The Student Council organizes a pep rally every two months. This is done to break the monotony of things, increase school spirit, as well as to develop a form of pride within the school. We enjoyed working on the yearbook. It is always rewarding to do the yearbook; we faced many challenges of meeting deadlines, writing copy, finding the right pictures, etc. It wasn’t easy but we made it! Here in Southern Alberta, one of the events everyone looks forward to the most is the arrival of spring, as it has come to mean rebirth and renewal. One morning, when we had our first spring weather, a thought came to me. In students’ lives, the most anticipated event is graduation. The feelings that accompany spring are also associated with graduation. Graduation is the rebirth of the world as a fresh group of young adults rise to the occasion to fill their niche. Of course, we couldn’t have gotten here without the nurturing and love we received from our friends and family. Over the years, they guided us. comforted us. and stood by us. Words can not express our appreciation. But, as we begin to leave the nest, we will not wander far because we have strong roots. _ As graduands. we have many dreams and have set high hopes for ourselves. For the first time, we will realize what it really means to be in a more competitive environment than W.R. Myers High School. To survive, we must take the responsibility to reach deep inside to find the self-motivation to bring about success. Also be responsible for the actions you take to reach your goals. Hard work and determination is the surest way to go. Take care of yourself: you don't want to end up being a lost wanderer. Along the way. have fun. Challenge yourself and experience life. Once your destination has been reached, it’ll make the journey that much more meaningful. The most common complaint among students is "We are never going to use this stuff again." We did learn something that we can use throughout our journey. Don't follow in the footsteps of Willy Loman, watch out for Big Brother, and heed the words of Polonius. With twelve years of knowledge tucked away, the important piece of paper that will be our meal ticket, and with the love of family and friends in our hearts, we are on our way! Best wishes to you all! Mary Vilay Top Left: Ron Martens reaches for new heights. Above: Just a little preparation. Far Left: So sad to leave. Left: Quit laughing. The annual publication of the students of G.S. Lakie Middle School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (2015-16)pdfSo outstanding, in fact, that some may argue it is much more than a school. It is a community. A gathering place. A hub of laughter, tears and boundless energy. A centre academics, athletics and arts. A safe haven where peers know that others will be there for them; staff and students alike aren’t afraid to play; people make an effort to choose a positive attitude; and friends strive to make one another’s day. May this book serve as a collection of memories to help you reflect on what it was that made Lakie so special during your time here. May it help you clear away the fogginess that shrouds the past as you step out of the shadows and into the light of your memories of G.S. Lakie Middle School. radA 8’s Are GREAT!!!!!! HEBREWS13:16ESV In this month of Thanksgiving, it is good to reflect on the miracles that can be worked with your generosity. Remember the little boy with his five loaves and two small fishes? Jesus was able to take that offering, bless them and a great multitude was fed. Jesus still works that miracle today as we give our meager offerings and, with His most gracious blessing, what we have offered makes baskets to overflow, and all we can do is say, "Thank you, Lord", and, "What are these gifts that we can offer?" You were probably thinking of money, but in truth the Lord probably appreciates even more your gifts of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and generosity. It is probably only me that appreciates money most. But whatever we choose to offer from God's goodness to us, they will be returned in a far greater abundance. This is certainly not a Law of Diminishing Returns, it is God's Great Mathematics of Love. In your act of giving, so much more shall be given to you. How often are we paralyzed in the face of the great needs of the world? There are so many in the world that it seems impossible to do enough to make a difference. However, whatever we can do as individuals becomes so much more as we work together. Alone we struggle to make a difference, but together and with God as our guide, nothing is impossible. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. Ephesians 4:2 October Services: Sunday, Oct. 7th - 9:00 am Sunday, Oct. 28th - 9:00 am see yoix li/v c-hurchl Volker Stevin Highways Ltd. Close encounter... A very modest man was in the hospital for a series of tests, the last of which had left his bodily systems extremely upset, to say the least. The man had made several absolutely frantic trips to the washroom, but all were false alarms. Faced with another set of "rumbles", he decided to stay in bed, and avoid another useless panic. Sadly, this was a mistake, and the man suddenly filled his bed with diarrhea. His modesty resulted in embarrassment beyond his ability to maintain rational behaviour. Instead of calling the hospital staff, the man jumped out of bed, gathered up the sheets, and threw them out of the window in his room. Below the window, a security guard was keeping an eye on a local drunk who was out for his afternoon stagger. Sure enough, the bundle of sheets (and more) landed directly on the drunk. Several seconds later, the drunk began yelling, swearing, and swinging his arms violently, until he managed to end up with the sheets in a pile at his feet, with their contents mostly on his clothes. The security guard, who had witnessed the entire incident, and was barely able to contain his laughter, adopted his most stern facial expression, and (maintaining a safe distance) walked up and asked "Just what the heck is going on here?" The drunk, still staring down at the mess on himself and at his feet, replied "You know, I think I just beat the crap out of a ghost." Those Great Friends A husband and wife were having a friendly debate one night, centred on the topic of who had better friends. They each offered a wide variety of anecdotes and stories, but in the end they decided to put it to the test. "Here's what we'll do", the wife suggested. '77/ call your friends, and you call mine. We'll both pretend that the other person hasn't come home yet, and that we are worried. Whoever's friends give the best advice about where to find us clearly know us better and therefore are better." The husband agreed to the game, and they both headed off into separate rooms. When they reconvened a short time later, the husband looked defeated. "Well honey," the husband said, "I think it's pretty clear that you have better friends. Every one of them listed each of your favourite restaurants, salons, shops, and art galleries, and they had phone numbers for each of them. They knew your work hours by heart, your office extension, your boss's name, and even the route you take home." The wife shook her head. "No dear," she replied, "You have better friends." "Why do you say that?" asked the husband. "We//," the wife replied, "most of them said that you’d been at their place and just left, and three of them said you were still there." RA/erei/vd <^ordoi^ Crtwh "If there comes a little thaw, still the air is chill and raw, here and there, a patch of snow, dirtier than the ground below, dribbles down a marshy flood; ankle-deep you stick mud in the meadows while you sing, 'This is Spring'." Christopher Pearce Cranch One can assume that somewhere back in time, the author is a relative of mine. Although from any reading of his life, he was not at all like me. When I was in Boston some years ago, I was at the cemetery that he is buried in, but I didn't know that at Hie time or I would have searched him out. In March, we do get those hints of spring, and can be certain that it is on its way, but probably won't arrive until April. But we do get the blessed assurance that spring is on the way. This year, Easter is late and so is Ash Wednesday. On March 6th, we will gather at the church to have our yearly reminder of the meaning of Lent pressed on to our foreheads. With a smudge of ash, we are reminded that all of life it transitory, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, in the words of the funeral sendee. Each Lent, we get 40 days to prepare us for the miracle of Easter, to prepare ourselves to receive that most precious gift, the gift of eternal life in Christ. In Lent, we are encouraged to give up any vices that we may have. We are also encouraged to devote some of our time to charitable works, or for some, perhaps it is easier and more practical to give a donation. We put away, until Holy Week, the Gloria and any alleluias from our Lenten services. Three things we might try this Lent are: - Daily prayer - our link to God. - Fasting - our link to ourselves. - Alms giving -^our link to our neighbours in need. This doesn't seem too tall an order for any of us. It is a chance to scale back our daily life, to consider the needs of others, the wealth that God has given to each of us, and the need to treat our bodies better. And, so I wish to all a meaningful Lenten season - until we arrive at the commemoration of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and the events of I Ioly Week which follow, culminating in the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Through The Year God be with you in the Springtime When the violets unfold, And the buttercups and cowslips Fill the fields with yellow gold; In the time of apple blossoms, When the happy bluebirds sing, Filling all the world with gladness- God be with you in the Spring. He approached her and asked, ‘Mrs. Jones, do you know me?" She responded, ‘Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.' The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?" She again replied, “Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife, Mr. Williams. Yes, I know him." The defense attorney hearing this, closed his eyes, and attempted to die on the spot. At this point, the judge banged his gavel, and asked both counsellors to approach the bench. In a very quiet voice, the judge then said, “If either of you idiots asks Mrs. Jones if she knows me, I'll find a way to send you both to the electric chair." Richardson Pioneer, PJC Trucking Ltd., The Elevator, Prairie Perfection Catering - . and Milo Seed Cleaning Association . . . ■ ..... . ■ ■ Letter to the Editor bear Editor; I was in the Milo Library recently and bought a copy of Queenstown Memories by Bill Lahd. For anyone familiar with the Queenstown area reading the book will provide a nostalgic trip down memory lane and I highly recommend it. Although our family left Queenstown in 1955,1 still have many indelible memories etched in my mind. For instance, when I hear a meadowlark (they were everywhere), I think of Queenstown. When I drive by the community hall and look north I remember how Railway Avenue once bustled with activity and how elevator row loomed proud and tall. I also remember defending myself and the Kingsmith kids (or so it seemed at the time) from a threatening garter snake with one of Eddie's butcher knives. My parents in particular remained in contact with Queenstown and area residents for many decades and returned to the area quite often. It was as though they remained a part of the community even after being absent for so many years and so when I saw the pictures in Bill's book of the burning of many of the remaining Queenstown buildings in 1971 it was profoundly sad and brought back an emotional reminder of times gone by. I am thankful that Bill Lahd and other members of his family made the considerable effort to preserve Queenstown's history sharing the story of this once dynamic prairie hamlet with grateful readers. Rev. Gordon Cranch Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1 Who are or were some of the cloud of witnesses in your Christian life? Was there a Sunday School teacher somewhere in your childhood that passed on to you a love for the Bible stories of Jesus? Was there a pastor/priest/minister who took a bit of time and tried to show you the path of a Christian life set out before you? Who was important in your early life, shaping you to become the person that you are today? These people are part of the great cloud of witnesses that surround us: those still on earth and helping us day by day to find our way, and the greater cloud of witnesses - saints of every age who perhaps still have a part in our daily life. Not only the great saints like Francis, but the minor saints in our daily life who are there to support and uphold you. They come in all shapes and sizes; they come old and young; all sent by God to give you the message that life is good and you are important to so many others. Although you may not think It, perhaps you are a saint in someone elses life. So remember that your words do have an effect down the ages. If you can remember what some saint in your early life said to you, then you can be sure that the person you are helping will remember your words long after you are gone to join the heavenly cloud of witnesses. Saints are amongst every day, perhaps you are one of them. November Services: Nov 8th- 9:00 am Nov 22nd - 9:00 am See you in church! It was received by Jack Shields of that district from his brother, H. G. Shields, somewhere in Belgium: Sing me to sleep where bullets fall, Let me forget the world and all; Damp is my dugout, cold my feet, Nothing but bull beef and biscuits to eat; Sing me to sleep where bombs explode, And shrapnel bullets are "a la mode;" Over the sand bags helmets you'll find Corpses in front and corpses behind. Chorus----- Far, far from Ypres I want to be, Where Germans snipers can't snipe at me Think of one crouching where the worms creep, Waiting for something to put me to sleep; Sing me to sleep in some old shed, A dozen rat holes around my head, Stretching out upon my water proof, Dodging the rain drops from the roof; Sing me to sleep where camp fires blaze, Full of French bread and "Cafe au Tait" Dreaming of home and nights of rest Somebody's "Overseas" on my breast. The process began with a request from Joanne Monner, Milo Library Manager to have the Milo Art Society replace the existing mural, a 2017 community project sponsored by the library and Alberta Culture Days. The existing mural is quite weathered. It really has taken a village to create the mural: • Milo Ag Society provided the funding for the materials. • Pete Silbemagel supplied the lumber. • Mike Collins designed and built the mural fence. • The fence was primed, base coated and prepped for painting by Art Society members Alison Collins, Michele Tiegen, Joanne Monner, Kathy Catt, Levona Dixon and Tracy Mozill. • Mike Collins, Ian Godkin, Dean Folk, Mike Garant, Ron Gravelie and Loren Mozill moved the fence from Mike’s shop to Don's shop. • Tracy Mozill has been project coordinator responsible for concept, grant request, product research, image research, acquiring materials and reference images, communications (including social media) and scheduling. • Reily Wilson sketched the initial line drawing. • Derek Evernden created the digital image from Reily*s drawing. • Kurt Nelson welded supports to hold the fence. • The digital image was projected onto the fence to create the drawing which was done by Reily Wilson, Marilyn MacArthur, Alison Collins and Tracy Mozill. • The following ten people painted the flower garden mural: Alison Collins, Levona Dixon, Julia Hartigan, Susan Ivers, Jo-Ann Klem, Marilyn MacArthur, Joanne Monner, Tracy Mozill, Kelly Nelson and Reily Wilson. • Alison Collins and Levona Dixon applied the isolation coat. • Don Robbie patiently put up with the group invading his shop over the summer. As of this writing the varnish and installation remain to be done. The mural will be unique in its use of mixed medium. In addition to the painting of a flower garden, it will also include stained glass creations designed, constructed and donated by glass artist Michele Tiegen. The actual artwork painted on the mural took about 280 hours, stained glass 50 hours and another 200+ hours for everything aside from the artwork. It took a village to create the mural and we hope the village will enjoy it for many years to come. As we are faced with an election, I tried to come up with some good Canadian political satire - in print. And failed - miserably. Sure, I can give you a bunch of anti-Justin memes, or news columns, but not much else (particularly regarding the NDP and Greens) that stays out of the genuinely vicious category. At any point in the day, week, or year, there is an abundance of US based humor on a wide variety of Congressmen, Senators, and White House staff and residents. But Canada? Not so much. So, I found and have put forth here an article (from Vanity Fair, but don't hold that against it) on why Canadian humor may be so special, and is unknown as such in the United States. - Cameron Theories abound and conflict and contradict themselves: Theory 1: There are actually funny Canadians alive today, but all nine of them moved to the U.S.A., and once they got here they renounced their Canadian cultural heritage, the way Mick Jagger renounced his English accent. Mike Myers never makes Mountie jokes. Jim Carrey declines to send up the toonie, Canada’s hilarious two-dollar coin. You have to scour Wikipedia to confirm the Canadian-ness of Mort Sahl, David Steinberg, Michael J. Fox, Catherine O'Hara, Seth Rogen, the late John Candy and Phil Hartman, and that guy from that sitcom, you know the one. America absorbed Canadian comedians, or, Canadians would say, Canadian comedians absorbed America.* Lome Michaels, the Darth Vader of American comedy, harvests all the comedic talent in his native land as ruthlessly as Major League Baseball loots the Dominican Republic of shortstops. 'The historic Canadian talent diaspora is actually pretty funny in itself, e g., the guy who wrote the music for the Canadian national anthem and then moved Stateside. Theory 2: A distinctive Canadian humor style never had a chance. The British and the Americans, with their overwhelming cultural power, exhausted all the possibilities of English-language humor long before the messy agglomeration of territories and provinces was confederated into a sovereign entity called Canada, just after the U.S. Civil War.** This left Canadian wits bereft of original material and forced them back on the only potential for risibility left: the condition of being Canadian. Which, given the national psyche, inevitably curdled into a pathetically self-deprecating brand of humor, typified by the following: Q: How do you get 26 Canadians out of a swimming pool? A: Yell, “Everybody out of the pool!" "The Dominion of Canada was the original name, about as mild a term for a nation as there is, and consciously chosen instead of the more assertive Republic of Canada or United States of Canada. And no fierce eagle or beast of the wild for a mascot—just that chubby, industrious forest rodent, the un-war-like beaver. Theory 3: Canadians are, by history and temperament, the opposite of aggressive, and so, unsurprisingly, their humor is defensive; they beat up on themselves before anybody else—i.e., Americans— can do it.*** "'Not aggressive? I'll have you know that the Canadian government secretly formulated “Defence Scheme Number 1," an invasion of the United States, in the early 1920s. From James Madison forward, American politicians had so regularly blustered about making a grab for Canadian territory that preparing a pre-emptive counterstrike, should an American invasion ever be actually imminent, seemed only prudent. Theory 4: Canadians have inhaled such deep drafts of Britishness (the Union Jack disappeared from their flag only in 1965) that what there is of a Canadian humor style hews largely to those twin English enthusiasms, parody and satire. It has been sneered that the American idea of satire is a pie in the face; Canadian tastes have always been subtler, as befits a nation that tuned in weekly for decades to smart British comedy shows via the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, a kind of junior BBC in the best sense. Meanwhile, Americans were doubling up over Milton Berle and Red Skelton and that ilk. Satire also suits the shy Canadian temperament: you can savage your victim while masked in somebody else's identity. Anything t
