moving in This year has been one of positive
change. Our population of almost 1000
students from grades 9-12 has our school
buzzing. The clubs, dances, games, concerts,
drama, projects, tests, crowded hallways and
service projects are continuous.
Old and new teachers struggle and succeed
as they adjust to new rooms and new courses.
All in all our first year as a grade 9-12 school
has been a huge success. Our grade 11 and
12 students have been real leaders in
welcoming the grade 9 and 10 students and
have helped them to adjust to high school.
Teachers are responding to being stretched
even further by coaching more teams,
supervising more at lunches and after school.
I am proud of their efforts. On a scale of 1 -10
from my point of view I would score
reconfiguration and all the other changes as
an 8.5 out of 10. -

grown to accommodate another grade level.
With the cooperation of the staff and
students the transition has been smooth.
The new hallways and classrooms are filled
with a remarkable energy and I hope that this
spirit will continue and improve.

that of Churchill Pride.

meeting newpeople.This September, Winston
Churchill saw the completion of many
changes. The existing staff and students sat
back and watched how 53% of the population
became new grade 9’s and 10’s. That was
just the beginning, besides the new students,
Churchill also gained 22 new staff members
16 being new teachers, 1 new caretaker, 1
new secretary and 5 new support staff.
This year brought more then just new faces, it
brought with it new sites and sounds. The
hallways look different with more lockers,
they are crowded with many students, who
mostly are little! It takes much longer to get to
classes, and to get a lunch from the cafeteria.
There has been more damage, more
garbage and more students hanging around
after school, but that’s something youjmust
expect.
It’s great to see the grade 9’s adjusting and
fitting in. By the end of this year the whole
student body will have come together as one
big Churchill Family.

trying new things The Leadership workshop
has always been a great way to meet new
faces and get a feel for the school environment.
This year students in grades 9 through
12 participated in two days of team building
activities and fun.
Fun Day, the first Friday of the year, is a
perfect opportunity for students from grades 9
through 12 to discover new changes around
the school and to meet new friends in a social
atmosphere. This has been a great WCHS
tradition and will be for many years to come.
Every year Fun Day becomes more exciting.
This year, for the first time ever, there were
BMX biking and skateboarding
demonstrations, with great talent and tricks.
As always there was a delicious BBQ run by
the students’ council and Karaoke for
entertainment and a laugh.

WCHS looks much different this
year. The social department, CTS
computer labs, art room and drama
room have moved into beautiful
new classrooms in the old gym.
Our students are benefitting from
the latest technology in these
areas.
We have a whole new grade to
teach and most teachers have had
to develop new grade 9 courses.
16 new teachers have brought
enthusiasm and a fresh attitude to
the different departments. All in all
it has been a great academic start
for a school that has had so many
changes.

and cowgirls.
The Haunted House, put on by this
years 03-04 grad committee was as
spooky and gross as ever and raised
over 5000 dollars!

came together for the first pep rally
in the new gym to support the
Volleyball, Football, Cross Country
and Golf teams. There was lots of
cheering and support for our teams,
fun activities and an awesome video
presentation.
Our second large gathering began
with the official opening of our .new
addition and concluded with a Grad
bachelor and bachelorette auction.
Several members of the senior
class volunteered to be slaves for a
day in return for a donation to the
Grad fund. Over $600 was raised to
help fund grad activities.

the hallway’s can be a little difficult
since the grade 9’s arrived. The school
is now bigger and it takes you longer to
get to your classes.
There are new stairwells that are »
crowded during class changes. There
are also new hallways, and lockers to
confuse things even more.
The behavior in the hallways can be
rowdy, and it is not uncommon to see a
grade 9 running. Careful, you might get
run over.

What is your fondest memory of Churchill?
During grade 11 in foods class, Tim would drop by with the announcements and
then proceed to compliment my cooking group. We were in the kitchen while he

& South Zones sweeping the South Zones male catagory with 4 gold medals.
We also had two Top 10 finishes at Provincials.

Our senior boys team had a good showing this year with the
followiing results: placed second in pre-season play; placed second in
the Eagle Butte tournament and in Medicine Hat; placed 3rd in the LCI
and LC tournaments. The team finished off the season by winning the

This year’s JV Bulldogs basketball team relied heavily on speed,
quickness, and intensity. They played an up tempo in your face like
game. With a strong showing at their home tournament (WCIT) they
demonstrated their resillient and deteremined character. They refused to
fold their tents and always competed until the final whistle. The greatest
example of their character was their double digit come from behind
victory agaisnt North Side rivals Immanuel Christian School.

This year marked an exciting new chapter in the history of Bulldog basketball. Led by
provincial gold medalist team member Ken Otieno, the 'Dawgs sent a message to the
South Zone that WC basketbail is back. At the height of their season the 'Dawgs were
able to capture their home tournament crown in front of great crowds who created an
electric atmosphere. The tournament highlights included an early morning game which
showcased a Ken Otieno dunk and a Friday night game where the 'Dawgs battle from
21 points down in the last 6 minutes to win the game by three. The Dawgs then
captured a silver medal in the South 3AZone Championship before winning the
Consolation Championship at the 3A Provincial Championships.

The major highlight for this season was definatly our Medicine Hat
tournament on February 8th and 9th. We fought hard and won a close game
to Okotoks by a score of 61-59. We had a good season with lots of good
times and laughs.

Last December, General Faculties Council approved an Open Access Policy for the U of L, culminating an 18-month, faculty-led initiative. As only one other Canadian university has adopted a similar policy, this article is the first of a monthly UWeekly series that will spotlight key aspects of the policy including its purpose, what’s involved for authors, and where to see the policy “in action.”
To begin, what is open access (OA)?
OA is an alternative to traditional approaches to disseminating scholarly works such as peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. OA literature typically has two key features: it is freely available online and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions (Suber, 2012).
What was the purpose of developing the U of L Open Access Policy?
The purpose was twofold:
to showcase U of L research in OPUS by providing permanent, copyright-compliant public access to scholarly articles by U of L authors, and
to promote and facilitate lawful dissemination and use of scholarly literature among scholars and interested individuals around the globe.
Why are alternative approaches to disseminating scholarly works needed today? In short, the current scholarly communication ecosystem is struggling to remain viable. For hundreds of years, researchers have published their work in scholarly journals without expectation of payment as they explored the world’s many puzzles, problems, and potential solutions. While scholarly articles are a common mode of disseminating research findings, the ability to read them is usually paywalled. At the same time, academic libraries struggle to provide access to the scholarly literature needed by their research communities in the face of perennial price hikes and an economic climate of funding reductions.
How does the U of L policy affect authors? First of all, it’s important to emphasize that while all U of L authors (faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows) are expected to participate, complying with the OA Policy is voluntary. That said, many benefits will accrue to authors who choose to participate, which we will cover in a later article in the series.

In this third article in the UWeekly series on the University’s Open Access Policy, we explore a question many U of L authors have asked: Do the publishers and journals I work with actually permit local archiving of my scholarly articles after they’re accepted for publication? To find out, the Library conducted a study in Summer 2018 to identify the publishers chosen by U of L authors and to assess the extent to which publishers’ copyright policies align with the goals of open access (OA) policies of the sort the U of L eventually adopted in December 2019.
What proportion of U of L articles are archivable in OPUS?
Of the 1,676 articles we analyzed, fully 97 per cent were eligible for public dissemination in OPUS, with or without embargoes. To identify journal publishers chosen by University researchers, we searched several Library subscription databases—Web of Science, JSTOR, and all Ebsco and ProQuest databases—for peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2018 written by U of L-affiliated authors.
We then assessed each article to see if it was published in an OA journal and if the publisher’s version of record (VOR) could be archived in OPUS. For articles in non-OA journals, we used SHERPA/RoMEO to see if publishers’ policies permitted the VOR or the authors’ accepted manuscript (AAM) to be made publicly available in OPUS, and if so, whether an embargo period was required.

Chart 1 below summarizes our eye-opening findings. Publishers’ policies permitted 69 per cent to be publicly archived as AAMs and 28 per cent as VORs. A mere three per cent were either in journals governed by publisher policies prohibiting OA dissemination of any kind or we were unable to ascertain whether the publishers allowed public archiving of AAMs or VORs in research repositories like OPUS.
How common are embargo periods? Of the 1,149 AAMs that were eligible for archiving in OPUS as OA articles, 84 per cent were subject to publisher-imposed delay periods (embargoes) during which public access was prohibited. The two most common embargo periods were 12 months (67 per cent) and 24 months (22 per cent). Chart 2 summarizes the various embargo durations found within our data set.

Note that from May 2015 forward, all U of L researchers who publish peer-reviewed articles arising from Tri-Agency-supported research must comply with the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy , which states the articles must be publicly available within 12 months of publication. If you follow the U of L OA Policy you will meet this requirement as long as your publisher does not impose an embargo period that is longer than 12 months.
How many OA-eligible articles are available in OPUS? As almost all articles turned out to be OA-eligible, we did further analyses to determine how many were archived in OPUS. These findings were sobering. Only nine of 1,149 eligible AAMs (0.8 per cent) and 126 of 477 eligible VORs (26.4 per cent)—overall, eight per cent of 1,676 articles—had been deposited in OPUS at the time of our study.
Now that we have an institutional OA policy in place, all U of L researchers have a golden opportunity to begin submitting their AAMs to OPUS ([email protected]) systematically. Such a collective effort among our researchers would significantly reduce lost OA opportunities from continuing, which would be to the advantage of all current and future scholars and scholarship worldwide.

In this month’s article in the Open Access (OA) Policy series, we explore a primary purpose of the policy — providing public access to articles that would otherwise be paywalled. A common misperception is that OA is only for researchers who have funds to cover OA-article processing charges. In fact, paid OA is merely one form. In another form promoted by the OA Policy, authors submit their accepted manuscripts for archiving in OPUS. And in a third form, sometimes publishers grant permission to archive their versions of record in OPUS.
Why did you submit your articles published in subscription journals to OPUS?
RB: I want my research (e.g., https://opus.uleth.ca/handle/10133/3702) to be as transparent and accessible as possible so others can read, cite or quote the material where useful.
BL: To make my publications (e.g., https://opus.uleth.ca/handle/10133/3471) accessible to readers interested in my work. It gives a chronology of my publications and makes my opus of publications readily accessible, even for those without institutional subscriptions. The link to all my publications in one place has been very useful to share in my conference presentations.
KP: I wanted to make the article (https://opus.uleth.ca/handle/10133/5378) accessible to a wider audience. I also like the idea that OPUS is an institutional repository that will be maintained indefinitely; this creates another permanent record of the article. It is also a contribution to the U of Lethbridge's research record.
DM: To help me with the tracking of my work (e.g., https://opus.uleth.ca/handle/10133/5662) and to help me prepare my PAR [professional activities report], as well as share my work.
To what extent did your understanding of “open access” change during the University’s process of considering and then adopting an OA Policy?
RB: I have learned a lot about open access while serving on the library committee set up to explore the various options and issues. We received valuable feedback from faculty as well.
BL: I subscribe to the value of making knowledge widely accessible and available. I also believe in knowledge translation, so the time and expertise scholars spend on intellectual and research projects can be put into real life applications that improve lives and services. tenure and promotion culture, careers of researchers and scholars, issues of credibility and merit by journal reputation and impact factor, the aims and goals of the publication industry, and the use of research funds. The larger backdrop is that we live in a capitalistic world where ownership of intellectual property and knowledge has increasingly taken a central place. Hence discussion of OA involving multiple perspectives from the academic community has been valuable and illuminating.
KP: I am a bit better aware now of what can and cannot be posted in terms of copyright requirements.
DM: Attending the library presentations on open access had a huge impact on learning the value behind open access, both as a professor and as a member of society. I had no idea what open access was until I attended a noon hour presentation on it.
What barriers do you see, if any, in systematically sending to OPUS your articles accepted for publication, and are there supports that could make this process easier for faculty?
RB: A reminder to faculty to submit accepted publications to OPUS, perhaps, when deans send out the annual PAR requests.
BL: Each journal has its own policies for posting on institutional repositories. I would appreciate the help of the library in interpreting these terms and advising me on the time stipulations and the versions acceptable for posting.
KP: I wonder if it might make it easier for U of L authors to use OPUS if there were a clearly marked link on the Library homepage, saying something like, "Post your work to OPUS", together with a very clear how-to guide. There is a description of the Open Access Policy, which is helpful, but something more like a how-to or FAQ could encourage more submissions. There should also be a prominent link to OPUS itself on the Library homepage.
DM: I think the process is smooth, efficient, and the library team makes it supportive. I do not have any suggestions.
