Some influences of area and pest management on apple mite populations in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia
Biweekly leaf samples were taken from commercial apple orchards in four main growing areas, from north to south of the Okanagan Valley, each about 70 km apart, during the full growing season of 1983. Both phytophagous and predacious mite distribution and abundance were influenced by the area and four management practices. Unsprayed orchards had few mites, whereas regularly sprayed orchards tended to have larger mite populations, the species composition and abundance of which varied with area. The numbers of some species of phytophagous mites appeared to be related to the species and abundance of predacious mites present in a given orchard
Chionea macnabeana Alexander, a micropterous crane fly (Diptera: Tipulidae) new to Canada
The flightless crane fly, <i>Chionea macnabeana</i> Alexander, is reported from Canada for the first time: several specimens were collected in Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir forest in the North Cascade Mountains of Manning Park, British Columbia
Effect of anti-aggregative pheromones 3,2-mch and trans-verbenol on Dendroctonus rufipennis attacks on spruce stumps
Anti-aggregative pheromones 3,2-MCH and 3,2-MCH with trans-verbenol were released from open vials enclosed in perforated cans attached to both sides of 50 winter-cut spruce stumps which normally attract spruce beetles (<i>Dendroctonus rufipennis</i>). Although significantly fewer attacks occurred on treated than on untreated stumps, the attack density was not sufficiently reduced to be of practical value in controlling spruce beetle reproduction in this host material. There was no significant difference in reduction of beetle attacks between the 3,2-MCH and the 3,2-MCH with trans∑verbenol treatments

Efficacy of insecticides against tuber flea beetles, wireworms and aphids in potatoes
Soil-incorporated and foliar-applied insecticides, alone and in combination, were tested in silt loam to control tuber flea beetle, <i>Epitrix tuberis </i>Gent., the green peach aphid, <i>Myzus persicae</i> (Sulz.) and the wireworm <i>Agriotes obscurus </i>(L.) Most soil-incorporated band treatments did not give adequate protection from tuber flea beetles. However, supplemental foliar applications, July 15 and 30 and August 15, reduced the percentage unmarketable tubers to 13% under a heavy infestation in 1977 and to 0% in a lighter infestation in 1978. Fonofos, broadcast and soil-incorporated, gave the best control of wireworms and of a light infestation of tuber flea beetles. Methamidophos was the best aphicid
Validation and refinement of a plant indicator model for grand fir mortality by the fir engraver
A previously developed plant indicator model that estimates grand fir mortality by the fir engraver was tested in 7 grand fir stands. The observed and predicted mortality levels were similar in 5 of the test stands for trees killed during a 3-year period. A better statistical fit was achieved by refining the model and its parameters based on a combined set of data from the original and test stands

Chemical control of balsam wooly aphid (Homoptera: Adelgidae) on seedlings of Abies amabilis
Assessment was made of the effectiveness of four insecticides for eradicating <i>Adelges piceae</i> (Ratz.) from Abies seedlings. Seedlings with overwintering immature aphids were top dipped in the insecticides in fall or spring (before or after cold storage), while those with mature, egg-laying aphids were treated in spring. The overwintering immature aphids were completely killed by all of the insecticides and it was recommended that any one of the following treatments would provide sanitation of <i>Abies</i> from aphid during this stage: 1.0% propoxur suspension; 2.0% carbaryl suspension: 2.0% Insecticidal Soap solution; 0.5% permethrin emulsion. Treatment of mature aphids was less effective due to relative tolerance of bwa eggs and it was recommended that treatment during this stage of the aphid be avoided
Effect of high-density frontalin baiting on attack distribution of Dendroctonus rufipennis in spruce plots
Intensive baiting with frontalure (33% frontalin and 66% alpha-pinene) was found to affect the distribution of spruce beetles, <i>Dendroctonus rufipennis</i> (Kirby), among available hosts. In treated plots, 23% to 63% of the beetle attacks were found in standing trees potentially capable of resisting gallery establishment, compared with less than 1% in check plots. All suitable freshly downed trees were attacked in treated and check plots but the attack densities were significantly lower in two of the three treated plots as compared with their checks. Frontalure capsules placed on the ground at various distances from standing trees failed to induce attack
