Hak Asasi Alam: Mempertimbangkan Conatus Essendi dalam Perspektif Materialisme Baru
This study examines the concept of natural rights through the lens of discourse analysis, focusing on how Baruch Spinoza’s idea of conatus essendi is reinterpreted within the framework of new materialism. Traditionally, natural rights have often been confined to the anthropocentric realm, ignoring the existence and agency of non-human entities. However, the emergence of the discourse of natural rights demands a paradigm shift, encouraging the recognition of the intrinsic rights of nature. Using a discourse analysis approach, this study seeks to examine how arguments and narratives supporting natural rights are constructed and contested in various texts, such as scientific publications, policy statements, and environmental activist manifestos. Specifically, the study attempts to trace Spinoza’s conatus essendi, the innate tendency of every entity to continue to exist and perpetuate itself, within the discourse of new materialism. New materialism offers a philosophical foundation that allows for the expansion of the subject’s rights, transcending the boundaries of humanity and recognizing the interconnectedness and agency of matter. Thus, this study not only highlights the ontological shift in the understanding of rights but also reveals the transformative potential of new materialism in reshaping the relationship between humans and nature. The results of this research are expected to contribute to the development of a more inclusive and sustainable human rights theory.
Manipulation, Socio-psychological Impact of False Promises of Marriage to Shona Women in Selected Shona Novels
This article discusses the victimisation of women who were promised false marriage by men in selected Shona literature. It unravels why women fall prey and quizzes why men manipulate the marriage institution for personal satisfaction. The article utilises the feminist literary theory to interrogate two novels, Makudo Ndomamwe (Men are All the Same) (2004) by R. Makaya and Imbwa Nyoro (1982) (Innocent Ones are Often Guilty) by R. M. Mumvuma. Patriarchy as a major tenet of the feminist literary theory is used as a key guide in the interrogation of female manipulation after they are promised marriage in these novels. A qualitative research methodology utilizing a textual analysis approach is adopted. Additionally, scholarly views are gathered through questionnaires to draw their insights on the interplay of the patriarchal system in manipulating marriage proposals by men among the Shona people. The study discovers that women in the novels succumb to suppression. They are suffering from sexual objectification, violence and male centeredness, female silencing, male domination and control. This transpires because among the Shona, marriage accords women a perceived social status and it acquires them lifelong companionship and attains them much more respect in the community where they were born. The article concludes by providing recommended solutions to women and the society in preventing and raising awareness on the manipulation of the marriage proposals
“Message in A Bottle”: Discovering Fanilect within Taylor Swift’s Fandom
This study delves into the use and impact of fanilect, a specialized form of language, within Taylor Swift’s fandom on TikTok. By employing discourse analysis, it examines the various forms and functions of fanilect in this digital community. The findings reveal four key types of fanilect: jargon, which consists of specific terms and phrases used only within the fan group; intertextual references, where fans incorporate Taylor Swift's lyrics or cultural references into their interactions; routine interactions, such as repeated behaviors or phrases during events or online discussions; and multimodal communication where fans express themselves through a combination of text, images, and videos. Furthermore, the study identifies fanilect's roles in shaping the dynamics within the Swiftie fandom. First, it contributes to identity formation, helping fans identify themselves as part of the community. Second, it establishes power structures, where knowledge of fanilect signifies status within the fandom. Third, fanilect fosters community building by encouraging emotional connections and shared experiences. Lastly, it enhances creative expression, allowing fans to engage with the fandom in varied and artistic ways. This research provides critical insights into how fanilect influences community interactions and identity within Taylor Swift’s fanbase, offering broader implications for understanding linguistic practices in digital fan cultures
IRANIAN EFL STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT, MOTIVATION, AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS TEACHERS’ USE OF HUMOR
Although humor in language teaching has received limited scholarly attention, research has consistently highlighted its considerable benefits. It is widely believed that incorporating humor can foster positive attitudes toward learning English. This study aimed to explore the relationship between EFL students’ engagement and motivation, and their perceptions of teachers’ use of humor in language teaching. It also sought to examine the relationship between students’ engagement in the classroom and their motivation to learn. To collect the required data, three questionnaires of course engagement, learning motivation, and students’ attitudes toward teachers’ use of humor were administered. Results of the Pearson product-moment correlation analyses revealed a significant association between course engagement and attitudes toward teachers’ use of humor in the classroom. Moreover, a statistically significant correlation was observed between EFL students’ motivation and attitudes toward teacher humor. Finally, a significant relationship was found between students’ course engagement and their learning motivation. These findings suggest that humor can enhance EFL students’ engagement and motivation, although its impact may vary depending on contextual and individual factors
INTERACTIVE THEMATIC MAPPING FOR EFL EDUCATION: EXPLORING SDG 16 WITH JAPANESE AND COLOMBIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
English language education has increasingly incorporated global issues to provide a link between classroom learning and real-world problems. The intent is that by examining such issues, students will engage with challenges while developing language skills in more purposeful ways. Acknowledging this, this study foregrounds the use of interactive online thematic maps for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 as the central pedagogical tool. SDG 16 focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions. Responses from 35 Japanese and Colombian university students regarding their use of interactive online thematic maps were analyzed. Across five university EFL lessons, this cross-cultural study used a Likert-scale survey to evaluate how interactive online thematic maps supported vocabulary, reading, analytical thinking, and motivation. Lessons integrated interactive online SDG 16 maps with discussion-based classroom activities that encouraged exploration of indicators such as homicide, corruption, press freedom, and access to justice. Results indicate that interactive online maps enhanced language skills, critical thinking, and understanding of SDG 16. Findings suggest that interactive online maps provide a visually engaging way to link language learning with global citizenship education. This study demonstrates the potential of interactive online thematic maps to integrate sustainability topics into EFL and promote deeper cross-cultural and socio-political awareness
EXPLORING CHINESE EFL TEACHERS’ KNOWLEDGE IN CONTENT, PEDAGOGY, AND TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION (TPACK)
This study investigates the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) of Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers from both student and teacher perspectives. As technology increasingly permeates education, understanding teachers’ TPACK factors, encompassing the interplay of the primary knowledge of content (CK), pedagogy (PK), and technology (TK), is crucial. Teachers’ perceptions of TPACK factors significantly impact the success of technology-integrated teaching. Equally important are students’ beliefs, which directly influence motivation and satisfaction. Aligning both perspectives helps educators better address students’ needs and expectations. A survey involving 694 university EFL students was compared with survey responses from 64 teachers, supplemented by interviews with nine teachers. Both cohorts acknowledged the importance of technology in facilitating CK delivery. PK and CK were deemed the most important, while TK was ranked lowest among the seven TPACK factors. However, teachers prioritised pedagogical content knowledge, whereas students emphasised technology integration. Moreover, teachers showed greater variability in their perceptions across most knowledge factors. These perceptions reflected the influence of demographic backgrounds and contextual factors. These findings underscore the significance of enhancing teachers’ technology-integrated knowledge and implementation strategies to meet student expectations. The implications are significant for educators and professional development providers in designing training programs and support systems

Kerygma of Joy for Defending Minority: Compassion Theology for Redemption in The World of Chaos
In a world marked by human suffering, systemic injustice, global crisis and marginalization of minority groups, the Christian proclamation of joy, kerygma, may seem counterintuitive or insufficient. However, this article argues that the Kerygma of Joy, as articulated in Evangelii Gaudium by Pope Francis, offers not only a spiritual vision but also a theological and pastoral praxis for defending minorities. Joy, in this framework, is not temporary happiness but a radical affirmation of human dignity in the face of suffering and exclusion. Drawing on biblical sources, patristic insights, and contemporary theological voices, particularly J.B Metz theology, this article explores how kerygma of joy becomes a counter-cultural stance that resists despair, empowers witness, and fosters solidarity with the marginalized. It further engages real-world contexts where Christian communities live out this joyful resistance in defense of minority identities, including religious, ethnic, and socio-political minorities. The article concludes by offering a pastoral vision that reclaims joy as an eschatological sign and a missionary strategy. In doing so, it invites the global Church to redefine evangelization not as cultural dominance or institutional expansion but as embodied compassion, dangerous memory, and solidarity in joy with those on the peripheries
IMAGINED SPACES AND MEMORY IN WALCOTT’S POETRY
The poetry of Derek Walcott is deeply rooted and attached to the landscapes of his land, and he infuses his poetry with memories from the Caribbean. He employs imagery in his poems that makes real and imaginary a sense of place, which is influenced by St. Lucia, where he grew up, and collective colonial history. This study examines the significance of imagined spaces and memory in Derek Walcott's poetry, exploring how the poet uses mental images and visions to create landscapes, settings, and atmospheres that delve into complex ideas, emotions, and thoughts. Imagination as well as memory plays a huge role in his poems, and it is infused throughout his works. This perfectly encapsulates the pieces of works of Walcott where poetry serves as a fusion of the real world with one’s visions. This study employs a variety of theoretical lenses, among them postcolonial theory, cultural studies, and ecocriticism, to explore the consequences of Walcott's poetry for our conception of identity, location, and remembrance. Walcott's poetry is a strong medium through which one can explore the intricacies of humanity, and this research proves the need for his work in not only literary studies but also cultural studies and others
