Sign Language Detection Models using Resnet-34 and Augmentation Techniques
For deaf or hard of hearing people, sign language is a primary means of communication, but low public understanding makes social engagement difficult. Researchers now use computer vision technology and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to detect sign language movements. Problems such as overfitting and missing gradients still exist. Using CNN and ResNet-34 architecture, as well as image augmentation to overcome this problem, this research builds a deep learning-based sign language detection model. The Indonesian Sign Language System (SIBI) dataset was used to test the model. The test results show that the model with image augmentation trained for more than 50 epochs obtained an accuracy of 99.4%, precision of 99.5%, recall of 99.5%, and an F1 score of 99.5%. The model without image augmentation produced an accuracy of 99.4%, recall of 99.3%, F1 score of 99.3%, and precision of 99.4%. ResNet-34 architecture overcomes the problem of missing gradients, while image augmentation avoids overfitting and improves model accuracy

Pengaruh Kegiatan Ekstrakurikuler Terhadap Motivasi Belajar Siswa di SDN 05 Surau Gadang Padang
Choosing the right extracurricular activities affects the devel-opment of students' social, emotional, and cognitive skills. This study aims to identify the types of extracurricular activi-ties that are of interest to students and analyze their impact on their learning motivation at the Elementary School level. This study was conducted at SDN 05 Surau Gadang Padang with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews. Interviews were conducted with teachers and students in order to obtain detailed infor-mation. Researchers were directly involved in the data collec-tion process by interacting with teachers and students in the field. The theoretical framework used in this study is Abraham Maslow's learning motivation theory, which emphasizes the importance of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Extracurricular activities are one of the extrinsic factors that can increase stu-dents' learning motivation. The results showed that students tended to like tahfidz extracurricular activities that were car-ried out routinely every week, especially on Saturdays. Stu-dents' involvement in this favorite extracurricular activity has a positive impact on increasing their learning motivation. The data shows that learning motivation can be seen from stu-dents' enthusiasm in participating in the learning process. Students are encouraged to involve themselves in learning activities by memorizing lesson materials in class. The enthu-siasm of students in learning together shows the emotional and social involvement of students which influences the im-provement of social and emotional skills. The habit of memo-rizing formed through tahfidz activities has a good influence on improving students' basic cognitive abilities.
The focus of this article is to examine eco-ethics according to the encyclical Laudato-Si articles 138-141 as an effort to overcome the ecological crisis in Indonesia. Indonesia is experiencing an ecological crisis as a result of irresponsible human behavior in utilizing natural resources. The findings of this article are first, there needs to be ethics (transcendental awareness) in relating to organisms, in order to create order in the ecosystem. Second, destroying the universe is the same as destroying oneself because the ecosystem is a place of survival, if its balance is disturbed, it will also have an impact on human welfare. Third, nature as a life giver, natural resources play an important role in various aspects of life. Fourth, humans come from nature and return to nature. The role of the government is needed to issue strict laws. Also the role of society and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international cooperation in overcoming the global ecological crisis. The method used is a literature review with descriptive analysis. With this method, the team of writers found four contributions in the 4 numbers of the encyclical article concerned, namely in the form of eco-ethical values.
Pendidikan Iman Bagi Kaum Muda Katolik Menurut Paus Fransiskus Dalam Seruan Apostolik Christus Vivit: Pendekatan, Tantangan, Dan Arah Pastoral
Nowadays, the negative impact of the Digital Era and globali-zation has brought many young people into a crisis situation regarding moral values. As a result, more and more young Catholics are not growing in their faith and commitment to love God and their fellow humans. The faith education of young Catholics, whether in the family, church, or formal schools, seems unable to overcome the negative impacts of the Digital Era and globalization. Pope Francis, in his Apostolic Exhortation, Christus Vivit, pays special attention to the faith education of young Catholics. So, in this writing, the author wants to identify and describe faith education for young Cath-olics based on Pope Francis' perspective. Previously, Marihot Simanjuntak and Monika Br Bangun (2023) had conducted research on the same theme, but the content was more about the application of theory and did not explain Pope Francis' views regarding faith education for young Catholics. This re-search was carried out using library research. The results of this research show that there are three main approaches to faith education, namely the love and understanding approach, the inclusive and contextual approach, and the community approach. So, faith education is not just a transfer of knowledge but must touch the heart and build a relationship with Christ. This article also discusses the challenges and rel-evant pastoral strategies.
EFL TEACHERS’ ATTITUDES TOWARD INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF CHALLENGES AND PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS
This study systematically reviews EFL teachers’ attitudes toward integrating intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in English language teaching, focusing on the gap between their positive perceptions and actual classroom practices. Thirty studies published between 2014 and 2024, representing diverse educational contexts, were analyzed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The findings show that although EFL teachers globally acknowledge the importance of ICC, its practical implementation varies significantly. Influencing factors include limited understanding of ICC, deeply rooted linguistic priorities, inadequate professional development, rigid curricula, lack of authentic teaching materials, and time constraints. Despite these challenges, several studies report that teachers who actively integrate ICC employ practices such as the use of authentic cultural materials, critical discussions on cultural stereotypes, project-based intercultural activities, and comparisons between students’ own cultures and those of English-speaking contexts. However, these practices remain sporadic and largely depend on individual initiative rather than systemic support. The review highlights the need for targeted teacher professional development, flexible curricula, the development of intercultural teaching resources, and opportunities to enhance learners’ active participation. These measures are essential for bridging the gap between beliefs and practice, fostering learners’ ICC, and promoting a more inclusive and globally responsive approach to English language education.
PRE-SERVICE LANGUAGE TEACHERS’ READINESS FOR DEEP LEARNING APPROACHES: INSIGHTS FROM A CROSS-REGIONAL STUDY IN ASIA
This study examines the readiness of pre-service language teachers from five Asian countries (China, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, and India) to implement deep learning strategies. A total of 6,113 participants completed a Likert-scale readiness questionnaire administered via Google Forms, and their responses were analyzed using the Rasch model, focusing on their preparedness in pedagogical, technological, and affective dimensions. The results revealed significant regional differences, with teachers from China demonstrating the highest levels of readiness, particularly in pedagogical and technological aspects, due to stronger institutional support. In contrast, teachers from India and Indonesia showed lower readiness, particularly in technological integration and institutional support. Gender differences were also observed, with female teachers showing higher readiness in pedagogical and affective areas. Age played a role, with teachers aged 26–35 years showing higher levels of readiness compared to younger participants. The findings highlight the need for teacher education programs to tailor their approaches to address regional, gender, and age-related differences, ensuring that all pre-service teachers are prepared to implement deep learning strategies effectively in diverse contexts
FEMINIST VISUAL-LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF AKO AY MAY KIKI
This study employs feminist literary theory and a visual-linguistic analysis to examine the portrayal of femininity in the children’s illustrated storybook Ako ay May Kiki by Glenda C. Oris. It analyzes how linguistic choices, based on Abram’s (1999) typology of diction, and the use of color, guided by the principles of color psychology, contribute to the construction of female representation. Findings reveal that the storybook challenges stereotypes of women as passive through active verbs that depict the female protagonist as strong and assertive. The explicit use of anatomical terms such as “vagina” normalizes discussions of the female body by presenting it as natural and empowered. The minimal use of adjectives and reliance on concrete, everyday language frame femininity in practical terms. Visually, the deployment of warm, positive colors conveys body acceptance and empowerment, while neutral tones reflect inclusivity and authenticity. Furthermore, the use of green and blue—commonly associated with masculinity—subverts conventional gender coding and broadens the representation of femininity. By highlighting inclusive language and visual strategies, the study underscores how the text and illustrations facilitate body consciousness, gender sensitivity, and positive self-esteem among children
MOTIVATION-IN-CONTEXT: A STUDY OF L2 IDENTITY FORMATION IN A DOMINANTLY L1 UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT
This study was conducted to identify the interplay between the formation of self-image and the perception of learners about their identity as Sri Lankan English speakers. Motivation in language learning has been associated with various factors (motives) that play a role in persuading the learners to learn a language. Recent research in motivation have picturised motivation as a crucial element in language learning which is affected by a host of other factors that are contextually unique. In Sri Lankan tertiary learning environment, the need for English language has been felt mostly in the higher education and employment of the graduates. Thus, I aimed at obtaining answer to the question whether and how the learning experiences learners gain in the university of Jaffna motivate them to accomplish their language goals. I wanted to examine the role of their perception of their identity English speakers since this realisation is significant in pushing a learner forward to achieve their language goals. I used mixed methods research and gathered data from forty participants using questionnaire and selected five among them for semi-structured interview. Results revealed that compared to their school learning experiences, university provided them with adequate opportunities to be in English speaking environment and factors like their self-confidence, social expectations, and socioeconomic background supported in this process. However, since most of these opportunities were provided outside their language classroom, they benefitted only a few learners. Therefore, it is recommended that language classrooms provide more such opportunities relevant to learners' proficiency
John of Damascus, The Council of Nicaea, and The Islamic Challenge: a Theological Discourse on Christology and its Contemporary Relevance
John of Damascus (JD), as one of the foremost Christian theologians of the early medieval period, played a crucial role in defending Nicene Christology against theological challenges, particularly from emerging Islamic thought. This article explores the intersection of JD’s theological contributions with the doctrinal affirmations of the First Council of Nicaea, particularly concerning the divinity of Christ, His consubstantiality with God the Father, and His eternal pre-existence. The study contrasts these affirmations with Islamic perspectives that regard Jesus (Isa) as a mere human prophet, distinct from divinity and created rather than eternally begotten. By analyzing JD’s apologetics, this article demonstrates how he sought to uphold Nicene orthodoxy amidst the rise of Islam, which presented a monotheistic framework rejecting Trinitarian theology. Furthermore, the study examines the enduring relevance of JD’s theological approach in contemporary interfaith dialogues between Christianity and Islam, particularly in addressing Christological differences. By revisiting his arguments, this article underscores the significance of historical theological discourses in shaping modern religious discussions and fostering a deeper understanding between Christian and Muslim communities
