    Comprehensive Nutritional Assessment Using BMI, MUAC, and Skin-fold Thickness among Indian Rural School Children Aged 5-14 Years

    Background: Malnutrition remains a critical public health issue in rural India, impacting the growth and development of children. This study evaluates the nutritional status of rural school-going children aged 5–14 years in Supedi Village, Gujarat, using anthropometric measures such as Body Mass Index (BMI), Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC), and Skin Fold Thickness. These measures provide insights into both under nutrition and over nutrition trends, along with gender and age-related disparities. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted on 401 children (181 boys, 220 girls) from two primary schools. Anthropometric data were collected through BMI, MUAC, and Skin Fold Thickness, using standardized tools and protocols. BMI categories were based on WHO growth standards, and MUAC and Skin Fold Thickness measurements were analysed for malnutrition and adiposity levels. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate associations between age, gender, and nutritional parameters. Results: The study found 53.12% of children undernourished by BMI, with girls (60%) more affected than boys (51.38%). Over nutrition was observed in 9.23% of children, predominantly boys (13.81%). MUAC analysis showed 23.69% moderate and 2% severe malnutrition, with boys exhibiting higher moderate malnutrition. Skin Fold Thickness revealed high adiposity in 10.22% of children, especially girls (15.45%), while low adiposity was prevalent in 60.35%, mainly among boys (78.45%). Significant associations were noted between nutritional status and demographic factors (p<0.05).     The efficacy of Ayurvedic treatment in the management of Varicose Veins - A Case Report

    Varicose veins are dilated, bulging, tortuous superficial veins, measuring at least 3 mm in diameter. The estimated prevalence of varicose veins in the United States is ~ 15% in men and 30% in women. In this case report, a female patient presented with the complaint of prominence of veins in bilateral lower limbs, pain, swelling in calf region and heaviness in bilateral lower limbs. The case was diagnosed as Varicose Veins. In Ayurveda classics, symptoms of varicose veins resemble with both Sira Granthi and Siragata Vata. The patient was advised for Shodhana chikitsa (~detoxification) by Raktamokshana (~bloodletting) followed by Shamana chikitsa with Kaishora Guggulu, Manjisthadi Kwatha, Saraswatarishta, Avipattikara Churna and a combination of drugs including Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Sariva and Amalki Churna, Pravala Bhasma, Godanti Bhasma and Mandoora Bhasma. After the completion of treatment, the patient had significant relief in the symptoms. This case report highlights the efficacy of Ayurvedic treatment in managing Varicose Veins

    Background: Pushkarmoola (Inula Racemosa Hook. F) is very important drugs described in various classical text of Ayurveda. It is mainly indicated in Jwara, Shwasa, Kasa, Gulma, Hridaroga, Shoola, etc. Materials & Methods: All the available Ayurvedic Nighantu were referred for the collection of data regarding Pushkarmoola (Inula Racemosa Hook. F). Observations and Results: The different synonyms of Pushkarmoola (Inula Racemosa Hook. F) like Paushkara, Kashmira, Padmapatra, Pushkarhvayam, Padmabeeja, Viram etc. were observed. Properties of Pushkarmoola (Inula Racemosa Hook. F) like Tikta-Rasa, Ushna-Veerya, Katu-Vipaka, Kaphavatahara Karma and actions of Pushkarmoola (Inula Racemosa Hook. F) like Shwasa, Kasa, Hridaroga, Hikka, Parshwashoola, Jwara etc were described in different Nighantu. Discussion: The collection of various information of the Pushkarmoola (Inula Racemosa Hook. F) from 27 Nighantu and compare its variations by their synonyms, properties, and actions. Conclusion: The present analysis shows that different types of synonyms, properties and functions described in different periods of Ayurvedic Nighantu can be used to identify and validate medicinal plants.     A Clinical Study on the Effect of Rasanjanadi ‎ Aschyotana ‎‎ (Eye drops) in the Management of Netra‎‎ Abhishyanda with special reference to Infective Conjunctivitis

    Background: Conjunctivitis (Netra Abhishyanda), a common ocular disorder, is characterised by inflammation of the conjunctiva presenting with redness, burning, discharge, and tearing. In Ayurveda, it is classified under Agantuja Vyadhi and regarded as a Sankramika Roga (infectious disease), with Abhishyanda described as the root cause of most eye disorders. Objectives: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Rasanjanadi Aschyotana (Ayurvedic eye drops) in the management of Netra Abhishyanda (infective conjunctivitis) and compare its effect with standard allopathic treatment. Materials and Methods: A randomised clinical trial was conducted on 30 patients, divided into two groups. Group I received Rasanjanadi Aschyotana, while Group II received Ofloxacin eye drops for 15 days. Assessments were done on days 3, 7, and 10, based on subjective and objective scoring of redness, burning, lacrimation, photophobia, and other symptoms. Statistical analysis was performed using paired t-test with significance at p<0.05. Results: Both groups showed statistically significant improvement. Group II demonstrated higher percentage relief across most symptoms. Group I showed good relief in burning sensation (80.12%), redness (67%), and lid oedema (56.02%) without adverse effects. Conclusion: Rasanjanadi Aschyotana is a safe, economical, and moderately effective therapy for infective conjunctivitis, aligning with Ayurvedic principles. Further large-scale trials with microbial culture studies are recommended for standardisation

    A Clinical Evaluation of Savarnakara Lepa and Bakuchi Churna in Shvitra Roga w.s.r. to Vitiligo

    Background: Skin tone has biological, cosmetic, and societal significance. An acquired disorder known as vitiligo occurs when melanocytes are lacking in the afflicted area. Approximately 1% of people worldwide have vitiligo. Despite being uncommon and non-communicable, vitiligo patients may have psychological issues including despair in addition to cosmetic disfigurement. The cause of the skin\u27s melanocytes\u27 disappearance is unclear. Due to its correlation with other autoimmune diseases, the presence of antimelanin antibodies, and lymphocytic infiltration in early lesions, vitiligo has been associated with an autoimmune etiology. All skin conditions are categorized under the Ayurvedic term "kustha," which is further subdivided into two categories: "Mahakustha" and "Kshudrarkustha." Shvitra has been discussed separately. Intervention and duration: The study registered 30 patients for the clinical trial with signs and symptoms, Twak Vaivarnyama, Kandu, Roma Vivarnata and fulfilled the inclusion criteria were chosen for the study. Assessment was done on the 15th day, 30th and 45th day and 90th day. Results: Using the proper statistical techniques, such as calculating the mean, standard deviation (SD), and standard error of the mean (SE), the study\u27s data were examined. Conclusion: This clinical study of Savarnakara Lepa, Bakuchi Churna showed significant results in Shvitra

    Ayurvedic management of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Ulcerative Growth on Mandibular Region: A Case Study

    Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common form of oral cancer.  Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) involving the mandibular region have the lowest survival rates. In spite of conventional therapy includes surgical excision, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the morbidity and mortality are not declined till. There are several terms in Ayurveda like Shotha, Granthi, Arbuda, and Dushta Vrana, which somewhat share clinical similarities with Cancer. By using holistic approach for diagnostic and management, Ayurveda have a potential to manage any known unknown diseases including OSCC. OSCC characterized by chronic, non-healing wounds with or without pain, abnormal discharge, discoloration, and foul odour, somewhat resembling Dushta Vrana. Known case of OSCC with ulcerative growth on mandibular region presented with clinical features like pus discharge, pain at right buccal mucosa, inflammatory swelling , constipation and general body weakness visited Cancer Unit treated with medicines like Kanchanar Chhal, Nimba Chhal, Brihat Manjishtadi Kashaya Churna, Gomutra,  Jaharamohara Pishti, Kaharva Pishti, Tapyadi Lauh, Vaikranth Bhasm, Swarna Bhasm, Heerak Bhasm , Drakshavaleh, Tab Cytocruel AT, Syrup M Liv, Ras Manikya, Shuddha Gandhak, Trivang Bhasm , Jathyadi Ghrt , Panchavalkal Kwath and Yashtimadhu Churn Phant. The ulcerative growth has significantly decreased in size with reduced pain, swelling and pus discharge. Thus, OSCC with ulcerative growth on Mandibular region can be managed with Ayurvedic standalone successfully, though there is a need of further clinical study

    An In-Vitro evaluation of Anilari Rasa for the assessment of its Neuroprotective Effect in Neuronal Cells (IMR-32 Cell Line)

    Background: Conditions which affect the way the nervous system works are known as neurological disorders. Both the central and peripheral nerve systems are involved in this. Neurological disorders cause physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural symptoms like pain, confusion, mood changes and/or co-ordination difficulties. Neurological disorders do not have any direct Ayurvedic reference, yet can be correlated with 80 types of Nanatmaja Vat vyadhis due to its signs and symptoms. Aim: This experimentation is aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of herbo‑mineral formulation Anilari rasa in an in vitro model. Materials and Methods: Anilari Rasa was prepared according to the method described in Rasayogasagar and analytical testing of Anilari Rasa was performed. IMR 32 Neuroblastoma cell line obtained from human (NCCS Pune) was maintained at 37°C in 5% CO2 with 95% relative humidity in MEM (Invitrogen, USA) supplemented with 5% foetal calf serum, penicillin (50 U/ml), and streptomycin (50 ug/ml). Once the confluence growth was achieved, cells were used in experiments. Result and Conclusion: Anilari Rasa was in powder form hence all the parameter required for testing of Churna like Total Ash value, loss on drying, acid insoluble ash, loss on ignition was tested. There is no free elemental copper in the preparation. Hence, analytical study shows that Anilari Rasa is of good quality. Based on the observation and results it concluded that Anilari Rasa is non-toxic to normal cells (i.e. PBMC) in Lower concentration <50µg/ml. XTT shows a non-significant difference in the cell viability of the PBMC after the treatment with Anilari Rasa at low concentration (50μg/mL). From the results, we can conclude that Anilari Rasa can be used for neurodegenerative disorder in low concentration

    Trataka Karma and Eye Health: Ancient Practice, Modern Relevance

    Trataka Karma is one of the six purification techniques (Shatkarmas) mentioned in Yogic texts and is closely related to Ayurvedic ideas about protecting the eyes. Ancient Indian thinkers saw the eyes as very delicate, precious organs governed by Alochaka Pitta and nourished by the dhatus. They recommended practices to prevent disorders caused by excessive use or strain. This article brings together references from the Vedas, Upanishads, Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita and other texts to explain how Trataka developed historically and conceptually. It also highlights how these ideas match today’s knowledge about eye health, stress management, and concentration. We find that Trataka works on both body and mind, strengthening the eyes, cleaning excess Kapha, stimulating Alochaka Pitta, and improving focus. In our current world of screens and visual strain, it remains a low-cost, safe, and accessible practice to protect vision and mental well-being
