Boundary Crossing: An Examination of the Cooperative Efforts Between a School and Museum
Get PDFThis study examines a school-museum partnership between, a public school in Lower Manhattan, and a historical society located in New York City. Utilizing the theoretical framework of Activity Theory and the concept of Boundary Crossing, this research examines the school-museum partnership between P.S. 1994 and the historical society. The partnership between these two institutions has existed for the past six years, which situates it as an example of a long-term, successful collaboration between two organizations. In pursuit of understanding the establishment and implementation of this school-museum partnership, data was collected, examined and analyzed. This case study seeks to identify specific elements that have sustained this partnership over the years
Teens in Queens: Engaging Teens Living in Queens, New York through Museum Partnerships
Get PDFThe teen program presented in this document was inspired by my own experiences living and attending school in Queens, New York. This program is designed as a museum partnership between the New York Hall of Science, the Queens Museum, and the Queens County Farm Museum, for the benefit of middle school adolescents living or attending school in Queens, New York. This year long program exposes teens to local museums, connecting three different content areas (STEM, art, and agriculture) in museum settings. During the program, teens will engage with their community on a deeper level, learn through skill based activities, explore social issues through art, and gain knowledge of sustainable agriculture. An exhibition displaying a project of their choice will be displayed at the end of the year. This program seeks out three major goals: to meaningfully engage teens in museum settings, establish mentor relationships between teens and museum educators, and to make connections to their communities and everyday lives. This proposal includes how to execute this type of programming, why it is important, along with curriculum and lesson plans

Get PDFThis paper, Integrating A Farm Study Into A Mixed Age Classroom, explores the impact and benefits of integrating a farm study into a classroom. It reports on the course and the results of how students responded to the farm study over one full school year. In addition, it shows how the integrated farm study could be incorporated into the core academic topics such as reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. In fact, this paper proves how students become more motivated and engaged to learn in the core academic topics through their focus on the farm study. The class that was subject to this study was composed of seven students, in one classroom together, ranging from Kindergarten to Third grade. These students are inhabitants of the Manhattan, New York and have minimal exposure to farm life. The paper suggests that going in depth into learning about a farm and farm stands will create more conscious citizens who have more of an understanding of the world around them, motivate students into learning their core studies, and be more aware of making healthy food choices

Facilitating a Block Program in Kindergarten and First Grade: A Manual for Kindergarten and First Grade Teachers
Get PDFMany preschool classroom have unit blocks. Unfortunately, not as many early primary classrooms incorporate blocks into their programs. This paper discusses the power of using unit blocks in a Kindergarten and first grade. The first three sections of the thesis focus on the importance of a unit block curriculum in early primary classrooms by discussing the developmentally-appropriate ways blocks invite problem solving and mathematical and scientific thinking. The final section is a teacher’s manual designed as a guidebook to support teachers who are starting a block program in their Kindergarten and first grade classroom. In this manual, critical components of a block program, such as setting up a block center, creating pick-up routines, and connecting blocks to a social studies curriculum are discussed. Overall, this paper and manual demonstrate that blocks are an invaluable tool that integrates learning in numerous ways
Indigo Was Our Class Pet: An Exploration of Death in Children’s Literature
Get PDFDeath is a complicated and emotionally weighty subject. Therefore, discussing it can be taboo in early childhood classrooms. Although this is meant to protect children, the lack of discussion limits their mental and emotional processing of bereavement and ultimately undermines their understanding of death. After teaching in a Pre-K classroom with a terminally ill reptile, the author was inspired to write a children’s book about the death of a class pet. The text reviews typical developmental milestones for five-year-olds, the target age of the book. Fives are at an age where their frameworks for understanding the world are shifting; therefore, this is an appropriate age to discuss death directly. In the following section, the author researched the field of children’s literature for picture books that address death. Such books have the important job of guiding children and adults through these difficult, but necessary, conversations. The paper concludes that the author’s book would be a worthy addition to this collection of literature, as no books that specifically address the death of a class pet were found

Implementation of an Online Adolescent Oncology Support Group
Get PDFAdolescence is a time for social and emotional growth and learning how they interact and engage in the world around them. When an adolescent is diagnosed with a life threatening cancer diagnosis, it can have a substantial impact on their ability to maintain social and emotional connections with their peers. Disruptions in school and peer relationships can lead to isolation, withdrawal and poor coping. Many factors contribute to a teens inability to stay connected with their current peer group, as well as make it difficult to develop and meet new peers in the hospital setting that are also coping with a cancer diagnosis. With an increase in adolescents use of technology, phone use and social media, an online support group was established for teens undergoing and 1 year post cancer treatment in a rural hospital setting. The group was implemented, facilitated and evaluated by a certified child life specialist. This paper will examine the effectiveness of an online platform for teens diagnosed and undergoing cancer treatment for improving peer relations, increased coping, and expression of feelings
