On the Decriminalization of Assisting Suicide in Austria
Get PDF3700Section 78 of the Criminal Code of Austria made the act of “assisting suicide” a criminal offense. In December 2020, however, the Constitutional Court of the Catholic country vacated the provision because it violated one’s right to self-determination, which includes the right to seek help from a third party in terminating one’s own life. This paper aims to examine the background and ramifications of this shift.
First, I review Death in Dignity published by the Austrian Bioethics Commission in 2015. Then I explore the influences from neighboring countries. In Germany, for example, the Federal Constitutional Court struck down a law criminalizing repeated assistance in suicide in February 2020 for the same reason as its Austrian counterpart. Finally, I compare Austria which still prohibits euthanasia, with Canada which legalized both assisted suicide and euthanasia all at once as medical aid in dying.departmental bulletin pape
eSports research needed in Japan: Consideration by literature review
Get PDF3813This study has two purposes in order to clarify the future needs of eSports research in Japan.
1.Review domestic and international eSports research and to organize and understand the research themes.
2.Discuss what kind of research is needed in Japan in the future.
First, domestic research and social trends in eSports were collated with overseas research. As a result, three research themes were identified: "Is eSports a sport?" "Will eSports grow as a business and industry?" and "Is eSports useful for education?
The three research themes were identified using a systematic review. As a result, a total of 23 references were reviewed.
Finally, the literature on each theme was reviewed. It became clear that "Research on the definition of e-sports" "Research on the handling of e-sports as a new sport" was necessary. In addition, more research is needed on "The motivation to watch and participate in popular e-sports events in Japan". It is also necessary to research "The educational effects of e-sports events that are popular in Japan, mainly individual competitions".departmental bulletin pape
Consideration of the Nutritional Value and Palatability of Insects
Get PDF76,3814,3815,3693Since the 2013 FAO report on the usefulness of insects as foodstuffs, the insect business has become active in various countries of the world. We thought the breeding of insects to be possible for an elderly person with low physical strength in comparison with raising domestic animals such as cows. We also thought the culture of insects might lead to the foundation and regional activation of job opportunities for the socially vulnerable.
Therefore, we performed ingredient nourishment analysis on three kinds of insects to examine their usefulness.
Additionally, we made two kinds of cake using locusts and performed a sensory test.
As a result of the ingredient nourishment analysis, we found that protein, zinc, and copper were present in rich amounts.
The sensory test items were: taste, smell, texture, aftertaste, appearance, and a global assessment. All items in the sensory evaluation scored higher than average.
As a result of this investigation, it was suggested that insects were promising as foodstuffs.
In addition, the possibility that the culture of insects could lead to the employment of the socially vulnerable was shown.departmental bulletin pape
Inclusive Qualification System in Upper Secondary Education: −NCEA reform in New Zealand
Get PDF608Attainment rates of national qualifications in the upper secondary schools have risen steadily and significantly in New Zealand since the introduction of NCEA, or National Certificate of Educational Achievement, in 2002. This paper aims to analyse how New Zealand has developed the inclusive nature of the qualification system. It also reviews the reform process since 2017, to address such issues of excessive assessments, teacher workloads, student wellbeing and declining academic achievements.
The paper identifies the ‘parity of esteem’ principle, scholarship awards, and internal assessments that continue to be the crucial elements of the inclusive system. However, it argues that while the numerical target from the government and the league tables created by the media have helped to raise the attainment rates, they also work to maintain the disparity in capabilities.departmental bulletin pape
An Economic English Class using Content-Based Instruction

The following lesson plan will teach English using Content-Based Instruction（CBI）in an economics class taught at a Japanese university. The class will introduce the concept of opportunity cost using English. CBI requires instructors to be rather engaged in preparing such classes. CBI also acknowledges the stress put on the students who are required to process two unknowns: the content and the L2. The instructor is responsible for bringing together content and L2 learning simultaneously. The lesson plan submitted here is the outcome of a course in CBI. The course had certain strict criteria for the lesson as well as for the students’ well-being. It is the hope of the authors to present a realistic CBI lesson plan that engages students to learn not only the L2, but a subject which they are able to converse in using the target L2.departmental bulletin pape

It is an international language officially published for the first time in 1887 by a young ophthalmologist, Ludwik Lazaro Zamenhof. The author also discusses the strong points and weak points of Esperanto as an internationally neutral language. In the second part, the author’s essay Vivaĵa Kunvivado Kaj Homeca Kunvivado is presented both in Esperanto and Japanese. It was originally published in Esperanto. In the essay, he insists that there are two kinds of coexistence: the coexistence of living creatures and the coexistence of humans. To achieve this purpose, the researchers undertook historical research on the policy, made a philosophical analysis of childcare support as part of the professional responsibilities of nursery school teachers, and conducted a questionnaire survey on students intending to be nursery teachers.
As a result of this review, the following was evident. First, childcare support as part of the professional duty of nursery school teachers has become more important with the declining birthrate. Effort to Learn, Results and Satisfaction in a College Ski Program
Get PDF3799,3800The purpose of this study is to examine the effort to learn, learning effect and satisfaction in a college ski program. The following result were obtained.
1）The students who made great efforts were significantly higher than the other in all questionnaire items of effort. 2）The high-achieving group scored significantly higher than the others at all questionnaire items on learning effect. 3）The satisfied group were significantly higher than the others in all questions on satisfaction. The result showed that most participants make a great effort and gain a positive learning effect in skiing knowledge and skills. Furthermore, they were satisfied with not only the practical program but also the environment. The Effectiveness of Deep Breathing for Stress Management in University Students
Get PDF3738,3739In this era of rapid globalization, the use of smartphones and social networking services has triggered various forms of stress in young people, which could have a negative impact on their physical and mental health.
This study seeks to provide educational support for the health of university students, by examining the potential of deep breathing for stress management, which can be easily performed by anyone during university lectures.
The subjects included 12 third-year university students（4 males and 8 females; mean age 20.3±0.45 years）. The lecture content was not structured for stress management education.
Deep breathing was performed during 14 lectures, from the 2nd to the 15th class. Subsequently, in the 2nd, 7th and 15th lectures, a questionnaire was conducted to evaluate mood before and after deep breathing, using the Twodimensional Mood Scale Short Term（TDMS-ST）. The subjects were also asked to freely express their ‘current mood and feelings’.
Consequently, the study found that deep breathing promoted subjective mood effect in participants, especially a pleasant mood effect, and increased relaxation. Conversely, there was no change in unpleasant moods before and after deep breathing, suggesting that a few minutes of deep breathing had no significant effect on unpleasant moods.
These results suggest that deep breathing can serve as an effective way to increase pleasant moods in university students, and can be considered as one of the most effective techniques for addressing the various forms of stress that students face.departmental bulletin pape
