Revered Crai/vch These days we are learning that the truth can come in various shades. It is difficult to ever know if we are being told the truth, the whole truth, the absolute truth. Indeed, is there such a thing as absolute truth? The truth that is today may well not be the truth tomorrow. In this particularly politically correct society, how does one tell the truth, and make it socially acceptable? We are so careful to not offend, that how can one know if we are being told the truth? And then there are those who wouldn't recognize the truth if it got up and slapped them in the face. What about those who will expound their particular version of the truth to anyone who will listen, no matter how wrong they are or how much they are offending those nearby? In a little reflection that I read, people used to have diaries and get mad if anyone read them. Now everyone can publish a blog or a post on Facebook for the whole world to read (and in most cases, they really should not have bothered). 1 We are told by St Paul to speak the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ...This is all we really can do - speak the truth in love. This does not mean that you are called upon to tell the truth in such a way that it becomes criticism or may cause pain. Honey, does this dress make me look fat? That is just a bomb waiting to explode. Best to plead deafness, I would think. Telling the truth is not always easy and is not always welcomed either. The leader of the nation to the south delights in making up truths. I honestly think that he believes if he says something it is automatically the truth. The truth in one person's eyes may not be the truth in another's. So what truths can we as God's people share? You can share your own experience of growing up in the faith of Christ, the joy that you receive from knowing that can share your joys and sorrows with the Living God. Share that life is easier if you live in a community of faith. Share your experience of the redeeming work of Christ in the world today. All of us need to grow in the inviting and welcoming of those who seek what we have found. In this way we can find partners to grow into a community willing to care for the whole world. At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters, busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady. I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises... back to back. As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises". She replied, "Yes, that’s true." I stated, "I don't understand" and she replied, without a pause, "It's cheaper than a nursing home". So, there will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is 200perday.IhavecheckedonreservationsatPrincessandIcangetalongtermdiscountandseniordiscountpriceof200 per day. I have checked on reservations at Princess and I can get a long term discount and senior discount price of 135 per day. That leaves 65adayfor...1.Gratuities,whichwillonlybe65 a day for... 1. Gratuities, which will only be 10 per day. And the rest can be put into the slot machines. 2.1 will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week). 3. Princess has as many as three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night. 4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo. 5. They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips and your casino winnings will have the entire staff scrambling to help you. 6.1 will get to meet new people every 7or 14 days. 7. T.V. broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No problem! They will fix everything and apologize for your inconvenience. 8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them. 9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on Medicare; if you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life. Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go? Princess will have a ship ready to go. So don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship. P.S. And don’t forget, when you die, they just dump you over the side... at no charge. Father learns that his daughter can predict the future... A father put his three-year-old daughter to bed, told her a story, and listened to her prayers. The daughter ended by saying “God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, and good-bye Grandpa.” The father asked “Why did you say 'good-bye Grandpa?"’. The little girl said “I don't know, daddy. It just seemed like the right thing to do.” t The next day the grandfather died. The father was bothered, but thought it all to be a strange coincidence. A few months later, when the father again put his little girl to bed and listened to her prayers, he heard “God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, and good-bye Grandma.” The next day, the grandmother died. The father was shaken. “My goodness,” he thought “this kid is in real contact with the future, the other side, or BOTH!” The father now listened carefully to his daughter’s prayers every night. All seemed fine, until weeks later, his daughter ended her prayers with “God bless Mommy, and good-bye Daddy." The father almost went into shock. He couldn't sleep all night, and got up at the crack of dawn to miss rush hour traffic on the drive to his office. The father was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch sent in, and even refused to stand near the windows in his office. He figured if he could stay alive until midnight, he would be OK. The father refused to leave the office even to go home, and stayed behind his desk, drinking coffee and jumping at every sound. Finally midnight arrived. He breathed a huge sigh of relief, and carefully drove home. When the father arrived at home, his wife said “I’ve never seen you work so late or come home looking so stressed. What’s the matter?” The father looked up, then looked his wife in the eyes and said “I’m sorry dear, but I've just had the worst day of my life, and am literally glad to have survived it.” His wife looked at him, gave him a big hug, and said “I understand dear. It’s been tough here too. A1B Financial Open 9:30 - 3:00 Monday - Thursday, 9:30 - 4:00 Friday 121 Centre St., Milo, TOL 1L0 403-599-3981 My thoughts... Rev. Gordon Cranch I receive emails from the Society of St John the Evangelist monastery in Cambridge, Mass. This is a summary of a bit of Monastic Wisdom from Br. David Vryhof. Humility as a virtue and a way of life has been highly prized and much sought after in Christianity. Both the Old and New Testaments praise it; Jesus models it. teaches it, and urges His disciples to seek it; and St Paul frequently commends it to early Christian communities. Humility has been especially valued in the Christian monastic tradition: monastic writers have seen it as a necessary condition for a right relationship with God and with others. But the virtue of humility has gotten 'bad press' in the modern era. Too often it has been associated with passivity, complacency, and unquestioning submission to those in authority. When we think of humility, we are likely to conjure up images of people with low self-esteem; people with fawning, weak personalities; or people who are afraid to assert themselves. Modern Western culture is rightly suspicious of that kind of 'humility' because it denies our intrinsic worth as human beings. But true humility, as Jesus taught it, is something other than the distorted image of humility that has been scorned in modern times. True humility maintains a health balance between proper self-esteem - based on the knowledge that we are beloved children of God who are made in God's own image - and an honest awareness and acceptance of our limitations, weaknesses and faults. Authentic humility encourages us to take our rightful place in relationship to God our Creator, to our fellow creatures, and to the earth on which we all live. Authentic humility, because it is grounded in truth, will lead to freedom: "The truth shall set you free" (John 8:32). Jesus is prepared to teach us this humility: "Learn from me", He says, "for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:29) The sure road that leads to God is first humility, next humility, and lastly humility. Ask me the question as often as you may, my answer will always be the same. Augustine of Hippo True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less often. C. S. No local forestry industry meant significant transportation costs added to every plank and post. In my travels I see beautiful quality wood products used everywhere for sorting corrals and loading ramps. They stand weathered and mute, but still solid and strong, hinting at hard days working with cattle. Alberta beef has a wonderful history, in which Vulcan County will forever hold a proud place." Gleichen Call, 4 March 1915, Page 1, Item Ar00104 Gleichen Royally Entertained 37 Home Volunteers Tuesday and Wednesday, March 2nd and 3rd, are days that will go down in the pages of history when the story of Gleichen is recorded in the years to come - and that very prominently - but now it is just news. When train Number 4 pulled into Gleichen at 17.07 Tuesday afternoon there were 400 on the platform waiting to welcome - perhaps for the last time - 37 of the volunteers from this town and district who have enlisted for the greatest war ever known since the history of the world has been recorded. On the platform were mothers with hearts almost breaking anxiously waiting to embrace and kiss the boy they had watched over since infancy; fathers waiting to grasp the hand of their son bid him welcome home and encourage him while a tear stealing down his cheek told of the inward feelings; wives wearing a smile in the gladness to once more look upon the lad they had given their love and life, "until death do part;" boys and girls looking for daddy and hoping he might now stay at home and romp and play with them; and brothers and sisters glad of one more chance to express their feelings and say kind and loving words, hoping that brother would again return home. As the soldier boys came off the train hundreds of voices united in welcoming them and then all proceeded over town and the citizens vied with each other in giving the boys a welcome home. Shortly after six the ladies of the Red Cross and Relief Corps entertained the soldiers at one of the most sumptuous banquets ever served in Gleichen, which was highly appreciated. After partaking of the good things Mayor Bray in a brief address welcomed the boys home and extended to them the freedom of the town. He was followed by Councillor T. H. Beach and Secretary MacLean, while W. B. Payne as resident of Gleichen for a number of years and a citizen of the United States complimented the soldiers and wished them success in their mission, after which Mr. Jowett made a few remarks. In reply Staff Signaller Bluecome and Sergeant E. Weddle made appropriate speeches and called upon their comrades to give cheers for the ladies of Gleichen which they did in a most hearty manner. Supper over the boys enjoyed themselves in meeting their many friends until the dance started in the Opera House, which seemed to be most thoroughly enjoy as guests of the citizens, and be it said that the citizens showed their readiness to assist in giving the soldiers a good time if one may judge by 90 one dollar bills they passed through the wicket. The people of Gleichen district are proud of their soldier boys and while on their little vacation to visit their hometown for the last time proved themselves to be gentlemen who warrant the confidence all have placed in them. Now let The Call add one thing more, which our warriors were too modest even to mention, and we have it from an authoritative source; that not a single man registering form Gleichen has been discharged for misconduct. Already a number have accepted The Call's offer to send free of charge a copy of this paper to the wives, mothers or sisters of any of the Gleichen men who have enlisted, until they return and will appreciate it if the rest will send in the address to whom they would like to send The Call. Gillian and I arrived in Milo five years ago after 25 years in downtown Toronto. While our friends thought the dramatic change would be overwhelming, from the day we arrived we felt completely at home. Perhaps it helped that we’ve always had ties to the prairies -1 was bom in Edmonton and my family lives in Lethbridge, and one side of Gillian’s family hails from Indian Head Saskatchewan. But what surely helped even more is just how friendly and welcoming everyone here has been. At the time, Gillian was setting up a new business with her partner Jean-Marc, who had moved from Toronto to Calgary with his wife. They had worked together for many years in a downtown photography studio and yearned to go out west and become their own bosses. The result of their shared vision is Studio Lumen (studiolumen.ca), a commercial photography and videography company dedicated to telling the unique stories of their clients, whether a small organic pig farm or a corporate energy giant. Happily, the business has grown to the point where they are now hiring assistants. I’m probably the one you see around town more often because even before the pandemic I was working from home. A former advertising art director, I’m now a full time freelance commercial illustrator (derekevemden.com) and graphic designer (everwhatever.com). I’m also the creator of single panel comic “Bogart Creek” (bogartcreek.com), which has been collected in two books by Canmore’s Renegade Arts Entertainment, and has appeared in various online magazines. On a local level, I had the honour of designing the logos for the Milo Development Co-op, Milo Art Society, and the outdoor signs for the Village Office, and Milo Cafe at The Cottage. Meanwhile Gillian is creating a video for Arrowwood, complete with some striking drone footage of the bison herd in Buffalo Hills, and will soon begin work on a video about the story of the creation of the new Milo Cafe at The Cottage. In recent news, we’ve managed to raise three chickens (“The Golden Girls”) who are finally laying eggs despite the weather. Gillian and I are enthusiastic members of the Milo Art Society, and I’m enjoying roles as Deputy Chair on the Library Board and as a Village Councilor. Talk about putting down roots eh? Thanks to everyone who has made us feel so welcome since day one. - Derek Evernden CREEK HSE Industrial Toyota Canada. Photo by Gillian / Studio Lumen. shoot. Photo by Gillian / Studio Lumen. You may ask, “what is an extreme sport?” An extreme sport is one that involves more risk or injury than average sports. It is an adrenaline pumping activity. One of the more popular extreme sports at HJH is Skate Boarding. There are others such as snow boarding, mountain biking, wake boarding, and BMX’ing. Josh Gabrial is an extreme skate boarder. He skates at the new Lethbridge Skate Park on the north side of town. He also likes the area downtown around the Centre Place Mall. He looks for steps, small walls, ledges and hand railings to challenge his abilities. Most skaters spend as much time as they can practicing their sport... some up to 3 hours a day. At the first of the year Adam Lastiwka and some fellow skaters when to the School Board Office with a proposal for the HJH Skateboarders. They wanted a place to do what they do! They skate at lunch hours but had been kicked off every place they had tried to skate that was near the school. They proposed that theHJH skaters be allowed to use the area that leads up to the school board office parking lot just south of the school. They knew it was an acces road to the board office parking lot and they didn’t want to bother the board office employees. So they put together a list of rules and requests to make the area safe for skateboarding while not bothering people who needed acces to the building. The superidentent, Mr. M. Clewes accepted their proposal and now the HJH skaters have a place to practice their sport near the school. 44 X-Clountry W>nners Senior Boys 1. Joel Kotkas 9:44 2. Adam Hoof 10:21 3. Paige Atkinson (grade 9) won herself a GMC Jimmy for her efforts in the bi-annual HJH fund raiser. Bridge City Chrysler donated the used sport utility vehicle to Hamilton for the event. Students participating in the fund raiser found sponsors before they took an exam. Students then collected a net amount from their sponsors or an amount per question they correctly answered on the exam. This was a more creative and fun way of raising money than selling chocolates or candles. HJH had some great sponsors so we had some great prizes. The top fundraiser was allowed to pick for first prize and every consecutive finisher picked next. Among the prizes was a round-trip for four to Edmonton courtesy of Integra Air. Coca-Cola, meanwhile, donated money to the school to help pay for basketball uniforms and glass backboards. Cathy Frache (grade 7), was the top fund raiser with a total of 406.above:JulieXu...Singmeasong.right:SidEraischowindownonsomerice.48left:DerekPorterandMr.Kerrarethetoiletpaperprinces.49above:Allthebubblegumhatingteachersthrowitouttoallthebubblegumlovingstudents.left:Ms.Rollingsontryingtosurvivethesurvivorassembly.left:HowmuchmoneywillDavidPotvinwinatthedartboard?below:Frogsanyone?Mr.LoweandBobStrandquisteatingtotheirheartsdelight.andthewinnersare...abovetop:OurtotalprofitfromtheMilleniumFundraiser.above:Mrs.Hammond,Ms.Richardson,andMr.Kerrhanding406. above: Julie Xu... Revered Crai/toh See what happens when we are called upon to leave our comfortable pews and go out into the world to do as God has told us? How many good things are done in the world when people of faith join together to accomplish what needs to be done? The Vulcan Food Bank will be gearing up for their busiest time of the year as they work to accumulate enough food so that needy families will be able to have a Christmas dinner. Odd how a secular organization that spurns the word 'Christmas' works so hard to ensure that folks have a dinner to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. But never mind their motivation. It is their action in serving as the collection and distribution point, it is your generous donations of food and/or money that enables them to provide this service and give those who are struggling to find a cause for celebration. Think of those who have helped refugees in their quest for a new life in Canada? All they want is a chance. They look for the justice that was not theirs in their own country. God is constantly at work in our world, stirring the hearts of people to get involved, to join in to provide a fighting chance for those new to our shores. Remember that all of us have immigrants in our family trees, and we don't have to go too far back to find a relative that showed up at Pier 21 in Halifax looking for a new start in life. See! A refugee has committed some atrocity and immediately all immigrants are unwelcome. What is the answer to that? Stop all immigration? We are a huge country with land and opportunity that will in the end benefit us all with immigration. The adage about one bad apple should not stop our compassionate assistance. See! Why not see what happens as we welcome the stranger and alien into our communities, to our schools, our churches. They will appreciate the acceptance and the safety that our beautiful nation provides to those who have seen so much evil and destruction in their lives. See! Remember back to communities and churches that were built so all of the Scandinavian/German/Irish/Ukrainian immigrants could meet and worship together and talk in their own language? In the generations since, this need has vanished as immigrants _ are assimilated into the general population. See! Mosques and temples rise up so people of like tongue and religion can meet together and worship. Give them a few generations and see if they are able to maintain their language and customs against the tide of English & assimilation. So it will not harm us to accept some of the millions of people from around the globe who have no chance at a good life in their country of birth. Remember that it is only through an accident of birth that we are born Canadians and will never know the struggles that so many face on a daily basis. ATB Financial Open 9:30 - 3:00 Monday - Thursday, 9:30 - 4:00 Friday 121 Centre St., Milo, TOL 1L0 Road Rage A man was being tailgated by a stressed out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman hit the roof, and the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. The policeman said, ''I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. "I noticed the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on
