The annual publication of the students of Hamilton Junior High, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 2013-14)pdfThis year's grade nines are an interesting group. They liked to study the insides of their eye lids in science (Brooke Malmberg) as much as they liked to build pyramids during their lunch hours. Poor Evan Walters went bug-eyed from studying too much and Sheri Olson just laughs it off. We caught serious Al Dumont thinking about whatever and Cara Varzari and Sharia Brown just being buds. You're only in grade nine once - we hope! 3 Allison Aldridge Jocelyn Anderson Ryan Anderson Amanda Armstrong Ray Baiguera Aaron Barr Alex Batty Keith Bertley Teresa Berg Jodi Bettger David Blenkin Ryan Bodnaruk Quentin Boehr Katherine Bouck Steve Bozsak Jason Brooks Jennifer Brown Sharia Brown Tara Buffalo Susan Bullshields 4 Charlene Bana Alison Bane Jay Biernaskie Charlene Black Plune Justin Bridgewater Bryce Brinsmead If I Had 1,000,000 As we are living in difficult economic times we decided to ask some of our grade 9's what they would do if they had a million dollars. Here are some of their responses. Leanne Fessler in pattern 9C said, "with a million dollars I'd buy lots of clothes, rent someone to take my brother away for a week, and buy a big house on the ocean in British Columbia." Miss Hudson, our resident B.C. real estate expert, said that it wouldn't buy the living room in a small house on the B.C. ocean front. Amanda Armstrong said "I'd buy everything I ever wanted and a rabbit" (We wondered if the rabbit had four wheels or four feet!) All Gwynn Mack wanted was a pack of gum. (You are going to have a little change left over that you can spend on a jaw breaker or slurpee!) Chris Seely said that he'd buy flowers to make everything look pretty. Sounds a lot like a flower child out of the 60's. Sorry Chris, you were born 20 years too late! Thinh Le wanted to buy some muscles. Well - Thinh, how about a Richard Simmond's "Sweat'n to the Oldies Five" video. Denver (Bronco) Crane would buy the school and fire all the teachers. Nice thought but the school isn't for sale. How would you like to have a swimming pool as large as the school filled with green jello? Jennif er Stringer would so she could go jello dipping. Elaine Butrenchuk Christie Carter Andrew Frankum, Lance Kozak, Christine Cook, Taneill Soroka, Lori Smits, Ryan Schapansky, Tyler Cseke, Dwayne Sinclair, BJ Dyck, Allison Aldridge and Mr. Bushell at a team based elective camp held in October at Beaver Mines. Christine and Lori went for a swim and just about frooze! f 5 Jamie Chinn Mandy Christensen Alison Clapton Rhonda Clements Taylor Coe Cordell D'andrea Ryan Dalton Tim Danforth Logan Danielson Nicky DayChief Wayne Eagle Speaker Sherry Eckert Donavan Edwards James Eichorn John Paul Ferguson Andrew Frankum Jennifer Fyfe Scott Gaskell David Gast Nick Gemmell 6 Cristine Cook Jennifer Cook Doug Crandall Denver Crane Tyler Cseke Jared Dudley Anthony Duffy Alan Dumont Bobby-Joe Dyck Kris Dyke Leanne Fessler Paul Fischer Kevin Fitzhenry Stacey Fletcher David Fortney Jeff Gordon Derrick Grant Kari Gugala Amber Haddow Craig Hamilton 7 Chris Harker Jon Haskett Kara Hegland Chelsey Heinrich Wendy Henderson Denver Hoof Austin Hornberger Ryan House Jeff Hutton Alyssa Ibuki Randy Kent Andrew Kergan Jennifer Kerr Devin Kinch Nikki King Kristy Kunimoto Jennifer Kuntz Lester Kwong David Laenen Catherine Larson Conner Hendry Ronald Hickey Ryan Hillmer Alicia Hollingsworth Chris Holmes Rhett Isleifson Sabrina Jackson Blake Johnson Shane Johnson Jennifer Kalmar Dessa Kirchner Alison Klassen Chris Koopmans Lance Kozak Erica Kraljic Marina Lawson Thinh Le Jocelyn Leavitt Stacy Leavitt Michelle Lejbjuk 9 Kristen Lorenz Melissa Lome David Low Gwynn Mack Siobhan Mackay Scott Madsen Corrie Mahan Darren Majeran Brooke Malmberg Natasha Maltais Jill McArthur Macenzie McArthur Loren McClennan Brandon McGowan Marcie McKillop Dorothy McRae Herb Meadows Jamie Miklos Doug Mitchell Jon Moore 10 Amanda Mandeville Andrea Marcinek Kristen Mclaren Will McNairn Looking Back Asking a few of the grade 9's what they would remember about Hamilton Junior High ten years from now was interesting. Some of the responses that we received were: "All the wonderful days in school learning, it was joyful," said Ryan Dalton. Look out High School, here comes Ryan! Kris Dyke's best memory was when "Al Dumont lipped off a grade 9 kid when he was in grade 7. They hung him by his undies on the railing." "I was sitting on the bus with my hands placed beside my legs and someone told me I looked like I was constipated" said Kari Gugala. Jennifer Fyfe - "I think my fondest memory was when Mr. Bucyk fell off the back of his desk." Alicia Hollingsworth was really impressed with the smell of the locker room. "Yuck!" Cari Nish was really into smells too! She liked the smell of the bathroom soap. Taylor Coe and Elaine Butrenchuk liked Mr. Chalmers in The Dance of the Baby Swans - personally, we think it was highly over rated! Many students missed Mr. Smith in science class. Things were really booming when he was here! Allison Aldridge loved all the trips she took away from the school such as choir and Outdoor Ed. "They were the best!" Blake Johnson, "the gross food in the cafeteria." (He'll probably be a greasy food restaurant owner when he gets older.) Chassidy Morin Tara Morrow Remember the lower level of the old wind and how Mr. Ramsay would always be on the grade nines for not acting mature. Well we decided to go down into the hole and check out some of these "mature" grade nine students and this is what we found. Jenn was practising catching flies while Taylor was puckering up for the shot. Kris Dyke did his best to show off his sinuses and Blake Johnson was caught in the squeeze. Taneill was showing off her Miss America smile. Chris Holmes was acting shy. 11 David Mackenzie Keith Madge Sheri Mullen Mike Mulock Stephen Nagy Cara Nish Jeff Nolan Chad Patterson Terry Pennington Kristina Persaud Melanie Peterson Marco Petrakis Shelly Price Ian Purves Mandy Racz Jeremy Reed Kelly Reeves Joey Saunders Ryan Schapansky Jordon Scherer Chris Seely Becky Sefcik 12 Kale Norsworthy Bev Oliver Anders Olsen Sheri Olson Matt Paskuski April Pierzchala Nickey Plaited Hair Kelli Ann Platt Michelle Pocock Rae Ann Pollard Greg Roberts Michael Roberts Mark Rogers Doug Romanchuk Erin Sandusky 13 Holly Selk Craig Selski Tyson Smith Lori Smits Taneill Soroka Nikki Southgate Jeremy Starzyk Caroline Steele Tim Stevens Andrea Stewart Brandi Teramura Kris Todd Marlene Tschetter Beth Turner Matt Van Egmond Evan Walters David Warkentin John Webb Crystal Wesley Peter West 14 Jennifer Stringer Nikki Sutherland Mike Svoboda NickSwager Cami Tanner Heather Van Nieuwenhuizen Cara Varzari Janay Viola Bonnie Waldern Greg Walkey Teresa Wingfield Trina Wong Alita Woznow Jessica Zgurski Wayne Zuehlke 15 NUTTY NINERS Christie Carter really didn't want her photo taken but we tried. Note Craig Hamilton in the background showing off his nostrils. Shy Jenn Cook tried to dodge the camera but we got her best side. Greg Roberts in the middle of a free face lift. Kris Todd was caught doing some work in class! Nikki Southerland attempting to keep her hair in place during a southern Alberta Chinook. 16 Doctor: ________________________________________________ Lawyer:________________________________________________ Dickie -Dee driver: _______________________________________ Football Player:_________________________________________ _ Shop Teacher:___________________________________________ Dancer:________________________________________________ _ Exterminator: ___________________________________________ Psychiatrist: __________________________________________ Psychiatrist's client: _______________________________________ Model:_________________________________________________ Car Salesman: ___________________________________________ Safeway Owner:_________________________________________ Talk Show Host:_________________________________________ Prime Minister:__________________________________________ Crayon Labeler: _________________________________________ Nun: __________________________________________________ Afraid of the Dark:_______________________________________ Farmer:________________________________________________ Fire Breather: ___________________________________________ Carpenter:______________________________________________ Coach:_________________________________________________ Taxi Driver: ____________________________________________ Dog Groomer:___________________________________________ Interior Designer: ________________________________________ Beach Bum:___________________________________________ Vet:__________________________________________________ Photographer:_________________________________________ Mechanic:_____________________________________________ Flourist:_______________________________________________ Mountain Climber: _____________________________________ B artender:_____________________________________________ Muscle Man:__________________________________________ Mascott: ______________________________________________ Rug Layer: ___________________________________________ Stewardess:___________________________________________ Housewife: ___________________________________________ GarbageMan: _________________________________________ Pianist:________________________________________________ Fashion Model:________________________________________ Bouncer:______________________________________________ Life Guard:___________________________________________ Grade Eight 18 Weird hat modelled by Sarah Anderson. Miss Blais holds her position as detention Queen of HJH. Here we have an unusual shot of Mr. Donaldson and Miss Vandebeek. We really don't know what to say! The overwhelming participation by the majority of the students resulted in pledge collections that raised the fundraiser thermometer red line up and over the anticipated total. The funds will be used to support the many programs offered to students here at Hamilton. Hamilton Junior High Students' enthusiasm and energy plus city business and merchant sponsorship made for a highly successful fundraiser. Students and staff worked with Trickster Theatre to develop the production that week. The school gym was set up with the “stage” basically in the middle, the audience seated around 3 sides, and the traditional stage was set up for a shadow play. There were a number of different little plays by various grades, singing and drumming in between sets by Alex Scalplock and the Natosapi drummers, dancing with audience participation to a native dance and the Virginia reel, the shadow play (picture above), and refreshments after. A huge thank you to the many, many people who worked so hard to make this a special night! Robert Phillips 403-485-8233 Justin Thompson 403-485-8125 My thoughts Rev. Gordon Cranch I receive emails from the Society of St John the Evangelist monastery in Cambridge, Mass. This is a summary of a bit of Monastic Wisdom from Br. David Vryhof. I have a memory of my fifth grade teacher asking us to write a short paragraph describing the things in our lives for which we were thankful. I sat for the longest time just staring at that piece of paper. I couldn't think of a thing for which I was thankful. I was surrounded by gifts, but didn't recognize them as gifts, and I couldn't begin to express my gratitude for them. I naively assumed that everyone had food and clothing, a loving family and a comfortable home. I was unaware of how privileged I was to enjoy these gifts on a daily basis, and simply took them for granted. Gratitude springs from the awareness that we have been given a gift. Often this awareness comes upon us in sudden and unexpected ways. We are walking along and suddenly our breath is taken away by the beauty of autumn leaves, or we are talking with a close friend and suddenly we realize what a gift this day is and how unexpected and undeserving we are. Our lives have been enriched. We feel grateful. We can nurture a spirit of gratitude by cultivating our awareness that we are surrounded by gifts. But to become aware of these gifts is not enough. Gratitude moves beyond the recognition of the gift to the recognition of the giver. In some ways, the gift itself is secondary in importance. What is more important is the exchange that takes place when we express our gratitude. The offering of a gift is only complete when we receive it with gratitude, and when that gratitude is expressed. Without the expression of gratitude, something is missing, for both the giver of the gift and the one who receives it. We Christians proclaim that God is the giver of all good gifts. We acknowledge that all that we have and all that we are is the result of God's divine goodness and love. God is the giver of every good gift: the gifts of nature, the gifts we receive in and through others, even the gifts of our selves. Jack Sutherland, a friend to many in the district, has made a very generous donation of 100,000 to the Lions Club of Milo, recognizing the nearly 65 years of service that this club has provided to Milo and Queenstown. In the spirit of Mr. Sutherland's donation, the Club has decided that these funds will be directed toward the Milo Community Hall Kitchen Renovation Project, rehabilitating a facility that has served the community well since 1985. While this project is organized under the auspices of the Milo & District Agricultural Society (the organization that owns the hall), President Lloyd Deitz graciously thanked Mr. Sutherland, on behalf of Milo Lions, at the milestone birthday celebration on November 23rd. December proved to be another busy month for the club. Not unlike Wayne Newton in Las Vegas, Milo's own Mr. Entertainment, Lion Greg Deitz, made a come back tour as bingo caller at the Pancake Supper and Turkey Bingo on December 6th. Fifteen turkeys were won, funds were raised for club projects, and the Milo School Council raised significant dollars from their bake sale. Everyone was happy to see Lion Greg back in action! The Lions Christmas Party was on the third Wednesday of December. A great turnout was had for this annual Stag Night, celebrating the season with complementary beer and loads of Chinese food. The Club would like to thank Master Chef, Wayne Lin, for his contribution toward the festivities! They live together on a lonely hill top (with a magnificent view) and stand as a reminder of how harvests were accomplished in the past. Those were the days before Lake MacGregor shone to the east, hydraulics put power anywhere, and hundreds of horses lived under a steel hood. Rev. Gordon Cranch I don't get to see the children much these days so I am going to post this in the hopes that some parent will read it to the little ones - with appropriate candy props. The Story of the Candy Cane There is a story about how the Candy Cane was created. This is one version. A candy maker wanted to make a candy that would help us remember who Christmas is really about. So he made a Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated many symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ. He began with pure white, hard candy. • White to symbolize the virgin birth and the sinless nature of Jesus. • Hard candy to symbolize the solid rock, the foundation of the church, and the firmness of the promises of God. The candy cane maker made the candy in the form of a cane because it represented the staff of the 'Good Shepherd' If you turn it upside down, it becomes a "J" to represent the name of Jesus. The candy maker included red stripes. • He used three red stripes to represent the pain that Jesus suffered as He took our place and suffered for our sins. • The large red stripe represents the blood He shed for us on the cross. Sometimes the meaning of Christmas fades. But the candy cane can help us remember how much Jesus loves us and why He came to earth on Christmas. This will be my last column in the Can Opener. The Church in Milo is closing at year’s end. It has been my pleasure to be a small part of the Village of Milo and the activities I was able to take part in - especially the turkey bingo. A very Merry Christmas to each and everyone & God's richest blessings for 2021. Queenstown Farmers' Co-operative Hall Peel's Prairie Provinces-----Newspapers----- Gleichen Call, 26 July 1917, Page 1, Item Ar00112 The Queenstown Picnic Queenstown Farmers' Union, Local 169 U.F.A. Organized March 29th, 1910. So read the brand new banner on the hillside overlooking the pavilion, booths and the playgrounds east of the Cluny ferry along side the Bow river, where the Queenstown farmers and their friends met to picnic last Friday. It was an ideal day for the purpose and if there were any who failed to enjoy themselves they should immediately consult a physician. That the ninth annual picnic was the best attended of any of its predecessors is undisputed, but just how many were present it was quite impossible to estimate for at no time was the crowd assembled together, but perhaps 600 would be a near guess. Scattered among the trees were hundreds of little groups, comprising from the fellow with his best girl to the entire family with a number of friends. The three booths did a wonderful business in ice cream, soft drinks and lunches until they ran out of supplies entirely. The Cluny ladies with their raffles and booth cleared about 500. Mr. Aasgard made an extra trip to town to keep his booth going, and an enterprising Chinaman catered to the Indians at the east end of the play grounds. Some excellent sports were indulged of which a list will be published next issue, when doubtless a financial statement will be supplied of the generous donation for that purpose. A baseball match created plenty of fun between Queenstown farmers and a Gleichen team, ending with a score of 6 to 9 in favor of Gleichen. The farmers played well but require practice. President Woods again disappointed all by failing to attend, but Miss Noble, president of the Women's Institute, made up for his shortcomings. In a brief ten-minute talk she set forth the aims and the objects of the Institute, told what had been accomplished and of the work that would be done. She also scored the men a little for making light of their efforts, claiming the women could do anything if they wanted to, right up to making the men work. Her talk throughout was concise, bright, breezy and interesting, and when Miss Noble comes this way again she should be certain of being well received. Hon. Charles R. Mitchell was also present and delivered a short address that evening, but our reporter was obliged to leave before he had spoken. Dancing in the pavilion continued until nearly daylight. Update on the Milo Hall Kitchen Renovation As you may be aware we started on the kitchen renovation early this fall. Well what we had hoped would take 6 to 8 weeks has been extended an additional 6 weeks due to delay in delivery of the range hood. This should be in by the end of November and then we should see action again at the hall. When you look at the Hall currently, it does not look like much has been done, but all the roughed in plumbing, venting and electrical is done. New lights are in the kitchen, the wall covering in complete and the new floor is in. Once the range hood comes and is installed, then we can complete installing the other equipment, counters and cupboards. In the mean time, the board has taken this time to clean out and paint a couple of the storage rooms, and we did replace the floor covering in the bar area and paint in there also. We have sorted though the smallwares in the hall, and we do have a couple of tables of plates, cups, cutlery etc that will be for sale to the public. Please keep an eye on Facebook etc, as we will notify the community when these items will be up for sale. We are having to replace the plates, cups etc., as the dishes will not withstand the heat from the hot water dishwasher that we have purchased. We are going with a hot water dishwasher due to the fact that the chemical needed for the other dishwashers has a shelf life and we found that it expired long before we were able to use it up, and the cost was quite hefty for the Hall. There have been other issues in the Hall but they are not related to the Kitchen renovation. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for the support in getting this project up and running. If you have any questions, please contact one of the Hall Board members. Thank you from the Milo Hall Board. Lloyd Deitz, Colleen Bartsch, Allan Bartsch, Dale Deitz and Colleen Deitz What the Heck is happening...... Wondering about the other activities at the Hall. Well to explain we need to tell a bit of a story. Back in 2012, the front end of the hall was sinking and there was about a two inch gap between the concrete pad (Floor) and the walls. Well we contacted a company that was able to lift the hall by way of injecting a sand/silicon product under the concrete slab and lifted the floor quit nicely. Well the front end of the hall began to sink again so late this summer we hired the same company to do the same job. However, they ran into a complication with the infloor heating vents. The west side of the entry lifted quite nicely, however the east side didn't. They were pumping the product under the floor when it broke thru the heating vents resulting in it filling the vents with this sand product. We have had the vents scoped, and there is way to much product in to just clean them out with out a huge expense, but this then resulted in plugging of the furnace that heats the east side. After conversations with the company and the Hall Board, we are in the process of obtaining estimates on reventing the heating ducts up into the attic and down the east side of the main hall. This cost of reventing is not at the expense of the Hall Board. This project had nothing to do with the Kitchen Renovation. When the weather got cold earlier this fall we also discovered that the west furnace had quit working, due to age so we are in the process of replacing this furnace also. We still have the situation of the gap between the floor and the walls on the east side of the entry, and we are looking at other possibilities to rectify this situation. Thank you the Milo Hall Board. Update on the Milo Arena As many of you know this building was built in 1973, and is owned and operated by the Milo & District Ag Society. The arena is a wood frame, metal clad building, and it has been a number of years since the roof on this building was replaced. Knowing this I started applying for grants etc so that we would have funds to do a roof repair/replacement when needed. Well that time has come. The leaks in the roof have caused some damage to the trusses so we have had MPE Engineering inspect them and have determined that only two of the trusses have 30% damage and are quite repairable, however, we were hoping that we could just replace the west side of the roof, but it looks like it would be best if we could replace the entire roof at this time. Like I said earlier we started saving for this project, however the cost to replace this roof is in the area of $80,000. Over the years we have received help and support from the Milo Ag Society and the Milo Recreation Board to keep operating this building, which it's only source of income is the memberships it sells for the arena and the fitness centre. I'm very proud of this community and the number of me

Library Lore | Spring 2022 / Issue 9 1 “I love having a safe, quiet, bright space to work at any hour. I often do assignments late at night and work better here. Library staff is super friendly and helpful.” – Student comment received in University Library’s suggestion box (2021, November). On October 4th, after months of planning and renovations, the University Library officially cut the ribbon on its new 24-hour study space on Level-10-North. This space provides a safe, secure and well-lighted location for students to use outside of regular Library operating hours. Usage to date has been exceptional and students are frequently making use of it early on weekday mornings before staff arrive as well as at most times on evenings and weekends. 24-Hr Study Space Proves Popular with Students If you’ve managed to get into the Library lately you may have noticed some more new faces. With the promotion of Professional Librarian Nikki Eva to Associate University Librarian, we’ve filled a Term Librarian position to ensure the collections and information literacy needs of those subject areas are met. Coincidentally our Term Librarian is a former co-op student as well! To introduce you this new addition, please enjoy the following short interview. RC: Thank you for meeting with me today Sheilah, I’m very excited for this interview. To begin can you tell us a bit about your background. SA: Sure, I have a Bachelor of Arts in Canadian Studies with a minor French from the University of Lethbridge. While I was completing my undergrad I realized that I wanted to have a co-op experience so I somehow managed to start working for the Faculty of Arts and Science in communications. I had completed the total amount of co-ops that I could do so I was actually hired on as a contract position. So that was really cool because I feel like I learned so many technical skills like learning how to edit a website, use Adobe Creative Cloud and things like that. While I was working there I decided I wanted to go to Library School so I started my MLIS at the University of Western Ontario in 2017. And as we all know I love a good co-op so I completed an 8 month co-op here at the University of Lethbridge Library. After my MLIS I started working in the private sector for a petro-chemical company called NOVA Chemicals. So that was cool – learning a new aspect of librarianship, because I worked in academic libraries and this was more of a special library. Also, learning more science and industry. I’ve started working at the UofL now in a Liaison Librarian position. RC: That’s great! So, you mentioned you decided to pursue the MLIS following those contracts in communications, so what was it about librarianship that appealed to you? SA: I think everyone here [in the Library] can say that libraries have had a big role in their life. So I’m no exception to that but I would say someone who had a really big impact on me for pursuing librarianship was actually Mike Perry. I’d gotten to know him when I was working at Coffee Company and he was very nice and would always explain his role in the Library. So I looked into it for about a year before I fully committed. And I’m glad I did! Also, when I was reaching out to everyone they all had such positive things to say. You know everyone was really gushing about their job so I thought “WOW, no one I know really gushes about their job like that.” That was definitely a deciding factor. RC: Cool! Now, tell us more about your role as a Liaison Librarian here. SA: I’m taking over for Nikki, so I’m covering the Dhillon School of Business, the School of Liberal Education, and the Departments of Agricultural Studies, Economics, and Political Science. I provide them with collections, and information literacy instruction, and, well right now I’m just really figuring out my role and starting to reach out to them and let them know I’m here and what I can offer. RC: Nice! So, what excites you about this role? SA: I like that every day is different – I like the variety in it. That you can choose what to work on day to day. I think it seems very exciting. Like, I was just on the Research Help Desk and you really never know what you’re going to get. I feel like I’m always learning in this role. RC: For sure. Now, you have quite a history here at the UofL. So what’s your favourite thing about the UofL? SA: I feel like everyone I’ve met at the UofL has been really kind and welcoming, and are really just kind of good people. So I like the people aspect of the UofL. It’s also really entrenched in nature – I like looking out my window and seeing the coulees, rather than working in a busy downtown area. RC: Which is where you just came from. SA: Yeah! RC: And what’s your favourite thing about the UofL Library? SA: As a student I would have said Level 9. But really my favourite part of the Library is how diverse the collections are and how there is something for everyone. Like we have the Main Collection and the other things like the Curriculum Lab. Also, the people in the library are very great. When librarians at the U. of Lethbridge mention the word GOBI, they’re referring to neither the vast Gobi Desert region of southern Mongolia nor the species of small tropical goby fishes of the suborder Gobioidei. The Library’s GOBI stands for Global Online Bibliographic Information which is an online interface used by our librarians to order books and e-books from multiple publishers. One of GOBI’s features is that it can be configured to email notification about new titles (called GobiAlerts) to faculty members. New titles are organized by subject discipline and notifications are customizable so that they arrive either weekly or bi-weekly. If a faculty member identifies a book or E-book title in the GobiAlert relevant for the Library’s collection, the item can be “recommended” for purchase with a mouse click. Contact your subject liaison librarian for additional information about setting up GobiAlerts to collaborate on building a library collection in alignment with your teaching and research interests. Faculty Can Use GOBI to Make Purchase Recommendations Library Lore | Spring 2022 / Issue 9 3 At the end of 2019, just a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, General Faculties Council adopted an institution-wide Open Access Policy in support of two worthy goals: • promote robust and persistent public access to the whole of U of L research published as scholarly articles, and • advance the public good of free intellectual exchange by supporting equitable, lawful access to the scholarly corpus for all global academic community members. In 2020, our first full year with the new OA Policy in place, a total of 85 faculty publications were submitted and archived in OPUS, the University’s research repository. Given the far from ordinary circumstances in which 2020 unfolded at the U of L and around the world, kudos to all researchers who found time amid the major disruptions and uncertainties to contribute their publications for public archiving in OPUS. Even more noteworthy is the 140% increase in the number of faculty publications contributed to OPUS over 2021, totaling 206 items. However, there is more that we can do collectively in support of the OA Policy goals. Whether our scholarly articles are publicly accessible to all researchers may seem like a relatively minor consideration, but adopting the habit of forwarding your publication acceptance notices to OPUS for potential public archiving enhances equity within the global scholarly community. Commenting on tensions among publishers, researchers, and institutional governance within the open scholarship movement, M.C.A. Bustamante notes an example of extreme inequity: in 2016, Elsevier’s profits exceeded the total amount invested in scientific research across all Latin American countries. Despite the sizable gap between our current situation and an equitable, healthy knowledge ecosystem, Bustamante affirms the importance of open access policies: It seems evident that institutions must have open access policies and these are relevant to guide the actions of all actors in our academic communities. The transitions we are living and will live through demand multiple and complex challenges to the institutions and they have no other alternative but to identify them, to look for ways out that prepare us strategically in the midst of these transitions that are now permanent in the case of publications. We are thus a little bit ahead of institutions that have yet to adopt an open access policy. But another commentary on equity in research by H. Irfanullah reminds us that “it is not only about money, technology, or justice. We also need to ask equitable for whom? Who is going to make it equitable? Where are the areas to intervene?” Irfanullah suggests if we want to address inequities, our approach to global equity and open research must change. “It should no longer be that the North is drawing or calling the South to join its effort to build an equitable scholarly publishing world. We both need to meet in the middle.” For Irfanullah, vital steps toward growing an equitable global knowledge ecosystem include “installing new technologies, making infrastructural changes, and adopting new policies and practices.” As we have an institutional OA Policy in place, on an individual it is within the power of all members of the U of L research community to adopt new practices to ensure we continue to make significant progress in advancing equitable access to the scholarly literature on publicly funded research. If you would like more information on how to contribute your scholarly articles to OPUS, please do not hesitate to contact your U of L subject librarian. https://pixabay.com/vectors/padlock-unlock-open-access- 150460/ Photo by Elena Mozhvilo https://unsplash.com/ photos/znhEe1cbbQE Library Lore | Spring 2022 / Issue 9 4 We all create, find, use, and/or need to manage, deposit, and archive some form of research data in our research careers. In case you missed the library’s Open Access week open data talks, both of these excellent workshops about research data are still available for you to review: Digging into Open Data: Canada’s Open Government Portals with U of L librarian Rhys Stevens, who explained how to locate free, open data on a wide range of topics through Canadian government portals. Lots of useful resources to check out! De-mystifying Data Deposit with James Doiron from the U of L, who walked us through the ins and outs of data deposit and research data repositories, including plenty of useful linked resources. These resources will be of particular interest following last year’s release of the Tri- Agency Research Data Policy, intended to promote sound Research Data Management and data stewardship practices in Canada. In 2019, due to ongoing reductions to the Library’s acquisitions budget and the inflation of electronic resource subscriptions, we made the difficult decision to cancel this popular database. Since that time, the acquisitions budget has stabilized, the CAD/USD exchange rate has improved modestly, and our consortia have succeeded in negotiating better deals with scholarly publishers. The Library’s Collections Work Team, subject librarians, and technical services staff have also done a lot of work in assessing the value of subscriptions and identifying cost savings with limited impact to our university community. Consequently, we have determined that there is now room in our budget to resubscribe to Project MUSE. Thank you to all who reached out to the Library to raise concerns about the cancellation of this resource. Project MUSE indexes and provides full text access to a wide range of literature in the humanities and social sciences. The database includes over 700 journals from 125 publishers and nearly 70,000 books from more than 140 presses. Some journals, such as GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, Histoire sociale / Social History, and Proceedings of the Annual Conference of the Children’s Literature Association, are not available electronically outside of Project MUSE. Project MUSE can be accessed through our alphabetical database list and the disciplinary database lists and library help guides, where relevant. Should you have any questions about the resource, be sure to contact your subject librarian! Project MUSE is Back! The annual publication of the students of G.S. Lakie Middle School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (2014-15)pdfG.S. Lakie Middle School Published in Canada Printed in USA When G.S. Lakie opened in 2003, the staff and students committed to four principles known as the FISH! Philosophy. The idea came from the concepts developed by Seattle’s Pike Place Fish Market. ™ Five years later, the FISH! Philosophy is still a major focus atXakie. The principles of Play, Be Therb, Make Their Day and Choose Your Attitude resonate throughout the middle school. Every day, students and staff consciously make an effort to apply these concepts to their own lives and to recognize them in each other. As you journey through the pages of this yearbook, we invite you to reflect on the FISH! Philosophy, and to remember how it played such an important role in creating the amazing atmosphere at G.S. Lakie Middle School. top: Hanging out during a lunch hour, Brock Ramias, Tyler Menzak, Keaton Shelton, and Connor Mackay, chat and enjoy the warm weather. second from top: In a fun foods class, Shaelynn Lyon pours a delicious smoothie. third from top: Observing through a microscope, Landen Bourassa, Justin Olsen and Mason Seguin participate in an interesting science class. bottom: Ainsley Bull Sheilds, Aubree Adams, Kayla Lee, and Rachael Thompson cheer on students , finishing at the cross country run. Ms. Solange Lalonde on Make Their Day: “In my opinion, if I can make someone’s day at G.S. Lakie, then I have done my part in creating a school culture where this building becomes a place where everyone feels they ‘get to be here’...whether you are a parent, student, teacher, administrator or guest.” Mr. Mike Bryant on Choose Your Attitude: “Choosing your attitude is one of the many important decisions you make each and every day. We choose to look at all the things that we are grateful for and to realize how lucky we really are. A positive attitude paves the way for us to be and do anything that we can imagine.” Ms. Vanessa Upton on Being There: “One of the very best feelings in the world is feeing like you are important and that you belong. Being there for each other is somethirik . we strive for here at Lakie, so that everyone feels happy and safe. Have you been there for someone lately?” 1teachers were commenting to all concerned that they had never seen a nicer bunch of kids in their teaching careers. The grade seven teachers made the same claim. This was not faint praise. ‘Nice’ is generally the norm at this school and to be singled out as the ‘best of the best’ made us look forward to spending the 2007-08 school year with them. We were not disappointed. It was an honor and a privilege to be their teachers. The fact that nearly 50 percent of them made the Honor Roll during the first term with 20 percent of them being at or above 90 percent...Wow!!! We have been blessed with the grade eights of 2007-2008. But what do you do for the remaining 133 hours off campus? Do you work at a part time job for spending money or do you attend sporting event s or go to a show? The life outside of class for each individual reflects their interests and hobbies. While some devote their time to becoming the best at their sport or hobby, others enjoy relaxing in front of the TV. The decision of what to do after school depends on when and where the event takes place, who else attends and how it fits into your schedule. Whatever the event, the influence of your friends and how you spend your free time define who you become! Aarin Shapiro and Kylie Epp Aarin:l am in competitive swimming with the Excali

Sol has a patch over one eye, a hook for a hand, and a wooden peg leg. “Ye gads, matey,” says Morty. “What happened to ya?” Sol says, “Me pirate ship was attacked, and a lucky shot lopped off me leg. So now I got me a wooden peg.” “And yer hand?” asks Morty. “When me ship sank, a shark bit me hand off. So now I got me a hook.” “OK, but what’s with the eye patch?” “I was standin’ on a dock, and the biggest seagull I ever saw poops right in me eye.” “But ya don’t go blind from no seagull poop.” “True,” says Sol. “But it was me first day with the hook.” Rude Pancakes A mother asks her young sons what they want for breakfast. The first little boy says, “I’ll have some @#%A& pancakes.” The mother angrily sends him to his room for cursing. She glares at the other little boy and asks, “What do you want for breakfast?!” The second boy says, “Well, I sure don’t want the pancakes!” The Businessman and the Parrot A businessman flying first class is sitting next to a parrot. The plane takes off and the parrot orders a Glenliv-et, neat. The businessman asks for a Coke. After a few minutes, the bird yells, “Where’s my scotch? Give me my scotch!” The flight attendant rushes over with their drinks. Later, they order an other round. Again, the bird gives the crew grief for being slow and the businessman joins in, “Yeah, the service stinks!” Just then, the flight attendant grabs the pair, opens the hatch and throws them out of the plane. As they hurtle towards the ground, the parrot says to the terrified man, “Wow, that took a lot of guts for a guy with no wings.” The Centipede Buddy Steve, a lonely bachelor, wants some company, so he buys a centipede and a small box for it to live in. That evening, he decides to go out. “Want to grab a drink?” he asks the centipede, but there’s no answer from the box. A few minutes later, he asks again—still no reply. Finally, he hollers, “Hey! Do you want to get a drink?” “I heard you the first time!” says a small, irritated voice. “I’m putting on my shoes!” The Zoo A man walks into a zoo. The only animal in the entire zoo is a dog. It’s a Shitzu. After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken. The Irishman asked for a whiskey, which was promptly brought and placed before him. The flight attendant then asked the Mormon if he would like a drink. He replied in disgust, "I'd rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips." The Irishman then handed his drink back to the attendant and said, "Me, too, I didn't know we had a choice." Mopping Up A police officer jumps into his squad car and calls the station. “I have an interesting case here,” he says. “A woman shot her husband for stepping on the floor she just mopped.” “Have you arrested her?” asks the sergeant. “No, not yet. The floor’s still wet.” • Patio will be finished for Lions Barbecue and Show’N Shine Weekend • Smaller New Signs purchased to better advertise what is available on the menu: Western, Pizza, Chinese. • New pizza oven is operational after initial setback.
