From imitation to collusion: a replication [Dataset]
In oligopoly, imitating the most successful competitor yields very competitive outcomes. This theoretical prediction has been confirmed experimentally by a number of studies. A recent paper by Friedman et al. (J Econ Theory 155:185–205, 2015) qualifies those results in an interesting way: While they replicate the very competitive results for the first 25–50 periods, they show that when using a much longer time horizon of 1200 periods, results slowly turn to more and more collusive outcomes. We replicate their result for duopolies. However, with 4 firms, none of our oligopolies becomes permanently collusive. Instead, the average quantity always stays above the Cournot–Nash equilibrium quantity. Thus, it seems that ‘‘four remain many’’ even with 1200 periods
Risk taking by agents: The role of ex-ante and ex-post accountability [Dataset]
We study the role of accountability in situations where an agent makes risky decisions for a principal. We observe that in the absence of accountability, agents choose less risk averse investments for the principal than investors who invest for their own account. Accountability mitigates the observed decrease in risk aversion. Differences are observed between situations where agents are accountable for their decision ("ex-ante") and where they are accountable for the outcome ("ex-post")
Vinča-Belo Brdo, Serbia: The times of a tell [Dataset]
A new radiocarbon dating programme for the sequence excavated by M. Vasić at the Neolithic site Vinča-Belo Brdo, Serbia, was designed within the framework of Bayesian chronological modeling. A total of 85 radiocarbon measurements are now available from 82 samples from known depths through the sequence at Vinča. The supplementary information provided here – Vinca_Vasic_age_depth_final.oxcal – presents the CQL2 code explicitly defining the age depth model
Catastrophic Risk: Social Influences on Insurance Decisions [Dataset]
We study behavioral patterns of insurance demand for low-probability large-loss events (catastrophic losses). Individual patterns of belief formation and risk attitude that were suggested in the behavioral decisions literature emerge robustly in the current set of insurance choices. However, social comparison effects are less robust. We do not find any evidence for peer effects (through social loss aversion or imitation) on insurance take-up. In contrast, we find support for the prediction that people underweight others’ relevant information in their own decision making
SPDM data capturing radiation induced chromatin conformation changes
Using stably transfected HeLa cells expressing either green fluorescent protein (GFP) labelled histone H2B or yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) labelled histone H2A, we investigated the positioning of individual histone proteins in cell nuclei by means of high resolution localization microscopy (Spectral Position Determination Microscopy = SPDM). The cells were exposed to ionizing radiation of different doses and aliquots were fixed after different repair times for SPDM imaging. In addition to
the repair dependent histone protein pattern, the positioning of antibodies specific for heterochromatin and euchromatin was recorded by SPDM.
Experimental data was acquired in the Experimental Biophysics group by Michael Hausmann, Patrick Müller, Sabina Hillebrandt, Margund Bach and Rainer Kaufmann. Kernel Density Estimations of the experimental data and the maskings of the regions of interest based on the KDEs were calculated by Yang Zhang, a member of the Statistical Physics and Theoretical Biophysics Group.</p
Seal of the University of Heidelberg - Siegel UAH SG 11
Capturing the Heidelberg University's sealings with a 3D-scanner provides new visualizations and virtual restoration possibilities for the partially preserved damaged objects. High-resolution 3D-models are analyzed due to their surface features, which cannot be documented with photography
The gender wage gap in experimental labor markets [Dataset]
We analyze the gender wage gap in experimental markets. Women receive but do not request significantly lower wages than men. This hurts firms, as women react with low effort. Additionally, women tend to react differently than men to wage levels
Reciprocity in Labor Market Relationships: Evidence from an Experiment Across High-Income OECD Countries [Dataset]
We study reciprocity in the labor market context. To this end, we conducted a bilateral gift exchange experiment comparing behavior of subjects from five high-income OECD countries, among them two liberal market economies (USA and Israel), two coordinated market economies (Germany and Japan) and a Mediterranean economy (Spain). We conjecture a higher wage dispersion, higher rejection rate and lower effort (per wage offer), and a higher income inequality in liberal than in coordinated market economies. We observe that all subject pools demonstrate increasing
effort levels and decreasing rejection rates in wage offers. We also find considerable differences between subject pools in both one-shot and repeated relationships. The most striking difference in behavior are not between subjects from liberal and coordinated market economies, but rather between the subjects of two European countries, Germany and Spain
Schlagzeile geht schneller als Recherche – über die journalistische Arbeit zum Antikenraub [Video- und Audiomaterial]
Three video files and one audio file documenting TV and radio features, which were broadcasted in 2014 and 2015. They are mentioned in a summarizing academic article about the looting of antiquities and the trade with them, and about the difficulties of serious journalism on this topic
