“AM I READY TO TEACH?”: EFL PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ MENTAL READINESS TO TEACH AND IMPLICATION FOR TEACHER EDUCATION
Third-year pre-service teachers in the English language education department in Indonesia may feel uncertain about their mental readiness to become English teachers. Although they have a high-intermediate level of English proficiency, they often fear facing the challenges of managing the class and showcasing mental readiness to become teachers. Therefore, this study explores the third-year Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers’ mental readiness to become teachers, and the need to emphasize mental readiness and grit to successful teaching practice. Twenty-three EFL pre-service teachers enrolled a microteaching course, as one of the teaching practice components in the English language education curriculum, participated in this study. They were asked to write structured reflections on their mental readiness, and their reflections were thoroughly examined using a narrative analysis. The results showed that the pre-service teachers expressed concern about their ability to manage the class and their students, which reflects their mental unreadiness to be the person in charge in the classroom. Moreover, the pre-service teachers highlighted the need to be more mentally aware of their attitude and grit in shaping their mental readiness to teach. This study contributes to a larger context-specific understanding of the roles of the English teacher education programs at the university level in assisting pre-service English teachers to achieve mental readiness and grit that can help them address the challenges
SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS FOR ENHANCING GRAMMAR
Language learning, including grammar learning, requires social strategies involving interaction. The study explored the prevalence of social strategy use, patterns of social strategy use employed by English Language Learners (ELL) in learning English grammar, and the rationale behind their use. Using purposive sampling and a mixed-methods design (Grammar Learning Strategies Inventory – GLSI – and follow-up semi-structured interviews) with 194 Indonesian undergraduate respondents showed that social strategies were most employed, followed by metacognitive, cognitive, and affective. The findings also illustrated three social strategy use patterns: (a) involving teachers and more proficient others, (b) practicing with peers, and (c) involving peers as motivators. The rationales for social strategy use were further demonstrated: (a) to understand and avoid mistakes in the use of grammar, (b) share and enhance understanding of grammar materials, (c) know errors and correct them to participate more in learning, and (d) improve grammar usage. These findings provide practical and theoretical insights into students' social strategy use in the ELL context. Limitations and opportunities for additional research are also presented
MOTIVATION TO TEACH AND AI ANXIETY AMONG TESOL STUDENT-TEACHERS WITH DEGREE-YEAR AND GENDER DIFFERENCES
Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language teaching may induce anxiety among educators. This quantitative study investigates the relationship between AI anxiety and teaching motivation among TESOL student-teachers, an area that remains under-researched. The participants were 146 student-teachers in a TESOL program with different degree-years and genders. Two questionnaires examined the relationship between two dependent variables, AI anxiety and motivation to teach, and two independent variables, degree-year and gender differences. The investigation of AI anxiety encompassed four factors: anxiety due to learning, job replacement, AI configuration, and sociotechnical blindness, while the motivation to teach two factors: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The analysis was conducted using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and correlational analysis, and the findings revealed moderate levels of AI anxiety and motivation to teach. A significant difference in “job replacement anxiety” and the degree-year indicated that student-teachers could have different levels of job replacement anxiety in different years. Female student-teachers had higher AI anxiety and motivation to teach than male candidates. The minor positive correlations (%7-8) between AI anxiety, particularly the sociotechnical blindness factor, and intrinsic motivation show that intrinsic motivation could determine the anxiety level; therefore, teacher educators could give particular attention to reducing the sociotechnical blindness
‘MY ANCESTORS WERE DISPLEASED WITH ME’ – CHILDHOOD EMBODIMENT OF VARIANT INTERSEX DEVELOPMENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa constitutionally promotes affirmative gender and sexual diversity education, but the curriculum assumes normative bodies with binary classifications of external genitalia. Children born with intersex development present variant chromosomal, gonadal, or genitalia that deviate from the norm. Lensed through the Theory of Unintelligibility, these bodies are seen as ambiguous and derogatively labelled as hermaphrodites or Disorders of Sex Development (DSD), making them incapable of integration into socio-educational environments. This phenomenological study explores how young adults born with variant intersex characteristics learned about and embodied their sexual identity during their school years, using in-depth interviews with six participants selected with the support of Intersex South Africa. The evidence shows that participants lived in confusion for a large part of their childhood due to frequent hospital visits, examinations, surgeries, and family reactions without explanation. Learning about male and female bodies at school confirmed the messages about their abnormal bodies, resulting in self-hate and isolation. There is a need for child psychology services to support medical professionals, families, and educators in addressing variant intersex developments, providing trauma therapy for children, and including intersex development alongside normative sex development in sexuality education and awareness
EDUKASI SAY NO TO OBESITY (SOTO) DENGAN POLA HIDUP SEHAT DI KARANG TARUNA DEPOK JAYA
In this modern era of instant gratification, the problem of obesity is increasing, and adolescents are the most vulnerable age group to health problems. This study aims to increase the knowledge of Karang Taruna (Youth Organization) Depok Jaya about obesity and encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle through the ‘Say No to Obesity’ (SOTO) campaign. This quantitative study uses non-parametric statistical tests in the form of the Wilcoxon Test. The respondents in this study were 30 people who were part of the Youth Organization of Depok Jaya Village, Pancoran Mas District, Depok City. The results showed that 16 out of 30 respondents experienced an increase in knowledge. Statistical analysis comparing the results of the pretest and post-test shows a P-Value of 0.001 or 0.05, so that there is a difference in pretest and post-test scores or the effect of providing education on respondents' knowledge related to the knowledge that has been given through active learning methods. Feedback shows that games and activities could have a positive impact on respondents’ knowledge, which could be applied to future research
Mini Solar Power Resources for IoT system in the Vannamei Shrimp Pond Model
Shrimp pond water quality is one of the challenging issues for shrimp farmer to keep or even increase their production level to meet the domestic and export needs. Many researches have been done to help shrimp farmer to manage water quality using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. In order to make all the devices in the IoT system work properly, it needs an adequate power supply. Mini solar power plant installation is an alternative way to give shrimp farmers an electricity power access when their area has no electricity power network. In this study, we propose the use of mini solar power plants to supply the power to IoT devices in shrimp pond model. There are two main sub-system in this model, i.e. power supply sub-system and IoT based monitoring and controlling sub-system. Power supply sub-system consist of solar panel, solar cell controller, battery, INA219 sensor, and LM2596 step down IC. IoT sub-system perform monitoring and controlling on two shrimp pond models with Arduino Mega microcontroller works as the main processor. The mini solar power system works well as it was designed. Mini solar power plant capable of charging the 12V 40Ah battery in 5 hours. In order to make the IoT system works, it only needs 75,6 Wh from 480Wh battery capacity

Melancholy as a Source of Creative: a Paradox in Heidegger's Thought
This paper explores the paradoxical relationship between melancholy and creativity within the framework of Heideggerian philosophy. Building upon the notion that melancholy is not merely a psychological state but a fundamental mode of being, it argues that this condition, characterized by an awareness of human finitude and the limitations of existence, serves as a crucial catalyst for creative activity. Following Heidegger, the paper posits that true freedom, the cornerstone of creative expression, is inextricably linked to a sense of burden and responsibility, giving rise to a melancholic mood. This melancholic contemplation, while seemingly negative, provides the fertile ground for artistic and intellectual innovation. The paper analyzes how this interplay between melancholic awareness and the creative impulse manifests in various forms of human expression, from artistic creation to philosophical inquiry. By examining the act of creation as a confrontation with "nothingness" and a struggle to find meaning in the face of mortality, the paper demonstrates how melancholy, rather than hindering creativity, serves as its essential precondition
PENGARUH MODEL PENGAJARAN TERINTEGRASI TERHADAP MOTIVASI BELAJAR MAHASISWA
This study examines the effect of an integrated teaching model that combines Flipped Classroom, Authentic Learning, and Ignatian Pedagogy. The study was conducted to observe the learning motivation of Biology Education students in Biosystematics, specifically addressing the topic of “The Role of Biosystematics in Research.” A mixed-methods approach with a Convergent Parallel design was implemented to obtain the quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were collected through a learning motivation questionnaire using a 6-point Likert scale, and the qualitative data were gathered from open-ended questions to support the analysis of the quantitative data. The results show a high average motivation score from 5.37-5.40, with 82.86% to 97.14% of respondents choosing scores 5 and 6 for each item. These findings show that the integrated teaching model encourages engagement through intrinsic reflection and commitment to being morally responsible. Qualitative data reveal that students had been able to experience meaningful learning within real-world contexts, so they felt challenged to be morally responsible. In conclusion, the integrated model supports learning motivation by acting on character development through Ignatian Pedagogy as well as the 4C values (Competence, Conscience, Compassion, and Commitment).
Penafsiran Ulang atas Aksi Puasa Pembangunan berdasarkan Perspektif Moral Gerard Gilleman
Aksi Puasa Pembangunan is a program held regularly by all dioceses beneath Indonesian Church Conference (Ind.: Konfer-ensi Waligereja Indonesia). The spirit of this program in early years actually was only to help those who are economically poor. Many years later, APP program were developed in every diocese according to its context and function. Through entrust-ing APP in family stage, the Archdiocese of Semarang (Indo-nesia: Keuskupan Agung Semarang or KAS) tries to involve and build social structure. It shows hope that APP would edu-cate all members of family, to internalize charity value and diligently set some funds to give alms. From the perspective of moral theology’s history, APP’s ap-proaches have some similarity with manualist’s approaches. APP is an obligant program for all the dioceses in Indonesia. The new policy of APP which due in KAS since 2023, even highlightened the obligance side of this program, simply ‘forc-ing’ people to donate everyday for alms. The main question in this paper is: how this practice of APP, with all of its manualist strong nuance, develop moral of the faithful in KAS? Gerard Gilleman criticize the manualist’s practice which only discussed moral education from the out-side, rather than interior side of human heart. Moral act should explore the higher value which lead human morality to mature stage. Internal charity must set at the heart of moral life.
