DEMOLISHED The original L.H. Phillips and Sons hardware building was torn down in May by current owner Robert Phillips. pwptgy Pictured above is the start of demolition and, at right, all - that remains standing is Smd-<e- Valley Drop-In Center. According to the Snake Valley history book, in January, —— 1917, Les Phillips bought the Ostrum Hardware in Lomond. The “west side” of the Milo hardware was this Lomond store moved, in 1925 in two parts, on skids across country and Lake McGregor. Les' son Laurance (Robert’s father) took over operation of this Milo store. Other stores were opened in Arrowwood and Queenstown over the next few years. In 1 946, the Queenstown L. H. Phillips and Sons hardware ______ building (rebuilt after a fire and operated by Les' brother Jack and son Wallace before closing its' doors) was dismantled and rebuilt as the “east side” of the Milo hardware. Harvey Boyd indicated his father, Frank, drove one of the two teams of 8 horses (16 total) involved with skidding the original building from Lomond to Milo. Revered <^ordoy\, One of my Lutheran friends, the Rev. Dr. Tim Wray, wrote a piece for the Lutheran magazine and I thought I would share some of it with you. We have all heard and probably used the phrase, "The writings on the wall" but never really knew where it came from. In this case, it is from the Old Testament book of Daniel. To get the historical setting: Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon, has conquered Israel and has looted the First Temple and taken the Israelites to Babylon as slaves. (6th century BC). The years pass, with the children of Israel still in exile, Nebuchadnezzar dies and his son, Belshazzar, is entertaining at the palace, using golden vessels from the temple. There are many famous paintings titled Belshazzar's Feast. Out of thin air, a hand appears and writes on the wall. No one can read the strange writing. His queen advises him to send for Daniel to read and interpret the writing. As Pastor Tim put it in modern language, "Look, the writing is on the wall. You have been weighed, counted, and your time is up." For this, Daniel is rewarded for his interpretation. In contrast, the king dies that very night. God had judged Belshazzar and found him wanting, He has numbered the days of his kingdom. . t In our time, we do not find the writing on the wall, instead God's words are written on our hearts and that is a big (difference. We still use the phrase - the writing is on the wall - to this very day. Usually it is an indication that the end is in sight - running out of money, volunteers, workers. Many times, it is the non-profit agencies that often find their walls with writing on them - churches, too. But we can't despair. Organizations have a life span just as we do. The old passes away - hopefully after a long and successful run - and new enterprises spring up to have their day in the sun. Pastor Tim offers some ways that we still use this phrase: • A clear indication that things are going to turn for the worse or come to an end. . A hunch-a parent has when their toddler has been quiet for just a little too long - perhaps the writing really is on the wall in this case! . The conclusion of hindsight, though we didn't see it at the time. The scope of 'the writings on the wall' covers just about everything. Sport careers, darling stocks, Hollywood romances, political empires. Even if the very best of us were to try to hold on to greatness just a little longer, our intentions would prove powerless to the trajectory of fate once the writing is on the wall. Stuff ends. June Services: Sunday 9th- 9:00 am Sunday 23rd - 9:00 am see Ljon lia CVuxroh! Letter to the Editor: Jesus Is The Way Thank you Reverend Cranch for getting the conversation going about how to get to Heaven and doing our part while we are here. Four year old Reese voiced the question that eventually weighs on everyone's hearts at one point or another. "Gospel" means good news. The good news that the Bible presents is the very answer to this question: Jesus is the way to Heaven. (Billy Graham's peacewithgod.net gives a very short, concise explanation of this along with 1-2 minute videos.) The Bible tells us that human beings have a sin problem, and it is sin that separates us from God - the opposite of Heaven. We can't earn our way to Heaven by being good or doing good deeds or by trying to keep God's commands. Ephesians 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast." God's commands in the Bible can be likened to a mirror. A mirror shows us when we have dirt on our face just like God's commands show us that we are stained with sin. A mirror can't clean the dirt off of our face, just like keeping God's commands (referred to below as "works of the law") can't cleanse us of our sin. Romans 3:20 "Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin." So God sent Jesus to pay the punishment we deserved and to cleanse us of sin. This is the great exchange: Jesus takes our sin, we receive His righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." But this gift of righteousness and right standing before God, like any other gift, must be received. We receive it by being born of God or "born again". John 1:12-13 "Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God." John 3:3 "Jesus replied, 'Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.'" How can we be born of God? Through Jesus. John 14:6 "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" This is possible if we:• acknowledge we are sinners (1 John 1:8) • believe Christ died for our sins (John 3:16) • ask His forgiveness (1 John 1:9) • turn from our sins (repentance) (Acts 3:19) • then trust Jesus is our Saviour, and make Him the Lord (Master) of our lives. (2 Corinthians 5:15 "And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again.") When we are "born again", we enter into a relationship with God and become a new person. Not only do we receive eternal life (Heaven) when we are "born again" but we will experience life on earth in all its fullness. God doesn't want us to keep on wondering if we are going to Heaven, hence why He gave us His Word, the Bible. He wants us to know and have assurance after we put our trust in Jesus. 1 John 5:13 "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." God, our loving Father, knows that doing life His way (as explained in the Bible) is for our best and for the world's best as a whole. Who doesn't want God's best for their life and for the world? A Christ-follower will try (albeit imperfectly) to follow God's ways not to earn Heaven but out of love for God and others, thereby exemplifying the reality of Heaven that they already know and possess. If getting to Heaven depended on our ability to keep God's commands, 1) no one would pass that test, because none of us (Christian or otherwise) can live perfectly, and 2) no one would know when they had attained it - our loving Heavenly Father doesn't want us to live in that kind of uncertainty. And so God gave us the Bible, so we can know that Jesus is the surest path to Heaven. Gordon Cranch People expect this poor parish priest to be an example of Christian faith and life. I am expected to represent Christ in the community & world today. While I do try, I know that all too often I fail to show God's abundant grace. And how about you? Do people have any trouble knowing that you are a Christian in the best sense of that word? Too many are dedicated instead to 'churchianity'. They attend church faithfully but have no idea of what God has done and continues to do for them in their daily life. Their church life is centered on fellowship. All the baptised are called to share the gospel of Christ and to live their life as a Christian. Then there are the others who dare not set foot in the House of God for fear of being rejected for their appearance, their lifestyle. Yet many times they are the ones who treat God's lowliest creature with care and concern. They do not have any Christian education or knowledge of the Bible and the teachings of Christ, but the spirit of Christ works in the world through them. They walk the way of Christ without knowing the words of Christ. We are baptised into a living, day-to-day relationship with all of God's creation. If God is our focus, we will be given ample opportunity to say and show who Christ is for us. He asked them, "But who do you say that I am? You're used to having extended conversations with people who dialed your phone number by mistake. You understand the sentence, "Could you please pass me a serviette, I just spilled my poutine." You eat chocolate bars instead of candy bars. You drink pop, not soda. You know what it means to be on pogey. You know that a mickey and 2-4's mean "Party at the camp, eh?!" You can drink legally while still a teen. You talk about the weather with strangers and friends alike. You don't know or care about the fuss with Cuba, it's just a cheap place to travel with good cigars and no Americans. You can drive 90 km per hour through a foot of snow without flinching. You help people find things in Home Depot - even though you don’t work there. Pike is a type of fish, not some part of a highway. You drive on a highway, not a freeway. You know what a Robertson screwdriver is. You have Canadian Tire money in your kitchen drawers You know that Thrills are something to chew and "taste like soap”. You know that Mounties "don't always look like that." You dismiss all beers under 6% as "for children and the elderly." You know that the Friendly Giant isn't a vegetable product line. You know that Casey and Finnegan are not a Celtic musical group. You participated in "Participaction." You have booster cables in your vehicle, and your wife knows “Red to red, and black to black". You wonder why there isn't a 5 dollar coin yet. Like any international assassin/terrorist/spy in the world, you possess a Canadian passport. You know the French equivalents of "free", "prize", and "no sugar added", thanks to your extensive education in bilingual cereal packaging. You are excited whenever an American television show mentions Canada, and you make a mental note to talk about it at work the next day. You can do all the hand actions to Sharon, Lois and Bram's "Skin-a-ma- rinky-dinky-doo" opus. You can eat more than one maple sugar candy without feeling nauseous. You were mad when "The Beachcombers" were taken off the air. You know what a toque is. You have some memento of Bob and Doug, eh? You know Toronto is not a province. You never missed "Coach's Comer". Back bacon and Kraft Dinner are two of your favorite food groups. Canada is the home of: • Crispy Crunch. • Smarties • Salt & Vinegar chips. The size of Canadian footballs, football fields, and one less down. Lacrosse is Canadian. Hockey is Canadian. Basketball is Canadian. The biggest flags ever seen at the Olympic closing ceremonies were Canadian (twice...and the second one was smuggled in against a rule that was made because of the first one). Mr Dressup was better than Mr Rogers Maple Syrup is better than Mrs Butterworths and Aunt Jemima. Tim Hortons is better than Dunkin Donut's. In the war of 1812 we burned the White house and most of Washington. Canada has the largest French population in the world that never surrendered to Germany. Our "Civil war" was: • led by a drunken, insane William Lyon McKenzie and • a bar fight that lasted a little less than an hour. The only person arrested and hanged after our “Civil war” was an American mercenary who slept in and missed the whole fight, showing up just in time to get caught. We knew plaid flannel was cool way before Seattle did. The Hudson Bay company once owned 1/11th of the Earth's surface. The average dog sled team can kill and devour a grown human in less than three minutes. We still know what to do with all the parts of a buffalo. We invented snowmobiles, jet skis, velcro, zippers, zambonis, and the handles on cardboard beer cases. We can hum the theme to "Definition". We know that any scale that says water boils at 212 and freezes at 32 is asinine. We've all frozen our tongues to something metal, and lived to tell about it. We can outdrink Americans. >lo library Irdjte Milo Library Mar 2020 . CHINOOK t ARCH REGIONAL StSTgM This month’s book club read is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern In this mesmerizing debut, a competition between two magicians becomes a star-crossed love story. The circus arrives at night, without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within nocturnal black and white striped tents awaits a unique experience, a feast for the senses, where one can get lost in a maze of clouds, meander through a lush garden made of ice, stand awestruck as a tattooed contortionist folds herself into a small glass box, and gaze in wonderment at an illusionist performing impossible feats of magic. Our next meeting will be Wednesday March 25th, 7:00pm @ Tammy Lahd’s house. Dust clouds visible for miles march across the sky. Under or in front of each cloud is a man and machine, both with their heads down, moving deliberately across thousands of acres of crops. On this day, clouds filled with showers that could end the day’s work loomed, and then dashed across the sky. Another farming lottery. Photo taken by Cameron Klem. Harvest is always a magical time for farming communities. Harvest update: The Milo/Queenstown/Majorville areas were much dryer than normal this year. The scripture is Luke 13:34: How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing. I suppose one interpretation could be that Christ would like to gather all Christians under His wings but we are not willing. I know we are not willing, but the why we are not willing is the question. Is it that we are so sure that we are right and everyone else is wrong? I suppose all of the churchgoers of Vulcan could fit nicely in one church instead of splitting in to seven fractured communities, but there is little danger of that happening. Perhaps, Christ was talking more about living conditions. There are many in the world who would love to take shelter under His wings. We, who live in houses that could accommodate half a village, who waste more food in a day than some people eat in a week, who spend more on a carthan some people make in several years, all the while millions are dying of hunger and poverty related disease each day. Have we indeed taken refuge? I can't help but think of that needle with its tiny eye. You who read the Bible will recognize the quote from Matthew: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. Matt 19:24 * In the Jerusalem of Jesus' time, there was a gate into Jerusalem that was especially narrow. This was the gate that camels used to enter the city, but first they had to be rid of their heavy loads which hung from their sides on what we would now call saddle bags. This forced the camel driver to unload the camels before they passed through the eye of the needle. Just like the camels, we cannot take our loads of possessions through the gateway into the Kingdom of God. All our clutter and baggage must be left behind us as we take that solitary journey through the narrow gateway. The world tells us more is better, the Bible tells us that less is better. I think all the evidence stacks up on the side of Biblical truth. WARNING The jokes on this page are purposely intended to be insulting to a wide variety of people, some animals, science, and culture. I have avoided the dozens of jokes regarding religion and its different denominations. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK. What about different occupations; how many of them does it take to change that bulb? Teamsters? Six, and they get overtime. You got a problem with that, pal? Computer scientists? None. That bulb is either a hardware or facilities issue. Mystery-genre novel writers? Two. One to screw it almost all the way in and the other to give it a surprising twist at the end. Grateful Dead fans? None, they just let it bum out and follow it around for a few decades. Supply Side Economists? None. If the light bulb really needed changing, market forces would have already caused it to happen. Soap opera heroines? Three. The heroine, who goes up on a ladder to do it, and her psychopathic twin sister, who pulls the ladder out from under her and then locks her in the attic so she can take her place, plus their cousin, who has plastic surgery to make her look like both of them so she can search for the jewels that are hidden in the socket. Philosophers? Hmmm... well there's an interesting question isn't it? "Define 'light bulb'. New Jersey Mobsters: Three. One to change the bulb, one to be a witness, and a third to shoot the witness before they can testify. Tech support people? Well, that depends: "We have an exact copy of the light bulb here and it seems to be working fine. Can you tell me what kind of electrical system you have? Okay, now, exactly how dark is it? Okay, there could be four or five things wrong. Have you tried the on-off switch?" Chiropractors? Only one. but it takes six visits. Orgy participants? As many as possible, and please don't ask what they do with the old bulb. Actors? Only one. They don't like to share the spotlight. Corporate beer brewers? One-third less than for a regular bulb. Nuclear reactor designers? Seven. One to install the new bulb, and six to figure out where to store the old bulb for the next 50,000 years. RCMP constables? None. The bulb turned itself in. KGB agents? None. There never was any light bulb. Hollywood executive producers? Just one. but you have to guarantee creative control, a 100 million budget, and Tom Cruise in the starring role. Little people? One. With a step ladder, they're short, not stupid. Other varieties: How did the hipster bum his hand? He changed the lightbulb before it was cool. How many flies does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Two, but don't ask me how they got in there. What's the difference between a pregnant woman and a lightbulb? You can unscrew the light bulb. How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb? Well, it depends on the breed. Golden Retriever: You already brought this home? You didn't take me out in the country, and shoot one, and let it fall in the slough? That is NOT the deal. Let’s just review my breed for a moment OK? Say the word with me - “Retriever’. Rottweiler: A frickin' lightbulb, and it's not wrapped in raw meat? Make me. Greyhound: Can it run really fast? What, no? Remember, things that do NOT move fast, do NOT get me off the couch. Dachshund: Tell me this bulb is going in something six inches above the floor. Otherwise, it's walk time - with NO stairs. Jack Russell Terrier: Put it down somewhere in the back yard, and I II herd it into the house, the room, and the socket. I might bounce off the walls and the furniture while doing it, but you haven't played with me for 3 hours straight. Labrador - any color: First, could I please take a moment to thank you for the honor. And perhaps would there be a small piece of cheese involved in the process? Please? Extra please? Huh? If I wag my tail any harder, I’m going to damage the furniture. And I think my hip hurts. Australian Shepherd: Give me a minute to get all the lightbulbs in a circle. English Sheep Dog: Lightbulb? I can only see my bangs, and my front paws. Forget it. German Shepherd: Sure. I can fit that in between saving the people next door from their collapsed basement, finding the drugs in the car across the street, and making a quick perimeter patrol. I sense danger. Border Collie: Change a light bulb? Did you check the wiring? Oh, forget it, I’ll do that too. Boxer: What? Did you say something? Bulb? Could we set that up for after I'm done playing with my squeaky toy in the middle of the night? Cocker Spaniel: I see no reason to change anything. I can still pee on the carpet in the dark no problem. Pointer: That light bulb? The one RIGHT THERE? I see it, but I can’t move. Poodle: Oh please - manual labor? I’ll just wiggle my butt at that Border Collie across the street, and he'll have the bulb changed by the time my shampoo and cut dnes. He'll probably check your winng too. The Cat: Not gonna happen. Now, if you need the old bulb on the floor, just put it on any shelf, counter, desk, or island. And leave the room. What can happen when a Liberal/NDP/Green government needs to change a light bulb: • At first nothing. They initiate a blue ribbon panel to study coping with darkness. • The blue ribbon panel issues a paper stating that the light bulb doesn’t need changing. It’s the system that needs to change. • An alternate work group of LGBTQ2S consultants declares that the light bulb is not burnt out. It’s just differently lit. This is why ATB listens: You’re not a number, a credit score or a calculated risk. You are the story behind all that—and it's a story we want to hear. What you're going for, what keeps you up at night, what your “why” is. ATB listens because that’s how we can truly help, by making banking work for you. Lions President Lloyd Deitz and "The Elevator" donated the hamburgers while the club provided all other supplies. Hats off to all volunteers and participants for organizing another successful event while raising money for cancer research. The Lions are looking at ways to support the fund-raising effort towards the Community Hall kitchen renovation. Given the significant projects and improvements in the community this year, the Lions are conscious of the financial pressures on all community groups. This year proved to be a significant one for Lions Park with the installation of new playground equipment by the Milo and District Agricultural Society. The Village of Milo has installed a water timer on the sprinkler system that will help with better regulating water consumption and ensuring that the grass remains in good condition. Lion Loren Mozill is normally responsible for park maintenance, and he certainly appreciates the active support provided by the Village of Milo and the Ag Society with these improvements. Lion Glenn Robertson from Blackie Lions and acting Zone 8 Chair attended the last meeting in September. He is wanting to encourage stronger ties between clubs in his zone and appreciated the opportunity to socialize with Milo Lions. Lion Glenn mentioned that 2020 is the centennial of Lions International in Canada and encouraged the Milo Lions to adopt a "Centennial Project." All members of the Milo Lions are thinking of Lion Greg Deitz, wishing him a full and speedy recovery from a recent health scare. He has been a very active Lion, always eager for a good time, and we appreciate his service to our club and the community. — MILO LIONS CLUB PANCAKE SUPPER and TURKEY BINGO Friday, December 6, 2019 Supper 5:30 pm Bingo 7:00pm At Milo Community Hall Everyone welcome! Both that farmyard and houses and the Chad and Amy Monner farmyard and house to the east were threatened, but the fire was contained by a reseeded green canola crop, and efforts from numerous fire departments, graders, farmers bringing discs, everyone who hauled water, brought service trucks, and helped in so many ways. 78,400 gallons of water were brought to the scene. Others stay for a short while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same. I had occasion to dig our this little piece of wisdom recently, so thought it would work for this month's column. Have you ever thought of tracking down an old acquaintance from long ago? It is easy to lose track of old friends as we move along in life, get married, change jobs, move to a different province. It is easier now with the power of the internet and social media. I have been tracked down by several old friends, but I am a fairly easy target on a google search. I have succeeded in tracking down some old friends, with varying degrees of success. Some were happy to be found and remembered, but just not that interested in re-kindling a friendship. Others, it was if no time had gone by and we picked up where we had left off all those years ago. The bible has a parable about a jeweller who searches high and low for wondrous pearls, and when he finds them is so happy. This is like God searching for you, searching for me and when He finds us, there is great rejoicing in heaven. What about the people who have passed through your life? Have they left a footprint on your heart? Have they been the elusive great pearl that you have allowed to slip through your fingers? Perhaps it is time to renew that search for the pearls that God has placed in your life. September Services: Sept 13th- 9:00 am Sept 27th - 9:00 am See you in Church! September 2020 Milo Library This month’s book club read is two books, The Honey Bus by Meredith May and The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. The Honey Bus is part memoir, part beekeeping odyssey. It is an unforgettable story about finding home in the most unusual of places, and how a tiny, little-understood insect could save a life. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature. The next book club meeting will be held September 23rd at 7 pm. Lunch for Rover My dog chewed the tongue on one of my new, expensive running shoes. I hoped to save my investment, so I took the sneakers to a shoe repair shop. I placed them on the counter and told the man, "My dog got hold of this." The repairman picked up the shoe, looked it over, and placed it back down on the counter. "Well, what do you recommend?" I asked. He looked at me and replied, "Give your dog the other shoe." Fried Chicken Our teacher asked us what our favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken." She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else in the class laughed. My parents told me to always be truthful and honest, and I am. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, just like she'd asked the other children. So I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office again. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked us to tell her what famous person we admire most. I told her, "Colonel Sanders." Guess where I am now... In the beginning, God created heaven and earth.. Shortly thereafter God was in receipt of a notice to show cause why he shouldn't be cited for failure to file an environmental impact statement. He was granted a temporary planning permit for the project, but was stymied by a Cease and Desist Order for the earthly part. At the hearing, God was asked why he began his earthly project in the first place. He replied that he just liked to be creative. Then God said, "Let there be light." Officials immediately demanded to know how the light would be made. Would it require strip mining? What about thermal pollution? God explained that the light would come from a huge ball of fire, and provisional approval was granted with the proviso that no smoke would result. The authorities demanded the issuance of a building permit, and (to conserve energy) required that the light be left off half the time. God agreed, saying he would call the light "Day" and the darkness "Night." Officials replied that they were only interested in protecting the environment, not in semantics. God said, "Let the earth bring forth green herb and such as many seed." The EPA agreed, so long as only native seed was used. Then God said, "Let waters bring forth creeping creatures having life; and the fowl that may fly over the earth." Officials pointed out this would require approval from the Department of Game coordinated with the Heavenly Wildlife Federation and the Audubongelic Society- Everything went along smoothly until God declared that he intended to complete the project in six days. November has been a busy month. We have had two regular meetings, three days of budget meetings and the RMA conference in Edmonton. During the conference they had a course on your role as a councilor called MunilOl which I participated in. It is great that the municipalities recognized that training should be provided to councilors. Our meetings in December are on the 1st and the 15th if anyone is interested in attending. MPC starts at 9 with council following after MPC. Graveling is done for the year and we are stockpiling the sites for next season. The graders are being converted over to plow the roads in case we ever get snow. The crews that are still working are preparing the county for winter, with snow fence and making sure that the ditches are clear of trees so the snow doesn't drift onto the roads. If you have spots in the ditches that need trimming let me know. One of the problems in division 5 is the cost of replacing signs. Please don't use the signs for target practice. A sign with a post costs taxpayers around 200toreplace.OneofmycommitteesisCommunityFutures,theywouldliketogetthewordoutthattheyhavealotofprogramsthatpeoplemightbeinterestedin.Theyhaveasuccessionplanningcourse,designedwithfarmersinmind.CommunityFuturesmainfunctionistoloanmoneyouttopeoplestartingbusiness.Thereareloansforyouth,disabledandeverydayideas.Thereisalsoaprogramfor30hoursofbusinesscoachingifyouaredisabledinanyway.Thecoachisspeciallytrainedtohelpalldisabilities.Ifyouarelookingtostartabusinessandthebankcanthelpyouoryouneedcoaching,pleaselookthemupinOkotoks!Ifyouhaveanyquestionsorwanttodiscussbudgeting,pleasecallme.MyemailisKelly.nelson@vulcan.caifthatisabetterwaytocommunicate.Thankyouforlettingmeserveyouforthenextfouryears.FuturesrbghwoodBuildingTheHighwoodRegion.OneIdeaAtATimeWeremorethanjustabusinesstender.Forover30yearsCommunityFutureshasbeenhelpingbusinessesgrowinruralAlberta,andhereatCommunityFuturesHighwoodRegionvrevebeenhelpingourregionturntheirbusinessideasintorealitythroughFREEbusinessplanning,andcoaching.Oursmallbusinessspecialistswillconnectyouwiththeskillsandresourcesyouneedtosucceed.Weprovidetraining,upskilifng,andfinancialsupporttobuildyourconfidenceandexpertise,whilestrengtheningourcommunitiesthroughdiversificationofbusinessesandindustriesWhetheryoureinthestartupphase,planningforgrowth,oryouvebeenturneddownbyafinancialinstitution,ourteamisheretohelpyouGETSTARTEDTODAYhttps://highwood.albertacf.com14McRaeSt,Okotoks,ABT1S1K14039954151ATBFinancialisafinancialinstitutionandCrowncorporationwhollyownedbytheProvince(thatsthePeople)ofAlberta.OriginallyestablishedasAlbertaTreasuryBranchesin1938,ATBFinancialoperatesonlyinAlbertaandprovidesfinancialservicestoover770,000Albertaresidentsandbusinesses.ATBisaboutnowandyourfuture,fromeverydaygoalstobigdreams.ATBFinancial121CentreStreet,Milo,ABTOL1L04035993981TheFireDepartmentsthroughoutVulcanCountyaredoingaFoodDrive!pmacceptingdonations,pickeduppleaseemail:includingTherewillbeice,102CentreStreet,Vulcan.Emptyreusablebagswillalsobeavailableforpick/attheVulcanCountyAdministrationOffice.jrythingcollectedwillbedonatedtotheVulcanandDistrictFCSS.Someofthfemstheyareinneedofare:EvaporatedMilk,Applesauce,SnackCrackers,Cookies,andDogandCatFood.kPleasechecktheexpirydatesofdonations.Ifyouarearuralresidentandwantyourdonationjennifer.mcmaster@vulcancounty.ab.caorpsc@vulcancounty.ab.yourbluesignaddressforpickup.Weareaskingresidentstosetabagonyourstepsbetween79pmonTuesdayDecember14thandamemberofyourlocalFireDepartmentwillpickitup.IfyouwishtodropoffyourdonationtoyourlocalFireHallthatnighttherewillbeamemberateachhallfromadropboxavailablefordropoffattheVulcanCountyAdministrationHOLIDAYFOODDRIVEDecember14th,20217pm9pmVulcanCountyCommunitiesMiloLibraryCHINOOKAD(LJSEGfOHALI VIILIBRARYSYSTEMDecember2021BookClubistakingthemonthofDecemberoffandwillreconveneinJanuary,datetobedetermined.Thebookthatwillbediscussedatthenextmeetingis:ComeCloserbySaraGran.Recommendationsfrombookclubmembers:ThePaperDaughtersofChinatownbyHeatherB.MooreSistersBehavingBadlybyMaddiePleaseFallingbyT.J.Newman2022RMBAReviewSheetsTheRockyMountainBookAwardisforexemplaryCanadianliteratureaimedatkidsGrade47.Youcanbeinvolvedinchoosingthewinningbookbyreadingatleast5ofthenominatedbooksandgoingonlinetovoteforyourfavourite!Reviewsheetslistingallthebooksareavailableatthelibrarytohelpyoukeeptrackofwhatyouvereadandhowyoulikedit.Voteat:https://rmba.info/2022NonfictionRMBAnominees:RaffleFundraiserThelibrarysrafflefundraiserisonnow.Therearethreebasketstotaltobewon:oneforkidsandtwoforadults,withlotsoffabulousgoodiesineach.Yellowticketsgointotheadultdraw,andblueticketsgointothekidsone.Ticketsareavailableatthelibrary,store,postoffice,bank,andcafe,oryoucanaskalibraryboardmemberforsome.Theyare200 to replace. With all of the moisture that we have been getting, this has required more mowing and trimming than last year; certainly not a bad problem to have! The Milo Community Camp Out will be from July 3rd to July 5th at Enchant Municipal Park. While there will be no pancake breakfast or kids games this year, we hope that a great time will be had by all who attend. Plans regarding the summer barbecue will be discussed at a meeting in July. The new executive will be taking over on July 1st will be as follows: President: Mike Hingley First-Vice President: Greg Deitz Second-Vice President: Alvin Winch Secretary: Ian Godkin Treasurer: Dale Deitz Director: Allan Bartsch Director: Doug Bushell Director: Neal Deitz Director: Grant Turner Past-President: Lloyd Deitz Club Events Meetings are scheduled when needed during the summer. Campers will need enough food for all meals. While camping will be paid for by the Lions Club of Milo, those who attend are reminded to exercise caution through regular hand-washing and reasonable social distancing in accordance with provincial guidelines. The campground washroom and showers are closed. The park has porta-potties on site. Phillips Seed Our building construction on Railway Ave in Milo is nearing completion. Rev. Gordon Cranch Bev ripped out a page from her Catholic daily devotional and gave it to me for my writing idea file. It is of particular significance in light of recent developments in senior's residences and long term care facilities nation wide. Cast me not off in my old age; as my strength fails, forsake me not. Psalm 71:9 The psalmist has touched on one of the hot button topics which has surfaced in the midst of the pandemic. The Covid virus has swept through senior's homes, killing thousands of the elderly, the most defenseless of our population. Was this possibility not foreseen? Were proper procedures not put in place? Were the results of inquiries into seniors housing ignored? Did no one see that there was a tidal waves of baby boomers who were going to flood the seniors facilities? I think you know the answer to all those questions. Government after government, governments of all political stripes chose to defer action, rather than planning ahead to meet the oncoming crisis, and now the crisis has arrived. I think we can recognize that a vulnerable segment of our population has been shortchanged. A society is judged by how it treats its children and its old people. At least we can be assured that it is never God who forsakes us. In these times there are so many who are desperately trying to stay young. Growing old requires great patience. As I am growing older and was never noted for patience, it has been a struggle to deal with the fact that I cannot do what I once did - and that I need to accept that. But perhaps the need to move more slowly is a blessing - more time to stop and smell the roses. What glories of God's world do we now see in a new light when we know that one day, sooner than later, all of these glorious sights will be no more for us. O God of all ages, there is an old one in each of us that we need to cherish. Teach us to tend life in all our ages. Awaken our aging bodies that we may receive a glimpse of the wisdom that often comes with aging. Teach us to receive ourselves as lovingly as you receive us. Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr, O.S.B. To the scumbag who stole 100 cans of Red Bull from my garage fridge, I don’t know how you sleep at night! I hate it when my wife says “Are you listening to me?” Such a random way to start a conversation. A guide on how to fall down the stairs: Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Step 6, Step 12... A ham sandwich walks into a bar, and orders a beer. The bartender says “Sorry, we don’t serve food here”. I made a pencil with two erasers. It turned out to be pointless. I just bought a new blindfold, but I can’t see myself wearing it. My wife said that quilts are better than duvets. I told her to be careful making blanket statements like that. I used to be a wrestler. I would get a guy in a headlock, and write my name on their forehead. It was my signature move. A man walks into a hardware store, picked up a can of bug spray, and asked the cleric “Is this good for wasps?” The clerk said “No, it kills them”. Where did Captain Hook get his hook from? The second hand store. I used to be against organ transplantation. But then I had a change of heart. Before surgery, my anesthesiologist offered the choice of being knocked out with gas, or a boat paddle. It was an ether/oar situation. The man who invented Velcro just passed away. RIP. We know Albert Einstein was a genius. But his brother, Frank, was a monster. My Grandma isn't a fan of her new stair-lift. She says it drives her up the wall. I decided to quit my job as a personal trainer, because I'm not strong enough. So I handed in my Too Weak notice. There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator. Only a fraction of people will find this funny. If cardboard had a favourite sport, it would probably be boxing. Jokes about sausages are bad, but jokes about German sausages are the wurst. I always thought orthopedic shoes were overrated but I stand corrected. I was arrested last week for stealing kitchen utensils. But it was worth the whisk. Symptoms and testing Alberta has expanded testing to all Albertans, whether they have COVID-19 symptoms or not. Testing and Symptoms Any person who wants to be tested can now be tested, even if they don't have symptoms. Make sure you get tested if you have any COVID-19 symptom, including the minor symptoms like headache and fatigue. If you have any these symptoms you are legally required to isolate for at least 10 days from the start of your symptoms or until they resolve, whichever is longer: • Fever • Cough (new cough or worsening chronic cough) • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing (new or worsening) • Runny nose • Sore throat If you have any of these other symptoms, stay home and minimize your contact with others until your symptoms resolve: • Chills • Painful swallowing • Stuffy nose • Headache • Muscle or joint aches • Feeling unwell, fatigue or severe exhaustion • Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or unexplained loss of appetite) • Loss of sense of smell or taste • Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye The following groups will continue to receive priority for testing: • any person exhibiting any symptom of COVID-19 • all close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases • all workers and/or residents at specific outbreak sites • all workers and residents at long-term care and level 4 supportive living facilities • all patients admitted to continuing care or transferred between continuing care and hospital settings Alberta has one of the highest testing rates in the world. Our testing approach will evolve as we learn more about the virus and testing technologies improve. We have expanded our testing to: • trace the spread of the virus so we can identify steps to limit further spread • determine how well our public health measures are working • get a point-in-time assessment of the prevalence of COVID-19 in Alberta • inform decisions to move to the next stage of Alberta's relaunch strategy Book a testing appointment online with the AHS assessment tool https://myhealth.alberta.ca/Journey/COVID-19/Pages/COVID-Self-Assessment.aspx or call Health Link 811 for assistance. Gordon Cranch If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough. Meister Eckhart October brings us to Thanksgiving Day, the one day set aside to give thanks, in this case, for the harvest. Families will join together for a turkey dinner, and in a few of those homes, will stop to give thanks to the Creator for all the goodness and loving kindness given to us, His most unworthy children. This Thanksgiving Day what do we have to be thankful in the Year of Our Lord 2020? While the world is still in the grips of a pandemic, we can give thanks that we have been spared, thus far. Perhaps we can be grateful for the extra time spent with our immediate family (yes, I know that can be a two edged sword) and all the more grateful as we can expand beyond our immediate family albeit slowly and carefully. This year has resulted in bountiful crops, with an early harvest, plentiful yields, good harvesting weather - a harvest season not seen in quite a few years. But, of course, we should not need a day of the year, or even a bountiful harvest to give thanks to God. The many blessings bestowed on us are beyond measure, but we take them for granted. A war refugee, a person fleeing from persecution, someone with no food or shelter, clean water, no sanitation - I don't think these people would be quite so thankless if they were to change places with us. We can see the horrors on TV each night, but that is far away, and we are so far removed that it really does not affect us. There but for the grace of God... So if for only once in your life say thank you and that will be enough. When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude. G. K. And did you know that this person, as an entrepreneur, built the building we now see on Main Street with their own capital, at their own risk? Well, it's true. In fact that person also set up the agency in Arrowwood, as well as managing the location in Bassano. That person is Ms. Virginia Toly, and we at the Can Opener are very pleased to present you with another community profile. First a bit about Virginia: • She was born in England, and immigrated when she was nine months old. Her father was a teacher, and answered the call in Canada for teachers. After a brief return to England to care for Virginia's grandfather, the family returned to Canada and settled in Tilley. • After high school Virginia attended the University of Lethbridge for two years, but like many of us, didn't find a particular career path that called out to her. • However, Virginia did fall in love, and settled in Rolling Hills to raise a family, before moving to Bassano. • One day Virginia happened to be in the bank in Bassano, who were looking for staff. (She was hired the next day.) Virginia first worked in Bassano, then managed there, for 15 years. • Virginia has two sons: one is a Fish & Wildlife Officer in High Level Alberta, and the other is an electrician with Pronghorn Instrumentation out of Bassano. • Virginia lives with her partner Reg (who has three sons!) on an acreage. Virginia Toly in front of the ATB Financial Agency in Arrowwood About five years ago, after a broad corporate decision by Scotiabank to close many rural branches, the opportunity arose for ATB Financial Agencies in Arrowwood and Milo. As an entrepreneur, Virginia did her research, and personally put up the risk capital to build an agency office (from the vacant lot up) in Milo, and renovate a space in Arrowwood. (It should be noted that while Scotiabank did donate their premises to the town of Milo, they stipulated that no financial institution should occupy it. We need to remember that Main Street Milo simply did not have a vacant and appropriate building to replace the Scotia Bank.) The ATB Financial agency building on Main Street in Milo. Virginia visited Milo before taking her financial "leap of faith", and found Milo to be "a very cohesive community right from the get-go". She had curled in Milo, so certainly knew the town. Virginia was also struck by the anger within the community at losing a financial institution which they had faithfully supported for 100 years, through world wars and a depression. Virginia is in fact the owner of the ATB Financial building in Milo, so you could say that in Milo, ATB Financial services are brought to us by Virginia Toly! Four years ago the new branches in Milo and Arrowwood opened to the public. When I complemented Virginia on the beautiful small building that now houses the Milo ATB financial agency, she modestly referred to it as a "nice little space" that houses everything she and her staff need. I asked Virginia if she likes to cook. She replied to me that she has been previously advised to regularly dust her oven. Like many people who live in a retail environment during the day, meeting, greeting, and conversing, Virginia enjoys calm and quiet evenings. Virginia doesn't like winter, but does enjoy curling. Proof of Virginia's love for summer is her white convertible. I also asked Virginia (again, as a successful entrepreneur) for advice she would offer to children, or young people. Virginia's answer was to start small, but start. Many young people view a bank account as just a temporary holding facility, where money waits to be withdrawn, often in its entirety, and spent on a short-term item. Instead, Virginia's advice was to have that separate savings account, where a portion of earned money could be left alone, and "learn to leave it". In terms of financial advice for young couples to retirees, Virginia was quick to point out that we should never think that investing, or research about finances, is too difficult, or must be done alone. Virginia also stressed that she is part of a team of personal bankers with the emphasis on "personal". If you have a goal in mind, Virginia Toly and her team at ATB Financial Milo, Arrowwood, & Bassano can help you get there. The Milo Hotel - living history on Main Street! The Milo Hotel was built in 1926 and is one of the original buildings along main street Milo. The presence of the C.P.R. rail line, which was removed over 15 years ago, helped establish the need for a hotel. The building was built by carpenters Alick Soder-ling and Juergen Jacobson. The original owners, F. Sutton and sons, passed it on to Newt Main Street Milo, with the Milo Hotel & Bar at left. Boleen who sold it to a long time local John Deere dealer named Earl Jones. It wasn't until Earl Jones sold it to Bud Byers in 1957 that the hotel was upgraded with indoor plumbing. The Hotel then passed from Bud, to Lawrence "Smitty" Smith before being sold to ex Mountie Doug Buchanan. Doug was known for his "Self-Serve" methodology of selling alcohol, going so far as allowing people to ring up their own totals as well. Locals claimed that the system worked just fine, stating that he never lost a dime by doing things that way. In 1981 George and Marion Saunders bought the Hotel. George was a big burly man who used his size to maintain order in his establishment, but he and his wife sold the bar to Bruce Larson and Harry Gwinner in 1984. At this time the bar was expanded to allow for 65 patrons. Ron Leclair became the owner in 1988 and during this time electronic liquor dispensers were installed, and off-sale liquor was legalized, which the bar still offers today. The hotels storefront was given a facelift along with a few other renovations. When the next owner, Jennifer Gore, purchased the bar in 1996 she added an outside patio, along with a few renovations of her own. In 1998 The barroom was named "Slick-Up Saloon" The name stuck until July 2008, when current owners and operators Robert and Darlene Phillips purchased the bar from Jennifer Gore, at which time the barroom was renamed to T's Saloon. Over the years since taking ownership, Robert and Darlene have renovated the hotel bathroom, updated the rooms with some new furnishings, and renovated the hotel suite. All the hotel rooms now' have Air Conditioning and Satellite TV, and the barroom has been the beneficiary of new seating. Additionally, a large construction project is underway, digging out and adding a basement below the bar, which will add significant square footage. Robert grew up here, with family in the area since 1925. The family businesses began with a Hardware Store, (originally built in Lomond around 1910) run by Robert’s father and grandfather. Then, when the rail line was extended north from Lomond to Milo, the hardware store was moved, in the winter, using a team of horses, and skidding it up on the ice of the frozen Lake MacGregor. The family then bought out the hardware store in Queenstown, and transferred the stock to the Milo building. The following year the Phillips’ house was brought north, across the ice just like the hardware store had been, and currently sits behind the bar, owned by Shane & Jennifer Gregoire. Robert and Darlene Phillips Darlene grew up in Vulcan. First meeting was at the lake where Robert was teaching swimming, and as is often the case, they didn’t like each other. Darlene’s family was camping, and Darlene and her friends were told they couldn’t be there at that time, and unceremoniously "kicked out’. Robert went on to play hockey with Darlene’s brother in law at the arena in Vulcan, and they met again much later at a birthday party there. Robert had talked often with the previous owner Jennifer Gore, who had it for sale, and was shown the financial information ‘to see w'hy it wasn’t selling’. Robert’s daughter Trish (Thompson) was managing the hotel and bar for Jennifer at the time, and Robert asked Trish if there was a reason why they shouldn’t buy the place. Robert financed the purchase, and he and Trish owned the hotel for six years. Then, as will happen to young couples, Trish and her husband decided to have children. Robert then volunteered (!) Darlene, who bought out Trish’s share, which brings us to the present day. Behind the scenes however, there was the issue of an aging building, and a business that stands as a cornerstone - literally - for the town. Like a bank, a restaurant, and a grocery store, the Milo Hotel and its bar are part of the glue that holds a town together. If a community loses any of those, there’s now a reason to go somewhere else for something, and the town is on its way out rather than growing. Robert was faced with the fact that the entire west side of the building was caving in! Both Robert and Darlene agreed that at the point, after construction/renovation began, with the entire building jacked up to allow for installation of an all new foundation, the place became a large money pit. However, now that it is on solid footings again, the hotel can stand for another 100 years. Renovations continue, strangely aided by Covid-19 restrictions. The deck on the east side proved very popular on a warm day, and offers a cool, sheltered view as good as any in the town. The huge antique wheels (most off rakes or seed drills) currently resting on the west side will end up residing between the pillars there. While levelling the back yard with his skid-steer, Robert ‘bumped into something’ and found a literal stack of six steel tractor wheels about 5 feet in diameter. Robert’s best guess is that they were stacked in the ground to create a drain pool at the end of a pipe from the hotel’s kitchen sink. Another new addition is ‘Crawford,’ the coyote now living on the second floor, and languishing on the rail, looking east over the town. Robert and Darlene like to camp at Lake Koocanusa in northern Montana, and to get there drive through Fernie B.C. A woodcarver has a business on the side of the road in Fernie, carving just about anything, and Robert commissioned ‘Crawford’. Rumor has it that pups may make an appearance. More material awaits another article on the history within the hotel, so watch this space! Which is fine. That’s what is supposed to happen when the world decarbonizes by switching away from fossil fuels. Massive economic dislocation and disruption. Did someone forget to tell you that?” The current debate about climate change and what mankind should do about it has deteriorated to the point of absurdity. We’re told repeatedly the planet’s future is in peril and therefore we must change the composition of the atmosphere. This can only be accomplished if everyone everywhere uses less and ultimately no fossil fuels; coal, oil and natural gas. The problem is that despite decades of warnings, there is no evidence carbon resource consumption is declining on a global basis, and there exists no workable plan to make this happen on an international scale or in the short timeline put forth by the so-called experts. Worse yet, all data and forecasts indicate worldwide demand for fossil fuels will continue to increase for the foreseeable future, driven by economic and population growth. Because no matter what climate crusaders claim, there are currently no practical substitutes for the majority of carbon’s myriad of products and energy sources, tilings most people regard as essential. The divide between what we’re told must be done and what we’re doing is staggering. It’s as if people live in parallel universes where we all occupy the same physical space, but our brains are on separate planets where emotions and feelings have replaced facts. The climate-concerned have successfully convinced hundreds of millions of people that the world is on a one-way path to disaster unless massive changes occur immediately. Those who warn and worry about the earth’s future believe changing this is just a matter of stronger collective political will. But when you and I and everyone else fully understand how dependent we have become on fossil fuels and what life looks like without them, nothing happens. Why? Because faced with the reality of life without cheap energy and the thousands of products derived from carbon resources, the vast majority conclude the cure is worse than the disease. The challenge is fundamentally economic. It is simply not possible to focus on the future when, out of necessity, so many remain focused on surviving today and tomorrow. This applies to billions of people worldwide, and not necessarily your friends and neighbors. This is not to say climate change isn’t a problem, or that carbon resources are not a major cause. I’m not a climate change denier. In my lifetime I’ve seen the giant glaciers at the headwaters of the Athabasca, North Saskatchewan and Columbia rivers recede significantly. If and when they are gone, life in western Canada will be much different. But if this problem is as serious as so many believe and we want to get something useful accomplished, we must change the channel and have a more intelligent debate than the one currently underway. Because right now this is going nowhere, even backwards. FROM MIRACLE TO MENACE Alberta, A Carbon Story DAVID YAGER Being in the middle of the carbon/climate debate for over 30 years, I decided to write this book. In Canada, the direction of climate policy and the country has become a virtue-driven preoccupation about the actions of one-half of one per cent of the world’s population representing 1.6% of its emissions. The Canadian debate ignores the needs, aspirations and sheer mass and might of the world’s other 7.36 billion people. Those concerned about climate

Telephone: 587 678 5448 [email protected] to Constituents regarding the 2021 Federal Budget Martin Shields - Member of Parliament Bow River The Conservative Party has a plan to secure the future and secure our economy. The Liberal Budget 2021 does the opposite. After two long years, a 'fiscal snapshot/ and a 'fall economic update/ the Federal Liberal Government has finally released a budget. At 724 pages long, this budget could be used as a substitute booster seat for children, as many of you may remember, much like phonebooks used to be some few years ago. Make no mistake, the density of this budget is by design. It's jam packed with Liberal promises page after page - and no one will have the time or patience to read it. But that's what the Liberals want. This is clearly an election budget. We see billions in spending promises, almost like it's straight out of the NDP playbook. It is plain to see that the Liberal Party of today-Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party- is by far the furthest left-wing government this country has ever seen far more socialist than the Chretien Liberals less than 20 years ago. This government is activist: selecting certain campaigns and social issues to support, while forgetting others like protecting our Canadian Energy industry from foreign interest and influence. In recent weeks we've been able to comb over the budget. The clear standout is that the 2021 budget will add s330 billion to national debt over next 5 years, and federal debt will pass s1.2 trillion this year - sl,200,000,000! - meaning that every Canadian citizen, man, woman, and child owes over s33,000 in federal debt. Your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will be burdened with paying for this for years to come. By 2026, Canada will spend s39 billion on debt interest payments alone, more than childcare (s8.3 billion), Employment Insurance benefits (25.6 billion), or Canada Child benefit (s27.9 billion). This government has been printing cash - billions a day - in fact creating more money than collecting in tax revenue. It's unsustainable, will raise the cost of living, and when the bubble bursts, it won't be pretty. Some are familiar with German hyper -inflation in the 1920s, and more recently with Greece and Venezuela. What's most concerning however is that according to studies, more than 50% of Canadians are within s200 of insolvency. This is a disaster waiting to happen. I've been hearing from concerned constituents about the way this government has handled the economy, the pandemic response, and social issues among other things, and the response has been that this government is a resounding failure. A failure to protect Canadians from the incoming virus in the first place because the border wasn't closed. A failure to look out for Albertans' interests with the Keystone XL expansion. A failure in vaccine procurement to get us out of the misery we've been living in for more than a year. And now, the federal government is denying Albertans the opportunity to get vaccinated south of the border, even though the Blackfoot Nation in Montana has an excess of vaccines and has graciously offered them to us. All of this and more led to this calamity of a budget-the most money spent in Canada's history. If there is one legacy Justin Trudeau will leave behind, it's his audacity to spend taxpayer money without regard, and claim he's shouldering the burden himself. It's disingenuous and it's wrong. The Conservative Party has a plan to secure our economy by spending responsibly and balancing the budget. I can be reached by email at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing it up close and in colour! - Editorial staff. Sonny and Marina Vannatta 65th Wedding Anniversary Marina & (Norman) Sonny Vannatta On June 23rd Sonny and Marina Vannatta celebrated a truly impressive life milestone - their 65th wedding anniversary. Marina has created a beautiful painting of the old Milo Post Office, and will be donating the artwork to the Milo Library & Archives or Milo Community Hall. Marina & Sonny were married in Cluny by the United Church Minister Rev. Morrison on June 23, 1956. Sonny was working at the time on the road construction and they lived in a holiday trailer which they pulled to each construction site. Marina & Sonny stayed in the Milo area and worked for a farmer for a couple of years. Then they moved to Cluny to help Marina's Father Ben Reimche build the Cluny Hilltop Service Station and Cafe on Highway *1. They ran the Cafe and Sonny worked in the Garage with Ben. Marina remembers these as fun times with the Cluny/Glieichen people. By that time they had 3 children: Wanda, Larry and Vicky. After 5 years they decided to go back to farming and worked for Jack Sutherland for 12 years. Sonny ran the work crew and Marina cooked for hired help, grew a huge garden and milked 6 cows, sometimes running a tractor - very busy times with a young family. Sonny and Marina then went farming on their own, renting land from Rose Northcott and Marie Vinjie. They lived on Rose’s homestead 16 miles northeast of Milo, farming 3.5 sections of dryland with help from family at harvest time. Both Sonny and Marina operated the farm machinery and had a mixed farming operation with cows, horses, pigs, and chickens. They lived there for 31 years, enjoying, a fun and busy life with friends and neighbors. Sonny and Marina finally retired and are currently living at Garden View Lodge, east of Park Place Shopping Mall. As soon as covid restrictions pass, they would love to see you all. It's the Bill that the Liberal Government says will ‘modernize’ the Broadcasting Act. What the Government doesn't like to talk about are the implications and powers that will be granted to the Canadian Radio-Television Commission, or the CRTC. When Bill C-10 inevitably becomes law thanks to Liberal, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois collusion, Canadians’ online content will be subject to moderation and enforced by the CRTC. The Liberals have maintained the ruse that Bill C- 10 is nothing more than a legal mandate to level the playing field between foreign big tech giants like Google and Facebook. That they pay their share in Canadian tax just as Canadian companies are subject to. However, Canadians are not convinced, nor will they be fooled. The costs will be passed down to the consumer and will not be transparent. By volume alone, Bill C-10 has been the issue I have received the most correspondence on. In the survey from my May e-newsletter (to which you should subscribe if you haven’t already!) a whopping 93% of respondents said that government should NOT regulate posts on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Then comes the infamous 4.1 clause. The clause that protected Canadians’ content online was inexplicably stricken from the bill by the aforementioned gang of three. This clause would have ensured that, no matter the provisions put into effect by the other clauses in C-10, the content (or ‘programs') that Canadians would post online would not be subject to CRTC regulation. With this clause removed, the CRTC will have the power to compel social media sites to remove/modify/replace online content posted by everyday Canadians at its sole behest. No explanation, no criteria, no guidelines. Just because the CRTC can. The Minister of Canadian Heritage has gone on record saying that the CRTC 'has no interest' in regulating individual Canadians' content. However, that argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny either. Despite the apparent disinterest in regulating content, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. This opens up a can of worms and the potential for a snowballing effect. Regulation of content will set a precedent defined by the unelected, unaccountable body of the CRTC which operates at arm
