Ernst Vollrath war der erste deutsche Philosoph von Gewerbe, der sich intensiv mit dem 
Werk von Hannah Arendt beschäftigte. In der Zeitschrift für Politik veröffentlichte er 1971 
den Aufsatz „Politik und Metaphysik: Zum politischen Denken von Hannah Arendt“, der 
heute zu Unrecht vergessen ist. Unter den inzwischen zahllosen Einführungen und 
Übersichten zu Hannah Arendt zeichnet er sich dadurch aus, dass er nicht über oder ge -
gen, sondern mit Arendt philosophiert und so ihre Hauptwerke erschließt. Vollrath hat 
ihm im Laufe der Jahre eine Reihe weiterer Studien folgen lassen. 1 Unermüdlich hat er 
das, was er Arendts „Phänomenologie des Politischen“ nennt, im deutschen Sprachraum 
bekannt und verständlich gemacht.2
Im Jahre 1970 hatte er Hannah Arendt persönlich kennengelernt – über einen gemein-
samen Freund, den Kinderarzt Johannes Zilkens, der damals als Vertrauensdozent der 
Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes wirkte. Von der persönlichen Beziehung zeugt ein 
Briefwechsel, der im Februar 1970 einsetzt und bis zu Arendts Tod in ca. dreißig Briefen 
überliefert ist.3 Vollrath schreibt an die „sehr verehrte“, die „hochverehrte und liebe“ Frau 
Arendt oder auch „Gnädige Frau“, später gebraucht er immer mal wieder die einfache An -
rede „Liebe Frau Arendt“, und ab 1975 dann leitet ein „Liebe Hannah“ die Briefe ein. Un -
ter „Lieber Herr Vollrath“ und „Lieber Ernst“ kommen ihre meist recht kurz und knapp 
gehaltenen Antworten. Damit sind Zeichen gesetzt: hier der 1932 geborene, also etwa 
vierzigjährige deutsche Privatdozent, der am Anfang seiner Karriere steht, und dort die zu 
jener Zeit über sechzigjährige politische Philosophin, die zu den Berühmtheiten in der 
Profession und einer transatlantischen intellektuellen Öffentlichkeit gehört. Die Briefe 
dokumentieren einen überwiegend berufsbezogenen Austausch in verschiedenen Facet-
ten: fachlich sowie universitäts- und allgemein politisch – schon unter Gleichen, aber un-
gleichgewichtig.
Wie eine große Meisterin wird Hannah Arendt von dem Jüngeren verehrt und studiert: 
„Ich bin eben noch ein blutiger Anfänger in der ‚Politischen Theorie’ und habe noch viel 
zu lernen“ (12.12.1970). Sie dagegen fühlt sich mal weniger, mal mehr verstanden. „Je 
mehr ich ... nachdenke, umso deutlicher wird mir“, schreibt er gleich im ersten Brief 
(06.02.1970), „dass Ihr ganzes Bemühen darauf geht, die metaphysische Konstellation 
des Politischen, die zu einem Verfall des Politischen geführt hat, zu destruieren.“ Sie ant-
wortet schon fast ein wenig unwillig (05.03.1970): „Sie haben ganz recht, dass mein 
Bemühen darauf geht, allerdings nicht so sehr ‚die metaphysische Konstellation des Poli-

tischen’ zu destruieren, als auf das Denken über das Politische.“ Dass Vollrath dennoch 
mit seiner Einschätzung nicht ganz so falsch liegt, wissen all diejenigen, die sich an ein Zi -
tat am Ende von Arendts Vorlesung Thinking erinnern. Dort bekennt sie: „Ich bin eindeu-
tig denen beigetreten, die jetzt schon einige Zeit versuchen, die Metaphysik und die Philo -
sophie ... zu demontieren.“4
Auf den erwähnten Aufsatz in der Zeitschrift für Politik, den Vollrath mit Brief vom 
14.11.1971 übersendet, reagiert Arendt mit lobenden Worten (09.12.1971): „Ihr Geschenk 
zu meinem Geburtstag hat mir die allergrößte Freude gemacht – nichts Vergleichbares 
über mich ist je zustande gekommen. Ich wünschte, ich könnte Sie hier [in New York an 
der Graduate Faculty der New School for Social Research] in der Nähe haben, wenigstens 
für einige Zeit, und – mit der Bitte, dies unter uns zu lassen – bemühe mich augenblick-
lich darum. Ob es mir gelingen wird, ist mehr als fraglich. Ich stelle mir manchmal vor, 
dass wir ein Seminar zusammen machen könnten und was wohl da herauskommen wür-
de.“ „Für mich wäre es ganz wunderbar, mit Ihnen zusammen etwas machen zu können“, 
lautet die Antwort (19.12.1971): „Das wäre ganz herrlich.“
Tatsächlich gelang es Hannah Arendt, zunächst Freund Hans Jonas, dann die Graduate 
Faculty zu überzeugen und den deutschen Nachwuchswissenschaftler an die New School 
zu holen, wo er ab 1973 unterrichtete. Im Kreis der Arendt-Freunde und –Kollegen hatte 
er sich bereits im November 1972 eingeführt. Auf der in Toronto abgehaltenen Tagung 
„The Work of Hannah Arendt“ präsentierte er sich mit einem Vortrag „Judgment and 
Opinion“.5 An der New School gab Vollrath seine Kurse in politischer Theorie / Philoso-
phie und nahm immer wieder auch an Arendts Veranstaltungen teil, zu dem angedachten 
gemeinsamen Seminar jedoch ist es nicht gekommen. Nach Arendts Tod im Dezember 
1975 blieb Vollrath noch für kurze Zeit an der New School und kehrte 1976 nach Deutsch-
land zurück, um bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1999 als Professor für Philosophie 
an der Universität Köln zu lehren.
Hannah Arendts Denken habe, so schreibt Vollrath in einem seiner Briefe (14.11.1971), 
„ganz außerordentlich dazu beigetragen, dass ich mich über mich selbst verständigt 
habe“. Einige Monate später (16.05.1972) zeigt er sich „begeistert und hingerissen“ von 
ihrem neuesten Buch Crises of the Republic und schließt die rhetorische Frage an: „Ist es 
vermessen, wenn ich sage, dass mir beim Lesen es so vorkommt, als wären diese Gedan -
ken in mir selbst erzeugt?“ Diese geistige Nähe, ja fast schon Symbiose vermittelt sich im 
wesentlichen über Kant und die Auslegung seiner Schrift Kritik der Urteilskraft. In den 
Briefen kündigt Vollrath ein Projekt „Die Rekonstruktion der politischen Urteilskraft“ an 
– das Buch, das 1977 erscheinen wird.
Die Verehrung und Bewunderung des jüngeren Kollegen wird Hannah Arendt ge-
schmeichelt haben. Er war ihr als Gesprächspartner ebenso wertvoll wie als „escort“ im 
als nicht mehr so sicher erlebten New York (Vollraths Selbstwahrnehmung). In ihrem

Spätwerk Vom Leben des Geistes, an dem sie in den letzten Jahren ihres Lebens vor allem 
arbeitete, oder in Briefen an Dritte findet sich allerdings kein Hinweis auf ihn. Nur ein 
Gespräch hielt sie in Stichwörtern in ihrem Denktagebuch (dort Heft XXVIII, 8) fest.
Im Jahr 2001 erhielt Ernst Vollrath, der „Theoretiker“ – zusammen mit Daniel Cohn-
Bendit, dem „Praktiker“ – den Hannah-Arendt-Preis für politisches Denken.6 Beide ha-
ben, so die Laudatorin Brigitte Sauzay, „mit ihren Werken und ihrer Arbeit unsere politi-
sche Kultur geprägt und gepflegt“ – eine Kultur, deren antitotalitäre Ausrichtung u.a. 
auch Hannah Arendt geschuldet ist. Vollrath, der zur Preisverleihung nicht persönlich er-
scheinen konnte, bedankte sich für die Ehrung mit dem von seinem Sohn Christian verle-
senen Essay „Vom ‚radikal Bösen’ zur ‚Banalität des Bösen’: Überlegungen zu einem Ge-
dankengang von Hannah Arendt“.7 Doch es ist nicht dieser Essay, der seine letzten öffent-
lichen Worte über Hannah Arendt enthält, sondern die 2003 erschienene Studie Was ist 
das Politische? Hier fasst er noch einmal zusammen, warum Hannah Arendt als politische 
Theoretikerin in seinen Augen so bedeutsam ist: 
„Es ist Hannah Arendt gelungen, den Typ des Wissens und der vernunfthaften 
weltlichen Rationalität wenigstens im Ansatz zu bestimmen, der dem kontingenten, 
optionalen, weltlichen, gegenhandelnden, alles zusammengehörige Charaktere, 
Phänomen des Politischen angemessen ist. ... In der reflektierenden Urteilskraft ... ist 
ein Vermögen entdeckt, welches nicht nach vorgegebenen Begriffen verfährt, sondern 
den begrifflichen Horizont für sein Urteilen von ihm selbst her, von seiner 
reflektierenden Tätigkeit her, entwirft und so den begrifflichen Horizont selbst 
schafft. ... Die reflektierende Urteilskraft ist der Typus der neuen Wahrnehmung des 
Politischen.“8 
In diesem Sinne scheint Hannah Arendt für ihn den Boden bereitet zu haben; denn es 
geht ihm um eine Theorie des Politischen und seiner neuen Wahrnehmung.
Nach langer, mit bewundernswertem Mut bekämpfter Krankheit starb Ernst Vollrath 
am 30. Januar 2004 in Bochum. Ungeachtet seiner Verdienste um die deutsche Arendt-
Rezeption sowie seines Beitrages zur politischen Philosophie und Kultur der Bundesrepu-
blik wird er vielen, die ihn persönlich kannten, als ein Philosoph in Erinnerung bleiben, 
dem in besonderem Mass eine Kraft zum Positiven gegeben war. Dies ist auch in seinen 
Briefen an Hannah Arendt dokumentiert. Philosophieren macht Spaß, so hätte er, ein 
Arendt-Wort abwandelnd, sagen können. Und in der Tat gibt es eine nicht ganz unähnli-
che Aussage von ihm, zu der er sich in einer öffentlichen Diskussion hat hinreißen lassen: 
Kants An-der-Stelle-jedes-anderen-Denken sei „das Schönste von der Welt“. 9

Rose Feitelson died on March 1, 2001, at the age of 86, at her home in New York City. 
Born and raised in New York with a younger brother, she was the daughter of a Jewish 
family of Russian descent. After a college education (M.A.), she worked at the Jewish 
Theological Seminary in New York and at the American Jewish Committee. A friend to 
Hannah Arendt and Heinrich Blücher, whom she met during World War II, she became 
particularly known as one of Arendt’s “Englishers” – “our closest friend” who “arranges 
my English”.  Rose – or “Röschen,” as in the Arendt-Blücher correspondence – belonged  
ganz zur Familie, “totally” to the family (Arendt to Kurt Blumenfeld, cf. below).
Arendt and Feitelson saw each other frequently in New York, professionally and 
socially, and they travelled together. In 1951, Hannah acknowledged Rose's help publicly 
in her book The Origins of Totalitarianism: “My greatest thanks are due to Rose Feitelson 
who has been of invaluable assistance to me in editing the manuscript.” And in 1965, in a 
letter of recommendation, she wrote about her friend: “I have known Miss Feitelson for 
over twenty years; for more than fifteen years, she edited and sometimes re-wrote my 
books and articles, and I have always valued highly her intelligence, her great sensitivity 
for language and style, her ability to grasp and assimilate all kinds of information and 
knowledge.” A copy of this letter is preserved in the Hannah Arendt Collection at the 
Library of Congress, where it is filed among the letters exchanged between the two 
friends. Rose Feitelson’s vivid spirit, her sharp and witty mind speak from her letters. 
Unfortunately, hardly any correspondence from Arendt’s hand is preserved, but after 
Feitelson’s death, one letter surfaced. It was written on April 29, 1957, when Hannah was 
in New York and Rose in Israel. This letter was given to the Oldenburg Hannah Arendt-
Zentrum and the Hannah-Arendt.net editors  by Lotte Köhler, who found it among 
Feitelson’s papers after her death. We publish it to remember Rose Feitelson and her 
friendship with Hannah Arendt, together with Feitelson's letter of April 20, 1957, which 
preceded it.
In the spring of 1957, Rose Feitelson travelled to Israel as an American delegate of the 
International Council of Jewish Women to attend a Congress of this organization in 
Jerusalem. We know about this from the correspondence between Hannah Arendt and 
her long-term friend Kurt Blumenfeld. Arendt had announced Feitelson’s coming in her 
letter of December 12, 1956: “Rose ist eigentlich unsere engste Freundin hier; sie bringt 
mir seit 10 Jahren mein Englisch in Ordnung und gehört ganz zur Familie.“ (Cf. Hannah 
Arendt and Kurt Blumenfeld,“... in keinem Besitz verwurzelt”: Die Korrespondenz, ed. by 
Ingeborg Nordmann and Iris Pilling [Hamburg: Rotbuch, 1995], pp. 169, 173f.) Rose 
stayed in Jerusalem for several weeks. On April 20, 1957, she wrote a long letter to 
Hannah, reporting on her experiences. Apparently, this letter was mailed together with a 
manuscript which she had edited for Arendt, who at the time was preparing her Walgreen 
Lectures for publication under the title The Human Condition.

In The Human Condition (first published in 1958), Hannah Arendt wrote in her 
acknowledgments: “Rose Feitelson, who has helped me ever since I began to publish in 
this country, was again of great assistance in the preparation of manuscript and index. If I 
had to be grateful for what she has done over a period of twelve years, I would be 
altogether helpless.” Rose, on her part, preferred to remain in the background and not 
talk or write publicly about her relationship with Arendt and Blücher. But from her 
correspondence with Hannah, e.g., the letter printed below, it is clear that she enjoyed 
working for her friend.
Some information on the persons mentioned in the letters may be helpful. 
"Kurt" or “Kurtchen” is Kurt Blumenfeld, “Jenny” his wife. who was reponsible for 
organizing the Jerusalem conference. “Lilli” is Lilli Mendelsohn, who worked with the 
Jewish Agency in London; she died in 1950.
"Sebba" is an "old friend" from Königsberg. He studied law and fleeing the Nazis, 
emigrated to Haifa where he set up a business (information from Käthe Fürst, who could 
not remember his full name).
“Mary” is Mary McCarthy. Roger Straus, Jr. founded the New York publishing 
house Farrar, Straus, later Farrar Straus Giroux. “Philip” is Philip Rahv, co-editor, with 
William Phillips, of Partisan Review. “Nathalie”, née Swan, a Vassar classmate of Mary 
McCarthy, was then married to Philip Rahv. “Dwight” is Dwight Macdonald, political 
writer, and at the time, like McCarthy, Arendt, Rahv, and Diana Trilling, he was well-
known as a New York “public intellectual.” They all were so-called “Partisans,” i.e.,

Dear Hannah -- 
With the help of God, which in this country means an out of the ordinary efficiency of the 
mail services, it is now before May lst, as I promised.  I said the other day that this paper 
is a glory, but it will bear repeating.
A month in Israel, spent, I confess, working on the same kind of garbage as I do in New 
York, has served only to confirm what I thought before:  a state made up only of Jews is 
the closest thing to my conception of hell that could have been created on earth.  Imagine, 
nearly two million Rechthaber!  Even those who criticize are that way.  And it has been 
my misfortune to need the office facilities and help of some of the worst, Foreign Office 
personnel, etc., people in whose big-shot company l wouldn't be seen dead in New York.
Kurt was a blessing. What a wonder he must have been.  Now, of course, he's declining 
fast and, I'm afraid, growing a little resentful, although heaven knows he has cause. 
Jenny, whom, as you predicted, I don't like, was nevertheless almost too kind to me.  She 
included me in the family Seder in Haifa and saw to it that I have a good time between 
periods of slavery. But she's "getting even" with Kurt, playing the more important one 
while he withers, and never failing to point out the difference.  She made it almost 
impossible for me to see him alone, but we managed sometimes nevertheless.  Kurtchen 
fell in love with me, poor thing, trying to do it in the style of thirty years ago, which must 
have been not bad. He told me the whole story of his meeting with Lilli, how she fell in 
love with him at once, how when he asked her whom she loved she answered "Sie."  The 
next day he arrived here at Ascher' s, early in the morning, and repeated the question to 
me.  Evidently "keinen" was not the right answer.  Well, the details of this story will wait 
for home. I still don't know whether to laugh or cry. 
For the first few weeks, the country was on an austerity basis, which meant really that 
one was always cold.  The idea of having our Convention meetings at the University was 
sheer insanity, because in order to get to the Sessions we had to trek knee-deep in mud 
twice a day.  And the expenses were fierce.  At the slightest complaint, Jenny used to tell 
me that the Wizo [Women's International Zionist Organisation] spent I£ 20,000 for their 
conference. There is no such thing here as a promise -- I waited two weeks longer than 
agreed for the tape-recorded protocol from which to write the minutes, for example.  
When I tell you that compared with the people one must work with here, Mrs. Willen is an 
angel of rectitude, you will get the idea.  It takes four days for a message to get to Tel Aviv 
if you send it by mail; if you place a call to someone in a hotel in Haifa, for example, you 
get the hotel soon enough, relatively, but then the switchboard operator forgets about you 
for the next half hour and the only way to reach your party is to hang up and place the call 
all over again; and so on ad infinitum.  The real danger for me here is that I shall become 
a 150% American.

The most startling thing now is the francophilia.  The French Ambassador has become the 
most important man in the country.  One day during the conference, when we were 
discussing the fact that we have no affiliate in France (the chief reason is that the Zionist 
groups won't allow it) one important Israeli woman, the Deputy Speaker of the Knesseth, 
said this was a piece of gross neglect on the part of the American officials since France is, 
after all, the most important country in the world today.  I told her later that the only 
thing to do now was to convince the French of it, so she said I was a Sabra. However, in 
case you are worried, I have not been a bad girl and really shot my mouth off, not even 
when a high Foreign Office official tried to explain to me what public opinion in America 
was after the Sinai campaign and during the UN discussions (it seems that everyone in 
America "knew" that Israel policy was both noble, and word some of the more spiritual 
characters like to use, and brilliant – only Abba Eban [Israel's delegate to the UN and 
Ambassador in Washington] made mistakes ), or when another sujet told me how 
courageous I and the other six women from the States had been to "defy" State 
Department regulations and come to Israel (I only answered that we came here legally, 
without comment on where I should go first if the law stood in my way).
By the way, some Americans did indeed come illegally, and the border officials here did 
not stamp their passports.  When I arrived, I had to assure them that it was perfectly all 
right to stamp mine.
You have seen long since that none of my impressions is exactly clear right now, so this 
letter must be a bore.  Just one thing:  although it's true that the withdrawal was very 
unpopular, there is no itching at the moment to start again, as far as I can see, although 
practically everybody takes it for granted that it's only a matter of prudence and 
cleverness that prevents the Israeli army from moving into Trans-Jordan, which doesn't 
belong there anyway (an unnatural state, which of course Israel is not).  The only 
question, when they do it, is whether they should take both sides of the Jordan. "We could 
be in Amman in 24 hours."
I think I shall leave Israel about May 1, depending on what kind of boat I can get, either 
to Piraeus or Istanbul.  I have decided to do the rest of this trip by boat, for I am really 
sick and tired of plane travel and l'm really not in a terrible hurry. 
I miss both you and Heinrich terribly, especially here.  Being so busy is exciting, and it 
would be a bare-faced lie to say I am unhappy, but there are times when I would give 
anytling to say what I please about whatever I please and to be with those about whom I 
never bother to make judgments. My attitude toward nearly everyone here I see is tinged, 
I confess, with more or less contempt, justly or not. Well, Europe is not far away now.
And one last word about the manuscript.  In one or two places – I noted it in the 
margin – I may have made improper revisions because I was not sure what you meant.  
Otherwise, this section was thrilling to work on. Have you ever stopped to think how 
much I've learned from working on your stuff?

Dearest Rose –
the ms. just arrived and I drop everything to write.  Not out of Ruehrung that you did it 
despite everything, but because I miss you so much and because your letter reminded me 
how much I miss you.  And then, before I got your letter, I was worried, somehow in the 
back of my mind all the time, because your mother had not telephoned and I did not want 
to call her.  Telling myself that I should surely know if anything had not gone as it should.  
(By the way, I am geruehrt, all the same.) Your description of Israel – precisely; but I was 
glad to read it.  When I was there, I was in a bad mood – Sebba (an old friend, age of 
Kurtchen) with Parkinson disease, my family, Kurtchen, whom I had seen before in the 
same dilapidated state you know, with Jenny, who certainly got more than even with him 
– briefly so many purely personal factors that I was afraid I was no longer able to judge 
objectively, but was spreading my unhappiness all over the damned country. I was never 
sure whether the country got on my nerves, or if I was nervous. – Kurt once was quite 
somebody and the story with Lilli gives you probably an inkling. Still – when she lay dying 
in London, he did not go.  The usual pretexts – it would have been bad for her, he did not 
have money.  True reason probably Jenny. But difficult to overlook all the same. He does 
not know it, but one of his oldest friends, Martin Rosenblueth, never forgave him. – As to 
his mistakes, he made only one that proved to be crucial: he left Germany in 1933, ran 
away – from Hitler and Lilli – because Jenny demanded it, had taken herself and the 
children to Israel and set up in state and luxury. That was scandalous.  At the time, he 
knew it was the mistake of his life.  Later he forgot.
Here – chiefly that you are not there, so nobody with whom I can for instance “discuss” 
lengthily and deliciously one of Mary’s more phantastic messes – a farewell party she had 
persuaded Roger Straus to give in his house for Rahv, with 65 people or so, each of them 
supposedly armed with a gift (not more than $ 2.-, so that he would have walked away 
with the inventory of a 5 & 10 shop) and a verse, in evening dress to walk into the house 
on a gangplank (from Macy’s) – the perfect dream of a Riviera millionaire – with Russian 
Eastern delicacies (only to remember that Rahv was not only Russian but Jewish too, so 
that this part of refreshments might look antisemitic – New York’s version of the Jewish 
question).  And then, how first Nathalie in one of her sober moments thought that this 
surely was impossible, and called Philip in the country, whereupon both got drunk (I 
suppose) and full of persecution complexes (Philip to Mary: “You and your lousy party” 
when they finally had to be consoled by me at our place) and Nathalie firmly convinced 
that Mary had done it out of spite or some secret devilry, how then – partly in 
consequence, partly upon reflection – Roger acquired a persecution complex (everybody 
will come and make fun of me in my own house, they will whisper in the corners and eat 
my food and drink my wine or rather Mary’s food, I suppose), but unfortunately at the 
moment when Rahv had gotten over his [this], so that when he proposed to cancel the 
party at the last moment, it was clear: “This will kill Philip.” But cancelled it was, we all

received telegrams, and Philip survived, but badly, and Mary, not for the life of her, could 
she understand what had been wrong – Hannah, you are in the camp of the enemy, when 
I told her that I had no intention to come –; all she wanted was to have for once a real nice 
party, not such a boring one ... And as for the gifts: but all real respectable middleclass 
people do it – I said, for brides, and Philip is not a bride. Nothing doing.  Meanwhile, 
Diana Trilling is expecting already that Mary’s next book will be called The Party.
Heinrich is in Bard. Gives a wonderful course, one of the best he ever gave at the New 
School. Let me know from Greece. I almost envy you ---

[PS] See what you miss? I suppose the story of the death of Dwight’s mother occurred 
when you were still here.  Let me know how long you are staying in Greece.  I am

TITLE OF THE PROJECT:  The problems of violence between peoples, nations, races and 
the sexes in the 20th  century - What is revealed by the thought of Hannah Arendt?
The central topic of these 2 years of research has been the question how Arendt, who 
elaborated her work in the age of hitherto unprecedented wars and revolutions, known as 
the 20th century, viewed the prospective 21st century. In the present day, with the 
influence of Arendt's thought reaching into many different areas, it has become possible 
to pursue this theme from the multiplicity of stances represented by the various 
researchers involved.
In the first year, in order to renew the mutual understanding between those involved in 
the research programme, we reinterpreted Arendt's thought from the point of view of 
feminism based on the theme "Identity, Difference, Politics". As part of this we invited 
Lisa Dish, one of the leading feminists from Minnesota University in America, to be our 
guest speaker at symposiums and seminars held in Tokyo (Keio University) and Kyoto 
(Ritsumeikan University).
Our three Japanese speakers Nishimoto Ikuko, Ito Hironari and Yamashita Yone also 
raised the global and vital issues that they themselves were confronting in their own 
research. Lisa's comments in relation to the three speakers' contributions were most 
illuminating and all those who attended left feeling stimulated and enriched.
In the second year, we proceeded to build on the achievements of the first year and, 
with the translation of Arendt's works in each country in Asia and the appearance of new 
young researchers on the scene, we were able to broaden our vision, inviting more guest 
speakers from abroad and holding symposiums and seminars in Kyoto (Ritsumeikan 
University) and Okinawa (University of the Ryukyus).
First of all, in the symposium titled 'Politicizing Arendt's Political Thought: How did we 
read Arendt in the 90's' held in Kyoto, we received reports from You-Kyung Suh of the 
Kyung Hee University, Jiang Yi-huah from Taiwan National University, Wolfgang Heuer 
of the Free Berlin University and Kodama Shigeo. Two days later, we reconvened at the 
University of the Ryukyus to hold a symposium entitled 'The World of Fragmentation and 
Arendt' with a report from Naminira Tsuneo of University of the Ryukyus, Shimabukuro 
Jun as guest speaker, and Masuda Kazuo, Chiba Shin and Shimizu Kiyoko giving a joint 
report.
The perspective of Okinawa, situated both literally and metaphorically on the barrier-
like national boundaries of the Japanese state, had a strong impact on the three guest 
speakers. It was clear that the speakers shared the sentiments of the other participants in 
feeling keenly that the Okinawan perspective was a new one that created a vital

opportunity for fresh approaches to the problems posed by the exclusive and strongly 
nationalist Japanese state.
Through the joint research described above we were able to establish an effective 
network connecting those researching Arendt in Japan. At the same time, we were able to 
collectively reaffirm the necessity for active involvement in the all pervasive issue of the 
attack on the World Trade Center and the war on Afghanistan which occurred with such 
unsettling timing in the first year of the 21st Century. The resolution to do this was felt by 
all participants regardless of country of origin and the affirmation of this commitment 
made on this occasion in Japan resonated in our hearts.

„Was für ein Bild hat Europa von Amerika?“, fragt Hannah Arendt in einem ihrer Essays. 
Was für ein Bild hat Amerika von Europa, lässt sich komplementär dazu fragen. Wie steht 
es um die europäisch-amerikanischen Beziehungen heute, wo beide Kontinente sich in ei-
ner Phase des Umbruchs und der Neudefinition befinden? Wie wird das transatlantische 
Verhältnis in den USA diskutiert an einem Ort, der an der Geschichte des intellektuellen 
amerikanisch-europäischen Austauschs mitgeschrieben hat? Das kleine, renommierte 
Bard College liegt 90 Meilen außerhalb von New York im idyllischen Hudson Valley. Heu-
te unterrichtet dort der international bekannte rumänische Schriftsteller Norman Manea 
als Professor für Europäische Kulturgeschichte. Auf dem collegeeigenen Friedhof befindet 
sich das Grab von Hannah Arendt und ihrem Ehemann Heinrich Blücher, der in den 50er 
und 60er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts am Bard College lehrte. Sie beide hat 
sich Barbara Eisenmann in ihrem Feature »Transatlantic Crossings« als intellektuelle 
Führer über den Campus des Bard College gewählt.

1. Der Journalist Günter Gaus, dessen Interview mit Hannah Arendt in seiner berühmten 
Reihe ‚Zur Person’ am 28. Oktober 1964 vom ZDF gesendet wurde. Gaus starb am 14. Mai 
2004.
„Das beste Gespräch, das ich je geführt habe, war das mit Hannah Arendt. Es fand 
1964 statt. Sie war damals in einer sehr schwierigen Situation. Sie hatte ihr Buch 
Eichmann in Jerusalem geschrieben, das ihr große Feindseligkeit in Israel eingetra-
gen hatte. Ich war mit großem Bangen an dieses Interview herangegangen. Hannah 
Arendt war eine bedeutende politische Philosophin, und ich hatte gehörigen Respekt. 
Als ich zum Vorgespräch zu ihr ins Hotel ging, traf ich auf eine außergewöhnlich 
charmante Dame. Ich habe mich vom Fleck weg in sie verliebt – wirklich. Das hat si-
cherlich auf die Qualität des Gesprächs, des Interviews eingewirkt.“

In seinen soeben erschienen Erinnerungen schreibt Gaus:
„Vielleicht wurde mir erst jetzt ganz bewußt, mit welcher intellektuellen Courage sie 
sich mit ihrem Eichmann-Buch gegen die herrschende Meinung in der jüdischen 
Weltöffentlichkeit gestellt – die Öffentlichkeit jenes Volkes, zu dem sie sich ganz zu-
gehörig fühlte, was für sie aber erst in ihrer freimütigen Distanzierung vom Herr-
schenden seinen Ausdruck fand (…) Jahre später las ich in dem Briefwechsel zwi-
schen Hannah Arendt und Karl Jaspers, was sie im Oktober 1964, dem Monat unse-
res Interviews, an ihren in Basel lebenden alten Lehrer geschrieben hatte: ‚Ich hatte 
den Eindruck, viel zu spontan gesprochen zu haben, weil ich den Gaus so gut leiden 
konnte.’“

2. Der Schriftsteller Robert Lowell:
„[...] I want to send you a few books or two at least. Hannah [Arendt]'s book on revo-
lutions is somewhat diffuse and theoretical but is full of things that give me pause 
and I think we would both feel. She approves of the American Revolution but finds it 
somehow somewhat abstract and inspired no serious thought after Jefferson and the 
founders. The French Revolution however which she thinks doomed to violence and 
tyranny began with pity for the miserable, set up standards of violence and unlimited 
desire and has inspired generations of thinkers. She is wonderful on how sentiments 
of compassion get changed into blood power-lust and dictatorship. This is a very 
garbled way of expressing her dense thought, but she brings home to me frightenin-
gly how certain redcapped liberal feelings can go with a sinister acceptance of the ter-
rible. [...]“

„My introduction to moral philosophy came from Hannah Arendt during the one year 
she taught at Berkeley. Later, she was the discussant on my first essay on the theory 
of revolution that led to a subsequent book. I’ll never forget when she said, <You’re 
right, but you write abominably. Hobbes said all this better than you have. But, 
nonetheless, nice try for a kid. You are on the right track.> It was very flattering.“

cluding Revolutionary Change including Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of Ame-
rican Empire and his His new book The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy and the 
End of the Republic 2004.
"Arme Hannah" oder Die Karriere eines Unzitats 
Johannes Rau liebt den Satz: "Politik ist angewandte Liebe zur Welt“, und er schreibt ihn 
Hannah Arendt zu, die ihn so aber nie zu äußern gedachte. Während der fünften „Han-
nah-Arendt-Tage“ in Hannover 2002 sagte der damalige Bundespräsident: 
„Einen Satz von Hannah Arendt, der mir besonders wichtig ist und mich schon lange 
Zeit begleitet, möchte ich ganz an den Anfang meiner Überlegungen stellen: ‚Politik 
ist angewandte Liebe zur Welt’.“

Rau verwendete diesen Satz immer wieder, so 1999 bei seiner Antrittsrede bei der ge-
meinsamen Sitzung von Bundestag und Bundesrat am 1. Juli 1999 in Bonn: 
"In der Politik geht es nicht um letzte Wahrheiten, sondern um richtige Lösungen. 
Der politische Streit sollte jeweils um die Frage gehen, welcher Vorschlag der beste 
ist im Interesse aller oder im Interesse der vielen. Nur dann kann etwas von dem auf-
scheinen, was Hannah Arendt in die Worte gefasst hat: 'Politik ist angewandte Liebe

Auch schon 1993 liebte er, diesen Satz zu zitieren, wie der Journalist Ulrich Rosenbaum 
in seinem 1993 bei Ullstein erschienenen und vergriffenen Buch Rudolf Scharping aus-
führte. In einer Passage über den Essener Sonderparteitag am 25. Juni 1993 schreibt er:

"Hertha Däubler-Gmelin und Johannes Rau sprechen zuerst. Rau, der Interimsvor-
sitzende seit dem Rücktritt von Engholm, mahnt an, daß die SPD 'Schutzmacht der 
kleinen Leute' bleiben müsse. 'Wir tun', sagt er, 'unsere Arbeit nicht um unserer Pro-
gramme willen und auch nicht um unserer Karrieren willen, sondern wir tun sie, weil 
wir den Alltag der Menschen zum Besseren verändern wollen.' Und er zitiert Hannah 
Arendt: 'Politik ist angewandte Liebe zur Welt.' Sicher eine Idealvorstellung, das 
Sonntagsbild von einem Politiker, aber auch bewußt als Meßlatte für den künftigen 
Parteichef gesetzt. Scharping sitzt auf dem Podium an seinem Platz in der zweiten 
Reihe, hört zu, arbeitet aber immer wieder an seinem Redemanuskript."
In der SPD kursiert inzwischen dieser Satz, so auf der Homepage der SPD-Frau Brigitte 
Hackl aus Köln-Delbrück:
'Der Reiz der Kommunalpolitik liegt für mich darin, Lösungen für Probleme zu su-
chen, die uns allen täglich begegnen. Die Soziologin Hannah Arendt hat einmal ge-
schrieben: 'Politik ist angewandte Liebe zur Welt.' Ich finde: Für Kommunalpo-
litik trifft dies in besonderem Maße zu. Denn hier geht es um das, wasin unserer un-
mittelbaren Nachbarschaft passiert." (www.treffpunkt-meilen.de/spdbv.html)
Inzwischen erfuhr dieser Satz eine ungeahnte christdemokratische Überhöhung am Tat-
ort Erfurt, als ein Schüler Lehrer, Mitschüler und anschließend sich selber erschossen 
hatte. Die Mainzer Bistumsnachrichten berichteten von der Rede des Ministerpräsiden-
ten Vogel:
„Das Verbrechen von Erfurt und die Reaktionen darauf haben auch gezeigt, <dass 
wir uns neu bewusst werden müssen, wie wichtig die Achtung vor der unveräußerli-
chen Würde eines jeden Menschen ist>. Nach christlichem Glauben sei der Mensch 
von Gott als sein Ebenbild geschaffen und mit einer einmaligen und unveräußerli-

gel. Er zitierte ein Wort von Hannah Arendt: 'Politik ist angewandte Nächsten-
liebe.'“

Und in seiner Dankrede bei der Verleihung der Ehrendoktorwürde der Catholic Universi-
ty of America erklärte er am 13.11.2002: 
„Here in the United States and in Germany we have politicians who align their acti-
ons with their Christian belief and Christian value system, or at least make the effort 
to do so. Hardly anyone has better identified the guideline for political action in ser-
vice of the people and future generations than Hannah Arendt: "Politics is applied 
Love of Thy Neighbor!" Her statement is provocative but to the point.“

Dass sich dieses angebliche Zitat als so "griffig" erwiesen hat, sowohl für politische Feier-
tagsreden als auch für Krisensituationen, liegt in seiner jede Genauigkeit und Differenzie-
rung negierenden Vereinheitlichung. Und es ist daher auch nicht verwunderlich, dass die 
Jüdin und Liebhaberin der klassischen griechischen Philosophie sich unversehens als 
Vertreterin der christlichen Nächstenliebe wiederfindet. Tatsächlich hat sich Hannah 
Arendt vehement gegen die Nächstenliebe als politische Kategorie gewehrt. Liebe "ver-
brennt" den Raum des Zwischen den Menschen, der trennt und verbindet und der gerade 
wegen dieser paradoxen Struktur der pluralen Verfasstheit der Menschen angemessen ist. 
Wenn sie dennoch ein von ihr geplantes und nicht realisiertes Buch über die politischen 
Theorien "Amor mundi" nennen wollte, so ist das im Sinne der antiken politischen Tradi-
tion gemeint, deren "Sinn" sie in der "Freiheit des Miteinanderredens" sah, wohingegen 
das Private als "idiotisch" erschien, weil ihm diese Vielfalt versagt war.

„Arme Hannah" oder Von der Banalität zur Hannahlität des Bö-
sen
Selten genug fragt der Zeitgenosse wirklich nach Hannah Arendt. In Rufweite sitzen die 
Tragikomiker von Schmitt bis Strauss und nach wie vor die Klassiker von Hobbes bis 
Kant. Dagegen steht der Sinn nach Arendt immer dann, wenn der Stabreim «Banalität 
des Bösen» angesagt ist. Der bitterböse Untertitel von «Eichmann in Jerusalem» lizen-
ziert philosophische Trivialaussagen über das Böse. Wenn Arendt auch sonst auf den Tep-
pichetagen von Macht, Reichtum und Wissenskunde nicht wirklich etwas zu sagen hat, 
mit ihrer «Hannahlität des Bösen» ist Arendt legendär. Neben Schillers Axt hat sie jeder-
mann im Haus, auch wenn er sich alles Weitere erspart oder entrümpelt hat. Das jüngste 
Beispiel macht die FAZ vom 3. Juni 2004.
«Das banale Böse 
Schockierend ist nicht wirklich die moralische Verruchtheit. Spätestens seit Hannah 
Arendt wissen wir, wie einfache Menschen zum Bösen geraten. Kriegszustände bieten im-
mer Rahmen, in denen normale Menschen zu Grausamkeiten bereit sind, die sie kaum als 
Grausamkeiten erkennen – Grund genug, den Krieg als allerletzte Handlungsmöglichkeit 
zu betrachten. Dieses Beispiel des banalen Bösen anhand einiger Soldaten dürfte uns also 
wenig überraschen, wohl aber die Mischung aus Arroganz und Dummheit, mit der die 
Bush-Regierung ihre Aufgaben anpackt.»
Dieses prächtige Exemplar von «Hannahlität» findet sich in Susan Neimans Artikel 
«Danke, Schröder!» einer hintergründigem Hymne auf Kanzler Schröder, vor allem aber 
auf dessen neues selbstbewusstes Deutschland. „Nicht wirklich“ schockiert zeigt sich Frau 
Neiman über jene «Bilder» aus Bagdad, die den neusten Wonnemonat lang den totalen

Thinktank- und Talkstoff geliefert  hatten. Im Denken des Bösen kennt sich Susan Nei-
mann, die Direktorin des Potsdamer Einstein Forums, von Berufs wegen eigentlich aus, 
lehrte sie doch Philosophie in Yale und an der Universität von Tel Aviv, und ist sie doch 
Mitglied der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Und – schrieb sie 
doch vor kurzem Das Böse denken. Eine andere Geschichte der Philosophie. Suhrkamp 
Verlag, Frankfurt am Main 2004 ISBN 3518583891.
Nach der zitierten FAZ-Stelle empfiehlt mir das gesunde Vorurteil das Buch von Nei-
man zum Nichtlesestoff des Jahres. Warum so böse? Einfach weil „Spätestens seit Han-
nah Arendt wissen wir, wie einfache Menschen zum Bösen geraten.“
