    Get PDF
This study delves into elementary school teachers’ evaluation of children’s books featuring Indonesian national heroes. Despite the significant roles of historical figures picturebooks, research on how teachers incorporate it as useful resources in teaching is limited. In fact, the availability of quality historical fiction picturebooks that portray stories of national heroes in Indonesia is also scarce. Through snowballing technique, 25 teachers voluntarily participated. Through an online questionnaire, they were asked to provide their opinion about three Indonesian hero storybooks, which include (1) Aku Kartini [I am Kartini], (2) Wahidin Soedirohoesodo Sang Dokter Bangsa [Wahidin Soedirohoesodo the Doctor of The Nation], and (3) Menyusuri Tempat Tinggal Srikandi Aceh Cut Nyak Meutia [Strolling the Residence of an Acehnese Heroine Cut Nyak Meutia]. The participants were asked to examine aspects like text complexity, plot, illustration, moral values, and pedagogical strategies for classroom implementation. The data were analyzed qualitatively to describe the teachers’ evaluation on the quality of the books. The findings emphasize the significance of continuous teachers’ professional development, especially in book selection and utilization. The consensus surrounding Book #1 “Aku Kartini” suggests its potential as a valuable resource for teaching national heroes, as well as a model of quality historical fiction picturebook. We argue that adult’s evaluation, particularly teachers, in selecting books for children to read, play a pivotal role both in the children and in the practice of teaching

    Get PDF
Reading is one of the language skills that learners must acquire. However, many students experience difficulties because they lack English knowledge. There are strategies that students can use to overcome their reading difficulties such as translating, asking questions, and using other references. Research about English reading strategies has been conducted in several regions in Indonesia such as in Aceh Besar and Medan, but in Bengkayang, there has never been any research done on that topic. Thus, this study aimed to find out Bengkayang senior high school students’ strategies to overcome their English reading difficulties. The participants of this study were 90 first-grade senior high school students from four senior high schools in Bengkayang. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method by using a questionnaire as its data collecting instrument. The questionnaire contains three open-ended questions and sixteen closed-ended questions. The findings showed that Bengkayang students faced some problems in reading English texts such as lack of vocabulary and grammatical mastery. The strategies to overcome the difficulties are divided into three categories Support, Problem-solving, and Global strategies. Based on the findings, Problem-Solving strategies are the type of strategies that the students often use while comprehending reading texts

Technological advances are developing very rapidly and have become a part of human life in the 21st century. The digitalization era demands that educational institutions and the parties within them carry out educational transformation by changing the learning paradigm. This is done in response to changing times that require new skills in global society. 21st century learning emphasizes learning that is integrated with technology. Therefore, educators need skills in mastering three fundamental components, namely content, pedagogy, and technology, which can be understood through the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. This study aims to determine the integration of technology by private middle and high school teachers in Jabodetabek in 21st century learning based on the TPACK component. A total of 138 participant data was obtained by self-report via electronic questionnaire using convenience sampling and analyzed using the descriptive statistical analysis method. The study results show that teachers have adequate knowledge regarding the integration of technology in the education sector because the majority of teachers' scores are in the high category. The Covid-19 pandemic has also increased the integration of technology in the learning process. In utilizing technology, most teachers use Google Classroom as a type of Learning Management System (LMS) that can increase learning efficiency

Personal Pronouns in Biden’s Inaugural Speech: A Critical Discourse Perspective

    Get PDF
This research primarily examines the first-person personal pronouns in political discourse, political speech in particular. This research aims to reveal how the pronoun I and we are exploited by the politician for the specific intention in political discourse. This research contextually investigates those personal pronouns and their inflectional forms based on the critical discourse analysis perspective, revealing the function and the purpose of producing a particular and an intentional personal pronoun to refer to specific addressee(s). That linguistic strategy in political context indicate the social and political relation between the speaker and the referents. The data in this research were taken from the script of Biden’s inaugural speech given in 2021. From 224 first-person personal pronouns, Biden produced the pronoun I and its inflectional forms 63 times or 28,1% and the pronoun we and its inflectional forms 161 times or 71,9 in percentage. Even though the plural form was identified as the most first-person personal pronoun produced by Biden, the occurrence of the pronoun we and its inflectional forms excluded Kamala Harris as his vice president. Biden exploited the first-person singular personal pronoun to express his gratitude, quality, positive image and persuasively to ingratiate the citizens. On the other hand, Biden expressed the pronoun we and its inflectional forms to establish a sense of national unity, togetherness to confront the challenges, and sharing responsibility. Personal pronouns no longer deal with language structure analysis only, but they are also employed to persuasively affect socio-political position, especially in a political context.

The analysis showed an applied proof of improved quality of teaching through Project-based Learning that established a safe and effective learning environment, and an inspiring cooperative and transformative learning

ATTENTION TO PROBLEMATIC SOCIAL GROUP REPRESENTATION IN GUIDANCE FOR USING MASS MEDIA IN ENGLISH EDUCATION

    Get PDF
While media studies amply document problematic social group representation in mass media materials, how English language educators are equipped to address these issues when they engage in the common practice of appropriating such artifacts for teaching is unclear. This research responds by collecting 319 prominent Internet sources providing guidance on using mass media materials for language learning and subjecting them to a content analysis. This analysis draws upon ten forms of problematic social group portrayal in the mass media as a conceptual lens. Analysis results indicate little attention to ableism, ageism, Christonormativity, classism, colorism, gender bias, heternormativity, lookism/sizeism, racism, and urbanormativity with articles universally acclaiming the integration of mass media materials into language teaching, primarily on the grounds of “authenticity.” Defined as materials authored by and for native speakers, this is an authenticity insensitive to authentic social group representation. This research is significant because of teacher reliance on the Internet as a source of materials, because of the global reach of English language teaching, the power of mass media, especially for youth socialization, and because there is a lack of previous research concerning how language teachers are trained to consider problematic social group representation in mass media artifacts
