    RUNNING TO THE BEAT: DOES LISTENING TO MUSIC AFFECT RUNNING CADENCE AND LOWER EXTREMITY BIOMECHANICS?

    This aimed to determine if music with specific target beats per minute (bpm) could be used for treadmill running cadence training to alter lower extremity biomechanics and, thus, reduce injury risk. Motion analysis and a synchronized triaxial accelerometer collected data from eighteen runners during treadmill running. Participants ran at a self-selected speed (SS) to determine their baseline cadence. They also ran to music where the bpm of the songs was increased by 5% and 10% over SS cadence. Post hoc tests showed significant differences in heart rate from SS. There were no significant differences between cadence or peak acceleration. In the current study, music was not shown to be a viable method for cadence training in runners. Our findings led to methodology recommendations for future work in using music to effectively improve running cadence

    Effects of Eccentric Nordic Hamstring Exercise on Fascicle Length in Females

    The eccentric Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) may be useful for increasing fascicle length (FL) of the bicep femoris long head and reduce the risk of hamstring strain injury. Compared to changes in hamstring strength, FL has been shown to reduce the risk of injury to a greater extent. While previous studies have investigated the eccentric NHE on FL, many lack control groups, female participants, and have not measured performance outcomes. Our aim was to examine the effect of 6-weeks of NHE on FL and measures of performance in females. Seven recreationally active females (age: 22.43 ± 2.99 years; BMI: 20.8 ± 4.14 kg/m2 ), were allocated into either a concentric only (control, n = 2) or eccentric only (n = 5) NHE group and completed 6-weeks of twice weekly NHE training. Outcome measures were assessed at baseline and post-intervention and included: bicep femoris FL and pennation angle (measured via 2D ultrasound), lower body isokinetic strength, and countermovement jump height. Independent samples Mann-Whitney U test were used to assess whether the change in the outcome variables pre-to-post intervention were different between the groups. Although not statistically significant (p\u3e0.05), the eccentric group demonstrated increases in FL (median = 1.24cm) and decrease in pennation angle (median = -0.73°) compared to females in the control concentric group who showed a decrease in FL (median = -0.61cm) and increase in pennation angle (median = 1.38°). Additionally, there were non-statistically significant changes in isokinetic strength and countermovement jump for both groups pre-to-post intervention. Our findings suggest the eccentric NHE may be effective for increasing FL in females

    VELOCITY BASED STRENGTH TRAINING: VALIDITY OF THE APPLE WATCH 7 TO MEASURE MOVEMENT VELOCITY IN THE BACK SQUAT

    Velocity-Based resistance Training (VBT) measurement methods based on commercially-available electronics in smartphones and other wearables are not yet accessible to the broad public. Building on this gap, the motivation for this study was to assess the validity of the Apple Watch 7 for broad application to VBT. In particular, the velocity predictions of a barbell mounted Apple Watch 7 were compared against data from 3D optical motion capture (Vicon) as gold standard in 22 subjects for the free weight back squat. The subjects reported to the lab for one testing session and performed the free weight back squat at intensities between 45 and 100 percent of their one-repetition-maximum. A total of 574 repetitions (total), 285 repetitions (slow), 289 repetitions (fast) were successfully recorded, with only 30 repetitions missing because of connection issues between the Apple Watch and the server infrastructure. The peak and mean velocity predictions of the concentric movement phase were with a high precision compared to Vicon (Vmean: SEE=0.049m/s, r=0.976, Vpeak: 0.092m/s, r=0.959), with the error being similar or smaller compared to other validation studies. The insight gained in this work plays a crucial part toward advancing VBT monitoring technologies for broader use by demonstrating the validity of commercially-available and highly popular consumer electronics

    ACUTE EFFECTS OF SHOE CONDITIONS ON FOOT STRIKE PATTERN OF RUNNERS WITH DIFFERENT HABITUAL PATTERNS

    Multiple influential studies argued that minimal footwear promotes forefoot running whereas cushioned footwear promotes rear foot strike. We readdressed effects of footwear on the foot strike pattern considering runners’ habitual patterns. Based on the observed foot strike angle, we divided 9 participants into rearfoot, midfoot and forefoot runners. All participants then ran wearing 3 different shoes: performance-boosting shoes, conventional shoes, and minimal shoes. We found a significant effect of shoes on foot strike angle and the interaction between the group and shoes. Contrary to previous studies\u27 well-accepted arguments, performance-boosting shoes with thick outsoles induced the rearfoot group to run with decreased foot strike angle more effectively than minimal shoes.     A NOVEL STUDY EXAMINING COGNITIVE-MOTOR INTERFERENCE AFTER ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT RECONSTRUCTION

    The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of examining cognitive motor interference (CMi) in athletes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and return to sport through electroencephalography (EEG) and three-dimensional motion capture recordings. A 128-electrode EEG system is used to track brain wave patterns for specific biomarkers of CMi during sitting and balance tasks. An 8-camera Optitrack system is used to obtain three-dimensional kinematics during anticipated and unanticipated drop vertical jumps. Preliminary EEG N200 amplitudes (ACL: -4.99 ± 2.39; Control: -7.75 ± 5.83) and peak knee flexion (ACL: 93.29 ± 12.92°; Control: 92.87 ± 7.17°) during dual-task and unanticipated landings, respectively, demonstrate the feasibility of this study. Future work will continue to assess the effect of CMi on risk factors for secondary ACL injury

    The purpose of this study was to present a new method of dividing the phases of weightlifting exercises and describe the accompanying barbell biomechanics. Ten competitive female weightlifters performed 4 sets at intensities ranging from 85 to 100% of their previous one repetition maximum (1RM) in snatch and clean. A motion capture system was used to record 3-D barbell trajectories for all attempts. Barbell kinematic and kinetic data were compared between the pull, turnover, and catch phases of the snatch and clean.     I In elite team sports technical skills and explosiveness are essential to get the optimum performance, being the vertical jump one of the most important motor skills in competition, usually assessed by countermovement jump (CMJ). The main aim of our study is to determine the correlation between jump height and kinetic and kinematic variables using force platforms, and secondly to describe CMJ values of elite Chilean team sports athletes. The results obtained in our study showed a positive correlation between jump height and concentric mean power, concentric peak velocity, concentric peak power and total concentric impulse. These results are fundamental for an optimal analysis of athletes jumping tests, based on data from the specific study population and the use of those variables that are most related to their performance

    FLIPPED CLASSROOM FOR UNDERGRADUATE INTRODUCTORY BIOMECHANICS CLASS

    The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the effectiveness of flipped classroom teaching approach in an undergraduate introductory biomechanics class. A total of 28 students were recruited for the study. Students were required to watch short videos, study reading assigned, and complete pre-work assignments before each class. During class time, students were mainly engaged with problem-based learning. The biomechanics concept inventory (BCI) version 3 was used to determine learning improvement. The pre-, post-test, and survey were administered during the first and last two weeks of the semester. Students demonstrated significant learning improvement (d = 1.23, P \u3c 0.05) with a 23% normalised learning gain. Most students (64%) indicated that the flipped classroom approach works well for their learning because it provides flexibility that they may review the course lesson anytime on their own
