(See inside front cover for details) Gwdwc Cr^^cR This month's column is written by Christopher Wall, British Army Corporal (Retired): Someone close to me, who had served in the army for some years, shared this with me before Remembrance Day last year. His daughter asked him one evening for a photo of her Dad in the army to take to school. The teacher was putting together a collection of photos of servicemen and women who were related to the children. He said this came as a surprise to him; his children knew little of his army life. However, he felt happy and encouraged, knowing the school was teaching the children about Remembrance Day, although as the days got closer to Nov. 11, his stomach was in knots. A short time after the photo had travelled to school in a backpack, he heard the children had spoken of some of their experiences. He said that his daughter had not asked him for something to tell. She shared about a time when he had talked to them about his time in the army. All this made him start to think, do the children really understand why Dad unplugs PlayStation without explanation, if there is a war theme to the game? He then realized that every day is Remembrance Day for him, bringing back his time in the army. And it is that way for many others. It makes life difficult for the families who can never understand the horrors of war. Much like his children, he had grown up not hearing about war, despite many family members being, in some way, involved in WWII. The only remembrance of that time was Gran Dad pulling out some black & white photos, and beginning to talk of wartime. There was a photo of a ship, its guns with icicles hanging from them. Nan sat smoking her cigarette, listening. They had lived through the war and had endured. I remember to this day, that afternoon, all those years ago. They taught me a lesson that didn't become clear until later in life. "In war, there are no unwounded soldiers." (J Narosky) On Remembrance Day, we must put our busy lives on PAUSE. We must remember and thank the brave fallen, the unknown soldiers lost. They faced the fear and horror of war head on, for us. We pray for them and their families. We give our thanks and prayers for all serving today, for our veterans and their families, and to offer our support. We pray for families all over the world, that have been completely devastated by war. We give our thanks and pray for all in emergency services, for our police who protect us while sleep. We give thanks to God that there were brave men and women who gave their everything so that we can live in freedom today. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. Presented by the Milo and District Recreation Board Killer plants How toxic is toxic? Your garden is full of toxic plants, that could probably even kill, including parts of some that you eat (tomatoes, potatoes and rhubarb, for a few). As well, all of the medications you take are toxic. It’s a matter of degree. A couple of acetaminophen tablets will cure your aches and pains but a handful might kill you. If a tomato leaf got mixed in with the salad by mistake, you probably wouldn't notice, but if you ate a bowlful of tomato leaves you might have a nasty night ahead of you. Castor bean. The castor bean plant (Ricinus communis) is the most poisonous plant known. The seeds (they aren’t technically beans) contain the deadly toxin ricin. Ingesting eight seeds can kill an adult human. Toxicity varies by species, though: while five seeds would be fatal to a sheep, it would take 80 seeds to do in a duck. Castor Bean Monkshood. Aconitum is such a pretty plant and it’s shade tolerant. Go ahead and keep it in the garden but know that it is lethally toxic when ingested. If you have young children, treat your monkshood with the same caution as you do household drain cleaner. Handle with gloves. Monkshood Datura / Jimson weed. Sometimes called jimson weed, moonflower or devil’s trumpet, this plant's seedpods contain hallucinogenic compounds. People have died ingesting datura as a recreational drug. Jimson Weed Daffodil. The flowers that bloom in the spring tra-la will do you in if you eat enough of them. The bulbs are the most potent part of the plant and, since they look kind of like an onion, accidental poisonings happen from time to time, but rarely in sufficient quantities to be fatal. Daffodil Poison ivy. Of course you knew this plant is toxic to touch, leading to severe blistering itch in most people. But did you know it could actually kill you? The smoke from burning poison ivy can lead to blistered lungs if inhaled. If the damage is severe, it can be fatal. Don't bum poison ivy. I'' ’. .* / Poison Ivy Hemlock. The hemlock plant, Conium, which looks a little like Queen Anne's lace and grows in southern Europe, is deadly poisonous. The ancient philosopher Socrates was sentenced to death by drinking a tincture of poison hemlock. The native trees we call hemlock, Tsuga, are a different plant and are not significantly toxic. Stinging tree. Water Hemlock Worse than poison ivy by far, this Australian and Indonesian shrub (phew! none here), Dendrocnide or gympie-gympie, is covered in hairs that deliver a painful sting on contact. A rash develops and the whole ordeal can last for months. One human is confirmed to have died from contact with this plant, and horses and dogs are also

Open 10:00 - 3:00 Monday - Thursday, 10:00 - 3:30 Friday 121 Centre St., Milo, TOL 1L0 403-599-3981 My thoughts... Rev. Gordon Cranch When David's time to die drew near, he charged his son, Solomon, saying: "I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, be courageous... Most of us have experienced the loss of a loved one. Probably every detail of that final day are etched forever in our memory. While you may have been in a daze, certain memories, probably not even significant, remain. The walk down a hospital corridor numb with the knowledge that your loved one is gone. Have you felt how much like fear grief feels? I think that is why King David says these things to Solomon, his successor as king. If you are to be king, it is essential to be strong, to be courageous, even in the face of grief. If you remember, King David had lost more than one son already. He knew about paralyzing grief, something that a new king could not have if he was to be the leader that the country would need. Regardless of his natural feelings of grief for his father, Solomon would need to surmount that sadness. He would need to be strong and courageous - for his father, for his family, for his people. We, too, need to rise above whatever feeling of loss we are now experiencing in this unanticipated time of trial and isolation. Even when our restrictions are lifted, the world will not be the same as once it was. For some, jobs will be gone, businesses will have failed, many will have suffered the loss of a loved one from the COVID virus. But we still must live courageously in spite of our sufferings. Sometimes it doesn't seem possible. However, we have God's promise to us: "Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you... The Library Misses Everyone During This Pandemic Library & Archives Hosts a Milo Memories Night On the evening of March 5th, 33 people gathered at the Library for a showcase of contents, not only the Archives has collected and processed, but also that of our local historian Neil Godkin’s research. Library & Archives Manager Joanne Monner demonstrated how to access the records that have been processed with the Archives Society of Alberta at https://albertaonrecord.ca/milo-library- archives. Here you can search the many descriptions of archival documents, photographs, and textual records that we have fully processed. Local historian Neil Godkin hard at work with his research. The individual item level is not on this database, but we do have much of it scanned to be researched at the Library. The original documents are properly stored and preserved in the Archive Room and can be accessed upon appointment when the Library is open. Joanne Monner demonstrates scanned records, documents and photos. Library & Archives Hosts a Milo Memories Night Many thanks to the members of the Library Board and Friends for the delicious lunch provided for the event. The monetary support provided by the Milo Lions Club with the creation of the Milo Lions Fellowship is fundamental for this ongoing project. Vulcan County Division 5 Update With the Christmas season past us, we are getting back into the routine of things. Meetings for Vulcan County Council will be on February 2nd and 16th, if you would like to speak to Council or make a presentation, please let me know and I will see that you get on the agenda. We had one Council meeting in January, but are attending the Agriculture Conference in Edmonton. There seems to be quite a few alternative energy projects in the County, these projects help ease the tax burden on our rate payers and help make up the losses from the oil and gas industry. There are concerns on these projects, as there should be, mostly to do with weed control, pest control, using good agricultural land for these projects and a whole host of other things. As a County we only have so much control over these projects, the province is the one who decide if the projects can go ahead or not. We can dictate some things, but not many. I attended the Chamber of Commerce AGM and meeting this month and encourage business in the villages and rural areas to look into joining. They can offer benefits and networking with other business in our area. I also was on a zoom meeting that was about the proposed privatization of the police force. It is a very hot topic right now. If anyone has comments on this, I would sure like to hear them. There are a very wide-ranging opinions on this topic and I would like to hear from both sides. My County number is 403-423-0149, if you want to discuss any County business please call! My email is [email protected] if that is a better way to communicate. Thank you for letting me serve you for the next four years. - Kelly Nelson witii cei bfisd iie nr Ml AGES £ AKUT5S MCOMMfflfTT MOVEMEST ’ AWAB0KSS isn sw jtw Sf> n nwttt s iiteci W| BKf tn pts Htw s - teatt jate. fi tatiflMt we, Ktfust jutMWNtta I rataur wfasa. wat cusses I as to jw ttesE»»aM 1 Ufa fejtK Matt pwf! fatep kjk maMi. sw, at nj ate ststM ill! The sessions I attended increased my professional development. I was fortunate enough to join teaching greats like: Steve Spangler, Monique Waters, LaNesha Tabb, Juan Gonzalez and many more to enhance my teaching in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies classes. The biggest take away was to make learning fun in order to engage student involvement, which is my philosophy. “Kids want experiences” quote from Steve Spangler. “At school reunions this is what students will remember, not the worksheets.” The FISH program we as a school will be implementing will enhance this way of teaching. In reading and writing we are finishing our unit on story writing. Students are encouraged to learn parts of the story (setting, character, problem, and solution). In guided reading students are learning how to retell stories including these parts. The older grades are incorporating retelling with details from the text. We are looking at various ways to start stories by looking at various picture books. In math we are continuing to learn mental math strategies for adding and subtracting numbers. The grade ones are memorizing basic facts to 20, grade twos are learning to add and subtract 2 digit numbers and grade 3 are learning to add and subtract 3 digit numbers with and without regrouping. In science the grade ones are finishing their mini unit on “winter”. Here the students are learning about what plants and animals do in the winter, what are the winter activities that people do, and what is the weather like compared to the other seasons. The grade 2-3sare learning how to read thermometers and ways to heat up or cool places or things. They are learning about insulators. Their cumulative activity will be to make a to go mug that will keep the water hot for the longest time. The grade 4-5s are building vehicles. They are incorporating their learning about simple machines and designing devices that move. The grade 6s are on the sky science unit. They are learning about the planets, constellations, and phases of the moon. T

The project was run during the last week before Christmas holidays. The theme of “Water and our Community” was the focus of the week long study by Hamilton students. Teachers prepared a long list of topics that students could study independently or in small groups. Each topic had something to do with the general theme. Each student chose a topic from this list and completed a project on that topic or created a topic on their own that they liked to study that had something to do with Water or the Community. Students prepared some king of a “project” (a report, display, performance, book, craft, mural, or something else appropriate) to show to their teacher on the last day before Christmas holidays. All students had an opportunity to share their work with other Hamilton students and parents during an assembly on the last day. Students did not go to regular classes during the week. They worked in their home room or in the classroom of the teacher who was supervising their project during the week. At the end of the week the projects were graded by the teachers. Each student could receive up to ten bonus points for their project. The students then applied their bonus points to a subject grade of their choice for the second report card. This is fun. Part of the project is a new veranda-like roof over the sidewalk on the west side (at left), and new siding is being installed. The siding is a rust brown wood look that is really attractive. Owners Robert and Darlene Phillips have been busy. The building was shored up a few years ago by fixing the basement walls and construction of a basement room for craft nights, parties, and meetings. - Photo by Frances Thompson The Milo Can Opener A Community Newsletter published by Volunteers Layout Editors: Cameron Klem 403-485-1592 Barb Godkin . 403-485-8389 Subscriptions Barb Godkin 403-485-8389 Can be left at Milo Library Notices Any Can Opener volunteer Advertising: (Single Insertion) (Annual - includes subscription) Business Directory 5.00 5.00 60.00 Quarter Page 6.00 6.00 72.00 Half Page 8.00 -8.00 96.00 Full Page 15.0015.00 180.00 Classified Ads 2.00FreeItems:EventNoticesAnnouncements:Wedding,AnniversaryBirths,Showers,etc.CardsofThanksNewsItemsArticlesofInterestEditorialContent:LetterstotheEditorarewelcome.Allsubmissionsmustbesigned.Letterswillnotbeprintedunlesssigned,andrequeststoremainanonymouswillnotbehonoured.Deadlines:Thedeadlineforphotoready(JPEG)adcopyorarticlesisabout5daysbeforetheendofamonth.Pleaseallowadditionallayouttimeforunformattedcopy.TheCanOpenerisnormallyprintedthelast2daysofamonth.SubscriptionRates:SinglecopyCoverPrice 2.00 Free Items: Event Notices „ Announcements: Wedding, Anniversary Births, Showers, etc. Cards of Thanks News Items Articles of Interest Editorial Content: Letters to the Editor are welcome. Christmas is a gift of love wrapped in human flesh and tied securely with the strong promises of God. Christmas is angelic music in the form of a carol or oratorio with a celestial descant. Christmas is "Glory to God", "good will to man", and "Joy to the world". Christmas is "Peace on earth" for those who accept it and live in unity with God's will. Christmas is a man on duty tending sheep, or machine, who senses the upward call and stops to worship. Christmas is a tall green tree which serves as festive altar for any household which discovers the true meaning behind it all. • i Christmas is a ringing bell calling a distraught humanity to gladness and hope. * Christmas is a glowing hearth gently placed in the winter of man's loneliness. Christmas is an -altar to which man can bring his heartache for comfort, his lostness for guidance, and his sin for forgiveness. Christmas is the sparkle of anticipation and the steady light of faith in the eyes of a little child as he hears the old, old story. Christmas is the shining star of hope in the sky of all mankind. Christmas is more than words can tell, for it is a matter for the heart to receive, believe, and understand. Author unknown From our house to your house, to all those you love, comes my Christmas blessing that the Christ Child will enter your heart and bless you all the days of your life. As most are aware, at the June 11 community meeting the members in attendance requested that the BOD pursue the new building proposal presented by a group of local residents. A fundraising committee of 5 members was set up and this committee is busy soliciting pledges/donations. A deadline of July 31 was set by the previous BOD for fundraising. This meeting is to allow the fundraising committee to provide an update to the BOD & Membership on pledges/donations to date. A discussion session will be held after the presentation to determine the viability of moving forward with a new building. The BOD thanks all of you for your input to date and we look forward to your suggestions and comments at this meeting. My thoughts... The Bible gives commandments, rules for living our lives, examples of the lives of saints, and occasionally a question and then supplies an answer. In the Book of the prophet Micah we find this question: He has told you, O mortal, what is good: and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 This doesn't seem like God is asking too much of us, does it? Why would we not act in a just manner to our fellow men? But we don't. Justice is a word bandied about but what does it really mean? Justice is defined as a concern for justice, peace and a genuine concern for people. Justice is not the same thing as the law and sometimes we doubt that justice is being done in the world, although the laws are being followed. Often there seems to be one law for the large corporations and another for the small fry. One law for the rich and quite another for the poor and struggling minorities. Why do we not act with kindness each and every day of our life? But we don't. Would it kill us to share a kind word of encouragement rather than putting someone down when they are doing the best job that they can. How many times have your words cut like a knife? There are so many people that need a word of encouragement, a helping hand. Remember the kindnesses that you have received at the hand of another person. Pass it forward. And most importantly, why do we not walk with our God? Many in today's world do not walk with God, they deny His existence. They choose to ignore the Creator of all that we have today and of all the days before and all the days to come. We are always quick to say that God loves you, but sometimes.it seems that we do not make it easy for him to love us. And still He loves us. As I was writing this, I was listening to a Songs of Praise program on YouTube. A new hymn (Anglican, of course) was premiered, and the first verse caught my ear and says so much better what I am trying to say, so I will quote it to you: God of unchanging grace To whom alone be praise, Whose faithfulness and care embrace The measure of our days. For all that lies behind, For blessings yet in store, For every task by love assigned We worship and adore. Bp. Much like Netflix, our hoopla collection is always getting new additions; but titles are constantly being removed, as well. Also important to know is that Canadian users of hoopla have access to different titles compared to American hoopla users, again, like Netflix. If you get an error message that a title you found isn't available, it's probably for this reason. Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. Ginger Deitz grew up Ginger (Virginia) Hegland in Champion, about 45 minutes south of Milo in Vulcan County. Raised by parents David and Joyce, she is the oldest of three children, with a younger brother Cory, a younger sister Jackie, plus an older half sister Arlee, who came into the family picture later in life, about five years ago. Ginger completed schooling to Grade 9 in Champion, then attended CCHS (Vulcan) where she graduated in 1986. Her life long love of learning, baseball and volleyball matured while in High School and her best memory from that time is the unbridled freedom of finally being able to drive to and from school in the family K-car! (We all remember those.). Ginger’s first car purchase going into University was a bright yellow Ford Mustang II, and everyone could see her coming, and going, for miles! After high school Ginger headed to Calgary, and took 2 years of General Studies at U of C looking for inspiration or a calling. Nursing and Early Childhood Education were considered but neither felt like a good fit. So, Ginger withdrew from University and used her connections from working her first summer job in 1986 at CIBC in Vulcan to get accepted into the CIBC casual staff pool for Calgary. She first worked casual hours at the Crowfoot and Chinook Center branches, before being hired on full time at the 1800 - 4th Street Branch, a location where she experienced her first and second (total career to date, knock on wood) robberies! This was the beginning of a further 8 year stay in Calgary for Ginger and the start of her varied life long career in banking and finance. After a couple of years with CIBC, Ginger was hired by the Shell Employees Credit Union, where she was introduced to new and challenging financial roles including mutual fund sales, estate processing and teller management. Her tenure there lasted 5 years, followed by an office position for a year at Cubex Ltd, which sold heavy duty waste and water machines and equipment. Even during her time in Calgary, many will remember Ginger was always a familiar face in Milo, as many of her best friends and extra curricular activities originated and happened there. It was at the Milo Race Meet in 1985 when Ginger first met her future husband Gerald, and she recalls knowing immediately that someday she’d marry him. He, however, didn’t get the memo and it took until summer 1995 before Ginger began dating Gerald. She moved from Calgary to Milo in 1996 and marriage and children soon followed! Fast forward to today, and Gerald and Ginger are empty nesters with only their loyal dog Ace keeping them company. Ginger’s son Jaxson is in his last year at Lethbridge College studying for an Ag Science Diploma to ready himself to work on the family farm. Her daughter Nicole lives in the original Jack & Hilda Deitz farmhouse on the family homestead and has found a mixed career working with a local sheep farmer supporting lambing operations three times a year, doing custom spraying for a local business, and being the “Cattle Boss” for about 120 head of Wes/Gerald/Jaxson/Nicole cattle. The extended Deitz clan presence in Milo is large and built on the foundation of strong family values, and Ginger is now and has always been proud to have Deitz for a last name and share in their family and community traditions. Like many very busy people, Ginger enjoys camping, because it takes the rush out of the day, and shifts the focus to family and nature. Ginger and Gerald have a beautiful 5th wheel trailer and a great boat for fishing and water sports, and they enjoy any time away by a bit of water. She's also a voracious reader - across different genres, as it allows a move to quiet enjoyment. Something interesting you might not know about Ginger is that for the last 4 years, she has manned the music room for Jaxson’s home hockey games, first for the Vulcan Midget Hawks and now the Lomond Lakers Junior B hockey teams. She has even downloaded a wide and varied play list and enjoys using music to motivate the crowd and players. Experience makes us what we are, and Ginger’s resume is loaded perfectly for her current position. In addition to the wide variety of retail and banking experiences from Calgary, Ginger also had jobs locally working at the Milo Hotel and the former Wheat Pool/Agricore elevator (which is coincidentally now owned by her brothers-in-law Lloyd and Wes). She took some years off to raise their young children., but once the kids were in school, Ginger came back into the work force, and became the Chief Administrative Office for the Village of Milo for four years. In 2013 she joined the Scotiabank staff in Milo until the corporate office announced the branch was closing in 2016. In 2016, Ginger gracefully dove into the deep end of the new Milo ATB Agency, often working alone, helping Virginia Toly with her Milo business start up including learning completely new banking systems and team working with support people remote from her over in the Vulcan Branch. We all saw Ginger take care of us seamlessly, providing personal caring service that convinced so many that the act of walking their accounts down Milo’s Main Street had been the right thing to do. In fact, the Milo Agency has been a roaring success on both sides of the counter. Here is a bit more from Ginger herself - “April 1st marks the transition of my journey with ATB Financial from Agency Employee to Agency Small Business Owner, and I couldn’t be more excited to take on the new role and the challenges that come with it! “5 years ago, when ATB Financial embraced the opportunity to move in when Scotiabank only wanted to move out, I applied for, but was not successful in becoming the Agent /Owner in Milo. In hindsight, it’s the best thing that could have happened to me, because the savvy business woman they did choose, Virginia Toly, immediately asked me to work with her, then built a beautiful new office for us to work from and the rest, as they say, is history! “Virginia has been an incredible mentor and friend and I will miss her dearly and I wish her only the best in her retirement. I have learned so much from her that I just didn’t have, or even knew I needed to have, the first time I applied for the Agency - not so much about banking operations (of which she has taught me a lot), but the about the poise, presence, acumen, and dedication it takes to successfully run a small business and be a part of the fabric of the community. “While not much will truly ‘change’ on April 1,1 hope to make the transition as seamless as possible for all our clients by continuing to be someone they can always trust to listen to their story with empathy and understanding. I want to take offering great advice and connections to the right experts to the NEXT LEVEL so that ATB Milo can continue to meet, and hopefully exceed, every client’s financial needs whether that be basic transactional services, great savings products or innovative lending solutions! “I am super motivated to be an active part of sustaining and growing Milo for the future and thrilled to be giving back to the community that has always been there for me and my family. I sincerely look forward to strengthening all my personal connections, whether existing or new faces, and putting power to the ATB promise 'We exist to make IT possible’." Alberta’s Chickadees By Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society There are three types of chickadees habitually living in Alberta: the Black-capped, Boreal, and Mountain Chickadees. They are all songbirds with slightly different but overlapping (conifer forest) habitats. It can sometimes be tricky to figure out which type you are hearing or seeing. They are all known for the part of their song that gives this bird its name - “chick-a-dee-dee-dee”. These three types of chickadees are much alike in their mating (monogamous) and nesting behaviours, feeding styles and food preferences, flight patterns, food hoarding behaviours and physiological adaptations for winter. They are frequently in mixed flocks, so it is hard to tell them apart by sight or sound, but fun to try! Top to bottom: Black-capped, Boreal, and Mountain Chickadees. Fun Chickadee Information: • The chickadee is one of the most important pest exterminators in the forest and is a hard-working little bird. It eats huge amounts of insect eggs, larvae and pupae; caterpillars, sawflies, other insects and spiders. They will even hang upside down to access food! • Chickadees spend most of their day feeding and are so good at finding food that other birds (such as nuthatches and warblers) hang around to hear the call that means a good source of food has been found. Most of its diet consists of invertebrates during the breeding season, and invertebrates are about half of its diet during the winter (the rest being berries, nuts and seeds rich in fat). • When there is a lot of food, and in the late summer and fall, the chickadee becomes a food hoarder. It carefully hides food under a piece of bark, in a knothole or in a patch of lichen or foliage. A chickadee may cache many dozens of food items in a single day and can find these hours and even many days later (up to 4 weeks)... filling its ‘cupboards’ for when food supplies run low. It even remembers when it has used up a food cache. • A Chickadee has the skills and a special ability that makes it a uniquely adapted bird for Alberta winters. It kno
