    Comprehensive Study of the Properties of Engineered Cementitious Composites Incorporating Synthetic Wollastonite Microfibers

    In this study, synthetic wollastonite microfibers (SWMs) with a dense acicular particle structure and a very high aspect ratio were developed by using a three-stage production method consisting of the mechanochemical, hydrothermal autoclave and sintering processes. The maximum aspect ratio of SWMs was 44 & ratio;1, which is a needle-like particle with the highest aspect ratio. The effects of SWMs on the workability and rheological, mechanical, durable, and dimensionally stable properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) were investigated using many tests for each property. For this purpose, SWMs were substituted with cement-fly ash (C-FA) at 3%, 6%, and 9%. The study found that replacing C-FA with 6% SWMs can significantly enhance the compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, flexural strength, and ductility of ECCs. Substituting 6% C-FA with SWMs not only enhanced the mechanical properties but also led to improved durability and dimensional stability. In particular, in the freeze-thaw test, which is a long-term durability test (300 freeze-thaw cycles), SWMs provided significant performance improvement in terms of % mass loss, ultrasonic pulse velocity, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity, durability factor, and residual flexural performance. In addition, the 180-day drying shrinkage and 30-day average crack width of ECC were reduced approximately 105 mu epsilon and 16 mu m, respectively. Moreover, the test results were supported by microstructural analysis. This comprehensive study indicates that SWMs have the ability to be used in ECCs to improve their properties

    The Essential Oil Components in Lemon Verbena Significantly Vary According to Diurnal Variations and Drying Process

    This study investigated the effects of harvesting time, dried, and or fresh leaf on essential oil components in lemon verbena (Lippia citriodora H.B.K.). Essential oil was obtained from fresh and dried leaves harvested at different times using the hydro-distillation method. The essential oil components were determined using a GC-MS device. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to the essential oil components determined at all harvesting times (HT), on dry or fresh (DF) leaves. Except for Myrcene and Guaiol, the essential oil content of Limonene, ß-Citral, α-Citral, Caryophyllene oxide, ß-Guaiene, Geranyl acetate, Prenylacetone, Linalool, Verbenol, Humulene, Curcumene, Carvone, Nerolidol, Spathulenol, and α-Cadinol were significantly affected by the HT×DF interactions (P<0.05). It was found that especially for the cosmetic industry, Limonene should be obtained from fresh leaves harvested at 12(pm), β-Citral from fresh leaves harvested at 12(am), and α-Citral from dry leaves harvested at 6(pm), which are active compounds derived from the volatile oil of lemon verbena. According to the PCA results obtained from the study, we can clearly state that harvesting time has differently influenced each active compound in the essential oil of lemon verbena.     Gülhatmi Genotiplerinde Ekim Öncesi Tohum Uygulamalarının Fide Kalitesine Etkisi

    Bu çalışma gülhatmi (Alcea rosea L.) türüne ait doğadan toplanan 3 farklı genotip üzerinde ekim öncesi tohum uygulamalarının fide kalitesine etkisinin belirlenmesi amacıyla 2022 yılında Hatay Mustafa Kemal Üniversitesi araştırma seralarında yürütülmüştür. Çalışmada tohumlar uygulama yapılmadan (kontrol, U0) ve tohumlardaki dormansinin giderilmesi amacıyla arkalı önlü tek delme (U6) ve arkalı önlü tek delme uygulamasının beraberinde giberellik asit (U7), Ferula sakız ekstraktı (U8), saf su (U9), potasyum nitrat (U10) uygulamaları da yapılarak ekilmiştir. Ekim işleminden itibaren 40. ve 180. günlerde fide ölçümleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Fide özelliklerinde ilk ölçüm değerlerinde gövde çapı, yaprak eni ve boyu açısından en iyi sonuçlar Genotip 1’de U10 uygulamasından elde edilmiştir. En fazla gerçek yaprak ve fide gelişimi gösteren uygulama ise Genotip 1’de U0 uygulaması olmuştur. Son ölçümler değerlendirildiğinde ise fide boyu, gövde çapı, yaprak eni değeri ve nispi nem içeriği en yüksek Genotip 1’de U0 uygulamasından, yaprak yaş ağırlığı, kardeşlenme oranı, kardeşlenme sayısı, yaprak boyu ve en fazla gerçek yaprak sayısı Genotip 1’de U9 uygulamasından elde edilmiştir. Yaprak kuru ağırlığı en yüksek Genotip 3’te U8 grubundan elde edilmiştir. Tüm bulgular birlikte değerlendirildiğinde kullanılan genotipler için U9 ve U10 uygulamalarının fide gelişimi üzerine diğer uygulamalara kıyasla daha iyi sonuçlar verdiği gözlemlenmiştir.This study contains hollyhock (Alcea rosea L.) species collected from nature on 3 different genotypes collected from nature, in order to determine the effect of pre-planting seed treatments on seedling quality, in 2022 Hatay Mustafa Kemal University research greenhouses. In the study, control and in order to eliminate dormancy in the seeds, a back-to-front single piercing (U6) and a back-to-front single piercing were applied along with gibberellic acid (U7), Ferula (U8), water (U9), potassium nitrate (U10). Treatments were also made and planted. Seedling measurements were carried out on the 40th and 180th days after planting. The best results in terms of stem diameter, leaf width and length in the first measured values of seedling characteristics were obtained from the U10 treatment in Genotype 1. The treatment that showed the highest true leaf and seedling development was the U0 and U9 treatment. When the final measurements were evaluated were highest values in Genotype 1, U0 treatment, The highest leaf dry weight was obtained from the U8 group in Genotype 3. When all the findings were evaluated together, it was observed that U9, U10 treatments had significant effects on seedling quality for the genotypes used

    A quasi-experimental research on developing students’ life skills through purposeful leisure time activities

    This study investigated the efficacy of a camp-based intervention in enhancing students’ life skills and subjective wellbeing. This research examined how student-centered and interactive learning models, implemented through camp activities, contributed to the development of participants’ life skills. Using a quasi-experimental methodology with a pretest/post-test control group design (2 × 2 factorial design), the study employed experimental and control conditions to establish validity. Life skills and subjective wellbeing data were collected through face-to-face administration at consistent time points, before and after the intervention. The study involved 46 students assigned to the experimental group and 42 students assigned to the control group, all of whom were enrolled in the Faculty of Sports Sciences. Statistical analysis employed a mixed-design two-way ANOVA to assess between-group differences and temporal changes, while predictive relationships were examined through correlation and regression analyses. The results demonstrated statistically significant positive changes in both life skills and subjective wellbeing measures among experimental participants compared to their control group counterparts who did not participate in the camp intervention. This finding supports the idea that organized camps can serve as catalysts for improving subjective wellbeing and the development of life skills. As anticipated, enhanced life skill development corresponded to increased subjective wellbeing. The study further determined that interactive structures implemented within the camp framework effectively supported both life skills development and subjective wellbeing enhancement. Camp-based interventions may be recommended as effective tools for developing competencies within organizational human resources, including stress management, problem solving, interpersonal communication, decision-making, and creative and critical thinking

    Antimicrobial Susceptibilities, Its Resistance Mechanisms, Virulence Determinants and Phylogenetic Groups of<i> Escherichia</i><i> coli</i> Isolated From Different Clinical Animal Samples

    Escherichia coli is a versatile agent, as some are commensals, normally living in the intestines of both humans and animals, while others are pathogenically responsible for a wide variety of intestinal and extra-intestinal infections including urinary tract infections (UTIs), meningitis, septicemia, bovine mastitis and colibacillosis in poultry. The present study aims to determine the antimicrobial susceptibilities, its underlying genetic resistance mechanisms, distribution of phylogroups, and virulence determinants of 42 E. coli isolates from different clinical sources of animals. Our results have revealed that phylogroup A1 (42.9%) and B1 (40.5%) were the most prevalent phylogenetic groups with different virulence profiles and varying incidence of virulence determinants. High rates of resistance to different categories of antimicrobial agents with high rate of MDR (59.5%). Phylogenetic analysis showcased remarkable diversity among the tested isolates, with no discernible clustering based on antimicrobial resistance or virulence patterns. Our research has demonstrated the significant phylogenetic diversity of E. coli isolated from different clinical samples. E. coli isolates are endowed with various virulence factors that contribute to their pathogenesis in animals. The elevated rates of antimicrobial resistance and emergence of MDR mirror the trend detected globally in recent years
