Role of Basti in Lumbar Disc Disorders with special reference to Gridhrasi
Lumbar Disc Disorders (LDDs) are significant cause of disability worldwide with a high prevalence among individuals engaged in sedentary or physically demanding occupations. Among these, Lumbar Disc Herniation (LDH) is closely related to Gridhrasi, a condition described in Ayurveda with symptoms resembling sciatica. Gridhrasi is primarily associated with aggravated Vata Dosha, leading to radiating pain, stiffness, and neurological deficits. The findings of the current study shows that the prevalence of having disc degeneration (either HN, AF or ND) in the age group 15-30 in asymptomatic individuals of Indian ethnicity was 56%. Ayurveda offers a comprehensive approach to managing LDD with Basti (medicated enema) being a key therapeutic intervention. Basti, especially Kati Basti, Anuvasana Basti, and Kashaya Basti, helps pacify aggravated Vata, reduce inflammation, & promote nerve regeneration. This paper explores the role of Basti in the management of Lumbar Disc Disorders with special reference to Gridhrasi, examining its efficacy through classical texts and contemporary research. Integrating Ayurvedic treatments like Basti with modern rehabilitative strategies may offer a holistic and sustainable solution for LDD patients. The pharmacological properties of key Basti yoga’s such as Erandamooladi, Niruha Basti, Dhanwantaram Mrudhupaka, Sahacharaadi Mrudhupaka, Vaitharana Basti, Dashamooladi Basti, Ksheerabala, etc., were analysed for their neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Clinical evidence supports the efficacy of therapies like Karma Basti and Yoga Basti in reducing pain and inflammation, improving nerve conduction, stabilizing spinal structure, regenerating nerves. Basti therapy serves as safe and effective intervention, offers potential alternative or adjunct to conventional treatments with long term effect
A Critical Analysis of Ahiphena as Upavisha through its Neurotoxicity
Ahiphen (opium) also called as Poppy Plant that grows everywhere in India. In ancient times, it was thought to be like foam coming from the mouth of the snake. It contains Codeine, Papaverine and Morphine. All these chemicals, particularly morphine, depress the cortex, respiratory and cough center of medulla. In Ayurveda Ahiphen comes under the Upvisha. In these articles I am going to deal with the mechanism of action, stages of opium poisoning, differential diagnosis and treatment of Ahiphen poisoning related to nervous system. It mainly affects the neurotoxic cerebral sominiferous. This drug is also found to be used in different dosage forms, both for internal administration and external application. This paper is an attempt to review the different yoga’s containing Ahiphena highlighting its therapeutic utility. There are four varieties of Ahiphena (Papaver somniferum) as white, black, yellow and colored
Review of Murvadi Agad in managing Gara Visha and Digestive Disorders
Agad Yogas indicated not only for managing acute and chronic poisoning but also for treating various diseases caused by toxins entering the body through different routes. In today’s world, individuals are frequently exposed to both directly and indirectly harmful toxins and chemicals, which can lead to serious health issues and disorders. The Agad (antitoxic formulations) mentioned in the Samhitas are highly effective in counteracting the harmful effects of these toxins and chemicals, and they also play a crucial role in managing life-threatening poisoning conditions. Murvadi Agad is a unique and highly effective herbal formulation specifically prescribed for treating Gara Visha and Agni Vikara (digestive disorders). It is a compound preparation that is explained in the context of “Garopahatpavaka”, a condition resulting from impaired Agni caused by the administration of Gara Visha. This formulation is a unique contribution from Ashtanga Hridaya and is not found in other classical texts. Murvadi Agad is typically administered with Anupanas like Ushana Jala (warm water), Takra (buttermilk), Mastu (sour milk), or Amla Rasa Dravyas (sour substances), which help enhance its effectiveness and absorption. In the modern world, Gara Visha conditions can arise from the consumption of toxic substances such as animal excreta, harmful medicines, Viruddha Aushadhi (incompatible medicines), and adulterated food items. With the prevalence of junk food, food coloring agents, preservatives, and packed food products, many of these substances can be considered Gara Visha in today\u27s context. These toxins can lead to Agni Vikara, manifesting as disorders such as Sthoulya (obesity), Arsha (hemorrhoids), Atisara (diarrhea), Udara Rogas (abdominal diseases), and other digestive issues. When administered with the proper Anupanas, Murvadi Agad can effectively address these conditions, restoring balance to Agni and promoting digestive health

A Bird’s Eye View on Ashtanga Sangraha
Ayurveda has passed down through the centuries as a complete healing system, evolving to meet the needs of the time, and yet remaining committed to its core principles. These fundamental principles are laid down in Ayurveda Samhithas which are the store houses of information. Brihatrayees (the greater trio) are the three treatises occupying the best positions for the authority and authentication with respect to compilation and presentation of Ayurveda in its best form. Ashtanga Sangraha is an authoritative text on the science of medicine in ancient India. The name of the text itself conveys its meaning clearly. It is a collection of information of the Ashtangas - the eight branches of Ayurveda in one single text providing preference to Kayachikitsa. The glory of this book is that it confines only to the three pillars of medical science i.e., Hetu (etiology), Linga (symptomatology), and Oushada (therapeutics). The text is composed in such a way as to be suitable to the present age. Acharya Vagbhata created a great revelation in the medical field through his treatise. This review article focuses on unique contribution of Acharya Vagbhata in Ashtanga Sangraha for the development of Ayurveda
