    CHANGES OF KINEMATICS DURING UNDERWATER UNDULATORY SWIMMING WITH INCREASING SWIMMING VELOCITY

    The purpose of this study was to clarify about the changes of the kinematics during underwater undulatory swimming (UUS) with increasing the swimming velocity. Eight male collegiate swimmers performed three UUS trials at the 70%, 80% and 90% velocity of their maximum effort swimming velocity in a water flume. For motion analysis, a motion capture system was used to collect the three-dimensional coordinates. Using the collected coordinates, the kinematic parameters were analyzed in each trial. As the main results, the kick frequnecy increased and the relative duration of the un-propusive phase with hip extension and knee felxion decreased with increasing swimming velocity. Furtheremore, since the peak hip external roation velocity increased with increasing swimming velocity, it was considered that the hip external rotation velocity during the downward kicking related to controll the swimming velocity during underwater undulatory swimming

    CHANGES IN LUMBAR JOINT MOMENTS USING A FEMALE SPECIFIC TORSO MODEL DURING RUNNING

    The purpose of this study was to quantify the peak lumbar joint flexor / extensor moments following changes in torso and breast mass during running using an innovative computer musculoskeletal model. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected for a female participant running at 2.6 m/s. An MRI scan of the breasts was used to calculate breast mass and centre of mass location relative to the torso. An OpenSim whole body model was customised with two point-mass segments added to the torso to represent the breasts. Key findings have shown that changes in breast mass can cause peak lumbar flexor / extensors moments to be over or underestimated by up to ~18%. These results suggest that including the mass of the breasts in female specific models, during dynamic activities such as running, is an important aspect that must be considered for future work

    EXAMINATION OF EVALUATION INDEX OF TENNIS RACKET SELECTION WITH STROKE MOTION ANALYSIS

    The purpose of this paper is to build a selection index for tennis rackets. Tennis rackets were evaluated using motion indices derived by investigating the effects of rackets on stroke movement. The subjects of this study were three male senior tennis players and two male beginner players. Stroke motion and the three-dimensional information of each part of the human body was measured with 12 motion capture cameras and 6 rackets with different characteristics. By using three-dimensional information, characteristic markers of the tennis strokes were derived. The vertical position of the marker was analyzed, and the change in the stroke motion of each racket was examined. The analysis was performed by comparing the sum of standard deviation and swing speed. As a result, the relationship between the sum of the standard deviation and the swing speed for the stroke motion was shown. It was suggested that a racket suitable for beginners may be presented by presenting the sum of the standard deviation of the z-axis position of the right wrist marker, which has a high correlation with the swing speed, as a racket index

    Stretch Improves Pain and Descent Mechanics

    This study aims to examine the effects of a12-week Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) intervention on pain relief, passive and active joint ROM, external knee adduction moment (KAM) and hip adduction moment (HAM) in the elderly with Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) during stair descent. Seventy-six elderly who were diagnosed with KOA were recruited and randomly divided into two groups: the twelve-week PNF intervention group and the control group. Pain score was measured by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC). KAM, and HAM during stair descent were measured using a motion analysis system with a force platform. All the data were recorded at weeks 0, 6, and 12. Compared to the control group, the PNF group showed a decreased pain score, increased HAM during stair descent. PNF intervention is a successful method to relieve symptoms of KOA. It relieves pain without increasing KAM, enhances passive ROM, increases active knee flexion ROM, and increases HAM during stair descent in the elderly with KOA

    A METHOD FOR CALCULATING DYNAMIC BREAST CENTRE OF MASS DURING RUNNING

    This study aimed to develop a novel method for calculating breast centre of mass (COM) during running for use in musculoskeletal modelling. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and kinematic data were collected from a female participant running at 2.6 m·s-1. A breast surface marker array was used to calculate the COM of 16 segments, based upon tissue composition from the MRI scan. The motion of the surface markers were used to calculate breast COM position during running. Breast COM was more superior, medial and posterior than the nipple marker. Breast COM range of motion was lower (~50%) in all directions during running when compared to the nipple marker. Results suggest that the localised breast deformation is the key factor in calculating breast COM during running

As he adjusts to new life on campus, making friends, entering a relationship, a student goes missing. Campus life is disrupted. Former Boy Detective must now consider whether he’ll continue the life he’s begun to make for himself, or return to the world of mystery and intrigue. This novella or novel in flash was written as my thesis for a Master in Fine Arts

    Zamzaroo, Zarang, and the Rabbit Men

    This short fiction story is the tale of a grandfather, his rabbit, and his adopted granddaughter. This story was originally inspired when I heard the story of a suicidal rabbit. The rabbit never ran away from loud or scary noises. By ignoring his innate survival instincts, he was essentially inviting death. I found it intriguing how stagnancy can be a form of death. Though the story itself is fiction, some of the events that happened to the characters actually happened to people surrounding me. It is my hope that after reading this story, the reader can appreciate how peculiar and fragile life can be

    THE CATASTROPHIC OPEN WOUND: THE APPLICATION OF COMPLEX POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER IN LINDA HOGAN’S SOLAR STORMS AND EDEN ROBINSON’S MONKEY BEACH

    This thesis argues that Judith Herman\u27s theory of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can provide a lot of insight in analyzing the trauma of several characters in Linda Hogan’s Solar Storms and Eden Robinson’s Monkey Beach. The analysis first employs the two authors’ Native American ideas of trauma and then adds Herman’s theory of CPTSD to help bridge the gap between the Native American and Western cultures and to create more understanding without undermining cultural differences. I chose Herman’s theory for my analysis because it has many commonalities with the Native American trauma theories such as belief in the fact that trauma can be ongoing and chronic and that it can have catastrophic consequences extending to multiple families, communities, and generations. The other reason that I believe Herman’s theory is a good fit for my exploration of the Native American characters in these two novels is because her ideas regarding healing and recovery come very close to Hogan and Robinson’s with these two authors’ emphasis on the importance of re-establishing lost familial and communal ties, resisting all forms of oppression, be it private or public, civil or political, and narrating one’s story of trauma and survival in order to situate it in the larger frame of the Native American peoples’ fight for justice and recognition

    Serum-based biomarkers and magnetic resonance imaging following mild traumatic brain injury in collegiate athletes post return-to-play

    Recently there has been an increase in the use of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), to measure the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Proteins such as BDNF, S100B, UCH-L1, and Tau have been found to have altered levels in blood serum after TBI. However, there is limited knowledge about the relationship between serum-based and MRI-based biomarkers in concussed athletes post return-to-play. This study aimed to bridge this gap by collecting serum samples from 42 participants across two groups. The first group (n = 21) consisted of recently cleared to return-to-play collegiate athletes after experiencing a sports-related concussion. The second group (n = 21) was collegiate athlete controls matched on age, sex, and sport. Structural and functional MRI were used for analysis from a subgroup of 26 participants (13 concussed, 13 control). Blood samples were collected to assess the levels of BDNF, S100B, UCH-L1, and Tau. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to analyze protein levels in association with gray matter volume (GMV) and resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) following sports-related concussion. BDNF was the most effective protein at differentiating concussion from control. Significant differential relationships were found between BDNF, S100B, UCH-L1, and Tau with GMV and rsFC, suggesting that serum-based biomarkers may have important clinical implications in concussion diagnosis and treatment
