As part of a project aimed at the pharmacological optimization of Contilisant, herein we describe molecular modelling studies that led to the identification of MBA-159 as a new polyfunctionalized, multitarget-directed ligand and a promising drug candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer?s disease. We synthesized MBA-159 and conducted comprehensive in vitro and in vivo evaluations. In in vivo studies MBA-159 demonstrated favourable pharmacokinetics, anti-amnesic properties and significantly improved non-spatial memory (contextual and recognition memory) in a mouse model of scopolamine-induced amnesia. Additionally, MBA-159 showed a tendency to increase synaptic plasticity biomarkers and reduce neuroinflammatory trends (assessed by qPCR), as well as cognitive enhancement in a senescence-accelerated prone mouse 8 model.

The universality of human rights faces significant challenges that call into question its legitimacy and capacity to respond to the diversity of current realities. Taking as its theoretical starting-point Bergson’s notion of subjective time and as a practical exemplar Proust’s "In Search of Lost Time", this article contends that fiction has the capacity to morph historical context, thereby making it phenomenologically present to readers. As a formal contrast to Proust’s immense novel, Bridget O’Connor’s short stories are analyzed to show how even short fiction can give shape to context, in this case through aspects of style and characterization. As a result, conventional distinctions between history and fiction are elided, which in turn challenges conventional definitions of historical fiction.

    Get PDF

Astrologia Ypocratis and its vernacular early modern afterlives

    No full text
Astrologia Ypocratis is a Latin zodiacal lunary which deals with the prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases according to the phases of the moon in the twelve Zodiac signs. It circulated widely during the Middle Ages in Latin (Thorndike 1960; Kibre 1977, 1978), Middle English (De la Cruz Cabanillas and Diego Rodríguez, 2018), and Middle Dutch (Jansen-Sieben 1983). It endured throughout the early modern period due to the degree of confidence of sixteenth-century society in astrological medicine and the figure of Hippocrates. For the present study, two sixteenth-century witnesses -English and Spanish- are transcribed and collated following Thorndike?s methodology (1960). We aim to establish their genetic filiation, tracing the original versions from which both vernacular translations derive to continue tracing the transmission of the text

The fight against homelessness and its links with anti-poverty policies in Spain

    Get PDF
The national strategy for 2023-2030 to combat homelessness in Spain (ENI-PSH 2023-2030), based on the ETHOS Light typology, defines homeless people as those who live on the street or in temporary accommodation centres. According to the survey of homeless people carried out by the National Institute of Statistics, 28,552 people aged 18 or over were considered as homeless in 2022. This number had increased by 24.5% since 2012, especially among women (by 47.4%), foreigners (35.4%) and people aged under 29 (36.1%). A significant proportion of homeless people had lacked housing for over three years (39.83%); 25% were living rough; and 65% were living in accommodation for the homeless. Some 20% of these accommodation centres catered exclusively to immigrants who were homeless, 7.2% to women victims of gender violence, and the remaining 72.8% were not specialised. There are two differentiated national strategies that are relevant to the fight against homelessness: (a) the specific strategy ENI-PSH for 2023-2030; and (b) a general strategy to combat poverty and social exclusion for 2024-2030 – ENPLPES, which includes the fight against homelessness. Both strategies are elaborated to a greater or lesser extent at the regional or autonomous community level, as well as at the level of large municipalities. These strategies define the principles, general targets, challenges and operational objectives; however, autonomous communities have the exclusive competence in matters of homelessness, together with municipal governments. These strategies are related through policy references, but not in operational terms. They are based on a multi-stakeholder and multi-level territorial, vertical and horizontal governance model, guided by the principle of policy coordination. Both strategies are aligned with the Lisbon Declaration 2021 and the objectives of the European Platform against Homelessness. The ENPLPES does not include specific measures on homelessness, but rather general lines of action linked to other current plans and strategies with a direct impact on the population at risk of poverty or social exclusion and/or in situations of homelessness, such as the ENI-PSH, the state plan for access to housing for 2022-2025, and the objectives of the national strategy for equality, inclusion and participation of the Roma people for 2021-2030. At the same time the ENPLPES broadens the focus of the fight against homelessness to include, in addition to people living on the streets and in residential centres, the different situations of exclusion from decent housing, such as the eradication of slums, and people subjected to eviction from their habitual residence. It also provides for an increase in the public social housing stock for rental by the autonomous communities and municipalities. It is necessary to emphasise that both the ENI-PSH and the ENPLPES give priority to: promoting early targeted intervention; the participation of people affected by situations of poverty and exclusion in the design and evaluation of public policies; the prevention of evictions; and the provision of alternative accommodation through the collaboration between housing services and social services at the regional and local levels. The key mismatch between the regulatory framework and current implementation practices is the lack of coordination between administrative bodies and between the main policies affecting homeless people. The challenge in the fight against homelessness between now and 2030 lies in: consolidating the housing first approach; increasing social investment in social housing, especially in rental housing, while reducing slums and evictions; and, finally, strengthening the coordination between administrative bodies and between social services, housing and health policies at the level of each autonomous community

Development of amorphous AlN thin films on ITO-glass and ITO-PET at low temperatures by RF sputtering

    Get PDF
Aluminum nitride (AlN) is a material of wide interest in the optoelectronics and high-power electronics industry. The deposition of AlN thin films at elevated temperatures is a well-established process, but its implementation on flexible substrates with conductive oxides, such as ITO-glass or ITO-PET, poses challenges due to the thermal degradation of these materials. In this work, the deposition and characterization of AlN thin films by reactive sputtering at a low temperature (RT and 100 °C) on ITO-glass and ITO-PET substrates are presented. The structural, optical, and electrical properties of the samples have been analysed as a function of the sputtering power and the deposition temperature. XRD analysis revealed the absence of peaks of crystalline AlN, indicative of the formation of an amorphous phase. EDX measurements performed on the ITO-glass substrate with a radiofrequency power applied to the Al target of 175 W confirmed the presence of Al and N, corroborating the deposition of AlN. SEM analyses showed the formation of homogeneous and compact layers, and transmission optical measurements revealed a bandgap of around 5.82 eV, depending on the deposition conditions. Electrical resistivity measurements indicated an insulating character. Overall, these findings confirm the potential of amorphous AlN for applications in flexible optoelectronic devices
