Sex Differences in Profile and In-Hospital Death for Acute Stroke in Chile: Data From a Nationwide Hospital Registry
Background: Knowledge of local contextual sex differences in the profile and outcome for stroke can improve service delivery. We aimed to determine sex differences in the profile of patients with acute stroke and their associations with in-hospital death in the national hospital database of Chile.
Methods and results: We present a retrospective cohort based on the analysis of the 2019 Chilean database of Diagnosis-Related Groups, which represents 70% of the operational expenditure of the public health system. Random-effects multiple logistic regression models were used to determine independent associations of acute stroke (defined by main diagnosis International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision [ICD-10] codes) and in-hospital death, and reported with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. Of 1 048 575 hospital discharges, 15 535 were for patients with acute stroke (7074 [45.5%] in women), and 2438 (15.6%) of them died during hospitalization. Differences by sex in sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were identified for stroke and main subtypes. After fully adjusted model, women with ischemic stroke had lower in-hospital death (OR, 0.79 [95% CI, 0.69-0.91]) compared with men; other independent predictors included age per year increase (OR, 1.03 [95% CI, 1.03-1.04]), chronic kidney disease (OR, 1.47 [95% CI, 1.20-1.80]), atrial fibrillation (OR, 1.50 [95% CI, 1.26-1.80]), and other risk factors. Conversely, for intracerebral hemorrhage, women had a higher in-hospital mortality rate than men (OR, 1.19 [95% CI, 1.02-1.40]); other independent predictors included age per year increase (OR, 1.009 [95% CI, 1.003-1.01]), chronic kidney disease (OR, 1.55 [95% CI, 1.23-1.97]), oral anticoagulant use (OR, 1.88 [95% CI, 1.37-2.58]), and other risk factors.
Conclusions: Sex differences in characteristics and in-hospital death of hospitalized patients exist for acute stroke in Chile. In-hospital death is higher for acute ischemic stroke in men and higher for intracerebral hemorrhage in women. Future research is needed to better identify contributing factors.Versión Publicad
Attitudes towards migration in a COVID-19 context: testing a behavioral immune system hypothesis with Twitter data
The COVID-19 outbreak implied many changes in the daily life of most of the world’s population for a long time, prompting severe restrictions on sociality. The Behavioral ImmuneSystem (BIS) suggests that when facing pathogens, a psychological mechanism would be activated that, among other things, would generate an increase in prejudice and discrimination towards marginalized groups, including immigrants. This study aimed to test if people tend to enhance their rejection of minorities and foreign groups under the threat of contagious diseases, using the users’ attitudes towards migrants in Twitter data from Chile, for pre-pandemic and pandemic contexts. Our results appear to be mostly against the BIS hypothesis, with some faint exceptions, since threatened users increased their tweet production in the pandemic period, compared to empathetic users, but the latter grew in number and also increased the reach of their tweets between the two periods. We also found differences in the use of language between these types of users. Alternative explanations for these results may be context-dependent.Versión publicad
Cognitive motivational variables and dropout intention as precursors of university dropout
Introduction: The intention to dropout and dropout is a problem still unresolved in higher education institutions.
Objective: To estimate the differences in the levels of engagement, motivation and academic satisfaction according to (a) intention to dropout and (b) students
who remained with those who dropped out. Method: non-experimental designs were used. Two studies are reported, study 1 involved 3,256 students and study 2 involved 2,110 students. The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale Student Test, the Academic Self-Regulation Scale and the Academic Satisfaction Scale were used. The intention to dropout was measured with 3 items and the final dropout data was taken from the official register of students who dropped out of university.
Results: There are significant differences in the levels of engagement, autonomous motivation and satisfaction between the students who remained
and those who dropped out of the university.
Discussion: Students who dropped out in the 3rd semester presented lower levels of academic engagement, motivation and academic satisfaction than
those who remained. The intention to dropout and lower levels of these cognitive-motivational variables may contribute to the identification of students
at high risk of dropping out. These results contribute to unveiling key variables for the educational transformation of Higher Education in the 21st century.

Masa madre: criando solas, horneando juntas
Firm heterogeneity and innovation strategy decisions
Research on innovation strategy has focused on dichotomic (yes or no) options and the determinants of technological (product and process) innovations. This paper includes a variety of innovation strategies
to extend the Crepon–Duguet–Mairesse model suggested by Cr´epon et al. (1998). We extend the study of innovation strategy to nontechnological innovations (organizational and marketing), encompassing
all possible combinations of innovative alternatives for the firm (16 strategies). Furthermore, we use a panel of four waves (2009–2010, 2011–2012, 2013–2014, and 2015–2016) of the Chilean innovation
survey, which allows us to consider endogeneity using a fixed-effect multinomial logit model. Our results show the relevance of R&D spending per employee in all innovation strategies. Skilled employees
positively affect organizational innovation strategies, and medium and large firms are more likely to choose strategies involving process and organizational innovation. The choice of innovation strategy is
relevant to a firm’s productivity. The coefficient increases monotonically from simple to semi-complex to complex strategies, all of which are positive and statistically significant. This study’s results seem
more plausible than those found in previous literature.Versión publicad
Children's perceptions of their participation rights context when living in residential care and its relationship with their subjective well-being
Background: Participation rights of children in residential care have not been frequently explored despite the positive effects of participation on their subjective well-being (SWB).
Objective: To explore the relationship of six rights-related perceptions with the SWB of children and adolescents in residential care.
Participants and setting: N = 268, 9–19-year-olds living in residential care.
Methods: Five rights-related perceptions were analysed according to scores in two cognitive and two affective SWB scales, through descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis.
Results: The more children feel adults at home and at school listen to them and take their say into account, the more they feel they are treated fairly by these adults, and the more they perceive adults in general in their country respect children’s rights, the higher are their observed SWB scores. The majority rights-related perceptions showed significant effects on positive SWB indicators. However, only they believe that adults in general in their country respect children’s
rights displayed effects on Negative Affect. Girls’ SWB showed lower scores than boys’, and girls’ rights-related perceptions displayed more effects on their SWB than boys’.
Conclusions: There are important percentages of children in residential care who do not feel they are able to participate in aspects of their own lives that directly affect them and their SWB.
Children in residential care display lower scores in all the positive measures, especially girls and exceptionally higher scores in the negative affect than the overall Chilean children’s population.Versión publicad
“How it is said”: Analyses of WhatsApp communications in a postpartum depression preventive intervention
Introduction: “m-What Were We Thinking” (m-WWWT) is an m-health, intervention oriented to prevent symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety in first-time mothers. Mothers receive psychoeducation and socioemotional support through written communication via text-messaging (i.e., WhatsApp) with the program counsellor. Although the use of m-health interventions targeting mental health has increased, the form/style of communication through text messages between participants and program counsellors has been understudied. Objective: The aim was to describe the formal structure of the communication (Basic Forms) and the communicational intentions (Communicative Intentions) used in the messages sent by the counsellor and to determine if these are related to the post-intervention outcomes. Methods: 438 text messages sent by the counsellor to 53 first-time mothers (M = 25.32 years, SD = 4.23) who participated in the m-WWWT intervention were analyzed. The Therapeutic Activity Coding System was used to capture the communication as a “Communicative Action”. Results: The study highlighted the counsellor's frequent use of the “assertion” communicative form (82%) and attuned communicative intentions (52%) and explored (39%) in her messages. The attractors of communication were “assert to attune” and “assert to explore”, indicating an empathetic and informative communication style. With respect to their relationship with the intervention outcome, only “assert to explore” messages were positively related to maternal self-efficacy increases. The number of messages was not associated with participants’ characteristics at baseline, except for educational level. Discussion: Our results show the relevance of combining the delivery of information with a communication style that allows the counsellor to connect with the specific needs and emotional tone of the participants.Versión publicad
