The Baylan in Modern Detective Fiction: The Rise of a Precolonial Character in Postcolonial Time
This research combines the conventions set by Jeremy Black and Francisco Demetrio on Detective fiction and the Philippine shaman, setting them against Ana Micaela Chua’s ideas on Alternative epistemologies. Using these conventions as a means to analyze selected stories in Jonathan A. Baldisimo and Ferdinand Benedict G. Tan’s graphic novel series Trese to establish the characteristics of the baylan, a new, purely Filipino type of detective. The study will use Francisco Demetrio’s study on the baylan to set the conventions on this pre-colonial character. Jeremy Black’s study on Sherlock Holmes will be used to establish the traditional detective model. This model uses logic and reasoning and rejects the supernatural as a solution to the case. Both conventions will be challenged using Ana Micaela Chua’s study on alternative epistemologies which argues that the investigative methods in Trese are not a rejection of logic, but rather an expansion of it. These studies were chosen to help establish the existence of a purely Filipino detective in the character of Alexandra Trese, a babaylan madirigma and protagonist detective of the series. The study aims to differentiate the Filipino protagonist detective from the Western Holmes model by analyzing Alexandra Trese and her role as babaylan mandirigma not only as a new form of protagonist detective but as a postcolonial version of the baylan. The main argument being that by defying the Western model of investigation and being grounded in Filipino culture, the babaylan madirigma is a new form of protagonist detective unique to the Philippines
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING IN PRE-SERVICE EFL TEACHERS’ FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT IN CRISIS TIMES
This qualitative case study deals with the problem of social-emotional learning (SEL) implementation in Ukrainian pre-service English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ formative assessment in the English language classroom. The research question is “How did the implementation of SEL techniques during formative assessment affect pre-service EFL teachers’ communicative skills?” It is particularly important in times of crisis, such as wars, natural disasters, or pandemics, when pre-service EFL teachers are socially and emotionally vulnerable. Taking into account that the assessment provokes additional stress and anxiety, the introduction of SEL techniques in formative assessment contributes to creating a fertile educational space with a focus on pre-service teachers’ emotional needs and mental well-being. The study found that integrating SEL techniques such as exit tickets, reading logs, dialogue journals, pilgrim’s journals, assessment rubrics, reflective activities, and graphic organizers into formative assessments significantly enhanced pre-service EFL teachers’ communicative skills, emotional intelligence, and learner autonomy. Participants reported improved engagement, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills, confirming the value of SEL-informed pedagogy in fostering both language proficiency and emotional resilience in times of crisis
UTILIZATION OF PADLET IN SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHING: PRACTICES, CHALLENGES, AND OPPORTUNITIES
The landscape of second language classrooms (SLCs) adapts to innovative language teaching strategies to empower language learners through various technology applications such as Padlet, which offers a dynamic and enhanced learners’ academic experience. This phenomenological qualitative research explored the utilization of Padlet in second language classroom teaching, along with the encountered problems of language learners in using Padlet, and its technological potential in second language teaching and learning. The data were analyzed thematically after a series of scheduled semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 210 learner-participants selected through a purposive sampling technique, while guided by a validated 15 self-developed interview guide questions. The findings highlight the Padlet as an efficient, multifunctional, and novel pedagogical tool fostering dynamic and inclusive language engagement and versatile language learning interactions, despite its restriction issues due to their limited technology exposure. With Padlet’s promising results, this study substantiates pedagogical evidence on Padlet integration in second language classroom teaching; hence, ensuring a more effective and efficient technology utilization, thereby handing more positive implications to ESL teachers and learners
RECONCEPTUALIZING ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN THE PHILIPPINES: INTERPLAY OF JOURNALING AND EMOTIONS
While language teaching focuses on structural aspects, intricacies of any language come along with schema and emotion. Journaling, recognized as reflective-effective language teaching strategy, augmenting lifelong skills, remains underexplored in its interplay with language and emotions in second language teaching and learning. This phenomenological qualitative research determined the impact of journaling on ESL learners’ writing and emotional aspects. Responses of 61 Grade 8 ESL learners from provincial laboratory Science high school in Central Luzon, Philippines, during the Academic Year 2023-2024, were chosen through non-probability sampling method. After a series of in-depth face-to-face interviews guided by a set of 10 validated self-developed guide questions, responses were systematically arranged, coded, analyzed, characterized, and thematically interpreted. Findings reveal that through journaling, ESL learners showed engaging and positive language learning experience. While approaching journal writing tasks, the ESL learners involved a piece of themselves, transcending writing at a personal-academic level rather than structural-technical alone. As ESL learners improved language and emotional skills through journaling, they were still cognizant of being judged by peers and teachers. This research contributes to comprehensive understanding of reflective writing practices in language education, providing evidence-based insights for educators and policymakers to enhance both academic and emotional aspects of ESL learners’ experiences

SADAR KEKERASAN GENDER BERBASIS ONLINE (KBGO): EDUKASI DIGITAL BAGI REMAJA SMP DI KOTA JAYAPURA
Online gender-based violence (OGBV) poses a serious risk to teenagers, especially those with low digital literacy. Although teenagers are the most active internet users, many remain unaware of the threats posed by the digital space. This community service program aimed to raise awareness and educate junior high school students on GBV in the online sphere. Conducted on May 30, 2024, at SMP Negeri 11 Kota Jayapura, the program targeted 41 students (27 female and 14 male) aged 13–16 years, representing grades VII–IX. The activity was carried out in three stages: a pretest to assess initial knowledge, a 90-minute awareness session using customized SAFEnet materials delivered in Papuan dialect, and a posttest to measure learning outcomes. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, and results were analyzed quantitatively by comparing pretest and posttest responses. The findings showed a significant increase in student knowledge across all key OGBV topics. For example, awareness of the term OGBV rose from 3.7% to 100% among female students and from 0% to 100% among male students. These results indicate that targeted digital literacy programs can be highly effective in improving students’ understanding of online safety and gender-based violence. The activity also fostered critical awareness that the internet, while useful, is not always a safe space. This initiative is expected to empower teenagers to use digital platforms more wisely and safely while promoting respectful online interactions

Assuming this allegorical interpretation might be accurate, the questions remain. Who are the lovers there? How do we make sense of love's lustful and pleasurable dimension as portrayed in detail throughout the book?
