ENGLISH LITERATURE IN EFL CLASSES: THE CASE OF A UNIVERSITY IN VIETNAM

    Get PDF
Literature used to be a great source of material for language teaching when it was the heyday of the grammar-translation approach. However, its inherent linguistic complexity and the practicality of the emerging CLT approach to language teaching split language practitioners: while some turn their back on literature, others find it useful as an authentic source for language use and creativity. In the EFL context, the inclusion of English literature in language classes for language development purposes has resulted in teachers’ dilemma about the balance between teaching literature as a study and teaching it for language study purposes. This study examines how teachers of English literature at a university of foreign languages in Central Vietnam used literary works in their EFL-majoring classes and what benefits and challenges they encountered while teaching literature to EFL students in language classrooms. The study employs a qualitative research design, with relevant data being collected through structured interviews and teachers’ critical reflections. The findings showed that teachers’ approaches to literary works varied depending on literary text types and teachers’ preferences, but they tended to focus on students’ evaluation of literary beauty, their understanding of socio-cultural life, and their responses to the situation in the works. Activities to promote language proficiency were mainly oral discussion, integrated into analysis and discussion tasks. Considering the benefits of teaching English literature in an EFL setting, teachers found that they could raise students’ intercultural awareness, develop students’ critical thinking and literary competence through life-like situations in the literary works. However, the findings also gave rise to the challenges of focusing on the cultural model of teaching literature, thereby hindering the attainment of language knowledge and skills. The study implies the significance of assertive learning objectives and outcomes

COGNITIVE STRATEGIES FOR CRITICAL THINKING IN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING

    Get PDF
This study aimed to examine the cognitive strategies of critical thinking in high school students' argumentative writing. Despite extensive research on critical thinking and argumentative writing, there is a lack of in-depth analysis of the specific cognitive strategies employed by high school students in their argumentative essays. Using a case study approach, data from 120 students at SMAN 2 Wonosari were collected through document analysis. Four findings related to the cognitive strategy of critical thinking were obtained in this study. (1) Interpretation is realised through the author's point of view and the formation of definitions, with positions expressed as either opposition or support. (2) The analysis was conducted by identifying the components and structure of arguments, where components included premises and conclusions, and structures were categorised as simple or complex arguments. (3) Inference is achieved through deductive and inductive reasoning. Deductive reasoning follows general patterns, such as chained arguments, modus ponens, and modus tollens, whereas inductive reasoning involves generalisation and causality. (4) The evaluation focuses on accuracy and logical correctness, with accuracy determined by the truth of the premises and logical correctness assessed through valid and strong arguments. The findings serve as a crucial resource for educators and students to enhance critical thinking skills in academic writing, potentially leading to improved teaching methods and student performance in argumentative essay writing

HUMANISM PERSPECTIVE OF INDONESIAN POP MUSIC ALBUM COVERS IN THE 1980S ERA

    Get PDF
This study investigates the visual representation of Indonesian pop musicians on album covers from the 1980s and examines how these visual artifacts reflect and reinforce deeper humanistic values. During this period, pop culture in Indonesia experienced a significant transformation, with musicians gaining popularity through their music and the symbolic construction of their public image, especially via album covers. These covers functioned as powerful cultural texts, shaping public perception, constructing idealized identities, and influencing the emotional and aspirational relationships between idols and their fans. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in the humanism perspective, the study used five ontological elements of humanism—the self-interpreting animal, purposeful agent, language animal, dialoguing animal, and embodied subject—as analytical tools to unpack the visual strategies employed in these album covers. These elements helped explain how musicians were portrayed as entertainers and as representations of human ideals and existential values. The analysis reveals that album covers fostered a form of idolization that aligned with humanistic desires for identity, purpose, and self-fulfillment. These visual narratives supported the cult of personality and embedded ideological meanings that continue to resonate in contemporary pop culture. This research contributes to the broader discourse on design, cultural identity, and humanist thought in contemporary Indonesian visual culture

Preaching about the Holy Trinity: Inspiration from Pope Francis

    No full text
Every year, there is one Sunday to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This means that every year, priests have the opportunity to give a homily or sermon in order to explain for their flock the meaning of the Triune God. With a 10-minute time limit for homilies set by Pope Francis, it is important for preachers to find a balance between simple delivery and rich theological reflection. How to do it? This research analyzes Pope Francis' sermons and homilies on the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, over a period of 10 years (2013-2023), to understand how the Pope offers a theological synthesis of the Triune God concept. This research consists of three parts: collecting and reading the Pope's sermon as primary data, processing and analyzing it in-depth, then finally figuring out the theological influences to the Pope's views and teachings about the Holy Trinity, especially Ignatian spirituality. This research shows that Pope Francis offers a balanced and easy-to-understand reflection on the Triune God, Christology, and soteriology. From the Pope's sermons, preachers are reminded to ensure a grounded experience of the Trinity in the lives of the faithful, making the theological concept transformative and at the same time relevant

Bubble flow configurations generated by ejector type bubble generator

    Get PDF
Bubble flow configurations generated by an ejector bubble generator were captured using a high-speed video camera and extracted into several images. The air flow and nozzle diameter were varied during the test in ranges of 0.1-1.5 lpm and 1.17-3.5 mm, respectively. The results reveal that in general the bubble flow structure coming out from the bubble generator is divided into three regions, namely the entrance, bubble swarm, and bubble dispersed region. It is found that there is a higher time delay of bubble production when the air flow and the nozzle diameter decrease. On the other hand, the bubble production time is longer, if the air flow and the nozzle diameter increase

    No full text
Music is a literary work that serves as a means of psychological expression for individuals. This can be seen in the lyrics of the song Sekuat Sesakit, which describe the ego defense mechanisms of repression and reaction formation. This situation is interesting to study in depth due to the limited research on the analysis of ego defense mechanisms in song lyrics. This study aims to explore how the lyrics of the song Sekuat Sesakit reflect ego defense mechanisms and their impact on an individual's psychological condition. This study uses the hierarchy of ego defense mechanisms theory described by George Vaillant. The object of study in this research is the lyrics of the song Sekuat Sesakit performed by Idgitaf. This study uses a qualitative method with a thematic analysis technique. The results of this study show that repression and reaction formation fall into the neurotic level of the ego defense mechanism theory. The long-term use of repression and reaction formation can cause psychological disorders that negatively affect an individual's mental health. The information from this study is expected to add to the understanding of the concept of ego defense mechanisms through song lyrics from a psychological perspective

Translanguaging for Transformation: Identity, Equity, and Pedagogical Resistance in Nepalese ELT Classrooms

    Get PDF
Translanguaging refers to the dynamic, natural, and purposeful mixing of multiple languages in communication. It has become popular among English language teachers in multilingual settings. It promotes learner agency and acknowledges individual identities and experiences. However, some teachers still mistakenly view multilingualism as a barrier rather than an asset in English Language Teaching (ELT). Despite the advantages of translanguaging in ELT, little empirical research has been done on its use in Nepalese ELT classrooms, especially when it comes to the teachers' perspectives. The study aims to investigate the roles of translanguaging in ELT classrooms and to analyze the teachers' experience of using translanguaging in ELT classrooms. Employing the phenomenological research design, the researcher purposively selected three English language teachers teaching in three different public schools in the Sunsari district for in-depth interviews. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded, categorized, and analyzed thematically. The study found that teachers affirm students' identities and promote an inclusive learning environment by using translanguaging as a transformative tool. The study additionally shows how teachers challenge the exclusive English and mix multiple languages to create a translingual space that empowers students and fosters equity in the classroom. The study concluded that translanguaging is a flexible approach to ELT that enhances student engagement and understanding of content. It implies that teachers in multilingual contexts adopt a translingual pedagogical approach to embrace diversity, promote social justice, and empower their students
