Social Capital and Quality of Life in Multi-storey Housing Neighbourhood Community
Social capital is a valuable asset with positive consequences on societal well-being, strengthen neighbourhood and increase the quality of life. The objective of this paper is to analyse a few dimensions of social capital in the multi-storey housing neighbourhoods community with household questionnaires survey of 797 samples. The findings demonstrated the bonding of social capital according to four dimensions. Different neighbourhoods in a different locality with the diversity of its people, and surrounding developments have influenced the pattern of social capital. Social capital in these community creates positive social values that contributes to increasing the quality of life
Malay Traditional Food Knowledge Transfer
This study offers insight into Malay festive cookery and its importance in the transmission of traditional food knowledge among the younger generation. Respondents were observed in four separate ethnographic investigations involving four Malay families. The results indicate that festive cookery plays a significant role for the younger generation to acquire knowledge about traditional food. Thus, it is vital to conserve the practice of preparing the meal for festive occasions to ensure the continuation of traditional culinary culture, customs, and traditions
Designing the Invention House Assessment Form for Kuala Krai, Malaysia
Floods can cause damage to homes. Some houses which have been significantly damaged, destroyed, or inhabitable. Inherently, victims should be given temporary or permanent houses depending on the degree of damage to their houses. Therefore, an assessment of the degree of house damage must be carried out as a direction for the recovery effort. Thus, this research seeks to design a House Damage Assessment Form. This form has been established by having an in-depth interview with experts involved in MERCY Malaysia and a literature review of the evaluation forms used by other countries to assess the degree of house damage post-disaster
Public Acceptance on GST and Quality of Life
In Malaysia, the goods and services tax (GST) was implemented in 2015 as part of a tax reform program to generate a stable source of revenue. This study explores human behaviour towards GST, a week post-implementation. The partial least square (PLS) modelling was used to establish the relationship between acceptance, knowledge and feelings towards GST as well as the quality of life. There is a positive relationship between the antecedents and the quality of life. Acceptance of GST exerts a significant relationship towards feelings and quality of life in the future
Creating Good Social Behavior through User-friendly Street Environment
This paper explores the notion of user-friendly streets. The primary concern is to identify the people’s need for social behaviours on street environment. The urban street environment is examined in respect of the physical qualities through the analysis of questionnaire surveys. Structured observations of the users’ activities and physical environment of the street was conducted as part of the multi-method approach. The users’ needs of a user- friendly street in the Malaysian context are mainly similar to the previous theories developed by other countries, especially the developed ones. However, the attributes that contribute to the factors vary for each context
Factors Influencing Hazardous Street Trees at Selected City Council in Malaysia
Street trees are an important part of city development. Proper tree management provides conducive environment for socialization. Previous research revealed the social factors and hazards associated with urban street trees but the elements that influence was not known. The objectives are: to investigate the elements of the social factors and to determine the influence of these elements towards hazardous street trees.480 questionnaires distributed among expert and public within 9 city councils. The findings revealed that 5 elements that influence the hazardous street trees; uncontrollable street planting, tree vandalism, near to neighbourhood context, lack of public awareness and poor nursery stock and failure care
Noise-Induced Cortisol Assessment among Young Motorcyclist: A field study
Saliva cortisol response was investigated from the motorcycling exposure for approximately 50 minutes between low and high noise-sensitive (Weinstein Noise Sensitivity Scale) young riders (19-25 years). The results showed significant difference (p < 0.05) in salivary cortisol concentrations in High-Noise Sensitive group (n=27). Significant gender differences were found (p < 0.05) among the Low-Noise sensitive group (n=30), after ride. Cross-analysis between groups was significant (p < 0.05) for before ride cortisol levels of Low-Noise sensitive group. This study suggests that subjective noise sensitivity plays a vital role in increased cortisol level among noise sensitive riders
Safe Driving Attitude as a Future Predictor in Determining Quality Of Life among Young Adult
The purpose of part II is to explain the correlation between driver's attitude and their quality of life. Based on the previous study, Attitude towards Safe Driving Scale (ASDS-46) was used jointly with and WHOQOL-BREF to examine the relationship. The result showed that ASDS-46 and WHOQOL-BREF have a high level of reliability with Cronbach's Alpha value .887 and .853 respectively. Domain 2 and 3 (psychological & social relationship) shows a positive correlation with the value of (P=.003 and .017). This study concludes that the positive correlation between driver's attitude and the psychological domain is an alarming issue which needs further investigation
Transparency Initiative for Enhancing QoL: Behavioural components leading to corruption
Transparency is an essential precondition for containing corruption. Construction is prone to corruption as it involves a large number of participants. Corruption is a deviant behaviour of an individual that should be looked into. The objective of this paper is to study the behavioural factors that lead to corrupt acts based on the Model of Corrupt Action. Questionnaire survey is utilised to derive to the solution. The results show that behavioural factors concerning the achievement of a certain goal do not predict corrupt action but the desire factors represent an important antecedent of intention by which a strong predictor of particular behaviour
House Design Preferred by Malay Wives
Previous studies suggest that home activities affect house design significantly. This paper aims at identifying roles and household activities of Malay wives and their relationship with house design preferences. A study was carried out on selected working and non-working Malay wives of Bandar Tenggara, Johor, Malaysia, using a combination of structured and semi-structured questionnaire survey. The results suggest that activities such as cooking and other day-to-day operations have some correlation with their sense of space. The results suggest that patterns of housewives’ home activities affect their house design preferences.
