    Numbers of Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby) and Thanasimus undatulus Say at pheromone-baited poisoned and unpoisoned trees

    Four times as many spruce beetles, <i>Dendroctonus rufipennis<i> (Kirby), were killed at spruce trees (<i>Picea engelmannii</i> Parry and <i>Picea glauca</i> (Moench) Voss) baited with frontalin and sprayed with insecticide than at trees baited but unsprayed. Many clerid predators, <i>Thanasimus undulatus</i> Say, were also killed at the baited and sprayed trees. Their numbers were correlated with those of killed spruce beetles. Other correlations show that sprayed and unsprayed trees were exposed to the same attacking spruce beetle population and that predation on the spruce beetles was occurring

    Six insecticides at various rates and formulations, applied by three methods over three seasons, were evaluated for controlling the European wireworm. <i>Agriotes obscurus</i> L. in corn planted in silt loam. The insecticides were in granular form, applied as a broadcast, in a band, or in the seed furrow. Most of the materials, rates and methods gave good protection. Insecticide applied in the furrow was placed either in contact with the seed, or just ahead of it and mixed with soil. When it was in contact with the seed the yield was slightly lower, indicating some phytotoxicity. The furrow methods were the most economical in material and labour

    Morphology of alimentary and reproductive tracts of the rodent bot fly, Cuterebra tenebrosa (Diptera: Cuterebridae)

    The internal reproductive and alimentary structures of <i>Cuterebra tenebrosa</i> Coquillett were studied and compared to other calypterate flies. Well defined mouth parts are present. Paired lingual salivary glands extend horizontally almost to the abdomen: however, labial salivary glands were not found. The alimentary canal is complete in female flies, whereas males lack a crop. Females have three spherical spermathecae opening in to the upper portion of the genital chamber. Male reproductive structures are similar to those in other flies. Tracheal air sacs fill one-third to one-half of the abdomen

    Another olethreutine, Phaneta latens (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), attracted to the sex pheromone of the codling moth

    The olethreutine, <i>Phaneta latens</i> (Heinrich), was attracted to the pheromone of the codling moth <i>Cydia pomonella</i> (L.) , (E,E)-8,lO-dodecadien-l-ol. Field trapping records indicated that flights of <i>P. latens</i> occurred between May 12 and June 20, 1978, with the greatest trap catches in late May. In 1979 flights occurred from May 15 to July 2, and the peak catches dispersed throughout May and June. Responses of <i>P. latens</i> to the pheromone was significantly less at concentrations of 0.25 mg/ trap than at 1.0 and 2,0 mg/trap; the latter two were equally attractive

    Improved control of the western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens (Diptera: Tephritidae), based on area-wide monitoring

    A monitoring program, using spherical wooden traps of Saturn Yellow color, was tested on an area-wide basis for control of the western cherry fruit fly, <i>Rhagoletis indifferens</i> Curran. All calendar sprays were eliminated and substituted by sprays applied only after the first female flies were caught on any of 8 traps/ acre. This approach resulted in elimination of all spray treatments for <i>R. indifferens</i> control in 4 of 10 study orchards during the 1977 season. The remaining study orchards required one fewer spray treatment. In 1978, 1 of 14 study orchards required 4 fewer treatments. Among the remaining orchards, 3 sprays were eliminated in 2 orchards, 2 sprays in 4 orchards and 1 spray in 6 orchards. It is estimated that the average saving in spray costs alone amounted to about 31.00/acrein1977and31.00/ acre in 1977 and 26.00 in 1978. The overall reduction in number of sprays applied was about one-half during 2 seasons. The orchard blocks under the fly monitoring program had about the same level of infestation in the fruit as the calendar treatment blocks

    Population dynamics of fruitflies in British Columbia

    Fluctuations in the populations of three species of the genus <i>Drosophila</i> were studied for fourteen months at an isolated fruitdump in the southern Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. The fruitdump was considered to provide ideal conditions for overwintering since it contained vast quantities of food and generated abundant heat. However, only <i>D. hydei</i> overwintered, whereas <i>D. pseudoobscura</i> and <i>D. melanogaster</i> did not. <i>D. hydei</i> seemed to occupy the most desirable location on the fruitdump, to the exclusion of the other species. None of the three species oversummered at the dump. The question of maintenance of <i>D. pseudoobscura</i> and <i>D. melanogaster</i> populations is discussed
