CORPUS-INFORMED AND CRITICAL APPROACHES TO ADDRESSING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)

    Get PDF
This paper showcases how a do-it-yourself (DIY) corpus on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be used to increase corpus users’ language awareness (at word, phrase, sentence, and discourse levels) and criticality. To this end, the author justifies the close link between corpus linguistics, various critical approaches, and SDGs in the applied linguistics/ELT literature. Subsequently, the author provides an overview of principles for creating a specialized DIY corpus containing around 700,000 words/tokens based on 882 articles of The Jakarta Post from 2012 to mid-2024. In view of critical discourse analysis in corpus linguistics, SDG-related key word(s) in context (KWIC) were analyzed in four stages to examine their (1) frequencies and collocates, (2) concordance lines, (3) larger contexts within or across texts in the corpus (or beyond), and (4) potential to stimulate questions aiming at social transformation. In the findings, the four-stage analyses explore two of the most frequent SDGs in the corpus – “gender” (SDG 5) and “clean water and sanitation” (SDG 6) – to illustrate poststructuralist and Marxist criticality, respectively. The decolonial criticality is demonstrated through a corpus analysis of the word “indigenous” and its collocates. Possible pedagogical applications of the corpus-informed approach are also discussed

STRATEGIES AND CHALLENGES IN EMPOWERING A PRE-SERVICE ENGLISH TEACHER WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHY

    Get PDF
Promoting inclusivity in language teacher education is essential for advancing pedagogical justice and fostering a socially equitable education system. However, research and practice in this area, particularly on mentoring teachers with disabilities, remain scarce. Most existing scholarship has focused on students with disabilities rather than pre-service teachers with disabilities. Addressing this gap, this autoethnographic study examines the researcher’s experiences mentoring a pre-service English teacher with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, who relied on a wheelchair, was unable to walk or write, yet aspired to pursue a career as an English teacher. Over one and a half years of mentorship, the researcher documented strategies and challenges through personal reflections and analysis of journals and interviews with stakeholders. Three strategies proved essential: adopting an inclusive mindset through differentiated instruction, actively listening to the student and his family, particularly in online learning and thesis supervision, and selecting a special school as the site for his teaching practicum. Three major challenges also emerged: addressing epistemic injustices and professional acceptance, coping with the absence of shadow lecturers and accessible infrastructure such as libraries and digital smartboards, and navigating restricted employment opportunities. These findings underscore the urgency of equitable accommodations for aspiring English teachers with physical disabilities

STRUCTURED INPUT ON THE ACQUISITION OF ‘ED’ ENDING PAST-TENSE VERBS AMONG RURAL INDIAN YOUNG LEARNERS

    Get PDF
The study examines how the Structured Input (SI) component of Processing Instruction facilitates the acquisition of past tense verbs ending in ‘ed’ among ESL learners, aged ten, in rural India. No studies on Processing Instruction have specifically focused on Indian ESL learners of this age group to date. Studies on Processing Instruction predominantly compared SI activities with alternative instructional methods, typically utilizing pretest-posttest comparisons for evaluation. In contrast, this study examines the impact of SI activities on a group of 24 learners through intra-activity comparison. The SI intervention comprised Referential and Affective activities. This study forgoes pretest-posttest assessments and focuses on the comparative analysis of the scores of Referential activities, that are designed as test-like worksheets comprising ten questions each. While some may observe the absence of pre-tests and post-tests as a limitation, this approach is justified by the inherently evaluative nature of the Referential activities themselves. The results of the paired t-Test and ANOVA revealed a significant enhancement in learners’ ability to interpret sentences in the simple past tense with ‘ed’ ending verbs through SI activities, which demonstrates its effectiveness in improving input processing among ESL learners

Imago Dei dan Masa Depan Artificial Intelligence (AI): Mengeksplorasi Kemungkinan Kemiripan dengan Ciptaan Manusia

    Get PDF
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing, impacting economy, education, healthcare, and spirituality. It mimics human cognition via learning, reasoning, communication, and problem-solving. Weak AI excels in narrow tasks; strong AI approaches general intelligence. In Christian theology, AI intersects with the Incarnation and imago Dei (Genesis 1:26–27), affirming human dignity through God’s image. This article uses a normative theological approach to argue that AI lacks an immortal soul, covenantal relationship with God, and intrinsic moral will—thus cannot bear imago Dei. Method: hermeneutics of key texts (Genesis 1:26–27, Psalm 8, John 4:24, Colossians 1:15), integration of Augustine, Aquinas, Rahner, Moltmann, and Pannenberg, plus descriptive-analytical review of AI in Indonesia. Findings: AI offers benefits (fintech, agriculture, Bible apps) but risks bias, dehumanization, and idolatry. Conclusion: AI extends human creativity but remains a tool, not imago Dei. Ethical, pastoral guidelines are urged for Indonesia.

MASCULINITIES AND ETHNIC CONFLICTS: THE NIGERIAN MILITARY EXPERIENCE, 1966–1970

    Get PDF
This paper examines the masculinities and ethnic tensions within the Nigerian military between 1966 and 1970. The study explores how different ideas of masculinity shaped the way the military operated and how it handled ethnic conflicts. The study sheds light on how various masculinities influenced the emergence of the first military junta, power struggles, and masculine roles during the first military incursion into Nigerian politics and the Nigerian Civil War. The paper relies on primary and secondary sources and adopts both chronological and thematic analyses. This paper contributes to a larger discussion on the intersectionality of masculinity and ethnicity in a military context by recognizing that both ideas contributed to recurring coups and political instability in Nigeria

SOVIET MASCULINITY CRITICS IN FIŠKIN'S CHARACTER IN МОЙ ПАПА БАРЫШНИКОВ (MOJ PAPA BARYŠNIKOV) MOVIE

    Get PDF
This research discusses critiques of Soviet masculinity through Fiškin's character in Moj Papa Baryšnikov movie by Dmitrij Povolockij. This research aims to identify how Fiškin's character embodies a critique of Soviet masculinity. The author used representation theory from Stuart Hall (1997) and the content analysis method from Krippendorff (2019). In the analysis, the author displayed dialogue and screenshots of Chafetz's (1978) concept of masculinity, contextualized within Soviet reality. This research reveals that Fiškin's character does not represent the seven key characteristics of masculinity, including physical appearance, functional, sexual, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, and personal. As a result, he serves as the antithesis of the ideal Soviet male. The filmmakers, benefiting from the post-Soviet era, form Fiškin’s character as a direct challenge to traditional Soviet masculinity, positioning this film as critical commentary on the era’s gender norms.

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to determine the best basic medium type and TDZ concentration for the development of somatic embryos from Dendrobium orchid leaf explants. Three replications were arranged factorial (2x3) in a completely randomized design for this study. First, there were two types of basic media, ½ MS and MS. The second factor was the concentration of cytokinin thidiazuron 1, 2 and 3 mg/L. Each experimental unit consisted of 5 culture bottles, each contained 5 explants. The research results showed that 1) The use of both types of basic media was able to induce callus formation on Dendrobium 'Gradita 31' orchid from leaf explants. 2) The use of 3 mg/L thidiazuron which combined with ½ MS or MS media was able to form primary callus faster than other treatments. 3) The higher percentage for embryo somatic and shoots formation were also found in 3 mg/L thidiazuron
