Truancy is an anti-social behaviour and its prevalence in upper basic schools in Nigeria is alarming. Social Studies as a problem-solving discipline is one of the best ways of curbing truancy. The study therefore assessed role of Social Studies instructions for curbing truancy among upper basic students in Kwara State in Nigeria. The specific objectives were to investigate the forms, causes, consequences and ways of curbing truancy. A descriptive survey research design was employed. A self-structured questionnaire entitled “Assessment of Social Studies Instructions for Curbing Truancy” with 0.73 reliability index obtained through test-retest method was employed. Four research questions were raised and answered using mean ranking. The findings of the study revealed that the forms of truancy among upper basic students included truant behaviour resulting from dislike of subject teacher and repeated absence from school for a complete term among others. The causes of truancy were peer pressure and overpopulation among others. Consequences of truancy were found to include poor academic performance, student drop out and cultism among others. The discipline inculcated in students’ obedience to rules of school, attendance, punctuality and participation in school activities. It was recommended that parents should collaborate with schools on truancy prevention and intervention programs as it is clear that home factors contribute significantly to truant behavior exhibited by students

Challenges in Teaching English Consonant Clusters to Non-Native Speakers: A Phonological Approach

    Get PDF
This study explores how non-native English speakers, especially Indonesian learners, pronounce consonant clusters. Differences in their native phonological systems often cause these difficulties, leading to the addition of vowels or the omission of consonants, which impacts communication. The purpose of this study is to understand non-native speakers’ challenges when pronouncing consonant clusters in English. In addition, it also aims to find effective methods to address these issues. This qualitative descriptive study explored the phonological issues of consonant clusters taught by English teachers to non-native speakers. The data were collected through an online Google Forms survey that asked teachers about their experiences, opinions, and teaching methods. Only half of the twenty English teachers had received specific phonological training, and the majority had limited teaching experience, according to the survey. The results suggested that to improve pronunciation, more targeted teaching strategies such as phonetic drills and the use of multimedia tools are needed. Slow sound repetition and audio or video examples, which were the teaching methods evaluated, were found effective. Sound repetition was slightly preferred because of its active practice approach. This study emphasizes the importance of instruction tailored to students' needs and suggests the use of technology to improve the quality. Through a flexible and adaptive approach, it is hoped that students’ English language skills can improve significantly

Analysis of The Wife of Bath’s Tale from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales through the Lense of Propp’s Narrative Function

This study examines Geoffrey Chaucer's The Wife of Bath's Tale through Vladimir Propp's narrative functions as a means of understanding how Chaucer follows and subverts traditional structures of folktales. The Canterbury Tales is one of the most important works in medieval literature, while The Wife of Bath's Tale is especially famous for its complex depiction of gender relations, power, and moral teaching. The purpose of the investigation is to explain the structural elements of the tale using Propp's 31 narrative functions applied to folk stories. In mapping these functions onto the tale, the research underlines how Chaucer follows conventional patterns of storytelling but innovates in crucial areas, mainly when it comes to gender roles and moral redemption. This study used a structuralist approach which examines exactly how this knightly quest of redemption was non-traditional in that his intellectual and moral growth was pitted against the more physical challenges of traditional narratives. The results of the analysis are that 18 of Propp's functions are represented, whereas several of the most important functions—struggle and victory among them—are negated. Through this, Chaucer attacks the gendered prescription of medieval society and, through the figures of the queen and the old woman, develops firm arguments for female self-determination. The study concluded that Chaucer draws upon Propp's narrative structure in his resistance to and rearticulation of socially held attitudes regarding gender, power, and heroism—to develop the tale into a progressivist critique against traditional medieval values

GREEN ENERGY TRANSITIONS: CONGO'S 'MODERN-DAY SLAVERY' IN RAW MATERIALS DEMANDS

    Get PDF
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a country rich in cobalt and coltan—two elements necessary for renewable technologies—has come under greater investigation as a result of the worldwide shift to green energy, yet its miners are exploited. This qualitative study, which was based on the resource curse and human security theories, used document analysis of previous studies, policy reports, and current events to examine the conflicting reality of resource exploitation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the aspirations for green energy. The results show that although programs encouraging ethical production and responsible sourcing have promise, structural problems like child labor, forced labor, and dangerous working conditions still exist and threaten the fundamental safety and dignity of local people. In order to guarantee that the DRC's resource richness promotes equitable development rather than exploitation, this study highlights the necessity of international accountability systems and moral behavior that places a higher priority on human security and dignity

    Get PDF
This paper explores the multifaceted relationship between Yayasan (Pendidikan) Kanisius (YK) and the Archdiocese of Semarang (KAS), highlighting operational and relational challenges within a Catholic educational framework. The method used in this research was a literature study combined with empirical experience and interviews. Based on the author’s experience with YK Cabang Surakarta, the study outlines the foundational mission of YK to provide Catholic education, facing financial instability, declining enrollment, and limited support from KAS. The strained partnership was analyzed through Javanese social philosophy and Michel Foucault’s power dynamics, noting that hierarchical structures and inconsistent communication from KAS hinder YK's effectiveness. The author advocates for synodality through strengthened dialogue and mutual understanding, informed by Ignatian spirituality and Avery Dulles' model of the "servant Church." This approach calls for creative fidelity, where YK and KAS collaborate in decision-making to better address educational and social challenges. The study references theological insights from Evangelii Gaudium and Fratelli Tutti, urging KAS to actively support YK’s mission, especially to serve marginalized communities. In conclusion, the paper emphasizes a "servant church" model to transform the KAS-YK relationship into a partnership that honors both educational and ecclesial commitments. Improved communication and resource-sharing are essential for a sustainable impact, fostering a mission-centered community that aligns with the Church’s social teaching and the needs of Indonesia’s diverse society

Apakah Antroposen Saja Sudah Cukup?: Telaah Kritis atas Gagasan Keadilan Multispesies Donna Haraway

Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene (2016) by Donna Haraway proposes a new way of thinking to deal with the planetary crisis caused by ecological destruction, climate change and species extinction. Haraway rejects the term anthropocene, a geological era in which human activity is the dominant force changing the earth, and proposes an alternative concept: chthulucene—an era that emphasizes the interconnectedness, symbiosis and tentacularity of beings, both human and non-human. Through the idea of “staying with the trouble”, Haraway calls for not seeking an escape from the crisis, but rather living in its complexity and building a new way of life. The concept of making kin is central to her thinking: establishing kinship across species as a form of ethics and care for the wounded earth. With a multidisciplinary and imaginative approach, this book makes a unique contribution to the discourse of ecology and posthumanism. Haraway invites us to imagine an alternative future that is more just for all beings, not with total solutions, but through relationships and shared responsibility.Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene (2016) karya Donna Haraway mengusulkan cara berpikir baru untuk menghadapi krisis planet yang disebabkan kerusakan ekologis, perubahan iklim, dan kepunahan spesies.

Analysis of speech acts in song lyrics is crucial to understanding how language functions as a communication tool rich in meaning and emotion. The Japanese song Mayonaka no Doa (Stay with Me), sung by Miki Matsubara in 1979, has now stolen attention again in the era of social media. Its repeated popularity on various platforms makes this song an interesting topic for study based on speech act theory. This research aims to recognize and examine the statements found in the song’s lyrics while also investigating how language use conveys the emotions and scenarios faced by the singer and how it connects with the feelings and experiences of the listeners. By doing so, this study seeks to highlight the profound impact of the song’s lyrics on both the performer and the audience, showing the ways in which language serves as a powerful emotional tool for communication. This research employs a distinctive qualitative descriptive analysis with a pragmatic perspective, distinguishing it from conventional studies in the discipline. The researcher assessed each verse of the lyrics to identify locution, illocution, and perlocution. The study results show that various locutionary speech acts play a role in conveying information, emotions, and circumstances. The illocutionary speech acts in these lyrics include expressive, directive, assertive, and commitment, each reflecting a complex communication dimension. In addition, the perlocutionary speech act indicates that the lyrics of this song have a profound emotional impact on the listeners, influencing their emotions, hopes, and thoughts. This finding illustrates the beauty of language in music and the audience’s active role in the communication process. It provides insight into how lyrics can serve as a means of deep emotional expression for listeners, strengthening the connection between music and human experience.

The research examines how Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) offers some advantages for secondary school students’ Engagement in the EFL classroom in Indonesia. It also investigates some drawbacks encountered during DGBL implementation and provides refutations to disprove the counterarguments. The methodology undertaken is a synthesis research methodology. Relevant literature was obtained through peer-reviewed articles from reliable journals such as Google Scholar, ERIC, ProQuest Education Journal, and other relevant sources. The findings further reveal that teaching EFL classrooms under the framework of DGBL benefits students in three ways. Firstly, digital games can engage students’ emotions in the learning process by promoting a psychological state that is commonly known as a flow condition. It refers to playing a digital game with fun, interest, and deep concentration. Secondly, DGBL can engage students’ cognition by providing problem-solving activities that help students think critically to decipher the challenges of the games. Lastly, DGBL can also promote behavioral engagement by situating students in cooperative learning activities, which, with guidance from teachers, encourage students to participate collaboratively as a team during the gameplay. In this study, the investigation only focuses on which aspects of DGBL can significantly leverage students’ engagement in the EFL learning classroom. Therefore, further analysis is required to examine how DGBL can be an effective instructional strategy to meet the English standard competencies in the Indonesian national curriculum

    Get PDF
This article explores Macedonian university students’ reflections and preferences regarding online peer feedback in academic writing, with a focus on three key factors: the feedback mode (written vs. audio), the students’ role in the process (giver vs. recipient), and the writing task type (essay outline vs. fully developed draft). The study was conducted among second-year undergraduates enrolled in an academic writing course that integrated Padlet as a peer review platform. The data were collected through an online questionnaire that examined how students experienced giving and receiving feedback in both written and audio formats across different stages of writing. The study revealed that most students valued participating in feedback sessions across different modalities, although some of them reported feeling less confident when recording and posting their audio comments. Written feedback was preferred for the full drafts, while audio feedback was preferred for the essay outlines. The thematic analysis highlighted that written feedback was associated with comfort, easier navigation, and clarity, while audio feedback was valued for its spontaneity and the non-verbal communicative cues conveyed through the human voice. These findings underscore the importance of offering students diverse peer-review formats so as to encourage more effective peer feedback practices in academic writing instruction
