Exploring Panchkarma Treatment Modalities for Managing Motor Neuron Disease and ALS - A Review
Introduction: Motor Neuron Disease (MND), particularly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), represents a complex and progressive neurodegenerative condition characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in the nervous system. These neurons, crucial for voluntary muscle activity, deteriorate progressively, leading to muscle weakness, atrophy and eventual paralysis. ALS, the most common form of MND, affects both upper and lower motor neurons, resulting in a combination of symptoms such as muscle twitching (fasciculations), spasticity and significant weakness. MND incidence is approximately 2 / 100,000 people annually, with ALS typically presenting in most cases. Methods: The pathophysiology of ALS involves a cascade of cellular and molecular events including the accumulation of neurofilaments, the formation of protein aggregates and mitochondrial dysfunction, all contributing to the death of motor neurons. Despite extensive research, the aetiology remains largely unclear, though genetic and environmental factors are considered contributors. Result & Conclusion: In contrast, Ayurveda views MND/ALS through the lens of Vatavyadhi, a disorder primarily involving Vata Dosha. It correlates MND/ALS with Dhatukshayajanya Sarvangavata, implicating the depletion of Dhatu and an imbalance in the Dosha. By addressing imbalances in the Dosha, Dhatu and Srotas, Ayurveda offers a holistic framework that may complement conventional treatments, improve patient outcomes, and enhance quality of life. Future research is needed to validate the efficacy of these approaches and establish integrative care models that merge traditional and modern medical practices
Conceptual Review of Yakrit Vikara (Liver Disorders) with special reference to Raktavaha Srotas (Blood Vascular System)
Introduction: Yakrit is considered, one of the Koshtanga (Visceral organ) and the Moolasthana (Site of forming, controlling, regulating, purifying, reserving, detoxifying, and amalgamating, target) of Raktavaha Srotas. Hence, a Samvaya (Integrated interrelationship) seems to exist between Rakta and Yakrit. The involvement of Pitta in pathology should also be considered as Rakta and Pitta (Asraya) and (Ashrayibhava). Accha Pitta (Bile) is derived from Yakrit. The description of the digestion process mentioned in Ayurveda shows that Yakrit plays an important role in the digestive process. Every Srotas has its own Moolasthana, or root. Chakrapani described the Moolasthana of Srotas as Prabhava Sthana, which signifies the anatomical seat of respective Srotas, the major seat of pathological alterations, and diagnostic value. Aims and Objectives: To analyse the concept of Yakrit Vikara concerning Raktavaha Srotas. Materials and Methods: Ayurveda classical textbooks, related books of contemporary science, various journals, publications, articles, etc in support of Yakrit vikara are reviewed and related information is collected and analysed. Discussion: Yakrit Roga is caused by the vitiation of Rasa and Rakta dhatu. Mandagni and Vishamagni cause the formation of \u27Ama\u27 that leads to Srotodushti further causing Vikara (disease/disorder). Dhatu is formed and nourished by the Srotas with the help of Dosha. Srotas are responsible for the formation of new cells and tissues in our body. Tissue results in organ formation. Thus, the paper highlights Yakrit as an organ related to Raktavaha Srotas and various Yakrit Vikara that may manifest due to Raktavaha Srotodushti
Stri Prakriti and Reproductive Health: A Theoretical Integration of Ayurvedic Typology and Genetic Tendencies
Ayurveda’s foundational concept of Prakriti - the inherent biological constitution unique to each individual - forms the cornerstone of personalized healthcare. Within this framework, Stri Prakriti specifically denotes the female constitution, encompassing distinct physical, physiological, and psychological characteristics that significantly influence reproductive health. This theoretical article critically examines classical Ayurvedic perspectives on Stri Prakriti, elucidating their relevance to menstrual regulation, fertility, and pregnancy outcomes. It further integrates contemporary advances in genetics and epigenetics to provide a nuanced understanding of the biological variability observed among women. By correlating Dosha predominance with hormonal milieu and gene expression patterns, the article proposes a novel model that bridges ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern biomedical science. This synthesis underscores the potential of constitutional assessment as a predictive and preventive tool for optimizing individualized reproductive healthcare. Such an integrative approach holds promise for enhancing personalized strategies in women’s health, fostering improved clinical outcomes, and advancing the dialogue between traditional knowledge and contemporary scientific paradigms
Extensor Indicis Brevis Replacing Extensor Indicis Bilaterally - A Case Report and Surgical Considerations
The anatomical variation while dissecting a particular region may go unrecognised. It becomes the responsibility of anatomist to identify and report such variations as they greatly influence diagnostic accuracy, surgical approaches and therapeutic outcomes. During the routine dissection of extensor aspect of forearm and dorsum of the hand, the extensor indices, a deeper muscle of extensor compartment which typically guide the extension of index finger was found to be absent bilaterally. In its place, a smaller accessory muscle present on the dorsum of the hand found, identified to be extensor indices brevis bilaterally. This muscle may be present in 2% to 3% population which may be mistaken for pathology of dorsum of the hand. These findings underscore the importance of vigilance during anatomical study and caution during tendon reconstruction procedures to avoid misdiagnosis or surgical complications
Therapeutic Potential of Bombax ceiba Linn. - A Review
Shalmali, botanically identified as Bombax ceiba Linn., a robust long-lived tree found abundantly growing across country, has been in the focus of pharmacotherapeutic applications in Ayurveda since time immemorial. Almost every plant part like root, stem bark, leaves, flowers, Gum exudate have been described with different type of pharmacological properties and therapeutic potential in classical texts of Ayurveda to treat a number of diseases. According to Ayurveda, it has stimulant, astringent, hemostatic, aphrodisiac, diuretic, antidiarrheal, emetic, demulcent, anti-dysenteric, and antipyretic properties. Numerous pharmacological properties of the Shalmali have been shown in both in vitro and in vivo research, including analgesic, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-acne, antimicrobial, hypotensive, hypolipidemic, and antihyperglycemic effects. Management of Nimesha (Blepharospasm) through Ayurveda - A Case Study
Blepharospasm is defined as focal dystonia characterized by involuntary, repetitive and sustained contractions of the extraocular muscles leading to excessive blinking or persistent eyelid closure. This article explores the effective Ayurvedic management of essential blepharospasm in a 52-year-old female patient with a 2-year history of the condition. Treatments such as Nasya, Tarpana, Annalepa, Netra Pichu and internal medication with regular follow-ups were scheduled to monitor the disease progression. There was significant improvement in involuntary movement of the eyelid following the treatment, with a marked reduction in both the frequency and intensity of spasm
Role of Tikta Rasa in the sustained intervention of Lifestyle Disorders - A Review article
The WHO classifies Lifestyle Disorders as Non-communicable diseases which include Diabetes mellitus, Obesity, Cardiovascular disease, Hypertension, Alzheimer\u27s and Cancer. 74% of fatalities worldwide are attributed to NCDs each year. In Charak Samhita Sutrasthan Chapter 25, described Agrya Dravyas in which the usage of Ek Rasa Abyasa is deemed Daurbalyakar. This means consumption of one particular taste/food group has been responsible to create laxness in the body. The exponential rise in NCDs might be due to overconsumption of Ek Rasa (eg: Madhur Rasa i.e., Guru Bhojhana), Agni Mandya, Sedentary lifestyle, Smoking, Alcohol consumption. They’re called Santarpanjanya disorders in Ayurveda. These disorders have presence of Ama as a contributing factor, which makes the etiology difficult to cure. Tikta Rasa is one such Rasa out of 6 essential Rasas which has the potential to manage lifestyle disorders both on the level of Curative as its a Apatarpanjanya Rasa, by doing Deepana of Agni, Pachana of Ama in the minute Srotases. Preventive by using its beneficial phytonutrients and antioxidant property by including in our Aahar and Dinacharya. This study shows various Tikta Rasa Aahar Varga like Kushmandi, Alabu, Patola, Kunduru, Koshataki, Bimbi, Chichind etc. They’re a potent source of phytonutrients like Vit A, Vit C, Vit B complex and phytochemicals like flavonoids, tannins, saponins which prevent right from Diabetes, Dyslipdemias, Metabolic syndromes upto Cancer. A NCD epidemic is approaching and inevitable hence there’s a need for a sustained intervention to manage these in the long term. Management of Secondary Amenorrhea due to PCOS through Ayurvedic Regime - A Case Study
Background: In the woman of reproductive age group, PCOS is the commonest endocrine disorder which is a complex genetic syndrome characterized by anovulation, amenorrhea or hypomenorrhea, menstrual abnormalities, acne and hirsutism which is due to sedentary lifestyle, eating unhealthy and abnormal sleeping patterns. As per WHO, it impacts 116 million females worldwide as of 2010.[1] In Ayurved, it can be correlated with Nastartava or Anartava which is the symptom of Bandhya Yonivyapada. Symptomatically it can also be correlated with Puspaghani Jataharini mentioned by Acharya Kashyap.
Material and Methods: An unmarried Hindu female patient of 20 years old came to OPD of IAS and R with complaints of amenorrhea since 6 months along with pre-menstrual symptoms like irritability and mood swings etc. She is also having scanty menses since 6 months. Her USG showed polycystic ovaries. PCOS involves Ras, Rakt, and Medo Dusti along with Kapha-Pitta Pradhan Tridosh. Based on Samsprapti, Kapha- Pittahar, Artavajanana and Aampachana Chikitsa was adopted. She was treated with Ayurvedic Sansaman and Sanshodhan Chikitsha for 3 months. Her treatment includes Virechan for Srotoshodhan and oral medications include Chaturbeej Churna, Kanchnar Guggul, Gaandharvahasthadi Kshaya and Gorakhmundi Churna.
Results: Her USG was repeated after the course which was showing normal study. She also got her periods after 2 months of treatment along with relief in her premenstrual symptoms from which she was suffering previously. Now she is having her periods on monthly basis with length of cycle of 28 to 32 days.
Conclusions: Ayurvedic management of PCOS offers a natural and holistic approach to addressing the root causes of this hormonal disorder. By incorporating dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, herbal remedies, and yoga, women with PCOS can experience improved hormonal balance, reduced symptoms, and enhanced overall well-being. Through this study, it is concluded that PCOS can be treated effectively with Ayurveda
Effectiveness of Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) in prevention of Cancer: A Systematic Review
Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) helps prevent cancer through its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It boosts immune function by enhancing natural killer cells and macrophages. Withaferin A in ashwagandha promotes apoptosis in cancer cells without harming normal cells. It inhibits tumour growth by blocking angiogenesis and supports hormonal balance. Ashwagandha also aids DNA protection and repair, reducing cancer risk. The Objective of the study is to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of W. Somnifera in the prevention of cancer, based on evidence from clinical studies. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Databases searched included PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, and SpringerLink. Studies from 2001 to 2023 were screened using specific inclusion/exclusion criteria, focusing on W. somnifera effect on cancer-related outcomes. The risk of bias used tool is the Cochrane’s revised tool for randomized trials (RoB 2). The systematic review identified six eligible studies that demonstrated various anticancer effects of W. somnifera. This included inhibition of tumor growth, suppression of metastasis, enhancement of chemotherapy tolerance, and improved quality of life. The studies used different preparations of the herb, and the active compounds—particularly Withaferin A and withanone—were shown to induce apoptosis, regulate immune responses, and target cancer pathways effectively. Withania somnifera shows promising anticancer potential, acting through multiple pathways including antioxidant defense, hormonal regulation, and tumor suppression. While preclinical and early clinical findings are encouraging, more large-scale human trials are needed to establish its safety, efficacy, and clinical utility in cancer prevention and therapy
A Case Study of Ayurvedic management for Vipadika (Palmoplantar Psoriasis)
Kushta (Skin Diseases) is the general term used in Ayurveda to refer to all skin conditions. Acharya Charaka has listed eighteen different kinds of Kustha (skin diseases). Eleven of them are Kshudra Kushta, while rest of them are Maha Kustha. Vipadika is the one among in Kshudra Kustha which is compared with Palmoplantar Psoriasis. It is a chronic, multifactorial, inflammatory, complicated illness characterised by an increase in the turnover rate of epidermal cells and hyperproliferation of keratinocytes in the epidermis. This skin disease hampers day-to-day activity of patient due to associated symptoms and depresses patients because of cosmetic issues. This case concerned a 27-year-old woman who was experiencing itching on the plantar aspect of Right foot, cracks across the soles, and pain while walking. No prior history of any systemic disease was present. No surgery had been performed on the patient. The symptoms like burning and pain subsided in the initial visit. With subsequent follow-ups, the cracks, itching, and pain during walking decreased. One session of Laghu Virechana and a single session of Raktmokshan were scheduled. The entire course of treatment lasted roughly ten months. During treatment patient was irregular on initial visits though, the patient experienced relief from major parameters with the given treatment regimen
