Selecting sampling points for larvae of western spruce budworm, Choristoneura occidentalis (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), from survey records in British Columbia
Annual counts of larvae of western spruce bud worm, <i>Choristoneura occidentolis</i> Free., from beating samples of Douglas-fir (<i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> Mirb.) Franco) were analyzed over 30 years. Sampling points which most frequently yielded high budworm counts and also had detectable defoliation were analyzed and compared with results from all the samples. When the purpose of sampling was to predict populations, the 98 points sampled since 1949 could be reduced to 17, thus enabling a significant reduction in the cost of data collection

The lettuce aphid, <i>Nasonovia ribisnigri</i> (Mosley), is recorded for the first time as a serious pest of lettuce in the Cloverdale area of British Columbia
Oviposition of Culex pipiens in water at different temperatures
At 20C air temperature, female <i>Culex pipiens</i> L. laid the greatest number of egg rafts at water temperatures between 20 and 25C. They laid very few at 15 or 35C even when given no alternative site. The possibility is discussed of manipulating temperature in a mosquito control programme
Siphonaptera from mammals in Alaska. Supplement II. Southeastern Alaska
Eleven taxa are treated in this first annotated check list of mammal fleas of Alaska east of longitude 141° west. Twelve new records of six taxa are listed including the first record of <i>Myodopsylla gentilis</i> J & R for southeastern Alaska. Associations with 12 species of wild mammals, the Norway rat, dog, and man are listed. The zoogeographic position of southeastern Alaska as a pathway and a destination of two Vancouverian taxa and seven Vancouverian-Cordilleran taxa is related to Alaska west of 141° and to British Columbia. Ranges of <i>Monopsyllus ciliatus protinus</i> (Jordan) and possibly <i>Hystrichopsylla dippiei spinata</i> Holland were extended to Baranof Island by transplants of red squirrels and martens, respectively
Tetrastichus galactopus (Hym.: Eulophidae), a hyperparasite of Apantees rubecula and A. glomeratus (Hym.: Braconidae) in North America
The biology of <i>Tetrastichus galactopus</i>, a hyperparasite of <i>Apanteles rubecula</i> and <i>A. glomeratus</i> in North America, is reviewed. The female hyperparasite attacks its hosts while they are larvae in their primary host, <i>Pieris rapae</i>. although free-living cocoons of <i>A. glomeratus</i> may also be attacked. In Vancouver, where <i>A. rubecula</i> is the only available host, <i>T. galactopus</i> is active from July through September and probably overwinters as a pupa or adult within the host cocoon. The significance of hyperparasitism to the success of biological control efforts using <i>Apanteles</i> is discussed
On the relationship between the European red mite and apple leaf chlorophvll
Chlorophyll content of Delicious and McIntosh apple leaves is shown to be uncorrelated with numbers of the European red mite (ERM). Hypotheses regarding movement by the ERM are examined. It is concluded that there is no evidence that the ERM seeks out the least damaged leaves, nor can leaf damage be attributed to the mites present on the leaves. Movement unrelated to leaf quality explains the lack of correlation
Hosts & distribution of Rocky Mountain wood ticks (Dermacentor andersoni) at a tick focus in British Columbia rangeland
In a study of a Rocky Mountain wood tick (RMWT) population, <i>Eutamias amoenus</i> and <i>Peromyscus maniculatus</i> were the hosts most frequently trapped. Of these <i>E. amoenus</i> carried the greater number of immature RMWT. RMWT were also found in decreasing order of abundance on the following larger rodents: <i>Marmota flaviventris</i>, <i>Neotoma cinerea</i>, and <i>Tamiasciurus hudsonicus</i>. Of 3 areas sampled in and near the tick focus in 1967, most of the ticks were found on the uppermost steep and rocky, shrubby area, while the fewest were taken on a less steep grassy slope with few rocks. Sherman traps were the most efficient of 7 types tested in 1967 for capturing small mammals.In both 1967 and 1968, larvae were most abundant on rodents in July, and scarce or absent from September to June. In 1968, trapping rodents from March to October revealed a major increase in nymph numbers in April and May, and a smaller rise in August and early September. In 1967, CO, as dry ice attracted only a few adult and nymphal ticks, when placed on and near the trap lines and rodent burrows. The number of unfed adult ticks/100 m<sup>2</sup>, recorded by flagging on and near the trap lines, declined each year in 1968 to 1970. In addition to RMWT, a few <i>Ixodes kingi</i> and <i>I. marmotae</i> were collected from mustelids and rodents
