Developing the Public Speaking Anxiety Scale (PSAS) for Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Dysfunctional Emotion Regulation in the Effect of Irrational Beliefs on Public Speaking Anxiety

    No full text
Public speaking anxiety, which is closely related to social anxiety, is a crucial factor in the development of adolescents. It affects their ability to regulate their emotions and irrational beliefs, which in turn shapes their relationships and academic success. The purpose of this present study is two-fold: (a) to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool for public speaking anxiety for adolescents, and (b) to determine the mediating role of dysfunctional emotion regulation on the effect of irrational beliefs on public speaking anxiety. To achieve this, data were collected through face-to-face interviews from a total of 1231 adolescent students, including 642 girls (age, X = 14.96) and 589 boys (X = 14.99), aged between 12 and 17 years old in five stages. Data collection was based on the Public Speaking Anxiety Scale (PSAS) (developed in the current study), the Irrational Beliefs Scale (IBS), the Regulation of Emotions Questionnaire (REQ) and the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A). Data were analysed through SPSS, AMOS, JAMOVI, G-POWER and Microsoft Excel programmes. This study concludes that the Public Speaking Anxiety Scale (PSAS) has demonstrated both valid and reliable psychometric properties. The findings of this study further reveal that internal dysfunctional emotion regulation plays a partial mediating role in the effect of irrational beliefs on public speaking anxiety, and that external dysfunctional emotion regulation, on the contrary, did not have a mediating role in the effect of irrational beliefs on public speaking anxiety

This study examines the depiction of the devil in Arabic literature, focusing on Al-Jahiz’s perspective on this character as a symbol rich in philosophical and ethical meanings. The image of the devil in Arabic literature goes beyond the traditional perception of him as a symbol of absolute evil. The research explores how Al-Jahiz employs this character, blending humor with deep analysis. Al-Jahiz presents various names and classifications of devils, highlighting differences based on their strength and abilities. He also discusses the stereotypical image of the devil, which has been ingrained in people's minds despite never being seen, citing the Qur'an as evidence that human aversion to the devil is an innate trait. The article also explores the idea of human-devil marriage, referencing Qur'anic interpretations and narratives that support this notion, suggesting that interaction between humans and devils may, in some cases, lead to such unions. Additionally, the research examines the relationship between the devil and animals, particularly dogs. Al-Jahiz reviews the widespread belief that black dogs are associated with devils, yet he opposes this view, instead considering wolves to be more closely linked to cunning and deception. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, analyzing Al-Jahiz’s texts and connecting them to the intellectual and religious contexts that shaped his perspective. The article highlights how the devil in Arabic literature is not merely a symbol of evil but a tool for understanding the psychological and moral complexities that humans face

Enterocytozoon bieneusi (E. bieneusi) is an obligate intracellular, spore-forming parasite that can infect both vertebrate and invertebrate hosts and accounts for 90% of global human microsporidiosis cases. The increasing number of wild boars in rural and urban areas of Türkiye makes it necessary to investigate their potential as carriers of zoonotic pathogens that can be transmitted to humans. In this study, a total of 24 fecal samples collected from three different regions of Hatay province were analyzed using a nested PCR method to investigate the presence of E. bieneusi in wild boars (Sus scrofa) for the first time in Türkiye. All samples detected as negative. These findings may be due to factors such as regional ecological conditions, limited sample size, or low local prevalence. Although no positive samples were detected, these negative findings are still valuable for understanding regional distribution patterns and for guiding future surveillance efforts, particularly within the context of wildlife epidemiology. In conclusion, this is the first study to investigate the molecular screening of E. bieneusi in wild boars in Türkiye. These findings highlight the need for larger and more comprehensive epidemiological studies in different regions of Türkiye, including humans, domestic animals, wildlife species, and environmental samples

The Role of Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) in the Evaluation of Renal Functions in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Aim: Early diagnosis of renal dysfunction has clinical and prognostic importance for liver cirrhosis. The disadvantages are that creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) are dependent on age and muscle mass in demonstrating renal dysfunction. There is a need for parameters that can detect renal dysfunction early in cirrhotic patients. Our aim was to investigate the sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of serum Neutrophil Gelatinase Associated Lipocalin (NGAL), serum creatinine and BUN levels against glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in the evaluation of renal function in Child A and Child B liver cirrhosis patients. Methods: This study was conducted in a total of 84 patients with Child A or Child B liver cirrhosis who were admitted to the gastroenterology clinic between 2009 and 2010. The study was based on retrospective review of the patients' files. Clinical and laboratory parameters were recorded. Results: We found that serum NGAL 45.8%, creatinine 88.5% and BUN 84.2% positive predictive value in defining GFR for all patients in Child A and B stages. In our study, we concluded that a NGAL value of 114.17 ng/ml and above has 68.75% sensitivity and 50% specificity in indicating glomerular filtration rate. The diagnostic utility was 47.4% and it was not found significant (p= 0.053).Conclusions: It has been shown that serum creatinine values are more sensitive and specific than BUN and a new marker, NGAL, in terms of predicting the changes that may occur in the GFR of patients in Child A and B stages.</p
