Evaluation of Diabetic Wound Healing Activity of Novel Quercetin Topical Preparations

    Get PDF
Diabetic wound needs effective pharmacotherapy in order to accelerate the wound healing process and to prevent further infection. Quercetin (QUE) is one of flavonols which ispotential as an active ingredient for diabetic wound therapy, due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities.  This current study evidenced wound healing activity of QUE topical preparations on the open wound of diabetic-induced subjects preclinically. The investigation focused on topical administration of QUE nanoemulgels and QUE micellar gels (0.2% w/w of QUE) on groups of diabetic-induced male Wistar rats. The quality of preparations in terms of organoleptic performance, pH, viscosity and spread-ability was physically characterized prior to topical administration to the wound. Punch biopsy (5mm) was applied to create the open wound. The visual observation of wound contraction area (in mm2) was carried out every three days. On the day 12th, after sacrificing the subjects, the wounded tissues were removed, fixed in 10% formalin and prepared for histology examination-hematoxylin and eosin staining. The results showed that the QUE nanoemulgels and QUE micellar gels were relatively comparable onthe physical quality as well as the wound healing activity. Their wound healing activities were remarkably faster compared to the untreated control group and it was showed fromthe histology study that the QUE nanoemulgels and QUE micellar gels successfully accelerate the wound healing process to the proliferation step if it was compared the untreated. In conclusion, QUE nanoemulgels and QUE micellar gels were potential to develop to accelerate the diabetic wound healing process.

The first article in this issue of Retorik, “Human’s and Nonhuman’s Negotiations after the Conversion of the Function of Mangrove Forests into Salt Mines” by Eventus Ombri Kaho, examines the transformation in the relationship between humans and nonhumans following the conversion of mangrove forests to salt mines in East Nusa Tenggara. From a posthumanist perspective that draws from Donna Haraway and Rosi Braidotti, Kaho examines how the intimate relation between the inhabitants of the Weseben village with the mangrove forest were lost due to the salt mine development and goes on to consider how the damaged human-nonhuman “kinship” might be recovered. This research aims to look at the relationship between humans and nonhumans after the conversion of mangrove forests to salt mines in Weseben village, especially in Metamanasi village, East Nusa Tenggara. More than that, this research looks at negotiation efforts between nonhumans in building sustainable life from a posthuman perspective. The starting point for these negotiations was the destruction of mangrove forests which had been converted into salt mines. The existence of mangrove forests in fact has a very important role for humans and nonhumans in the Metamanasi area. Apart from that, the Metamanasi community is close to mangrove forests. They are able to recognize scent, shape, color and even bioacoustics. However, this closeness faded when the mangrove forests were exploited to build salt mines. The conversion of mangrove forests into salt mines has brought about huge changes in relations between humans and nonhumans in the Metamanasi area. So, the question asked in this research is how to restore relations between humans and nonhumans after the conversion of mangrove forests into salt mines? Why do humans and nonhumans carry out recovery after the conversion of mangrove forests into salt mines? To answer these questions requires research methods in data collection. Data was obtained through field observations, interviews, and data documentation from online media. The data obtained was analyzed using a posthuman approach, namely the “making kin” theory from Donna Haraway and “zoe” from Rosi Braidotti. So that in the end we see the efforts of humans and non-humans in restoring their lives as relatives as well as being subjects who continue to move

Wandering in Pakistan: The Paradoxical World of the Marginalized in Nadeem Aslam’s The Golden Legend (2017)

    Get PDF
This study explores the idea of place in Nadeem Aslam’s The Golden Legend (2017) to frame the identity crisis befalling the Christian community in Pakistan as a mirror of the similar experiences of marginalized groups in Britain. As a British novel expected to be read by Western readers, the depiction of the marginalization happening in Pakistan is utilized to allude to the condition outside the country: a paradox. The depicted paradox also recalls the history of Islam’s development in Türkiye and Spain, represented by the Hagia Sofia and the Great Mosque. The loss of ‘home’ causes the marginalized to wander in Pakistan, and, at the same time, they try to establish their identities and be remembered by society, both in the sense ofbelonging and of inhabiting memory. It is the same with the unsettled immigrant of Muslim Pakistanis, begging for their citizenship and being acknowledged in Britain. This analysis is based on Bhabha’s notion of unhomeliness and Derrida’s host and guest concept, composing an understanding that having no exact ‘home’, the Christian community being a guest to the Muslim community whose territory is obligated to preserve, is treated inappropriately. With these findings, we argue that wandering through places in Pakistan is an action determining whether one’s self is constructed or otherwise, illustrating Muslims in Britain having the same fate by remembering the golden legend told in the novel

Resentment against Racism in Koirala’s Sumnima

    Get PDF
The present paper seeks to analyze resentment against racism and ethnic consciousness in Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala’s novel, Sumnima, from the theoretical perspectives of race and ethnicity advocated by mainly by Thomas Hylland Eriksen. This paper explores how the novel primarily delineates the conflict between the Aryans, the so-called hegemonic group, and non-Aryans, particularly Kirats and Bhillas, the subjugated marginal community, in the Nepalese society. The obvious reason for conflict is cultural or religious differences. The dominant Aryansin the novel think themselves superior to Kirats and Bhillas. They think that they are the civilized ones as they obtain divinity through hard penance and spiritual transformation, while non-Aryans are wild, uncivilized, and devoid of good culture. It is expected that the research will be a useful reference for the researchers intending to probe into the Nepalese literature from the perspective of cultural studies

TRANSLATIONAL CONSTRUCTION OF ISLAND IDENTITY IN AMERICAN NRMS’ TEXTS: POSTSTRUCTURALIST STUDY OF MALTA NARRATIVE IN AMERICAN ENGLISH AND KIRUNDI NWTS

    Get PDF
The study investigated the construction of Island Identity through translation in American New Religious Movements’ texts (NRMs). The research used the descriptive qualitative method that is based on the American studies interdisciplinary method and Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality and notions of identity, abjection, and revolt. Moreover, Kovecses’ theory of Conceptual Metaphor (CM) in American Studies and Schmidt’s CM translation typology were used. Primary data were collected from the Kirundi New World Translation (NWT), American English NWT, and New American Standard Bible (NASB). Secondary data were obtained from books and articles about American NRMs, island, and CM translation. It was found out that in the conceptualization of alterity about island identity the source text (ST) is in abjection to the mainstream NASB. Moreover, the findings proved that, despite the subversion tints of the ascetic virtues from the center of the church, the target text (TT) is a nihilation of all island identity forms. Furthermore, it was discovered that the Burundi JW Bible imitates the ST to revolt against colonial and nationalist conceptualization and ipso facto to construct an island identity that supports the church’s propensity for the postnational and global discourse of American society and culture

Chemistry learning integrates three components, microscopic, macroscopic, and symbolic. However, during the Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, which lasted approximately two years, it caused delays in the learning process that integrated microscopic, macroscopic, and symbolic components, resulting in a decline in students' understanding. Therefore, community service brings new insights to chemistry teachers in Magelang city and introduces learning activities through small chemistry courses on acid-base titration materials with the theme of neutralization reactions.  This training was conducted by 2 lecturers and 3 students offline at SMAS Tarakanita Magelang. Based on the results of the satisfaction rating, 71.23% of the participants answered that it was very useful and 28.7% of the participants thought it was useful.
