Psychobiological Stress Regulation Through Group Music Therapy in Depressive Women

    No full text
Abstract Background. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is known as a stress-related disease which affects women more often than men. Music therapy (MT) has been shown to be effective in the treatment of MDD. However, clinical trials investigating the effects of MT on psychological and psychobiological stress-related outcomes in women suffering from MDD are still scarce. Methods. This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial, with participants assigned to either an intervention group (IG), which received group MT (GMT), or a waitlist control group (CG) which received GMT 6 months later. The primary objective was to assess the impact of GMT on psychological stress outcomes (chronic stress, stress coping, and stress experienced in daily life) and psychobiological stress markers (diurnal salivary cortisol levels and circadian heart rate variability), considering the effects of both group allocation and time. Outcome measurements were taken before, immediately after, and for some variables, 10 weeks following the intervention period. Results. A total of 102 women between 18 and 65 years diagnosed with current MDD took part in the study. Overall, the IG demonstrated more substantial stress-reducing effects compared to the CG. Significant improvements were observed in general stress coping, positive thinking, daily life stress, and cortisol. Conclusion. GMT is a cost-effective and non-invasive approach to effectively address the stress-related psychological and psychobiological burden associated with MDD. To demonstrate long-term effects and gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms, further methodologically robust studies are needed

Soft X-ray tomography reveals variations in B.subtilis biofilm structure upon tasA deletion [Data]

    No full text
Bacterial biofilms are complex communities of cells within a self-produced extracellular matrix. They play crucial roles in healthcare, nutrition, agriculture and environmental research, yet an analysis of their elaborate 3D architecture remains challenging. In our work, we developed a “biofilm-in-capillary” growth method compatible with full-rotation soft X-ray tomography, providing high-resolution 3D imaging of bacterial cells and their surrounding extracellular matrix during biofilm formation, without drying or fixation steps. These datasets are reconstructed 3D volumes obtained by soft X-ray tomography of WT and ΔtasA mutants, including rescue with TasA protein. The data is organized in individual *.tif files with prefixes as follows: for single-cell suspension WT "Diehl_Biofilm_Bacillus_subtilis_WT_GFP_0h_10797"; for single-cell suspension ΔtasA mutants "Diehl_Biofilm_Bacillus_subtilis_tasA_GFP_0h_10801_"; for WT biofilm formed after 22h "Diehl_Biofilm_Bacillus_subtilis_WT_GFP_10479";for ΔtasA biofilm formed after 22h "Diehl_Biofilm_Bacillus_subtilis_tasA_GFP_10517";for ΔtasA biofilm formed after 44h "Diehl_Biofilm_Bacillus_subtilis_tasA_GFP_ctrl_44h_10815";for ΔtasA biofilm with the addition of TasA protein formed after 44h "Diehl_Biofilm_Bacillus_subtilis_tasA_GFP_rescue_44h_10821"</ul

Natural abiotic iron-mediated formation of C1 and C2 compounds from environmentally important methyl-substituted substrates and their implication for nature (Digital Appendix)

    No full text
Organic and inorganic compounds with one or two carbon atoms (C1 and C2) are continuously produced through natural processes, including methane, ethane, methanol, formaldehyde, methyl chloride, and carbon dioxide. These compounds act as greenhouse gases, control the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere, and play an important role in atmospheric chemistry and physics. A recent study has provided compelling evidence for the oxic and abiotic formation of C1 and C2 compounds through the cleavage of methyl groups from environmentally relevant organic substrates with sulfur-, nitrogen-, phosphorus-, and oxygen-bonded methyl groups using iron-oxo species. The results show that these processes are a significant source of C1 and C2 compounds, influencing the global carbon cycle. In particular, the demethoxylation of lignin monomers and other aromatic methoxy compounds is an important process occurring in natural environments such as soil. This discovery highlights the importance of abiotic processes for the production of C1 and C2 compounds and their impact on the chemical and physical properties of natural environments

Exploring Gender differences with Natural Language Processing: Language Characteristics of male and female patients in psychodynamic psychotherapy [data]

    No full text
This dataset contains the R code for the analysis and results of the study "Exploring Gender differences with Natural Language Processing: Language characteristics of male and female patients in psychodynamic psychotherapy". Furthermore, it contains the transcription rules. Introduction: To improve psychotherapeutic treatment, gender differences regarding psychological processes in psychotherapy need to be understood. As language is the basis for communication and the relationship between patient and psychotherapist, the impact of gender on psychotherapeutic treatment can be investigated through the analysis of language patterns of male and female patients in psychotherapy sessions. Methods: For this retrospective, exploratory study 250 psychotherapy sessions of 125 patients treated at a psychodynamic psychotherapy institute were verbatim transcribed. The psychodynamic psychotherapies took place at the Heidelberg Institute for Psychotherapy (HIP). Using computational methods of Natural Language Processing, different language parameters were extracted from these transcripts and language differences between male and female patients were analysed. Results: We were able to identify several gender differences: Male patients showed a higher lexical verbosity, used longer words and more nouns and adjectives than female patients. Moreover, in sessions with male patients, interruptions occurred more often. In comparison, female patients spoke words that refer to their mother more often and also used terms of endearment to talk about their parents. Additionally, they used personal pronouns and first-person plural pronouns more frequently than male patients. No significant gender difference was found for word count, simultaneous speaking and insertions. Discussion: Our study demonstrated that gender impacts language patterns in psychodynamic psychotherapy. Male patients use a more complex, formal and directive language, while the language of female patients indicates more emotional proximity, especially in relationships. Our results serve as a first account of gender-specific language characteristics in psychotherapy
