Terracotas arquitectónicas del Santuario de La Encarnación (Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia)
Get PDFIn this paper a group of architectural terracottas discovered during excavations at the lberian Sanctuary in La Encarnación (Caravaca, Spain) are studied. The revetment plaques are decorated with a double row of palmettes and lotus-flowers placed back to back, and separated by a row of S-spirals. The inner edge has a cyma with a pattem of five lobed palmettes, each in a round topped frame by a band with scrolled terminals at the base ofthe palmette. The antefixes representing a young satyr's head with rufíled hair and maenad's head framed by a wreath of vine-leaves. A nebris is tied around his neck. This material is imponed from ltaly and it is dated in the 2nd century B.C.En este trabajo se analiza un conjunto de 61 placas arquitectónicas y 9 antefijas procedentes del santuario de La Encarnación (Caravaca. Murcia). Las placas presentan decoración en un doble registro con palmetas circunscritas en la parte superior y un doble friso de palmetas de siete pétalos alternando con flores de loto, opuesto por su base, y separado por una fila de espirales en horizontal. Las antefijas reproducen los bustos de sátiros y ménades. Se trata de un material importado que tiene en la Península Itálica sus paralelos más inmediatos. Se fechan en el siglo 11 a. C. y documentan un proceso de monumentalización precoz de un viejo santuario ibérico, impulsado seguramente por la propia Roma

Get PDFThe surprising finds at Aldaieta (Alava) and Buzaga (Navarre), that had revealed the presence - in the south of the Pyrenean range- of human comunities of - apparently- a strong military component and with elements of material civilization referring without doubt to a world with north-pirenean influences, have made the author wonder about the credibility of the famous and controversial text -that of Pseudo-Fredegario- which talked about a Cispyrenean enclave that paid taxes to the Merovingians Kings at around the end of the sixth century and/or beginning of the seventh century. A careful examination of the subject makes the author think that, in the light of the mentioned archaeological finds, wich in the said text war more schocking and gaudy bccomes now less incongruent or improbable, and that other set of onomast ical and textual hints, that were before left out due to the lack of hermeneutical references minimally acccptable, becomcs nowadays, in the light of these same finds, of a new intcrpretative dimension. enigmatic and upsetingLos sorprendentes hallazgos de Aldaieta (Álava) y Buzaga (Navarra), que han revelado la presencia -al Sur de la cadena pirenaica- de comunidades humanas de -al parecer- fuerte componente militar y con elementos de civilización material a referir inequívocamente a un mundo de influencias norpirenaico (del área aquitano-novempopulana, más concretamente), han hecho que el autor vuelva a preguntarse sobre la credibilidad de un célebre y discutido texto - el del Pseudo-Fredegario-, que hablaba de un enclave cispirenaico que pagaba tributos a los reyes francos allá por los finales del siglo VI y/o comienzos del VII. Un detenido examen de la cuestión lleva al autor a pensar que, a la luz de los referidos hallazgos de orden arqueológico, lo que en dicho pasaje resultaba de más chocante y llamativo se vuelve ahora menos incongruente o inverosímil, y que otra serie de indicios de naturaleza textual y onomástica, que antes venían siendo preteridos a falta de referentes hermenéuticos mínimamente aceptables, cobran hoy, a la luz de esos mismos hallazgos, una nueva dimensión interpretativa, enigmática y turbadora

Get PDFThe analytical study of a number of samples of Roman mural painting from Mérida strongly suggest that the painting material used was composed of a mixture of pigments and calcite, and bound by an emulsion of beeswax and potassium soap. These ingredients were also identified in other samples of Greco-Roman mural painting from Marsala and Complutum. Examination of Greek and Latin texts about painting appear to confirm that both the composition and the characteristics of the wax-and-soap emulsion detected are those of Greco-Roman encaustique technique, the precise formula of which has not yet been determined and is still the subject of debateLos resultados obtenidos en el estudio analítico de algunas muestras de pintura mural romanas procedentes de Mérida parecen indicar que la materia pictórica empleada estaba compuesta por una mezcla de pigmentos y calcita aglutinados por una emulsión de cera de abejas y jabón potásico. Similares componentes fueron detectados también en otras muestras de pintura mural romana de Marsala y Complutum analizadas en este estudio. El examen de los textos griegos y latinos sobre pintura parece confirmar que tanto la composición como las características de la emulsión detectada corresponden a las de la técnica grecorromana de la encáustica, cuya composición exacta no ha sido detectada hasta la fecha y continúa siendo objeto de debate

The finding in Alava and Navarre of two necropolis of the Vlth and Vllth centuries, with a worth mentioning number of weapons and with funerary rituals and offerings that re fer not to a H ispanic-Wisigothic cultural context but to a north Pyrennean one ( of the Aquitainne area to be exact), allows to open a discussion to restate the actual historiographic interpretations for this period.Este artículo constituye un breve avance de las investigaciones que, desde hace algunos años, viene efectuando el autor sobre la época tardoantigua en el área de los Pirineos más occidentales. El descubrimiento en tierras alavesas y navarras de dos necrópolis de los siglos VI y VII, con un número de armas digno de mención y con rituales, depósitos y ajuares funerarios que nos remiten no a un contexto cultural hispanovisigodo sino al norte de los Pirineos, permite abrir un debate que replantee las interpretaciones historiográficas actuales para este período

Get PDFThe present article examines some examples of relevant mosaics founded in archaeological context of Late Roman Spain (IV-V A. D.) and investigates their validity as «source for the Late Roman History». Recent research and interpretations of them claim their meaning as a proof of religious commitments for their owners ore ven ownership of the villae in which were found. The proposal is that they have been overinterpreted and that it is necessary to be very cautious in its study taking into account the historical background of mosaic production of the Late Roman period.El presente artículo examina algunos ejemplos de mosaicos relevantes hallados en contextos arqueológicos de la Hispania tardorromana (IV-V d. C.) e investiga su validez como «fuente para la Historia tardorromana». Recientes investigaciones e interpretaciones han pretendido verlos como una prueba de religiosidad de los propietarios de las villae en las que fueron encontrados. Mi propuesta es que han sido «superinterpretados» y que es necesario ser muy cautos cuando se realizan dichos estudios, teniendo en cuenta el contexto histórico de la producción musiva del periodo tardorromano

Las villae romanas no son monasterios
Get PDFA review of the recently published on the mosaics of the late Roman villa of the site «La Malena» (Azuara. Zaragoza. Spain) (cfr. JRA. 5. 1992. 162-177 and ibid. 148-161). A radically different interpretation is proposed here, i.e., the villa is a roman villa and not a «pagan monastery» (as mantained in JRA). On the other hand, the mosaic-identify as the representation of Cadmo and Armonia, is probably the abstract personification of «The Mariage».Una revisión del artículo recientemente publicado sobre el mosaico de la villa tardoromana de «La Malena» (Azuara, Zaragoza, España) (cfr. JRA, 5, 1992, pp. 162-177 e ibid. l 48-161). Se propone una interpretación completamente diferente: la villa es una villa rumana y no un «monasterio pagano» (como se mantiene en JRA): y el mosaico probablemente no representa a Cadmo y Armonía, sino la personificación probable de «El Matrimonio»
