Influence of stream sediments on distribution of macrobenthos
Studies were conducted in the laboratory and field to determine the substrate relationships of five species of stream insects representing the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Diptera. Various combinations of pebble and sand were tested in the presence or absence of cobbles. Substrates with cobble were generally preferred over substrates without cobble. The preference for cobble generally increased as the sediments around the cobble decreased in size. Substrates with unembedded cobble were slightly preferred over half-embedded cobble: completely embedded cobble in fine sand proved unacceptable to most species. Three types of substrate-distribution patterns are recognized: stream insects which inhabit substrate surfaces: interstices: and both substrate surfaces and interstices
Parasitoids of the western spruce budworm, Choristoneura occidentalis (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in British Columbia, 1977-78
In 1977, the western spruce budworm, <i>Choristoneura occidentalis</i> Free., caused serious defoliation of Douglas-fir (<i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> [Mirb.] Franco) over 246,000 hectares, the largest area ever infested by the budworm in British Columbia. The budworm was surveyed in 1977 and 1978, as the population declined; 25 parasitoid species were found. Early-stage larval parasitism averaged 40%, late-stage 20%, and pupal 16% (1977) and 25% (1978). Total parasitism was 61% (1977) and 69% (1978); in 1977, 17% of the egg masses were attacked. Disease incidence was very low. The sudden decline of the budworm in 1978 over the entire infestation, regardless of parasitoid populations, suggested that parasitism was not a major factor. The widespread occurrence of parasitoids throughout the infestation suggests that they would not have been seriously affected overall by pesticide applications on limited areas
Mortality of spruce beetle broods in bolts submerged in water
Six weeks of continuous submersion in water of spruce bolts containing larvae and young adults of the spruce beetle resulted in complete mortality. We estimated that 22 days of continuous submersion would be required to kill 50% of the brood. Brood development ceased in the submerged bolts even though water temperature, which increased from 13.3°C to 17.8°C during the experiments, was well above the larval development threshold (6.1°C)
An annotated checklist of the caddisflies (Trichoptera) of SE Alaska
An annotated checklist of the caddisflies (Trichoptera) of southeast Alaska is presented. The list contains 11 families, including 74 named, and 5 new species, 44 of which are new for the region. The Family Limnephilidae includes 38 species and Family Rhyacophilidae 14. The annotations cover locations, tvpes of habitats and months of capture.This paper brings together the few previous records of caddisflies (Trichoptera) collected from southeast Alaska (Banks 1900: Denning 1964, 1970: Ellis 1978a, 1978b: Yamamoto and Wiggins 1964) and the results of my recent studies there. The list contains 74 species, 44 of which are new for the region, This is the first attempt to collect and identify Trichoptera on a wide basis in southeast Alaska. Although many new records are included, we still know only about 60% -70% of the caddisfly fauna. Many species are known from a single adult specimen or by larvae only. Undoubtedly, future collecting will add many species to the present list

Courtship and mating behavior of Megastigmus pinus Parfitt (Hymenoptera: Torymidae)
The courtship and mating behavior of <i>Megastigmus pinus</i> Parfitt was observed in insect cages and under a dissecting microscope in petri dishes. Courtship had 6 components: a premounting rocking performance by the male; mounting by the male to a dorsal riding position on the female; antennation and abdominal and wing movement by the male; a series of forward lurches by the male; signaling of receptivity by the female, and subsequent movement of the male to position for copulation. The average durations of mounting and copulation were 6.76 min and 23.5 sec, respectively. Short courtship and copulation times may reduce the risk of predation
Attraction of male Fumibotys fumalis to females of the species
Biological and behavioral studies show that female <i>Fumibotys fumalis</i> (Guenée) attract males of their species. Males responded to females between 11 p.m, and 3 a.m. and in greatest numbers between 12 p.m. and 1 a.m. Females were attractive 0.5 days after adult emergence and at least to the seventh day after emergence. Females were not attractive to males the evening following the night of mating
Comparison of honey bee queens overwintered individually and in groups
Productivity of honey bee queens, as measured by area of sealed worker brood and net weight of colonies, was generally higher with queens overwintered in 2-frame nuclei, than with queens overwintered in a group. Poor acceptance and supercedure of group overwintered queens suggest that this method of storage is not yet acceptable for commercial use. Survival of the nucleus queens was low in outdoor 2-frame units during the winter, but improved with an indoor system. Overwintering queens indoors in 2-frame nuclei and outdoors in 3-5 frame nuclei with supplemental feeding of carbohydrate in late winter should provide a source of queens which could partially fulfill market demands in spring
