El Templum Divi Claudii. Decoración y elementos arquitectónicos para su reconstrucción

    Get PDF
To date, little data of the Templum Divi Claudii has been available. It was dedicated by Agrippina to her deified dead husband. Nothing but a schematic drawing of the FUR of the temple, done in the 16th century, as well as a few fragments of the same marble floor, belonging to the temenos. However, thanks to the discovery of some decorative architectural elements of the temple, we can finally make a volumetric reconstruction of the monument and find out how its construction fully followed the gigantic architectural tradition started by Augustus with the temple of Mars Ultor. Its measurements, virtually identical to those of this temple, also offer the possibility of linking the emperors Claudius and Vespasian, the restorer of the Claudianum, to Augustus.

Circular basins are very common functional and decorative elements in the Roman world, where they were referred to as labra. Rectangular basins have been often included within this category, but it is preferable to use the term alvei for them. Spanish historiography has not paid much attention to these elements, which is due more to a problem of publication than to an absence of these elements in the archaeological record. Sometimes, the terminological confusion has led to the identification of the fountains not by the architectural or sculptural elements from which the water spouted but by the space where they were placed. The historiography review and the reassessment of the archaeological records of the labra documented in the Iberian Peninsula, both in public and private spaces, has made it possible to analyze their origin, typology, function and material, as well as their archaeological context. Made of different varieties of both local and imported marmora, the fountain basins, in different sizes and morphologies, are usually linked to the roman baths to atriums and peristyles.

In this work we introduce the sarcophagus lid found at the site of Carranque (Toledo) in the year 2009. The very wellpreserved piece was reused as part of the cover of one of the tombs that was part of the Visigothic necropolis installed during the seventh century over the Late Roman Palatium of Carranque. The front of the sarcophagus lid is decorated with three scenes taken from the cycle of the prophet Jonah. The Petrological analysis made in the ICAC confirm that the marble used is Estremoz marble (Portugal) and that we are therefore dealing with a piece made by a Hispanic sculptural workshop of excellent quality which was active in the final decades of the fourth century A.D.En el presente trabajo se da a conocer la tapa de sarcófago hallada en el yacimiento de Carranque (Toledo) en la campaña de 2009.

This article focuses on a specific aspect of the work of G.B. Piranesi: the knowledge of the technical engineering elements linked to the Venetian author’s education. His entire works have been studied in order to find the greatest number of references to help to understand Roman building technology filtered by the original shape of the designs on the illustrations. In this sense, several groups of graphic representations have been identified allowing us to establish a connection with the world of construction which is evident in all of the illustrations that deal with older buildings. Our goal is to reevaluate the details in the works of Piranesi which try to penetrate in the anatomy of Roman structures aiming to learn and show «how» they were built.

Archaeological research in the Roman city of Pollentia (Alcúdia, Mallorca) began in 1923 with the excavations of G. Llabrés and R. Isasi. From 1923 to 1946, their fieldwork affected large areas of the city and important remains were uncovered. In this article, the results of the revision of old documents from these excavations are presented. In short, this work has allowed the reconstruction of the fieldwork campaigns, particularly those carried out between 1942 and 1946, and also their location in the general plan of the site. All together this represents a remarkable advance in the knowledge of the topography in this provincial Roman city.

S. I a. C.- s. II d. C.

The urban development of the central public area of the Roman city of Termes (Hispania Citerior) between the 1st century B.C and the 2nd century A.D. is linked to the progressive institutional transformation of the community and to its social and economic development. After the Bellum Sertorianum, the urban space previously occupied by the Celtiberian oppidum was used as a shrine related to one of the founding rites of the city, and which would become the origin of the forum. This area was refurbished during the Augustan era (31 B.C. – 14 A.D.), when a temple was built that overlooked a communal area, although we are not aware of its general layout due to the progressive overlapping of structures in the zone. During the reign of Julius Claudius (14-37 A.D.), a new public area was created, next to the earlier one, which was made up by an arched complex with a temple. This complex was part of a main public area, which was either a Julius Claudius Forum or just an urban sanctuary. Finally, during the Flavian era, from 75 A.D, the site of the Augustan forum would be transformed with the construction of a large scenographic and monumental agora, the Flavian Forum, a complex that would be both a forum and an Augusteum, a place for performances and a shrine for dynastic worship. I a. C. y el s. II d.

We report preliminary results from research into a new fortified settlement located close to the western coast in the current province of Almería in the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. An analysis is made of the fortification system, consisting of a casemate walls, and of the archaeological materials collected at the surface, offering a chronology of the site between the second half of the 6th century B.C. to the end of the 5th or early 4th century B.C. The function proposed for the site is that of a strategic control of metal and agricultural resources by the ancient Phoenician city of Abdera.

    Get PDF
New archaeometric data on the fragments of the rod tripod of Cypriote type found at the site of La Clota (Calaceite) enable the reassessment of this artefact from a new perspective. The most important results emerging from this work are related to the method of manufacture by lost-wax casting, to the fact that it is a ternary alloy and, above all, the fact that the lead used came from the Iberian Peninsula. These new data, together with those already known about the influence of the Cypriot-Levantineinfluenced bronze-work in the central and western Mediterranean, indicate that the piece is of local manufacture and lead to a discussion of this type of object as a whole.
