    No full text
Ana Montenegro was a Brazilian activist nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. Affiliated with the Communist Party of Brazil since 1945, she was a candidate for state deputy in 1946 and began her work in the communist and women’s press in 1947. She wrote for the newspapers O Momento, O Momento Feminino, Imprensa Popular and Novos Rumos until 1964, when, for her political actions, she was accused by the military government of subversive activities. Thanks to a network of international female intellectual solidarity, she managed to leave Brazil and go into exile in East Germany, where she worked for the Women’s International Democratic Federation. This article aims to show the work done by Ana Montenegro during her exile, as well as to analyze this network of women’s press that she operated since the 1940s, circulating ideals contrary to U.S. imperialism and dictatorial regimes implemented in Latin America.

    No full text
There were few attempts to prosecute the crimes of Francoism in the 1970s, as the Spanish left had largely accepted the policy of reconciliation promoted since the 1950s, renouncing to demand accountability. However, an international tribunal for the crimes of Francoism was initiated in 1978 by the PCE(m-l). Although the initiative failed on the Peninsula, it continued its activities in exile in France and Switzerland. Based on unpublished sources, the article analyzes the roots, the actors, the objectives, and the posterity of the Tribunal by reinserting it in the global context of transnational mobilizations against human rights violations committed by States since the 1960s, which gave rise to a new type of international tribunal, that of the Russell Tribunal. Thus, it aims to contribute to clarifying on an international scale the debate on the forgetting of Franco’s responsibilities during the Spanish transition to Democracy.

    No full text
This research presents an analysis of the principle of constitutional interpretation according to the Genoa school of legal theory. The hypothesis guiding the research asserts that the ICC is not a single canon, directive, or interpretive operation, but rather a procedure or sequence of activities. We contrast this conjecture with the discourse of Latin American legal scholars to make visible how the ICC is understood in different contexts that share a common legal tradition (civil law) within the transformative constitutional paradigm that characterizes the Latin American experience. Our reconstruction shows that "conformity interpretation" includes several operations of legal interpretation, and that in these operations, the interpreter\u27s commitments play a more significant role than what Latin American jurists seem to admit.

    No full text
The first attestations of the cult of Mithras in Poetovio around the middle of the second century CE, emanating from slaves in the service of the portorium, are analysed by placing them in their context, particularly in terms of topography and social structure. A close examination of the documentation leads to the hypothesis that agents of the portorium introduced the cult of Mithras into Poetovio from Aquileia.

    Democracia radical

    No full text
The aim of this work is to distinguish radical democracy from other currents in contemporary democratic theory and to review some of the authors and approaches that have given shape to this notion in political philosophy over the last few decades. In the first part, I situate the concept of radical democracy in the context of counter-hegemonic struggles that unfold in various geographies following the financial crisis of 2008 and assess our current distance from that period of political effervescence. Subsequently, I outline a brief conceptual history of radical democracy from the 1960s to the 1990s and argue for the need to inscribe radical democracy in the lineage of the modern democratic revolution. I propose, finally, three very basic traits to articulate a minimal definition of the concept. I conclude by highlighting some contradictions facing the project of radicalizing democracy in the second decade of the 21st century.

    No full text
It is usually considered that pre-Aristotelian thought had little interest in economic problems. However, many authors of the end of the 5th or the beginning of the 4th century BC (Ps.-Xenophon, Plato, Xenophon, Phaleas of Chalcedon) pay particular attention to these questions in their political theories or criticisms. While their thoughts diverge in detail, they all share the same distrust of commercial activities and monetary economy. These thinkers introduce a strong and detailed critique of the economic transformations of their time, grounded on shared (aristocratic) political assumptions. In Plato’s works in particular, the importance of economic realities appears in his acerbic criticism of Athenian democracy, as well as in his political constructions of the Republic, of the Critias and the Timaeus, or of the Laws. By alternating general (of this movement of thought at the turn of the 5th century) and circumstantial (because the importance of economy in Plato’s cities unveils itself in apparently minor details) approach, the article hopes to show the fundamental character of the economic reflections in classical Greek thought, before the works of the Stagirite. &nbsp

Los Estoicos y la racionalidad económica

    No full text
When it comes to the discussions of ancient economic thought, the Stoics rarely come to the forefront. By and large, the lack of focus on this Hellenistic philosophical school is understandable: there is no evidence of the Stoics writing treatises entitled ‘oikonomikos’ or similar or, in fact, showing any substantial interest in the matters pertaining to wealth management or money acquisition. There is an extant fragment, however, depicting a debate between Diogenes of Babylon and Antipater of Tarsus in which the latter advocates for the moral permissibility of the behaviour that comes very close to exhibiting economic rationality. In this paper, I analyse this passage and, noting its complex transmission history, I argue that it reveals an engagement with various ideas pertaining to the oikonomia genre. Although some of them resemble the contemporary notion of economic rationality, ultimately, the Stoic argument is embedded in ethical debates with the Peripatetics and it concerns moral value rather than the homo economicus style of reasoning about maximizing gainsCuando se habla del pensamiento económico de la Antigüedad, los estoicos rara vez ocupan un lugar destacado.
