It seems that I spend a great deal of my time working with a few students who require special assistance or attention. I know also that those students who excel either in academics or in the co-curricular program at this school receive considerable attention and recognition for their efforts. I would therefore like to devote my space in the yearbook to .those other students who have done well in school and who have not received the recognition they deserve. I commend you for “hanging-in there” and getting the job done. Th'e many differences between students of the same age at each school reflects the differences between our societies. A legal driving age of eighteen years means that far fewer Victorian students have the opportunity to drive and own cars. The community does not seem to offer the same opportunities for part-time employment. Thus teenagers are, in general, more financially dependent on their families. Students at Balwyn wore uniforms to school. This policy of the school was supported by parents and accepted by the students. There is no such thing as “graduating from High School." Many students enter Technical Schools and Colleges after Grade Ten or Eleven. Some seek employment. Those wishing to take degree courses at Colleges or Universities do so after Grade Twelve. A great variety of social, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds was evident within the school population reflecting the variety within the contemporary multicultural Australian society. So early in my stay, I have found the most noticeable difference between the two schools to be the WCHS advisor system which I feel is considerably beneficial to the students - all of whom I have found to be very friendly and pleasant. Bruce Devlin 44 SPORTS Congratulations to all those who worked the long hours, and especially to those who enjoyed being part of the team. Football: For the fourth consecutive year the Bulldogs had a spectacular season, won the trophy, and are once again ... #1. Volleyball: The Falcons won the Tournament in Taber. The Bulldogs were first in the League, won the University Tournament and the Southwest Zone. Basketball: J.V. teams topped their previous records. The Griffins placed third in the League. Wrestling: Koji Miyaji achieved his second Provincial Gold Medal. In Regional competition Rick Higa and Dave Heynen each gained a silver medal and Darren Takao, a bronze. Cross-Country: South West Alberta High School Championships. Senior Boys: Derek Taylor (fourth), Dave DeGroot (tenth). Senior Girls: Bev Alexander (fourth), Lynda Witham (eighth). Derek Taylor also placed twelfth in the provincial meet. Curling: John Russell, Bev Alexander, Glenn Hamilton and Heather Hamilton were the first Lethbridge team to win the A.S.A.A. Gold Medal. Water Polo: We regret that, because of the strike of the city workers, pictures of the Water Polo games were not available. The regular members were: Greg Larson, Gordon Chan, Neil Delude, John Russell, Barton Oleksy, Rosie Buchman, Heather Prins, and of course, coaches May and Day. 66 There is a new member in our school this year; his name is “Apple." This computer is a permanent resident in Room 18. He has acquired many friends who come to visit during spares and every chance they get. He is a great help to the staff (faster at Math than Ken May) and loves to indulge in Sophisticated Games. 67 Chris Bexte: This year's French Club has been very, very active with fund raising activities, ranging from Car Washes and Bake Sales to Gift Wrap and Bottle Drives. Our activities included a trip to Edmonton for the Cabane a Sucre, a Talent Show, and dance and Christmas carolling. One of our French students, Laura Sterenberg, applied for an exchange program. We enjoyed having Fabienne here for three months, and hope Laura enjoys her stay in Quebec, and has many enjoyable experiences. Laura Sterenberg: I went on the exchange because I wanted to learn French but I found out there was a lot more to it. It was great having Fabienne here because she was so different. I’m looking forward to going to Quebec. Fabienne Saint-Cyr: I enjoyed staying in Lethbridge. Everyone made my stay here easier by smiling at me and being so friendly. I’ll never forget your school and thanks to everyone for helping me to learn English and a whole lot more. A big “Salut” from the French girl. The team made it to the finals in provincial play; losing in a sudden death tie breaker. Steve Takacs was a member of the all-star team. Coached by Merri-Ann Ford, also had a strong season, finishing with eight wins and one loss. They too lost out in the final match at the Provincial meet. Lana Simpson was an all-star. Teacher Karen Gregus and aide Pat Roy have included art, cooking, quilting, and snowshoeing in their interesting program. Especially appreciated were the colorful hall decorations created by the class. 32 Our fashion show this year was another great success thanks to Doreen Hill and the girls who participated. The Simplicity fashions were looking better than ever in 1978, remember? Popular autumn and winter colors were beige, brown and rust. Cowell neck sweaters, baggy pants and gauchos with nice looking boots were really in style. A fall colored feather on a thin cord for a necklace topped off any plain shirt, and plaid scarfs were also draped around the neck tied, pinned or loose. Doubl^.and triple ear piercing became popular, along with flowers, brets and hair combs. Our team repeated as zone champions by thumping Catholic Central Cougars 59-29 in the zone playoff final at Kate Andrews. Coach Clibb Walters was surprised at the ease in which we won the tournament, and said it was the best performance ever put on by the Griffins. Another proud moment was when we came in second in the Tournament of Champions, with Grade Prairie taking the title with the score of 41-33. The respective winners of that tournament were Ceinahs taking first, Griffins taking second, Cougars ranking third, and the Larks coming in fourth. Our girls did extremely well all season and we won't forget their hard work which showed in performance, accompanied by the great coaching they had from Cliff Walters. Always it left a smile and a song. Band, Chorus and soloists received fine marks at the Kiwanis Festival, and the stage band did well at that festival. Highlights \/ear A trip to Quebec the last week in May was the high point of the year for Churchill musicians. With the help of a federal grant the students flew to Quebec where they were hosted by the schools of St. Laurent. Lethbridge's sister city. The bariS and chorus gave a concert one evening and spent the remaining time touring Quebec and Ottawa. Harvey was a 6 ft. Pooka rabbit, seen only by Elwood P. Dowd. Elwood's sister, Veta, decides she must have him committed to a sanatarium. The confusion which resulted gave audiences an evening of enjoyment. The production involved students not only in the cast, but in all the backstage work: set construction, house and stage crews, costumes, properties, programs, and make-up. Mark Russell Elwood P. Lofgren 55 Churchill Students Swell Jn Scholastic Activities Churchill students were involved in competitions other than athletic throughout the school year and brought honor to the school. • Brad Gorzitza entered a project "Properties of the 4th Dimension", in which he hypothesized that a 4th dimension may co-exist with us, and won the senior high section of the Lethbridge Regional Science Fair. With the help of the School Board, Students' Council, the Active 20-30 Club, the Elks Club, the Legion, Brad was able to attend the National Science Fair. Churchill entered a team in a National Math Contest for students in grades 9, 10, and 11. Brad Gorzitza obtained a mark of 86, the highest churchill mark and ranked 15th in the Province. The team total of 225 placed Churchill 10th in the province. The team consisted of: Brad Gorzitza, Dave Kuijt, Kevin Theodore, Mark Murakami, Dan Kazakoff, Grant Wiens, Hugh Tyreman and Kenji Miyaji. Many students also took part in noon hour clubs and activities such as War Games, Chess, and Seekers, which is a religious discussion group. These groups help to create a well rounded extracurricular program at Churchill. It’s a big responsibility and a lot of work, but the outcome thrills me when I see people smile; and I know our efforts are producing a better school. All students of Winston Churchill play a great part whether they are directly involved, or helping out on the sidelines. When they cheer our athletes to victory, or applaud for the concert band or when they just make an appearance it builds our school spirit. If a school has good spirit it is a benefit to all students. Winston’s Travel Club worked hard for two semesters to raise money to go to Europe in April, 1982. The “all girl” club will visit a number of famous spots. Upon arrival in Amsterdam, a canal cruise will show them the sights of “Venice of the North.” In Germany they will see the twin spired Cologne Cathedral and Bonn. Along with a tour of picturesque Bavaria, they will visit Salzburg, the city famous for “The Sound of Music.” The last portion of their holiday will find them in Paris to see city lights and spend an afternoon shopping. Reflecting back through 40 years of old yearbooks while this keepsake yearbook was developed I watched the journey of a small north side school as it blossomed into a leading educational facility. A brief look back.. .WCHS was established in 1960 to serve all senior high school students on the north side of Lethbridge. The first principal was Reg Turner, an educational innovator. The school was originally located in the building at 9th Avenue and 20th Street North. The building Currently housing Churchill High School, constructed in 1967, was partly modernized with a small office and staff room addition in 1993; and renovated in 1999 to upgrade the science labs. The population of the school has grown from a coup[e of hundred students to the current population of 800 students. In revisiting my experiences as a high school student at Churchill, I dug up my 1970 year book. I came upon the message I wrote as Student Council President, as I was graduating from Churchill. Here I am again, leaving Churchill after seven wonderful years as Principal, facing a new adventure just like the grads of 2000, venturing forward to make my mark in the world. The words I wrote in 1970 seem to apply today... "As the year draws to an end, I look back over all the past excitement, and It has been exciting... Winston Churchill High School and its students and staff have come to mean a great deal to me. I would like to say goodbye to dear old Churchill High and in closing I wish the graduates all the luck in the world. I also wish good luck to the students coming up and hope that we have paved a way for you with all our hard work. Good luck also to Winston Churchill - for you have everything going your way, you have the friendliest people walking your halls and the greatest teachers teaching your classes. The Mission Statement of Winston Churchill states ...that they might become life-long learners and responsible, contributing members of an ever-changing society. The student's council understands this statement, had this year, and through our example, in helping the school and the students reach this goal. The word "pride’' is very important to the Churchill family, this has to the staff of Churchill for the time that they have spent with the students, and for all the extra time that they spent behind the scenes trying to make the most of this year. We wish the staff and students best wishes for next year, and hope that it will be filled with success and learning. Ken Baker -Theresa Ichino was Valedictorian in 1966. -Dianne Violini is a member of the WCHS Hall of Fame, she is a Canadian Champion bowler. -Carol Steen was Students’ Council President in 1970. -Ursula Morrice was Miss Churchill in 1971. -Terri Yamagishi was involved in all music and drama productions for the three years she attended WCHS. -Rik Jesse was a 4A All Star in Basketball and Volleyball in 1979. -Ron Moline and Carey Rowntree played on the Championship SAHSFL Football team 1978-1980. Ron was League MVP in 79 and Carey was League All Star in 1980. -Peggy Au will marry Neil Gilbert’s son, 39 Jody, on July 1,2000. SCHOOL HISTORY Winston ChurchllTHigh School was established in 1960 to serve all senior high school students on the north side of Lethbridge. Mr. Reg Turner was the first principo of WCHS and the man who created many Churchill traditions. He was a leader with vision who believed in student centered learning and implemented the advisor system. It was Reg Turner who allowed students to address their teachers by their first names. S Churchill was originally located in the building that is now Wilson Middle School. The existing building was constructed in 1967. On the last day of classes before Easter break the staff and students of Churchill moved Into the new building, it was a very disorganized event. Students carried their own desks and books, on foot, the three blocks to the new school. Many students loaded equipment and text books into vans and helped set up new classrooms. The school was not complete when the move occurred. The gym, foods room and art room were not ready to be used. Many items had to go in storage for a while. In 1971 Reg Turner retired and then held a position on the School Board. Mr. Wayne Terriff was the second principal of the school from 1971-1973. Jim Anderson was principal for the 1973-74 school year, In March of 1973, the School Board approved a plan by which Winston Churchill developed an individualized learning program. The program was fully | implemented in the fall of 1974. Students worked Independently from learning guides and went to class when they needed assistance. The advisor system was an integral part of this system. In January 1975, Graeme Wigg became Acting Principal, and In May 1975, was appointed principal. During 1979-80, Mr. Wigg was on study leave from the school From August to Demember, Mr. Mai I Clewes served as Acting Principal before leaving to become Principal of Wilson Junior High School. From January to August of 1980 Mr. Mich Forsler became acting Principal of Churchill. In September of 1981 he was appointed principal and remained at WCHS until his appointment to the LCI as principal in 1987. Mr. Paul Gowans, became Principal of WCHS in April 1987, moving from his previous principalship at Wilson Junior High School. Paul was the force behind bringing the International Baccalaureate program to Churchill. The 1989-90 school year saw the first grade 10 IB class start at WCHS. He remained principal until January of 1990 when he moved to Red Deer. At this time Mr. Gary Bartlett was appointed acting principal for the rest of the year. In September of 1990 Gary Bartlett was appointed as Principal. During his time as principal a four stage upgrade to the building began. Gary began the plans for the first stage of this upgrade which would upgrade the office area and add a new staff room and entrance to the building, Construction began just as Gary was leaving to become Principal of Mike Mountain Horse School. Carol Steen became Principal of WCHS in August of 1993. It was a hectic start for Carol, the building was well into the first stages of construction and the main office was non-existant. Temporary offices were set up all over the school and staff and students had to tolerate the noise and dust until after Christmas. The result was a much improved and expanded office and a new staff room as well as a new facility for the counselling offices and Special Education Program. Shortly after this first stage of renovations were complete in 1994, Ralph Klein announced major cut backs to Funding for Education and the renovations stopped. Carol was Principal of WCHS until the end of June 2000 at which time she became Principal of LCI During Carol's term as Principal, Churchill finally saw more renovations in 1999 when the Sc ence labs were modernized. September 2000 will see another new Principal, Tim Roliingson will move from 10 years as Assistant . Principal to become the new Principal of WCHS.
