This research analyzes signs in the Anti-Corruption (Commercial Video)-Final Year Project uploaded by Muiz Hr, with a duration of 2 minutes and 9 seconds and 14 thousand viewers. A qualitative method was used to explore the visual meanings in the video based on Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. Primary data was obtained through random sampling from YouTube, while secondary data was sourced from literature related to semiotics and anti-corruption campaigns. The analysis focused on identifying icons, indexes, and symbols in five selected key scenes. The results of the study show a total of 9 icons, 5 indexes, and 5 symbols that were analyzed based on Peirce’s object-function theory. The combination of these signs proved effective in conveying an anti-corruption message. Icons provide real-life visualizations such as everyday social interactions, indexes reveal causal relationships with corrupt actions, and symbols reinforce the moral message through text and objects. The overall interpretation indicates that the video successfully raises audience awareness about the dangers of corruption, emphasizing that corruption can occur anywhere and anytime, thus requiring vigilance and preventive actions from society

A broader transformation took place in the literary fields, mostly in terms of the protagonists' internal conflicts and psychological issues in the 20th century, which can be clearly seen in the works of prominent writers like D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce. This research article explores the psychological issues and internal conflicts of the protagonists of Sons and Lovers, Mrs. Dalloway, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The main characters of these novels suffer from extreme identity and existential crises. Employing Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic frameworks alongside modernist narrative techniques, the study elucidates how the subconscious mind and the human psyche are intricately rendered in the portrayal of the protagonists. The most prominent writers of this period, for instance, D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce, largely use fragmented narratives to draw out the inner turmoil and obsessive-compulsive symptoms of the main characters in their novels. Focusing on conjugal relations, love, emotion, passion, psychological conflict, class conflict, and middle-class sentiment of the people of this period with a qualitative discussion, the paper finds that the Industrial Revolution and scientific development functioned as catalysts to transform the human psychology of this period

The First Spiritual Exercises is an adaptation of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignasius Loyola, designed to make them more accessible to a wider audience. In Indonesia, The First Spiritual Exercises have been introduced as Latihan Rohani Pemula (LRP) and are conducted through online accompaniment, enabling participation from people of diverse backgrounds, including Muslims. This study aims to explore the experiences of Muslim participants in LRP and its impact on their spiritual life and inner well-being. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, this research examines the experiences of three Muslim participants who took part in LRP: two active (registered) participants and one passive (unregistered) participant. Data were collected through telephone interviews, written reflections, and triangulation with facilitators and significant others (family members or companions). Descriptive analysis was conducted through processes of data organization, coding, and reduction into key themes. The findings show that despite differences between active and passive participants, both experienced meaningful benefits, including growth in prayer, experiences of God’s love, reconciliation with themselves and others, and more realistic changes in attitudes and behavior. This study affirms that LRP can contribute to the development of interfaith spirituality, support mental well-being, and open spaces for practical dialogue between Islam and Christianity

Unveiling the Linguistic Landscape of Educational Spaces in a Remote Indonesian Area

The signs materialized in the linguistic landscape (LL) symbolize what people believe about the language. Hence, most studies of LL focus on both language use and language ideology. While the study of LL is quite general worldwide, it is relatively new in East Nusa Tenggara, especially for those investigating LL in the educational setting. This study aimed to 1) find what language patterns and languages are exposed in the LL of the educational setting in Maumere City, NTT province, and 2) find the language ideology as the basis of why certain language was used and other language was rarely used. This research employed a qualitative case study. Data were obtained through documentation and interviews with 9 informants from 8 high schools and 1 university. The data were analyzed in three steps of qualitative data analysis: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicated that there were three sign patterns, namely, monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual signs. There were 7 languages used in the three sign patterns above, namely Indonesian, English, Indigenous languages, Sanskrit, Japanese, German, and Latin. The situation represented through the school and university landscape manifested the language ideology. Interviews with informants revealed four main themes: language policy influencing language practice, language as a learning tool, language as a school identity marker, and language as a symbol of culture. These results are expected to provide a wider insight into the LL study in Indonesia

LANGUAGE IN ACTION: INTERPRETING ILLOCUTIONARY SPEECH ACTS IN TICK, TICK…BOOM!

    No full text
Although illocutionary speech acts have been extensively studied in everyday and institutional discourse, their application in cinematic narratives remains underexplored. Existing pragmatic research on film dialogue has primarily focused on genre conventions or general speech act patterns, leaving a gap in understanding how illocutionary force constructs character identity and emotional conflict in creative storytelling. This study investigates the illocutionary acts employed by Jonathan Larson, the protagonist in Tick, Tick… Boom!, a Netflix original musical that dramatizes the tension between personal ambition and existential anxiety. Drawing on Searle’s taxonomy, the research adopts a qualitative approach to analyze 76 representative utterances from the film script and scenes, identifying and categorizing illocutionary force. The results reveal four types of illocutionary acts: directives (42.5%), assertives (26.7%), expressives (22.3%), and commissives (6.6%), with directives as the most dominant. These findings suggest that Larson’s linguistic behavior is driven largely by attempts to influence, persuade, and seek validation from others. By situating speech act theory within cinematic pragmatics, this study contributes to a growing body of interdisciplinary research and offers insights for scholars examining language use in media narratives. Future research may consider integrating locutionary and perlocutionary dimensions for a fuller account.

Increasing agricultural productivity is a key focus in supporting food security and the welfare of farmers.  One of the challenges in managing agricultural land in Bendung Village is the unpredictable availability of water and the reliance on traditional irrigation methods.  This often hampers the optimization of agricultural yields. This community service aims to apply an appropriate technology in the form of a sprinkler irrigation system as an innovative solution to improve the efficiency of irrigating agricultural land in Bendung Village. The sprinkler system used is supported by a renewable energy source in the form of a Solar Power Plant (PLTS), so that it is more environmentally friendly and sustainable. The methods used included socialization and training of farmers regarding the use and maintenance of sprinkler systems, as well as monitoring the impact of the application of this technology on crop productivity. The evaluation results showed a significant improvement in water usage and time efficiency. The irrigation process using the old system took about 2-3 hours of watering labor on a 600 m2 field, while using sprinklers, farmers only need about 30 minutes. The implementation of the sprinkler system not only reduces operational costs but also makes water use more efficient and lowers total costs significantly. With a total water saving of about 41.6%, this technology provides long-term financial benefits to farmers in Bendung Village. Additionally, the system's relatively easy maintenance also adds value to the farm's sustainability and efficiency.
