Factors affecting the return of spontaneous circulation in cardiac arrest patients
The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in cardiac arrest patients who underwent quality chest compressions as recommended by international guidelines. In this retrospective observational study, the data of nontraumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients (n = 784) brought by an ambulance to emergency between January 2018 and December 2019 were extracted from the validated hospital automation system. About 452 patients met inclusion criteria. All eligible patients for analysis were treated with an automatic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) device for chest compression.. Significance threshold for P-value was < 0.05. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors affecting mortality. 61.7% (n = 279) of the study population was male and 65.0% of patients (n = 294) had OHCA. 88 patients (19.5%) had a shockable rhythm and were defibrillated. There was a 0.5-fold increase in mortality rate in patients with thrombocyte count < 199 × 109/L (OR: 0.482, 95% CI: 0.280–0.828) and CPR duration longer than 42 minutes led to a 6.2-fold increase in the probability of ROSC (OR: 6.232, 95% CI: 3.551–10.936) (P < .05). There is no clear consensus on the ideal resuscitation duration; however, our study suggests that it should last at least 42 minutes
Determination of weight loss methods and effects among wrestlers before an official championship
Introduction: It is known that combat athletes frequently lose weight before a competition. This study aimed to determine the weight loss methods before an official championship and the effects of these weight loss methods on the performance of wrestlers. Method: The sample of the study consisted of 350 competitive wrestlers. The “Athlete Weight Loss Methodology and Effects Scale” and personal information form were used as data collection tools in the study. In the data analysis, independent samples T-test, One-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis were used in addition to descriptive statistics. Results: Wrestlers generally reported dieting by restricting fatty (89.1%) and carbohydrate (83.4%) foods. It was observed that they preferred jogging with a raincoat (89.1%) and/or using the sauna (79.7%) as a weight loss method. Wrestlers also reported that they performed weight loss, although at a low level, by using ergogenic aids such as laxatives (31.7%) and/or diuretic pills (28.0%). They were observed to experience physiological effects such as muscle cramps (72.9%), injury (71.1%), and/or difficulty breathing (60.9%), as well as psychological effects such as feeling extremely tired (81.7%), stress (79.7%), decreased performance (78.6%) and/or extremely irritability (71.4%). It was determined that there was no difference between the weight loss methods and effects of the wrestlers according to their gender and wrestling style (p > 0.05). On the other hand, it was determined that the diet level of U20 wrestlers was higher than U17 (p < 0.05) and Senior wrestlers and that U17 and U20 wrestlers were exposed to higher levels of physiological and psychological effects than Senior wrestlers (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that wrestlers preferred methods such as restricting food and fluids, using a sauna, and jogging with a raincoat to lose weight. It is necessary to prevent young wrestlers from losing weight before the competition. Thus, it is possible to prevent wrestlers in their development period (U17 and U20) from being exposed to physiological and psychological effects caused by losing weight
Regional variations in psoriatic arthritis: Insights from a nationwide multicenter analysis in Türkiye
Objectives: The study aimed to investigate and compare clinical features, disease activity, and the overall disease burden among psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients across seven distinct geographic regions in Türkiye. Patients and methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study involving 1,134 PsA patients from 25 referral centers across seven regions was conducted. Demographic and clinical characteristics, comorbidities, joint involvement, extra-articular manifestations, and disease activity measures were evaluated across regions. Results: A total of 1134 PsA patients from seven different geographic regions in Türkiye participated in this study. The highest number of participants was from the Marmara region (n=409), with subsequent representation from Central Anatolia (n=370), Aegean (n=139), Mediterranean (n=60), Black Sea (n=60), Eastern Anatolia (n=60), and Southeastern Anatolia (n=36) regions. There were significant variations in demographic profile, including age, body mass index, age of disease onset, educational status, comorbidities, and family history of both psoriasis and PsA. Clinical features, such as enthesitis, dactylitis, uveitis, and joint involvement, demonstrated significant variation across regions. Additionally, disease activity measures, including pain, patient and physician global assessments, acute phase reactants, disease activity indices, quality of life, and functional status, displayed considerable regional differences. Conclusion: This nationwide study revealed substantial regional diversity in demographic data, clinical characteristics, disease activity, and quality of life among PsA patients in Türkiye. These findings stress the need to customize treatment approaches to address regional needs and to conduct further research to uncover reasons for disparities. It is crucial to enhance region-specific approaches to improve patient care and outcomes for PsA
Objective: Children with autism (CwA) often face chal lenges in social participation, which can impact their ability to form re lationships, engage in daily living activities, and develop important life skills. The impact of these challenges is not limited to the CwA alone but also extends to their parents or caregivers who assume the primary responsibility for their care. Our study aims to examine the relation ship between the social participation of CwA and the quality of life (QoL) of parents and caregiver burden. Material and Methods: 32 caregivers with children aged 5-12 years with autism spectrum disor der were included in the study. Children’s social participation was eval uated with the Child and Adolescent Participation Scale (CASP). Parents’ QoL was assessed with the WHOQOL-BREF and caregiver burden with the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS). Results: A moderate negative significant correlation was found between CASP and ZCBS (r=-0.593**, p<0.01), a low moderate positive significant correlation between CASP and WHOQOL-BREF (r=0.374*, p<0.05). Conclusion: The findings of our study highlight the importance of pro moting social participation in CwA, not only for the benefit of the child but also for the well-being of the parents and the family as a whole. In this context, occupational therapy interventions to be applied to increase the social participation of CwA are very important in reducing the bur den of care and increasing the QoL of parents
