MBS The Milo Can Opener
Just across a road from Milo you can find all sorts of evidence of our economy. When I
first moved here as a city boy, I can’t tell you the number of times I looked at something
and asked “What is that, and what’s the thing on the back?” Or the front, or the side, or
what it was pulling. Now, after more than a decade, I know most of those answers, and
carry a satisfying respect for what they are, what they cost, and the skills and hard work
of the men and women who operate them,

We would appreciate it if we didn’t always have to invoice for
subscriptions to save time and money.
We will normally invoice business ads.
Thanks so much. -Can Opener volunteers.

The Dangers of Public WiFi:
Important Do’s and Don’ts
Restaurants and cafes are open for dine-in. Business travel is resuming.
Remote workers are ready to stretch their legs and venture outside. Whether
on a plane or seated al fresco, more people are working on the go again. And
to get work done between boarding passes and breadsticks, they're
connecting to public WiFi. But are they aware of the dangers of public WiFi?
Is it safe for employees to use open WiFi? And if you do find yourself logging
on to a new network, what can you do to secure your and your employer’s
data while you work?
Do use password-protected WiFi
A secured WiFi connection that requires a password to use is safer than
public, unsecured WiFi. It may be more convenient to connect to an open
network instantly. But a private network hosted by a cafe or hotel eliminates
the risk of a hacker offering free WiFi to lure in cyber victims. So, always
check if there is a private WiFi network, and ask for the password.
Don’t send sensitive data in cleartext
Attackers can set up man-in-the-middle attacks or other methods of cyber
espionage on public WiFi. To reduce risk, avoid handling or sending sensitive
data whenever possible. That means steering clear of financial data, Pll
(Personal Identifiable Information), credentials and passcodes, and any
restricted or confidential information until you're back on a secured network.
Do use a VPN
A virtual private network, or VPN, allows you to establish a secure,
protected connection to a corporate network. Even if you’re on public WiFi,
the VPN provides an extra layer of security and makes it more difficult for
cybercriminals to snoop. Many businesses have a VPN for employee use, but
you can also download one yourself. With the amount of work and
entertainment happening online, a VPN is now almost as basic as anti-virus
protection.
Don’t auto-connect to public WiFi
Auto-connecting to WiFi can feel convenient. An instant connection
wherever you go! But, it comes with hidden dangers, so turn off auto-connect
for both WiFi and Bluetooth. Then, each time you’re in a new location, you
can intentionally choose which network you want to use.
Do connect with HTTPS
HTTP and HTTPS are similar protocols that display web data on your
device. (You can see what you are using by looking at the beginning text in
the address box at the top of your Internet browser.) But, there’s one crucial
difference: HTTPS (S for Secure) is a more secure, more advanced version.
It keeps passwords private and is a safer connection so that other
confidential information stays, well, confidential. So, when you are on public
WiFi, check if the website you're using is HTTPS. If it isn't, wait until you’re
back on a secured, private network before logging in or sending any data to
that website.
Do use a password manager and SSO (Single Secure
Sign-on)
Passwords are so mundane that we forget how critical they are to our
online security. Unfortunately, public WiFi can expose us to attacks that allow
cybercriminals to steal passwords. That's why it's essential to use a different
password on every single website. A password manager simplifies the
creation and management of strong passwords for all of your online
accounts.
Don’t neglect device security
Security at the individual device level is essential, too. Keep software, in
particular Internet browsers, and apps up-to-date. Updates have important
security and bug fixes, so apply an update when one is available. Also, run
anti malware software to spot malicious activity on your device. Don’t click
links or open attachments from people you don’t know or seem out of
character. Remember that links in apps like Facebook are not automatically
safe - far from it in fact. And if you think you've spotted some unusual activity,
investigate right away, and get help if you're not sure what you’re dealing
with.
With a few simple precautions, you can safely and conveniently work or
entertain yourself while on the go, even when public WiFi is the only
connection available. Get a password manager to start beefing up your
password security and use our steps above to work safely from anywhere.

Exciting Changes are Coming

This will be my last newsletter after
almost 20 years, and I feel very privileged
to have been able to provide library
service to this community.
I would like to thank Tracy Mozill, Amy

dedication in making the Milo Library

well in their future endeavors.
I am very happy to be handing the Library

Oh My Darling
Mr. Lowe shows off a
Praying Mantis that he “raised”.
About 300 eggs hatched out but
only two made it all the way. He
didn’t have any food to feed all
300 of them so 280 of them became
food for the remaining 20.
Two finally made it to adulthood.
He started with the eggs in May of
99 and the last praying mantis
died in October of 99. Full grown
they were 8 - 10 cm long.
If you could go back in time - what decade
would you prefer to go back to and why?
Larry Thomsen - “I wouldn’t. I think that as we look back we often
tend to remember the good things and to forget the bad. That’s why
people talk of the "good old days” so much. It would be great to go
back to the fifties, for example, when it was safe to leave your house
unlocked, but would you want to be without television, computers, paved
roads, and so on. What I would really like to do is to keep all the good
things we have now and to get back some of the good things we’ve
lost in the past 35 years or .so.”
Jean Lumley - “I’d go back to the 60’s if I could. I loved and still love
the music from that decade, nothing else touches it. The twist, jive, fox
tot were so much fun to dance. It is still good to go to a dance where
the band will perform these dances. I think that family life was a much
better quality then than it is nowadays. Most mothers were at home to
be with the children. They did more of their own baking (especially bread.
.. yum) and families did more activites together than they do nowadays.
It did not mean that you had to spend a lot of money to do things together
■ you could go on a picnic and play ball or croquet, etc. Families took
Sunday off to do things together. I remember spending a lot of time
visiting my cousins when I was young. While TV was relatively new, we
still played monopoly and cards with my parents. I’m sure things were
stressfull at times, but it seemed to me that people were happier and
helped each other a great deal more than they do now.
Lynn Gibson - “If I were to chose a decade to live in it would probably
be the fifties. I actually was only a toddler in the fifties but life seemed
to be less hurried and less complicated.”
Gail Vandebeek - “I think the decade that I would go back to would be
the 1950’s. I love the music of the era and I am a heck of a jiver.
Things seemed to be easy then.”

Friday, November 12th was a holiday for the students
but the teachers had a professional development day.
They started out the day with a team, or should we say
a tent, building activity. The tents were made from
newspapers and had to be free standing. This was one
of many activities that happened that day.
above - D. Hewko and R. Tiede roll newspapers for
tent poles. Mrs. Hewko came on staff at the
beginning of module two. She teaches art (all

MILO CAFE REOPENS
“Milo Cafe at the Cottage” opened for take out service June 28.
This was an amazing feat as the restaurant was closed for less than a month.
The building was constructed off site, then moved on
after the old restaurant portion was removed.
The amount of work done by volunteers on this project was substantial. Job well done!
Wayne Lin is pictured above preparing pizzas for the Pizza Party opening June 29.

Why the Can Opener Wasn’t Invented Until Almost
50 Years After the Can
The first ‘can opener’ was a hammer and chisel
How did the first tin cans get opened? A chisel and a
hammer, writes Kaleigh Rogers for Motherboard.
Given that the first can opener famously wasn’t
invented for about fifty years after cans went into
production, people must have gotten good at the
| method. But there are reasons the can opener took a
while to show up.
Black Lobster and the Birth of Canning
Our story starts in 1795, when Napoleon Bonaparte
offered a significant prize “for anyone who invented a
preservation method that would allow his army’s food
to remain unspoiled during its long journey to the '
troops’ stomachs,” writes Today I Found Out. (In
France at the time, it was common to offer financial
prizes to encourage scientific innovation-like the one
that led to the first true-blue paint.) A scientist named
Nicolas Appert cleaned up on the prize in the early
1800s, but his process used glass jars with lids rather
than tin cans.
"Later that year," writes Today I Found Out, “an
inventor, Peter Durand, received a patent from King
George III for the world’s first can made of iron and
tin.” But early cans were more of a niche item: they
were produced at a rate of about six per hour, rising
to sixty per hour in the 1840s. As they began to
penetrate the regular market, can openers finally
started to look like a good idea.
But the first cans were just too thick to be opened in
that fashion. They were made of wrought iron (like
fences) and lined with tin, writes Connecticut History,
and they could be as thick as 3/16 of an inch. A
hammer and chisel wasn’t just the informal method of
opening these cans-it was the manufacturer’s
suggested method.
The first can opener was actually an American
invention, patented by Ezra J. Warner on January 5,
1858. At this time, writes Connecticut History, “iron
cans were just starting to be replaced by thinner steel
cans.”
Warner's can opener was a blade that cut into the can
lid with a guard to prevent it from puncturing the can.
A user sort of sawed their way around the can’s edge,
leaving a jagged rim of raw metal as they went.
“Though never a big hit with the public, Warner’s can
opener served the U.S. Army during the Civil War and
found a home in many grocery stores,” writes
Connecticut History, “where clerks would open cans

The long-awaited Sneak-A-Peak Pizza Party
is here. Today, June 29th, 2019, the “Milo
Cafe at The Cottage” is open for business.
Our operator, Wayne Lin, has agreed to
serve pizza, and donations are being
accepted toward the Will Family Legacy
Project. Robert Phillips of the Milo Hotel is
offering a free drink ticket for T’s Saloon to
all who come to see the new community-owned
restaurant facility.
On behalf of the Board of the Milo
Development Co-op, I would like to thank
Tracy and Loren Mozill, as well as all
contributing artists who prepped, painted
and finished chairs for the restaurant.
Adding to the excitement of the pizza party,
the eagerly anticipated “Chair Reveal” is
showcasing the highly unique and visually
appealing contributions of local artists to
this project.
Over the course of the last year, community
organizations, businesses and individuals
have rallied in support of our cause.
Local illustrator and graphic designer Derek
Evemden donated his time and talent to
assist with building design mock-ups, a new
logo for the Milo Development Co-op, as
well as the graphic artistry for the new sign
mounted on the front of the building. His
wife, Gillian Williamson, is lending her
talents to photographing the local artists
with their chairs.
Last fall, when we discovered that the
furnace in the restaurant went caput, Ron
Marks and Carol Armstrong had a used,
nearly identical furnace, that they were
willing to donate. This provided much
needed assistance to the co-op at a time
when expenses on the old building needed to
be contained. This furnace got us through
the winter, all the way to a brand-new
furnace being installed with the new
building. Shane Gregoire provided free
installation of Ron and Carol’s furnace.
Arrowwood’s Community Recreation
Association was replacing the dishwasher in
the Arrowwood Community Hall and
looking for a home for their old upright
commercial dishwasher, a high-end machine
that continues to work well. Upon hearing
about the Will Family Legacy Project, the

It was a breezy day in a warm, dry January as I made my way west, where I
found yet another retired piece of equipment, still standing proud, refusing
to rust into oblivion. This rake stood as a reminder of when farming was far
smaller, consisting of many more narrow passes across a field, exposed to
the elements. Rather than raking, its work was now to hold up a wire gate
when open. It was doing an excellent job.

Like a big pizza pie,
That's amore!
When an eel bites your hand
And that's not what you planned
That's a moray!
When our habits are strange
And your customs deranged
That's our mores!
When your horse chews dried grass
And then begs for more, alas,

That's a moor, eh?

MILO LIBRARY NEWSLETTER | MARCH 2022
Milo School News
Kirk's Corner
Well according to the Milo Mustang Groundhogs (a.k.a our
class pop up groundhogs), we have 6 more weeks of winter.
This past week of frigid weather sure made that prediction
accurate. In March we’ll be counting Lion (stormy cold weather)
and Lamb (mild nice weather) days. I don’t know about you, but
I am ready for “Lamb Days”. In March Paddy comes back! That
means we will be making traps for our building unit. Maybe this
year we will catch him :)
In language arts we are starting our research unit. This year
students will be researching animals that live in Alberta. They
will learn about “key ideas” and writing outlines from text. Then
they will use their outlines to write paragraphs. The final project
will be done on Google Slides.
In math we are continuing to practice and memorize basic
facts for addition and subtraction of facts families to 18. The
grade 1s will be adding one digit numbers up to 20, the grade
2s will be adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers, and grade 3s
will be adding 3 digit numbers. The grades 2-3 will learn how to
add and subtract with and without regrouping.
Science across the grades:
Grade 1 will be building mini objects of everyday things. We
will be learning different ways to attach items with glue, tape,
pipe cleaners, and paper clips. They will also complete a miniunit
in Spring. We will be looking for signs of spring to add to
our spring chart.
Grades 2-3 starting their unit on Exploring

We’ve all passed by this beautiful Wallis as it looks west from
the hills on the edge of Snake Valley.
I can only imagine the stories it could tell of loud days, dust in
the driver’s eyes, and the rough ride you get from steel wheels.

Is your Can Opener subscription due?
Check the end date on your label on the front cover,
“2022-Dec” for example, would mean your subscription
is paid until the December issue, 2022.
We would appreciate it if we didn’t always have to invoice for
subscriptions to save time and money.
We will normally invoice business ads.
Thanks so much. -Can Opener volunteers.

Vulcan County Division 5 Update
We had two meetings this month one was a
regular meeting and the other was a
Governance meeting, which is a meeting just
for information. We had three presentations at
the Governance meeting. They were
Community Futures, Victim Services and the
Oldman Watershed.
Community Futures run quite a few
programs that can benefit all ages. One that has
a deadline of May 15 is summer camp for the
kids. The camp comes highly recommended.
The kids have to do up business plans and run a
business, it gives kids life skills to be
entrepreneurs. If you have kids interested,
please go to https://www.rotaryayec.ca/ to sign
them up!
I also attended a FCSS meeting this month.
There are a lot of people in our County that are
struggling to make ends meet, especially with
everything costing so much more. If you are in
this position, please contact FCSS and find out
how they can help you. It might be the Food
Bank or any other number of programs that
FCSS runs. They can even help Seniors with
taxes.
Victim Services are looking for volunteers in
all areas of the County. If this interests you,
please contact them and they can get you
training and
show you where
you can help out
in the area.
I also
attended the
Fire fighter's
appreciation
night. It was well attended and a lot of awards
were handed out. Congratulations to the
recipients of awards. I will try and get a list for
the next update.
I have had a few calls about taxes. I am
learning a lot about how assessment works and
the mill rate. Unfortunately, assessment rules
are provincial, we have little say in how the
assessments are done or how the values are
determined. What the County does control is
the mill rate. We try to keep the mill rate low,
while funding important groups in the County.
Please call me if you have questions about
taxes.
My County number is 403-423-0149, if you
want to discuss any County business please call!
My email is [email protected] if that is a
better way to communicate. Thank you for
letting me serve you for this term.

Emergencies Act
The news cycle churns a mile a minute and by the time you
read this column, the Emergencies Act will have come and
gone. So that begs the question: Why did Prime Minister
Trudeau invoke the Act?
For the first three weeks in the month of
February, Ottawa was caught up in international
news. It's not often our country is the headline
story around the world, but the cross-country
convoy and subsequent protest in Ottawa did it.
What began as a convoy of freedom-loving
Canadians opposing mandates from coast-to-coast
driving to the Capital to make their voice
heard, became a weeks long camp site. The
original message may have been lost in the mix.
Thousands of locals flocked in during the
weekends, music blared, people danced, horns-honked.
Some called it an occupation, others
called it a party. But how ever you'd like to
classify the protest, it was an event that
captivated the country and even the world for
several weeks - and surely unlike anything I've
seen in the capital city. The unfortunate part was
that the protest was so large it spilled into residential areas,
which subjected residents to noise, blocking of streets, and
havoc.
But there was a real sense that the frustration from two
long years of pandemic restrictions was boiling over. Among
the crowds were truckers protesting the cross-border
mandate, people that lost their jobs due to restrictions and
mandates, and those that simply had enough with pandemic
restrictions. At a time when the world seemed to be reopening
completely, the federal government lagged.
Conservative MPs asked questions to the government but all
we got back were the same boring talking points over and
over. Conservatives moved a motioned for a plan - just a
plan! - Liberals and the NDP voted it down.
The unfortunate part of this protest was the way in which
information was disseminated. In this age of information that
is accessible immediately and from a variety of sources, I
plead with everyone: please do your due diligence, check your
information against a few different sources. It is up to all of us
to combat fake news and misinformation.
What became a problem were the blockades. Conservatives
believe in law and order, therefore illegal blockades that do
more damage than good was not the way to go. We must
protect the right of peaceful assembly, but we mustn't allow
illegal blockading of critical infrastructure. Be it at a pipeline
site, a border bridge, or residential streets.
Which brings me to the Emergencies Act. The border
blockades were cleared before the invocation of the Act and if
the Ottawa police force wished to move the trucks, they had
the means to do so. There was no indication for the need of
the Emergencies Act and it now sets a dangerous precedent
for the future. Emergency powers should not be normalized
and must always meet the necessary requirements for the
invocation. The ability to seize finances without due process is
a chilling proposition. We are continuing to hold the
government to account on this issue, as the Public Safety
committee has begun their inquiry. As we move to focus on
the Ukraine crisis, the Emergencies Act will still be a focus of
official inquiries.

Victoria Park High School 2015
The annual publication of the students of Victoria Park High School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 2014-15)pdfWell, here we are ready to close another school year, supporting our wonderful young *
students who attend Victoria Park High School. When our students choose to dedicate-themselves
to their studies, it is amazing to see how much they can accomplish. When I
reflect on why our students are so successful, it always goes back to the relationships that
students have made with their teachers.
Building relationships, is a big part of any success as we travel through life. Learning in the
classroom is one thing, but understanding how to work with people will bring us success.
Again this year, our students have had the opportunity to pursue so many different forms of
education at Victoria Park. Our new off-campus education facilitator, has supported many
students successfully obtain employment. Knowing that this is now becoming an important^,
component of schools, our District had made it a priority to assist students to be gainfully^
employed as they navigate their high school programming.
At this time of year, we are so proud of our graduates, because of their contributions
to the school and for the staff to understand how they have worked to support their learning]
as i t transla tes in to graduation. "
My wish for each of you is that you all have a wonderful and relaxing summer. Until our
paths cross again.
