A REALIZAÇÃO DE /t, d/ DIANTE DE [i] EM UNIÃO DOS PALMARES E SANTANA DO IPANEMA – AL
EXTRATO DE MALTE DE CEVADA COMO SUPLEMENTO NÃO CONVENCIONAL NA PRODUÇÃO DE HIDROMEL POR Saccharomyces bayanus PREMIER BLANC
CARACTERIZAÇÃO DO AMIDO DA AMÊNDOA DA SEMENTE DA MANGA (Mangifera Indica L.) VARIEDADE TOMMY ATKINS
Comparing the Efficacy of Single and Multiple Visits by Honey and Solitary Bees on Sunflower Seed Production
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important oil seed crop with a considerable acreage of cultivated hybrids in Pakistan. Sunflower crops depend on insect pollination for seed setting, as it attracts diverse pollinator fauna, mainly due to pollen and nectar availability. This study was conducted in the agricultural landscape of Multan, Pakistan, to evaluate the role of native and social bees in sunflower seed production. The abundance and diversity of pollinators were assessed. Effectiveness was tested regarding foraging behavior, including visitation rate, stay time, and seed set efficacy for single and multiple visits (5, 10, 15). Additionally, various reproductive success parameters were recorded: flower head (pseudanthium) diameter, flower head weight, seed weight/flower head, and number of seed/flower head. The results showed that the relative abundance of honey bees was the highest (77%) in both years, followed by solitary bees (17%), while syrphid flies were the least abundant (6%) on sunflower. Among honey bees, Apis mellifera and A. dorsata were the most abundant in both years, followed by the solitary bee Xylocopa sp. Furthermore, in single and multiple seed set efficacy (5 and 10 visits), the solitary bee Xylocopa sp. produced the maximum seeds, followed by A. mellifera. Higher seed production could be achieved with a focused conservation plan of solitary and managed bees on sunflower
Assessment of Behavioral and Palynological Attributes of Apis mellifera L. Foragers in a Mustard Ecosystem
An investigation was carried out to assess different foraging activities of Apis mellifera L. in the mustard ecosystem by placing six strong A. mellifera colonies along the borders of mustard fields in the Terai agroecological region of West Bengal during 2019 and 2020. During this period, foragers of A. mellifera had a foraging duration of 9.41 ± 0.33 hours/day. Their activity was higher during mid-day than in the early morning and late evening hours. Temperature and bright sunshine hours strongly correlate with foraging duration and intensity. On the other hand, relative humidity and rainfall were negatively correlated with bee foraging. Foragers were found to spend maximum time on each flower at 11:00 – 13:00 hours, and their abundance was also high during this time interval. At initial hours of observation, i.e., at 07:00 – 09:00, foraging was minimal. The palynological assessment suggested that the foragers carry about 568,640 ± 15426.52 pollen on their bodies during peak foraging time. Apart from the pollen of Brassica sp., some other pollen types belonging to Ageratum conyzoides, Amaranthus/Chenopodium sp., Cajanus cajan, Leucas aspera, Spilanthes sp., and species of Polygonaceae and Solanaceae were also recovered from pollen load. However, these non-Brassica pollen frequency was very low in the pollen spectrum. This study provides information to assist local beekeepers in effectively managing their colonies by correlating foraging activity with weather parameters, and it will also advise mustard growers on establishing a prudent pesticide application schedule that will protect foraging bees from pesticide exposure
Survival and Flight Capacity of Apis mellifera after Contact with Residues of Spiromesifen on Melon Leaves
Balancing the application of insecticides with the preservation of bees in agricultural areas poses a significant challenge to farmers. Therefore, this study aims to assess the survival and flight capacity of Apis mellifera (L.) bees after contact with residues of the insecticide/acaricide Spiromesifen on melon leaves. The experiment occurred under laboratory conditions, in a completely randomized design and a 4x3 factorial scheme, with two doses of Spiromesifen (0.24 and 0.288 g a.i./L), a positive control (Thiamethoxam), and an absolute control (distilled water), at three exposure times: 1, 2, and 3 hours after treatment application. Spiromesifen caused mortality of 15.33% and 13.80% after 1 hour of spraying, 20.05% and 17.72% after 2 hours of spraying, and 21.52% and 14.33% after 3 hours of spraying, for lower and higher doses, respectively. Spiromesifen provided a median lethal time of 112.9 hours, regardless of dose and exposure time. After exposure to the lower dose of Spiromesifen at 1, 2, and 3 hours after spraying, 28.41%, 8.0%, and 17.0% of the bees were able to fly, respectively, while at the higher dose, 33.55% and 8.11% were able to fly after 1 and 2 hours of spraying. Bees exposed after 3 hours of spraying at the higher dose showed a flight activity similar to the absolute control. Contact with Spiromesifen residues on melon leaves was slightly lethal to the honey bee A. mellifera, but it reduced the flight capacity of surviving bees after exposure
