    Advanced Bayesian Methods: Assessing Convergence

    No full text
In this video, Associate Professor Gabriel explores convergence and how it can be assessed when estimating models in a Bayesian fashion using modern Bayesian computational approaches. This includes using trace plots and multiple or single chains starting from different initial values

    Bayesian analysis in a nutshell

    No full text
In this video, Andrei Zhirnov introduces bayesian data analysis, a way of statistical modelling that treats all the unknowns in the analysis as random variables. Andrei also explains what is meant by unknowns and what it means to treat the unknown as random variables

Binary logistic regression: introduction (video 1 of 3)

    No full text
In this first video of the series, Dr Heini Väisänen introduces the binary logistic regression, explains what variables can be used, talks about link functions and discusses how this model differs from linear regression. She employs a simple example with one explanatory variable to illustrate how the method works and how the results can be interpreted using either log of scale, predicted probabilities or odds

    Researching Corporations: a primer

    No full text
In this video, Professor David Whyte talks through some of the practicalities of researching corporations. He first explains what a corporation is and then he goes through some key concepts, including the 'corporate personhood', the 'perpetual existence', the 'limited liability', the 'corporate veil' and the PLCs and Ltd companies

The NCRM wayfinder guide to adapting interview practices for Covid-19

    Get PDF
The Covid-19 pandemic has necessitated considerable changes to research practices. This includes a dominant method for the social researcher – the in person interview – made impossible when social distancing is mandated for public health protection. This guide considers alternative ways of conducting interviews in Covid-19 times (walking interviews, telephone interviews, video-based online video interviews) plus alternative to interviews altogether (such as writing and podcasting). Readers are pointed towards examples from the research literature and research community that can support planning for research in the pandemic

Agent Based Modelling for Social Research- Introduction

    No full text
In this video, Professor Jakub Bijak introduces the online materials for a short course on Agent-Based Modelling for social research. He outlines the five ingredients of a novel approach from building, validating and analysing agent-based simulation models, developed as part of a four-year programme based on agent-based population studies funded by the European Research Council

    Introduction to Complex Samples

    No full text
In this video, Dr Roxanne Connelly offers an introduction to the issues associated with the analysis of complex samples. She explains what complex samples are and why data collectors choose to design samples in this way. She also illustrates the data analytic issues which complex samples introduce and briefly discusses the ways in which these can be addressed
