXPERIENCED BOXING ATHELETES
Due to the direct confrontation with a training or sparring partner, boxing and other martial arts represent a unique situation and the importance of accurate self-assessment, in which an incorrect self-assessment can lead to severe injuries for the participant himself or the sparring partner. The study aimed to investigate the self-assessment accuracy and repeatability between 26 experienced and inexperienced athletes for pre-defined punching intensities using a developed boxing monitoring sensor system. The results show considerable overestimated self-assessed punching intensities in the inexperienced in contrast to the experienced group revealing a substantial deficiency of punching intensity self-assessment
