    Assessing decarbonization: a comparison of the green sacrifice ratio for China and India

    Carbon mitigation and net-zero targets have an important place on the political agenda for all countries. Countries have been seeking to decouple economic growth and carbon emissions to achieve decarbonization. However, there is a cost of the decarbonization of economies, which can be called as Green Sacrifice Ratio (GSR), and this is critical for developing countries because they have been in the growing stage. By considering the critical role of GSR in achieving net-zero emissions by decarbonizing economies, the study comparatively examines how much environmental quality should be sacrificed for per capita economic growth in China and India. In line with this purpose, the study uses the Fourier-Shin cointegration test and various time series estimators with Fourier approximations for the period from 1989/Q1 to 2022/Q4. Estimation results are as follows: (i) all variables follow the non-stationary process, (ii) the long-run relationship exists between variables, and (iii) Estimation results show that GSR is 0.65% for China and 0.78% for India. Therefore, China and India sacrifice a significant amount of environmental quality for a 1% increase in per capita income level. Also, the ecological cost of increasing economic welfare in India is higher with regard to China. Besides, the results are robust according to the alternative method. Thus, the study recommends that both Chinese and Indian policymakers should revise the economic expansion structure with green growth strategies to prevent irreversible environmental degradation due to higher economic growth

    The effect of ruminative thoughts on sexuality in obese women

    Objectives: Ruminative thoughts play a significant role in the pathogenesis of disorders such as anxiety and depression. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of ruminative thoughts on the sexual functions of obese and non-obese women. Methods: This case-control study included individuals sexually active women aged 18 and above, and under 46 years, who applied to the university hospital’s obesity clinic in 2021 and had not previously been diagnosed with the patient and/or their partner with organic and/or psychiatric diseases that could cause sexual dysfunction and/or being under treatment, as well as pregnancy. The participants consisted of pre-obese and obese individuals (n = 59), as well as non-obese individuals (n = 63). The Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire, Female Sexual Function Index, and Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale were administered to the voluntary participants. Using univariate and multivariate statistical models, the effects of obesity and volatile thought styles on the sexual experiences of obese and non-obese women were evaluated. Results: The analyses conducted revealed that the scores of ruminative thoughts were not affected by obesity. After adjusting for age, it was observed that Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale scores were higher in pre-obese and obese women (p<0.05). In the multiple models created, Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale scores were negatively influenced by obesity, whereas Female Sexual Function Index scores were adversely affected by ruminative thought styles. Conclusions: In this study, while addressing sexual health for both preobese, obese, and non-obese women, the importance of considering predisposing psychological factors is emphasized. It emphasizes the importance of ruminative thoughts and obesity on sexual functioning in women. Psychological well-being and body image perception emerge as critical elements in this relationship

    Renewable electricity generation and carbon emissions in leading European countries: Daily-based disaggregate evidence by nonlinear approaches

    This study examines the role of renewable electricity generation (EG) on environmental quality in the top 10 carbon dioxide (CO2) emitting European countries by considering ongoing energy crisis. By doing so, the research considers the environmental effect of renewable EG (such as hydro, solar, and wind) at a disaggregated level from January 2, 2019 to August 31, 2023, using the wavelet coherence (WC), quantile-on-quantile (QQ) regression and Granger causality in quantiles (GQ) methods. The outcomes demonstrate that (i) hydro, solar, and wind EG have a strong dependence on CO2 emissions, while effects vary across times and frequencies; (ii) hydro EG reduces CO2 emissions in Germany, Belgium, and Austria; (iii) at higher quantiles, solar EG curbs CO2 emissions in Italy, Spain, Romania, and Austria; (iv) at higher quantiles, wind EG lowers CO2 emissions in all countries except Bulgaria; (v) hydro, solar, and wind EG generally have a causal effect on CO2 emissions across all quantiles except for some lower (0.05–0.10), middle (0.40–0.60), and higher (0.90–0.95) quantiles. The results thus show that CO2 emissions in European countries are strongly influenced by renewable EG as a function of time, frequency, and quantile. In line with the outcomes, the study suggests continuing to rely on hydro EG for Germany, solar EG for Italy and Austria, and wind EG for all other countries as the best EG alternative for achieving a carbon-neutral economy. In this way, countries can benefit from renewable EG and at the same time contribute to their energy security
