This article outlines the actions undertaken from the academic
year 2022-2023 to 2024-2025 with students pursuing degrees in History and Archaeology across various Spanish universities, focusing on digital epigraphy practices. Starting from a challenging baseline—limited instructional hours and students' lack of prior knowledge of ancient languages and epigraphic conventions—the aim has been to facilitate operational use of key digital epigraphy databases. In this regard, the emergence of AI has served as a catalytic element in managing its application within teaching. Initially, its potential was assessed on an individual basis and subsequently contrasted with its utilization by university students. Rather than demonizing its use, AI has been adapted to address existing
gaps and promote meaningful learning. The primary outcome of this study is its zero-cost applicability, along with an analysis of unconscious malpractice in digital epigraphy among students and the potential for corrective measures with instructor guidance.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovació
Non-linear synthetic time series generation for electroencephalogram data using long short-term memory models
Background/Objectives: The implementation of artificial intelligence-based systems for disease detection using biomedical signals is challenging due to the limited availability of training data. This paper deals with the generation of synthetic EEG signals using deep learning-based models, to be used in future research for training Parkinson?s disease detection systems. Methods: Linear models, such as AR, MA, and ARMA, are often inadequate due to the inherent non-linearity of time series. To overcome this drawback, long short-term memory (LSTM) networks are proposed to learn long-term dependencies in non-linear EEG time series and subsequently generate synthetic signals to enhance the training of detection systems. To learn the forward and backward time dependencies in the EEG signals, a Bidirectional LSTM model has been implemented. The LSTM model was trained on the UC San Diego Resting State EEG Dataset, which includes samples from two groups: individuals with Parkinson?s disease and a healthy control group. Results: To determine the optimal number of cells in the model, we evaluated the mean squared error (MSE) and cross-correlation between the original and synthetic signals. This method was also applied to select the length of the hidden state vector. The number of hidden cells was set to 14, and the length of the hidden state vector for each cell was fixed at 4. Increasing these values did not improve MSE or cross-correlation and unnecessarily increased computational complexity. The proposed model?s performance was evaluated using the mean-squared error (MSE), Pearson?s correlation coefficient, and the power spectra of the synthetic and original signals, demonstrating the suitability of the proposed method for this application. Conclusions: The proposed model was compared to Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) models, demonstrating superior performance. This confirms that deep learning-based models, such as LSTM, are strong alternatives to statistical models like ARMA for handling non-linear, multifrequency, and non-stationary signals.Agencia Estatal de Investigació
Assessment of potential exposure to forest fires in the cross-border area between Spain and Portugal
El análisis refuerza la necesidad de un enfoque supranacional en la gestión del riesgo, adaptado a las particularidades territorialesThis paper analyses the exposure of the population to smoke from forest fires in the cross-border area of southern Ourense (Spain) and northern Portugal. For this purpose, administrative, demographic and fire occurrence data from both countries have been harmonised and standardised, together with atmospheric reanalyses from the CAMS service (PM₁₀ wildfires). The methodology combines relative indicators (fires per km² and fires per 1,000 inhabitants) with the analysis of the potential exposure of the population, differentiating vulnerable groups by age. The results show that the inland areas of Ourense, Alto Minho, Cávado, Alto Tâmega e Barroso and Terras de Trás-os-Montes concentrate the highest rates of fire recurrence and population exposure. The seasonal dynamics show peaks in summer, reaching values of more than 60% of exposed population in some municipalities. The analysis reinforces the need for a supranational approach to risk management, adapted to territorial particularities.Máster Universitario en Tecnologías de la Información Geográfica (M150
Combining national forest inventories reveals distinct role of climate on tree recruitment in European forests
Tree recruitment forms an essential process in forest growth models as it determines the amount and composition of the next generation of trees and, hence, the provision of forest ecosystem services over long time spans. With global change and the hereby associated changes in environmental conditions and forest management adaptations, the common static tree recruitment modelling approaches have become largely obsolete and necessitated the development of more dynamic models. Limited by the availability of data for the parameterisation of tree recruitment processes, such models have only been developed for single species or national frameworks and largely failed to detect climatic influences. In this study, we developed a dynamic tree recruitment model for Europe, utilising National Forest Inventory data from 8 countries with more than 95,000 repeated plot observations and nearly 138,000 individual tree recruitment events. We investigated the effect of forest management, forest structure, soil characteristics, nutrient deposition and five groups of weather and climate variables on the quantity and the species composition of recruiting trees. The climatic groups spanned annual averages, intra annual averages, annual variability, intra annual extremes and a combination of the aforementioned groups. The model with the combination of climate and weather variables outperformed all other groups. We found distinct climatic effects on tree recruitment quantities linked to water limitations and temperature extremes. The results as such showed that tree recruitment quantities benefit from stable climatic conditions, high precipitation and suffer from high maximum temperatures. Increasing temperatures also facilitate the share of recruiting broadleaves. The recruitment species was largely determined by the lead species in a plot, indicating the importance of seed limitation. Furthermore, the results confirm the important role of forest structure in tree recruitment and enable forest managers to steer the next generation of trees. Especially multi-species stands show a clear advantage over single species stands regarding tree recruitment quantities and diverse species compositions. Our research enables dynamic and state-of-the-art recruitment simulations across forests in Europe. It presents a reproducible method that can be applied to forest simulation modelling frameworks
Penal mediation in the resolution of conflicts associated with juvenile delinquency. A comparative study of Cuba and Spain
The protection of children and adolescents constitutes a fundamental priority at the international level, as it is decisive for the proper social and family development of future generations, and acquires particular relevance when it concerns children and adolescents involved in the commission of criminal offences, an area in which criminal law must provide a differentiated response that prioritises the prevention of reoffending and social reintegration over a merely punitive approach, in accordance with the principle of the best interests of the child; in this context, penal mediation and other restorative justice practices emerge as appropriate instruments to address juvenile delinquency from an integrative perspective, aimed at strengthening the substantive and procedural rights and guarantees of juvenile offenders, as well as at repairing harm and promoting social cohesion, although within the Cuban legal system juvenile penal mediation remains at an incipient or embryonic stage, with limited practical experience and without a consolidated and systematic regulatory framework, particularly when compared with more developed models such as the Spanish one; on this basis, this study analyses juvenile penal mediation as a response to juvenile delinquency through a comparative examination of Cuba and Spain, addressing the main challenges posed by this phenomenon in contemporary societies, the configuration of penal mediation as a restorative justice mechanism, and its regulation and application in both legal systems, with the aim of identifying the potentialities and limitations of the Cuban model and drawing, from the Spanish experience, elements that may contribute to its progressive development within the current process of legislative and procedural reform.1. Methodological proposal to evaluate the suitability of different forest fire mitigation strategies in Europe
This work proposes a methodology to analyze the impact of applying different fre risk reduction strategies. The work is part of the European project FirEUrisk (https://freurisk.eu/), aimed at proposing an integrated analysis of fre risk, considering both the assessment and mitigation of present factors and adaptation measures to cope with future conditions. Based on the integration scheme developed in the project, a methodology has been developped that allows for the estimation of risk mitigation scenarios, assuming different reduction proportions of the most important factors that determine it. The results of the simulations are presented as geographic variables, which allow us to analyze the spatial impacts of the different scenarios. The system is applicable to different temporal and spatial scales. In the tests we have carried out, it has been shown that reducing the amount of fuel, both in terms of load and volume, is the most crucial factor for fre mitigation. It is the most prominent factor for woody fuels, although the reduction of ignitions is also important for herbaceous fuels and some shrublands.Comisión Europe
Heritage education and arts-based research, the "Miguel Hernández Cemetery" project
