    Effects of sprinkler irrigation on McDaniel and European red mites in apple orchards

    Overtree sprinkler irrigation of apple trees was effective in keeping populations of McDaniel spider mites, <i>Tetranychus mcdanieli</i>, below the economic level. Sprinkling had less effect on European red mites, <i>Panonychus ulmi</i>, because the females moved to the undersides of the leaves and continued egglaying during the sprinkling and because the eggs, unlike those of <i>T. mcdanieli</i>, were not dislodged by the sprinkling. The effectiveness may be increased by timing the sprinkling to coincide with the first appearance of the immature stages and by increasing the size of the droplets

    The western cherry fruit fly, <i>Rhagoletis indifferens</i> Curran, was first recorded in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia in 1968, and trapping during 1969 established the presence of this species in most of the cherry growing districts in the region. <i>R. indifferens</i> emerges as an adult in early June, and flies continue to appear until mid-July. The principal host of this species, <i>Prunus emarginata</i> Dough., was not found in the Okanagan, and no flies were found on <i>Prunus virginiana demissa</i> (Nutt.) which has been reported as a host. A comparison of lures to trap the flies showed that ammonium carbonate traps were more efficient than yellow sticky boards or glycine-lye bait pans. The sticky boards, however, seem to be adequate for determining the presence of cherry fruit flies. In addition to <i>R. indifferens</i>, 5 other <i>Rhagoletis</i> were trapped in commercial cherry orchards. The common species were <i>R. zephyria</i> Snow, <i>R. ribicola</i> Doane, and <i>R. berberis</i> Curran. <i>R. fausta</i> (Osten Sacken) and <i>R. tabellaria</i> (Fitch) were trapped in very low numhers in a relatively few locations

    To protect potatoes from damage by larvae of the tuber flea beetle, <i>Epitrix tuberis</i> Gent., in silt and sandy clay loam soils, carbofuran (Furadan), fensulfothion (Dasanit), and fonofos (Dyfonate) were applied as 12-inch band or broadcast treatments, rotovated to a depth of 4 inches and rows of potatoes planted in the treated areas. Three supplementary drenches were applied at about 2-week intervals to include the emergence period of the second generation adults. In silt loam the untreated and fonofos band-treated plots produced 31 and 40% marketable tubers, respectively, against 92 to 100% for the other treatments. In sandy loam the comparable figures were 0.5 and 4.5% against 10 to 97%. Residues in the tubers ranged from none detected in fonofos treatments to 0.23 ppm of fensufothion and its sulfone in potatoes from the band treatment

    The effect of root weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on yield of five strawberry cultivars in British Columbia

    To determine the effect of root weevils on strawberry yield, 5 strawberry cultivars: Totem, Shuksan, Northwest, Cheam and BC-25 were infested in the field with 2 or 8 adults per plant of 1 of 4 species of root weevils: the black vine weevil, <i>Otiorhynchus sulcatus</i> (F.); the strawberry root weevil, <i>O. ovatus</i> L.; the obscure strawberry root weevil, <i>Sciopithes obscurus</i> Horn; and the woods weevil <i>Nemocestes incomptus</i> (Horn). There were no significant differences in yield between weevil infestations in the first cropping season. In the second year plants in the plot infested with 8 <i>O. sulcatus</i> per plant produced significantly less fruit than those in all other infestations. Within this plot Totem and Cheam produced significantly more fruit than the other cultivars. In the third year most of the other weevil-infested plots produced significantly less fruit than the uninfested plot. The plot with 2 <i>N. incomptus</i> per plant was the most severely damaged in the third season. The cultivars Totem and Cheam were usually the most tolerant to all weevils. Northwest and BC-25 were the most susceptible to all weevils. The tolerance of Totem to attack by the main root weevil species, <i>O. sulcatus</i>, is probably related to the ability of the plant to produce and regenerate a large supply of roots

    Natural enemies of budworms, Choristoneura spp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), on Douglas-fir near Yale, British Columbia, in 1977

    Two species of <i>Choristoneura</i> were reared from an infestation on Douglas fir in the Yale-Spuzzum area in 1977: <i>occidentalis</i> Free, and an apparently undescribed species. Larvae with parasites averaged 47.6 percent and increased from 14.5 percent in larvae collected early in May to 74 percent in those collected early in July. Pupae with parasitism were 52 percent. Three well-known species of budworm parasites comprised 85 percent of the parasites reared. Eight other species of Lepidoptera were reared from the Douglas fir. One of these, <i>Dioryctria pseudotsugella</i> Munroe, becomes a predator on budworm prepupae and pupae when all the foodplant foliage has been consumed by budworms

    In 1974 and 1976, Douglas-fir cones from 51 clones and 150 clones, respectively, were collected and determinations were made of the percentage of seed damaged by the cone insects <i>Barbara colfaxiana</i>, <i>Contarinia oregonensis</i>, <i>C. washingtonensis<i/> and <i>Megastigmus spermotrophus</i>. Although statistically significant differences in percentage of damaged seeds were detected among clones, these differences were not great enough to be of practical importance
