    Low-Income Housing in Nigeria: A liveability investigation

    This paper examined the quality of life against the backdrop of the existing environment in the public low-income housing estates. Based on the desktop literature the study used both subjective and objective measurements to investigate the liveability of the selected housing estates. Home environment, neighbourhood amenities, economic vitality, social environment and civic protection were examined. The stratified random sampling was used in distributing questionnaire to household heads in all types of homes. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling (SEM).     Recovering Rural Economies: Two cases in Taiwan

    This paper concerns how rural villages recover their declining local economies based on two case studies in Taiwan, namely, the liquor industry in Sinyi, Nantou, and eco-friendly tea industry in Pinglin, New Taipei. Specifically, we study the processes through which rural villages managed to build new or transform old agricultural activities under different sectoral and local contexts, and, particularly, examine the roles of institutional actors, such as farmers associations and universities, in facilitating the recovery processes

    Environmental Practices of SICs Operators

    The uncontrolled lodging industry usually caused environmental degradation. However, some lodging operators have started to incorporate green practices in their operation. The objectives of this study are to identify green practices of Small Island Chalets (SICs) operators in Kapas and Tioman Island in Malaysia and to determine the differences of the green practices on the both islands. This study had employed case study method using in-depth interview and structured observation. Six case studies were selected. The findings had identified the difference and several green practices of the operators. Therefore, this study provides a platform for another similar study to be conducted

    Residential Space-Cooling Energy Use

    This study's purpose is to evaluate air-conditioning energy consumption by conducting interviews and recording data from 50 single-family houses. All study houses applying similar styles of tropical architecture and methods of building construction, with the U-values for building materials having moderate levels of thermal resistance. The finding reveals that the majority of households spends more than 37% of their energy costs on cooling during the raining season and estimating to increase by the drought seasons. The greater use of air-conditioners have resulted in an increased purchasing power of the population

    Fragrance Impact on Driving Performance

    Previous studies have indicated that certain types of fragrance in the vehicle are useful in keeping the driver alert. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of lavender or vanilla flavor fragrances toward driving performance. Ten human subjects were tested using the driving simulator in three different conditions; driving with vanilla, lavender flavor fragrance and driving without fragrance. A questionnaire was distributed to examine the emotion states of the driver after driving the simulator. Our results indicate that fragrance did not affect the speed reduction. The emotions of the drivers were calm due to the presence of the fragrance

    This paper examines how exotic cuisines become the mechanism glue different ethnic groups together and enhanced the quality of community life in the so-called Golden Triangle in the Longgang area of Taoyuan, Taiwan. The Golden Triangle Longgang has been famous for its cultural diversities, especially the numbers of the exotic restaurants, including Burma cuisines, Hakka cuisines, Taiwanese cuisines, Chinese Mainlanders’ cuisines, Islamic cuisines and so on. In this paper, the research particularly investigates the relationships between the Burma cuisines and the quality of community life within the Burma-Chinese ethnic groups.

    Family Decision Making on Cultural Heritage

    AkhirPekan@MuseumNasional or Weekend at Museum Nasional is a Sunday family 15-20-minute theatre program organized by a museum consultancy, @Museum, in collaboration with Teater Koma for Indonesia's National Museum.  As a follow-up research, it zooms in on the decision-making process which leads to family participation in this cultural heritage appreciation program. Semi-structured interviews in this preliminary qualitative research to families attending the program show that aspiration, prior experience and the roles of mothers contributes to the process. It is hoped that this writing would provide feedbacks to other similar initiatives which promote the appreciation of cultural heritage

    Considering the causes of environmental degradation are mainly due to anthropogenic activities, this study aims to explore the need of indicating the social-psychological factors among Malaysians in qualifying the level of public environmental awareness and behaviour. A nationwide study has been conducted to examine environmental awareness and behaviour from 13 States and three Federal Territories. The result demonstrated current level of environmental awareness and behaviour among Malaysians, as according to the four categories; water pollution, air pollution, waste management and climate change

    Privately-Owned Public Space for Public Use

    The study investigated the using of privately-owned public space (POPS) in two gated communities in Medan, Indonesia. The activities of people during the weekend and the physical setting of the POPS were recorded through observation and visual survey. The research found that most of the visitors were not satisfied with the public open space, but they used it intensively. The study indicated that the better quality public open space was more livable compared to the poor quality. Since the visitors in the two public open spaces were mostly people who live outside the gated community, the private-owned public space contributed to public life
