Biodiversity, tribal knowledge and life in India
Tribes are known for their close proximity with the nature all over the world. They use natural resources as part of their survival while protecting these as part of their duties and obligations. Thus the concept of nature-man–spirit is very ancient as both biological diversity and cultural diversity are directly related to the origin of many tribes in India who personify their origin from some plants and trees protecting them as sacred grooves. Research and Analysis of Digital Baseband Transmission System Based on MATLAB
This paper mainly studies the basic concept of baseband transmission of digital signal and the transmission processof digital signal baseband transmission and how to design digital baseband transmission system with MATLABsoftware simulation. This paper fi rst introduces the theoretical basis of this subject, including digital communication,the composition of digital baseband transmission system and digital baseband signal transmission process. Then thepaper introduced the characteristics of digital baseband transmission system, including digital PAM signal powerdensity and common line pattern, and by comparing choosing the fi nal bipolar zero return code. Then we introducedthe MATLAB simulation software. The conditions of the best reception of the digital baseband signal are describedand how the waveform of the baseband signal is observed by an oscilloscope. Finally, according to the basic stepsof simulation process, the simulation process of digital baseband transmission system is realized by MATLABsimulation tool, and the system is analyzed
Construction of New Genetically Engineered Vaccine Strain for O-type Foot-and-Mouth Disease of Pig
Foot-and-mouth disease is an acute and highly contagious viral infectious disease. Although the foot and mouthdisease vaccine has been applied in some parts of the world since the beginning of the 20th century, the currentepidemic of foot and mouth disease in the world is still serious and constitutes an obstacle to the trade of animal andanimal products in the world. The porcine pseudorabies virus gene deletion strain PRV TK-/ gE-/ LacZ +, which isconstructed by our laboratory, has the advantages of good safety, large capacity and high recombination effi ciency. Inthis study, the artifi cial O-type foot-and-mouth disease P1 gene as an antigen gene, UbiP1 fused with ubiquitin (Ub)as another antigen gene to enhance cellular immunity, and then shRNA designed for FMD 3B gene and porcine IFN-[gamma] with antiviral and immune-regulatory eff ects. The two functional genes were constructed in turn to constructa transfer vector with four functional genes. The transfer vector was transfected into TK-/ gE- / LacZ+ cells with PRVdeletion vector, and the plasmids were purifi ed and identifi ed. The recombinant pseudorabies virus, which containsthe six functional genes of P1 gene, UbiP1, shRNA and IFN-γ, was obtained, which laid the foundation for furtherconstruction of new genetically engineered vaccine
HDL therapies — past, present and future
For a number of years, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) has been recognized to have an athero-protective role by promoting reverse lipid transport, a process facilitating the cholesterol efflux from atherosclerotic plaques in the artery wall and its elimination by the liver via biliary excretion. On the contrary, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles carry cholesterol to the organs and tissues where it can be used to produce hormones or maintain cell metabolism. When an imbalance develops, as a result of either an excess level of cholesterol associated with LDL (LDL-C) or a less effective cholesterol elimination by HDL (HDL-C), this causes an excess of cholesterol to be transported to the tissues and promotes the deposition of cholesterol. This often occurs in the artery walls, particularly in the coronary arteries. There is no approved medical treatment for directly suppressing or treating the atherosclerotic plaque once it is formed. Epidemiological studies have shown that the risk of developing cardio-vascular disease (CVD) is higher in patients with low levels of HDL-C regardless of LDL-C levels, even in patients optimally treated with LDL-C-lowering therapies. These data highlight that low HDL-C and low HDL particle number is an important target of therapies aiming to reduce the residual risk of CVD
The variability of the sediment plume and ocean circulation features of the Nass River Estuary, British Columbia
The Nass River discharges into Nass Bay and Iceberg Bay, which are adjoining tidal inlets located within the northern inland waters of British Columbia, Canada. After the Skeena River, the Nass River is the second longest river within northern British Columbia, which discharges directly into Canadian waters of the Pacific Ocean. It is also supports one of the most productive salmon fisheries in northern British Columbia. The Nass River discharges into the eastern end of Nass Bay. Nass Bay, in turn feeds into Portland Canal and the fresh surface waters then flows westward to the Pacific Ocean via Dixon Entrance. The tides in Northern British Columbia are very large with a tidal height range of just over 7 m. Nass Bay is a shallow inlet of less than 10 km in length with typical water depths of than 10 m or less. The existing knowledge of oceanographic processes in Nass and Iceberg Bays was rudimentary until three years ago, when the first modern oceanographic measurements were obtained. In this study, the seasonal and tidal variability of the lateral extent of the Nass River surface plume is mapped from analyses of Landsat satellite data spanning the period from 2008 to 2015. A high resolution coupled three dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model was developed and implemented, within the widely used and accepted Delft3D modeling framework, which was forced and validated using recent 2013-2016 in-situ oceanographic measurements. The combined satellite and numerical modeling methods are used to study the physical oceanographic and sediment transport regime of Nass and Iceberg Bays and the adjoining waters of Portland Inlet and Observatory Inlet. The ocean circulation of Nass and Iceberg Bays was found to be dominated by tidal currents, and by the highly seasonal and variable Nass River freshwater discharges. Complex lateral spatial patterns in the tidal currents occur due to the opening of the southwestern side of Nass Bay onto the deeper adjoining waters of Iceberg Bay. Surface winds are limited to a secondary role in the circulation variability. The sediment dynamics of the Nass Bay system features a very prominent surface sediment plume present from the time of freshet in mid-spring through to large rainfall runoff events in the fall. The time-varying turbidity distribution and transport paths of the Nass River sediment discharges in the study area were characterized using the model results combined with an analysis of several high-resolution multi-year Landsat satellite data sets
The sea-ice detection capability of synthetic aperture radar
Climate change, increasing activities in areas like offshore oil and gas exploration, marine transport, eco-tourism, in additional to the usual activities of northerners resident are leading to reductions in sea ice. Therefore, there is an urgent need for improvement in the sea ice detection in polar areas. Starting from the mechanism of electromagnetic scattering, based on an empirical dielectric constant model, we apply EM multi-reflection and transmission formulas for coefficients between the air-ice interface and sea water-ice interface to develop a model for estimating the capability of detection of sea ice and ice thickness based on a pulse radar system, synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Although the dielectric constant of sea ice is less than that of sea water, this model can provide a rational methodology as the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) of sea ice is larger than that of sea water due to multiple reflections. The numerical simulations of this model showed that the convergence rate is rapid. With 3 or 4 reflections and transmissions (depending on temperature, salinity, and dielectric constants of sea ice and water), truncation errors can be satisfied using theoretical considerations and practical applications. The model is applied to estimate the capability of SAR to discriminate ice from water. The numerical results suggested that the model ability to measure ice thickness decreases with increasing radar incident angles and increases with increasing radar pulse width. Reflection and transmission coefficients decrease monotonically with ice thickness and are saturated for ice thicknesses above a certain critical value which depends on SAR incidence angle, frequency and dielectric constants of sea ice. The capability to detect ice thickness for given different bands of pulse radar widths can be estimated with this model
Application of multi-window maximum cross-correlation to the mediterranean sea circulation by using MODIS data
In a previous study an improved Maximum Cross-Correlation technique, called Multi-Window Maximum Cross-Correlation (MW-MCC), was proposed, and applied to noise-free synthetic images in order to show its potential and limits in oceanographic applications. In this work, instead, the application of MW-MCC to high resolution MODIS images, and its capability to provide useful and realistic results for ocean currents, is studied. When applied to real satellite images, the MW-MCC is subject to cloud cover and image quality problems. As a consequence the number of useful MODIS images is greatly reduced. However, for every MODIS image, multiple spec-tral bands are available, and it is possible to apply the MW-MCC algorithm to the same scene as many times as the number of these bands, increasing the possibility of finding valid current vectors. Moreover, the comparison among the results from different spectral bands allows to verify both the consistency of the computed current vectors and the validity of using a spectral band as a good tracer for the ocean circulation. Due to the lack of systematic current measurements in the area considered, it has been not possible to perform an ex-tensive error analysis of the MW-MCC results, although a case study of a comparison between HF radar measurements and MW-MCC data is shown. Moreover, some comparison between numerical ocean model simulations and MW-MCC results are also shown. The coherence of the resulting circulation flow, the high number of current vectors found, the agreement among different spectral bands, and conformity with the currents measured by the HF radars or simulated by hydrodynamic models show the validity of the technique
Alternative Reflections on Podkletnov's Gravity Experiments
In the 1990s Eugene Podkletnov published results of experiments which in his opinion proved the effect of gravity shielding. The present paper is concerned with the question, what results may be expected from such experiments on the basis of the "Alternative Reflections on Gravitation", (ARG). The results of these considerations are in excellent agreement with those experiments. There, however, appeared no gravity shielding, but the production of additional, highly focused repulsive forces. Such curious results can hardly be explained on the basis of classical gravitational theories, which deal with attractive forces and their strong decrease with distance
