    Get PDF
This research investigates helmet usage rate and motorcyclists’ awareness of road safety laws regarding helmet usage in the Darial Union of Bakerganj Upazila, Bangladesh. A structured questionnaire collected data from 100 participants representing various age groups and professions. Then, data analysis using JASP software revealed significant gaps in helmet usage and awareness of road safety laws regarding helmet usage, particularly among younger individuals aged 15-20 and motorcycle drivers. At the same time, older participants (aged 41 and above) demonstrated higher helmet usage and better understanding; younger riders and those in high-risk professions, such as motorcycle drivers, students, and the unemployed, needed to be more informed and compliant with safety practices. The findings highlight the importance of focused educational efforts and training programs to promote helmet use and raise road safety awareness, particularly in Darial Union's rural districts

CORPUS-BASED LEXICAL BUNDLES IN AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURAL SPEECHES

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper was to investigate the use of lexical bundles in the inaugural speeches of Democratic and Republican presidents in the United States in order to identify linguistic differences associated with lexical bundles. Drawing on Biber et al. (2004) framework, the study used AntConc software (version 3.5.9; Anthony, 2020) to analyse the lexical bundles used in the speeches. The study found that noun phrase (NP) fragments were the common structural pattern in all speeches. Democratic presidents tended to use NP + of phrase fragments, whereas Republican presidents used prepositional phrase (PP) + of fragments. In terms of the functional classification, both political parties showed a strong priority for referential expressions. These findings point to different linguistic styles associated with each political party, influencing their communication styles in public discourse. Future research is encouraged to look into how linguistic patterns influence political communication and persuasive strategies

ARGUMENT SCHEMATIC PATTERNS IN EXPOSITORY TEXT WRITING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

    Get PDF
Writing arguments is a form of patterns and schemata that students have. Therefore, it is important to explore it comprehensively, so that this research aims to reveal argument schemata patterns, both basic and complex patterns, as well as their linguistic features. Through a qualitative approach with schemata theory and Toulmin argument patterns, the research produced three patterns, namely the basic pattern C-G 31 data (27.43), the simple pattern C-G-W 21 data (18.58), and the complex pattern C-G-W-B 10 data (8.85), C-G-W-B-Q 12 data (10.62), C-G-W-B-Q-R 7 data (6.20), C-G-Q 8 data (7.08), C-G-W-Q 11 data (9.73), C-G-B 7 data (6.20), and C-G-W-R 6 data patterns (5.31). Basic patterns are composed of two elements, simple patterns of three elements, and complex patterns are formed beyond the basic and straightforward. Students assert the definition using the linguistic schemata "is" as a claim and describe the object using the linguistic feature "is" in the claim to bolster the argument and serve as a warrant. Reaffirmation through the use of linguistic features, such as "my conclusion," "therefore," "so," "which," "even," and "must," as protection. In summary, three types of student argument schemata are present in the composition of expository texts: basic patterns, simple patterns, and complex patterns

Meropenem Determination in Human Plasma by LC-MS/MS and Evaluation for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring in ICU Patients

    Get PDF
Meropenem is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic widely used in intensive care units (ICUs) for severe bacterial infections. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is essential to optimize its dosing, ensuring effective bacterial eradication while minimizing toxicity and resistance. This study aimed to determine meropenem concentrations in human plasma using LC-MS/MS and evaluate its application in TDM for ICU patients. Meropenem concentrations in plasma samples from ICU patients were analysed using a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method. The study included 40 plasma samples from 20 patients receiving meropenem continuous infusion. Validation followed ICH M10 (2022) guidelines, assessing specificity, accuracy, precision, stability, and dilution integrity. The developed LC-MS/MS method demonstrated high selectivity, sensitivity, and linearity (r = 0.9930.996) over the 102000 ng/mL range. Accuracy and precision met ICH M10 acceptance criteria, with %CV 15%. All ICU patients maintained %fTMinimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) 40%, ensuring adequate bacterial eradication. Notably, patients with renal impairment required dose adjustments, while those with high creatinine clearance needed increased dosing. The validated LC-MS/MS method is suitable for meropenem TDM in ICU patients, allowing individualized dosing adjustments to optimize therapy

Persuasion, Face-Threatening Acts, and Mitigation Strategies in Southeast Nigeria Haggling Encounters

    Get PDF
Given the fact that haggling could provide the opportunity for deceit, the seller employs different persuasive strategies to convince the, already alerted, buyer to patronise them. However, despite such persuasive strategies, there could be communication breakdown because of distrust and suspicion among the interactants. Such communication breakdown requires a repair for a successful haggling encounter. This study looks at the main artistic modes and pragmatic strategies of persuasion used in southeast Nigerian markets to identify the pragmatic techniques that are used to mitigate threatened face in market encounters. The data consist of ninety sampled haggling experiences involving wholesalers (15), retailers (15), apprentices (15), and customers (45), taken from the five states that comprise Southeast Nigeria. The data analysis draws on Aristotle's threefold method of persuasion, paying close attention to the pathos and logos of his rhetorical appeals, and Mey’s (2001) theory of pragmatic acts.  The analysis shows that there is strong presence of logos in the data, with a predomination of the pathos component of the rhetorical appeals. The research also indicates that while face-threatening acts are practed through questioning, comparing, and doubting, it is also mitigated through apologising, euphemising and blame transfer.

Cultural Studies after the End of the World?: Introducing Vol. 13 No. 2

    Get PDF
The present issue of Retorik was envisioned as the second installment of the special volume celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Graduate Program in Cultural Studies at Sanata Dharma University. While Vol. 13, No. 1—featuring a guest editorial by one of the founders of the Program, Dr. Stanislaus Sunardi—comprises six articles from alumni of the Program who were invited to contribute, several articles included in this issue, Vol. 13, No. 2, are responses to an open call for papers circulated in April 2025. The theme of the CfP was: “Cultural Studies after the End of the World,” or, in the Indonesian version, “Kajian Budaya Setelah Kiamat.” Of course, what is meant by “the end of the world”—deliberately rendered with theological undertones in the Indonesian version, i.e., as “kiamat” (apocalypse) rather than the more neutral “akhir dunia”—merits some clarification

Dunia Akademik Sebagai Sekte: Pengetahuan, Kekuasaan, dan Kekerasan dalam The Secret History oleh Donna Tartt

    Get PDF
Amongst the themes that literary works in the genre of dark academia foreground are power and abuse. In The Secret History (1992) by Donna Tartt, a book that is considered to be foundational for the dark academia genre, power dynamics plays a central role. Set in a small liberal arts college in rural Vermont, the book follows an exclusive, closed group of six classics students alongside their charismatic professor as they deal with the aftermath of the murder of one of their friends and the events leading up to it. This research aims to explore how the relationships amongst the characters and knowledge, power, and abuse affect their dynamics in Donna Tartt’s novel. Through textual analysis that applies Michel Foucault’s theory of power/knowledge and Robert Jay Lifton’s thought reform theory, this study reveals how knowledge can become a tool of power to control students into blind submission, like cult members, even in an academic environment where critical thinking is encouraged. This research offers an insight on how Tartt’s portrayal serves as a commentary on the danger of unchecked power and conformity within academic institutions.

Hell on Earth 2024: Metaphors of Genocide in the Gaza Strip, Palestine

    Get PDF
Metaphors play a crucial role in shaping how society understands and responds to conflicts, such as the genocide in Gaza by Israel. Metaphors can illustrate the impact of events, direct global attention to injustices, and deepen the understanding of the scale and intensity of the humanitarian crisis in the region in a way that is more easily comprehensible. In the international media coverage of Al-Jazeera, metaphorical expressions are often used to describe Israel’s attacks and the suffering that occurred in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. The purpose of this study is to explain the concepts produced from the use of metaphorical expressions related to Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip in Al-Jazeera news articles. This study applies Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory and Charteris-Black's critical metaphor analysis. Based on the analysis, four metaphorical concepts of the Gaza genocide were identified: ISRAEL’S AGGRESSION IS GAZA’S GENOCIDE, THE GAZA GENOCIDE IS A CATASTROPHE, PALESTINIANS ARE NOT HUMAN, and GAZA IS A GHOST TOWN. The metaphor concepts depict a social reality schema in the form of identity, force, scale, and unity/multiplicity that reflects the social reality of violence, oppression, and dehumanization. The four metaphor concepts show the process of Israel’s attacks, a depiction of life in the Gaza Strip, the dehumanization of Palestinians, and the impact of Israel’s genocide on Gaza. These are closely related to Israel’s colonialism practices which aim to control the region through occupation, land stealing, and the erasure of Palestinian identity and rights

DYNAMICS OF BIOSTATISTICS LEARNING: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS FOR NURSING STUDENTS

    Get PDF
Biostatistics is an important subject in nursing education because it contributes to clinical decision-making and health research. However, many nursing students find biostatistics difficult because they are not directly used in nursing practice. This study aims to explore the dynamics of biostatistical learning to improve teaching approaches in the future. The study uses a Mixed Methods Research (MMR) design with an explanatory sequential approach which is carried out in two stages. The first stage involved 94 nursing students to measure satisfaction and concentration in learning. Quantitative results revealed that 80.9% of students were satisfied, although dissatisfaction arose from unclear goals and inappropriate lecture times. In addition, 72.3% of students had moderate concentration, with peer conversation invitations being the main challenge. In the second stage, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with 8 students explored these findings further. The integration of qualitative and quantitative data identifies key themes, namely clarity of learning objectives, lecture time, classroom atmosphere, technology support, and teaching effectiveness. These findings emphasize the need for better teaching strategies and time management to improve student satisfaction, focus, and understanding of biostatistics. Addressing this dimension will increase the effectiveness of biostatistics education for nursing students
